    Best video about light fitting on TH-cam and I've gone through loads in the past few days. That's what you call a step-by-step guide. Anyone can follow it and be successful. I'm a bloke but glad to see that it's a video done by a woman that's the best. Keep up the good work, sister.

    Lots of comments here asking about switch live cables and how to wire the 'extra' neutral wire. Hope this comment helps. This is a great video for IRISH wired light fittings. There should be an earth/live/neutral and a separate 'shared' neutral which is run along all the other fittings in the house.
    I just installed my first light fitting after watching this video, and it works great.
    Just remember - turn off the power to the ENTIRE house, if you just switch the MCB for 'upstairs lights' or whatever it says on the CU, that doesn't mean there's not a live connection coming from somewhere else in the house, play safe, switch off the MAIN power.
    The 2 neutrals go into the ONE block, just like the video. Appreciate that's not always the way for foreign wired houses, but IRISH houses are 99.999% wired this way. You will be fine (y)

    This video really helped me as a complete novice. Fortunately, the wiring is very similar to what's in my house so that was a good start! Only thing I would add is get a decent terminal connector block as the one that came with our light fitting was rubbish and fiddly (small screws which didn't tighten) and we ended up buying a new one.

    strange set up. at 3.02 it shows one cable on left which appear to have a live and earth coming from it and the other two cables each look only large enough to contain the individual blue neutrals and no lives or unsleeved earth wires. Now, Ireland may be completely different to the UK, but surely this should be stated. As things stand the rose at beginning contained no lives in the loop (central group) and had the brown live into L and henceforth taking the place of what in UK would have been a blue neutral wire with brown sleeving to indicate it being not actually being a neutral but instead a switched live (line).
    So the rose has pretty much what you'd get with a single Twin and earth cable plus another neutral. It has both neutrals shown on this video going into the neutrals group of connectors, the earth connector is being used. What is supposed to be powering this rose (no apparent supply) and I'm assuming the home isn't a single room dwelling so should normally feed off to another light in next room. This is hardly as stated the best video on this and could be completely misleading. It is possible there is some form of junction box in ceiling void or even a loop setup at the light switch but with nothing to indicate this there could be devastating consequences for the unwary based on this video.

  • @_tmmy_
    @_tmmy_ 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Firstly, you should not put electrical tape over the switch, as anyone can come along, remove the tape and turn on the power. Get a lock off device (a clamp that goes on the mcb and then you can fit your lock) but make sure you have key with you at all times. Secondly, why turn off the main switch? You will probably need some source of light whilst you're working (fed via the sockets).

    • @Gemzstone1
      @Gemzstone1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If you don't turn the power off at the mains you will be working with live wires which will result in being electrocuted! The tape is just to remind anyone else in the house not to switch the power back on. I've had that happen when I was changing a plug socket, won't touch anything now unless everyone is out of the house completely.

    • @calummcauley8719
      @calummcauley8719 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kas Georgiou You only need to switch off the circuit you’re working on, not the entire house, that is likely the reason someone in your household decided to switch it back on.

      @@Gemzstone1 you can turn individual circuits off, ie hall lights, lounge lights, upstairs lights, plug sockets, cooker, boiler etc etc.. No need to turn off entire CU. Just the circuit you are working on…

      Get a powerful battery operated workshop lamp to light the working area. They are pretty cheap and very useful if you have a power cut. Better safe than dead.
