Can remember watching this live on Eurosport , Argentin thought he,d won (?) Kelly`s effort was stunning . .even the crowd at finish line became `hushed` Kelly said he was `buggered` as he latched on to Argentin. .BUT a few moments gave Kelly the `Recovery` he needed to out sprint Argentin!! One of Kelly`s greatest wins . . .Proper Hard Man of cycling. . .
@@CesarClouds Think if memory serves me right Kelly had been injured weeks before this ? and a old pro cyclist used to say a enforced lay-off can be beneficial!! But six and a half hours!! was Lucky enough to meet the man at the `Wincanton` up in Newcastle.. won by Frans Maassen!
Boyer tried to get away from Fondriest and Museeuw, then Argentin blew their asses up proper and kept attacking..Then the legend, Raul Alcala came up and applied more pressure... Moreno Argentin held fast and the only one's that could follow him, sort of were Fondriest, Sorenson and Kelly... Then with only a 15" gap, Kelly jumped out in front of the chase group.. chased Argentin down and at the last km, it was mano y mano for a sprint, and Kelly dominated Argentin; who was clearly too spent from being on a solo breakaway for the last 10 km's or so...
Kelly was a much better finisher in one day races than at stage races. This is not to say he's not one for stage races finishes (x5 at the TDF, more than this at la Vuelta), but in a situation like here, he rarely lost.
@@mattygee5000 Have to get this. I have read "A rough ride" by Paul Kimmage. Excellent and honest read about life as a "pro" cyclist (drugs and more drugs)
No matter how many times I watch this over the years, the commentators, "Kelly is back with a bang and this lot down likewise with a bang" always gets a laugh out of me. Hilarious.
IIRC, the Motorola rider who crashed was Max Sciandri, who wasn't wearing a helmet, and hit his head on the asphalt, resulting in a pretty bad concussion that took him some time to heal from.
actually I think they modulated your speed a little better than the typical Campy SR calipers--less likely hood of a lockup. The Shimano rubber blocks could stop you on a dime.
I never got to watch this MSR edition live. What a catch! Argentin was so strong that early part of the year, and as he was nearing the last kilometre, he and the tifosi must've thought it was a done deal... until he realised it was none other than Kelly who was about to catch him LOL😅 Kelly just needed a short while to recover -- Argentin knew it inside. That must've really hurt. Looking forward to 2025, it'd really be cool to see some great attacks and performances put Pogacar to the sword. I actually like Poggy Bear, but someone's got to match him in some way. No idea how that will play out, so let's see what the coming season brings...

La vidi in diretta, Argentin attese Kelly per giocarsi la volata per paura di essere sorpreso nella parte pianeggiante, col senno di poi se avesse tirato fino al traguardo forse avrebbe vinto.
Kelly wasn't known for descending but pulled it out there , brilliantly timed. Excellent. Heard he got helmet from team car as a one off for the descent. Argentin must be still peed off today loosing a classic in such a way. When pro's rode classic bikes and they were men not big girls blouses using micro gears.
Quand on perd, c'est qu'on n'a pas gagné, c'est tout! Kelly était bien placé, a fait l'effort au bon moment, a tenu compte de ses adversaires... et a gagné, rien d'autre à dire!
Sean Kelly was a superb rider and I love listening to him to him on GCN proper legend 😊
Sean Kelly. An absolute legend of the sport. I still love listening to his analysis during Grand Tours on Eurosport.......
This a fantastic finish from the King, and Duffers' commentary is wonderful. I can't stop coming back to watch it.

Lovely to hear Dave Duffield , he was my favourite.
Here from the GCN video what a monster Kelly was
Same. Wanted to see that descent after Ollie told the story on Gcn
7 hours in the saddle that day... what legends...
King Kelly - the one day master. Brilliant. The master of tactic.
The Lad
The 2 best riders for One Day races of their generation. Clash of titans
Absolutely. They were the classic Kings of that era.
Beautiful Sean Kelly 🥰
God save the King (Kelly)!. One of the greatest riders ever.
Dave Duffifeld RIP, beautiful lovely man
Duffifeld was absolutely fabulous
incredible human being, mind over mattress!king KELLY

True, the worlds that time to Lemond though was a huge disappointment to him
Was set up for him
That's how to win a Classic....brilliant
Kelly is da man!!!!
The groan of the fans when they find out Kelly has caught Argentin

Kelly wearing a hard shell helmet, maybe a first. I think he knew a fast descent was needed. Great finish for Kelly.
A big bonus was on offer from the manufacturer if he won a race wearing that helmet. He only put it on later in the race.
@@mattygee5000 Very nice. Did not know that but makes sense. Thanks

Phil Anderson What did you think of Trentin's attack with a K to go yesterday? Guess it didnt matter since Julian rode such a smart race!
Vintage Kelly! 👍🇮🇪
fucking legends. sprinting uphill like it's nothing.
Kelly best rider back then
It is possible for a better quality from that race? thanks.
Great race. Love it. Thank you
Kelly like an hawk....fantastico
well done on that finish Sean your some man for one man
And people complain about motos these days...
Kelly in descent has got revenge of all the moto in the front offering their slipstream to Argentin..
Going down the Poggio with Campagnolo Delta brakes must have sucked😂

Thought I was watching a motorbike race.
The fitness of these guys is off the scale, over seven hours racing, fuck , how do they do it....

Kelly!
Not dismissing safety factors, but cycling was so much more photogenic before big goggles helmets and carbon everything.
Why are they riding the wrong way back after finishing? So dangerous if others were to finish
Premiato il coraggio in discesa di Kelly, niente da aggiungere...
It was much more exciting back in the day...
Dino Drokan as well the fucking helmet rule makes riders unpersonal
Kwiatkosky\Sagan Sanremo was exciting Too

Great film, if the commentator had said nothing - what a pain compared to Phil Liggett.
I ALWAYS remember Kelly ALWAYS sitting on the wheel of some other rider....., NEVER taking a lead................................
He lead the attack to bridge the gap and dominated Argentine. Think you're mistaken there pal.
Every drop of energy counts, Kelly was no fool and he could think very quickly.

A case of selective memory there dude. Kelly's brave descending was rewarded with his 9th Monument.
