  • The Poggio is one of the most iconic climbs in cycling. It’s not the longest or the steepest, but it‘s certainly one with a lot of history, including the exploits of Sean Kelly on his way to two Milan-San Remo victories. With Sean riding a modern Vitus Zenium and Ollie on a 1986 Vitus 979, we challenged him to the ultimate vintage vs modern race on this epic climb!

I used to ride on very skinny tubs in the 80s on my lovely Woodrup Reynolds 531c steel road bike. I once descended fast and misjudged a bend. Off I came and have never quite had the confidence to descend as fast again. That bike is long gone and I now ride a Giant Defy carbon. At 61, I would be lost on a bike of that vintage now. Sean is a proper legend who I loved to watch back in the day and he's still terrifically fit.

First ~ no offence toward Ollie, as he is a great presenter ~ but, I was rooting for Sean. I, too am 65, and still attempt to ride as hard as I did as when I was in my 30s. Besides, Kelly and LeMond were my inspiration to begin riding when I did, and they continue to inspire me to this day. Fact Check: TIG welding was around for decades before that bike was built, and being used on bike frames in steel, aluminium and titanium. Bonding was used because it was quick to manufacture, allowed an adaptable frame design and didn't require post-weld heat treatment. Vitus could also use different alloys for the cast lugs and the anodised Dural tubes, even though they were not compatible for welding.
BTW Nice crack in the stem there at 5:32.

Beautiful vid and thanks to the bloke that let Ollie pound it up and down the Poggio. Serious attention to detail and confidence in the frame's condition and build quality. My friend's brother had a 979 when I was in high school back in 89. I envied that machine so much. Couple points…TIG welding DID exist in 1986 (Cannondale was already building race frames) but the world of pro racing wasn’t ready to go for the “fat” look yet; and those Mavic/Modolo brakes were actually quite good (there have been A LOT more descents of the Poggio done with rim brakes than with the newfangled discs!)…like Sean says, “You ride a bike like that all the time, you get used to it”. But, it wasn’t really “getting used to it” because that’s what there was!…there wasn’t anything “better” to compare it to!

Spot on! Those 1st Gen 'Dales with those funny looking rear dropouts (yuck!). They didn't feel comfortable either.
Wonder if some riders used in their Campy brake shoes those red rubber Scott Mathausaur pads? I still use them on my Super record brakes because they just don't dry out and grip my MAVIC rims really nice with ZERO squeals!

    • @johns3106

@@ralphc1405 Actually it was 2nd generation Cannondales that had those weird “cantelivered “ dropouts…just looking at them made me think they would snap right off! First gen Cannondales (circa ‘85-‘88 approx.) had a much more “normal” looking stay/dropout configuration.

A great video, well done Sean Kelly. back in 50s n 60s we called them Brake blocks, useless in the wet. Toe clips we had a metal plate fixed to out cycling shoes so when the strap on the toe clip was pulled tight the foot couldn't slide out of the peddles, the leather strap had a quick release buckle that you had to release before getting your foot out. Good old days "not"...

Both wins were amazing. He was known for unleashing something extra when approaching the finish looking spent. Lemond said he was constantly worried about Kelly passing him in the 1989 World's Road Race final sprint. Lemond also had that kind of finish but didn't manage to unleash it quite as often as Kelly did. Especially after he got shot.

Amazing that Kelly pulled off this win in 1992 at the age of 35 -- back in the days where athletes had shorter careers due to different medicine, training, diet, etc. I think the equivalent today would be a 40 year old (or thereabouts) winning -- which is probably never going to happen. He will always be one of the greatest in an era of greats.
