    We were looking for a cheap, practical and extremely reliable car earlier this year. After watching Matt's videos on cheap, reliable cars we went for a 2011 Civic, 1.8 petrol, manual.
    Absolute beast of a car. Ridiculously practical. The rear seats fold completely flat or go vertical which is insanely useful. It's basically a hatchback with the load capacity of an SUV. I'm 6'6" and fit in it comfortably. 40mpg and runs absolutely perfectly.
    Also, it looks nice but attracts no attention so we're happy leaving it wherever.
    I'd 100% recommend one if anyone wants a well priced (£3500-4000) car. Also, cheers to Matt for the recommendation!

      I've had six Hondas - three of them were Civics. A 4 door US built sedan, a 2 door coupe and the Sport model, which was the best. They gave me a total of 13 years trouble free, happy motoring.

      £25-£35 grand cars are still a ridiculous price in my book. I honestly think a good Mercedes or BMW in the £2,000 to £5,000 ball park can be very reliable and low cost to run on a daily basis for UK or cross-EU runs.

  • @Czechbound
    @Czechbound 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +46

    I guess a point to remember is that although heavily depreciated luxury cars have serving costs that shouldn't be hugely higher than lesser marques, if things break, replacement parts prices can still be reflective of the original price of the car eg best to follow Matt's advice from his videos to buy something like this where you can have, at the outset, a decent reserve fund for the inevitable expensive parts replacement/ labour. For me, the BMW 7-series would be the one I'd have. They'll never look dated to my eyes. Amateur Question : Best to buy something like these cars from a dealer so that you have some form of useful guarantee that it will work beyond the first week ? Note : I know nothing

    • @davidpaterson2309
      @davidpaterson2309 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

      Buying an old MB, BMW or whatever can certainly be a risk but not inevitably and you can mitigate it by buying carefully. I have run lots of old MBs of all kinds for years and it has been no more expensive than anything else - IF you buy the right cars and IF you know a good independent specialist to maintain it. And both of those things aren’t hard to find if you look carefully. Eg I bought an 11 year old CLK 500 which we ran as a second car for 3 years. Sounds scary? Of course it was thirsty (a 5 litre V8?) but not outrageously so (upper 20s) unless you had a heavy right foot. But it had done under 40k miles and had a full history, with every invoice. And that big scary engine and gearbox were very nearly bulletproof - yes, it would have been expensive if anything went wrong, but it wasn’t likely to. And my local MB specialist charged £350 for an A and £450 for a B - never, ever, go near an MB main dealer who will charge more than double that. And if you’re a car lover, you really should have a V8 once in your life - and make it a Merc, it’s a fabulous engine and a joy to drive.

      Someone I used to work with (who raced go karts and knew his stuff) bought a smart looking BMW 530d and it was not a good experience. And this was from a main dealer. He reckons it was a well thrashed but very well detailed fleet hack. Guarantees are certainly worth considering but check what they cover. My brother bought a Toyota Yaris and the clutch failed in the first week. The dealer fixed it under the 3 month warranty. Good luck!

      It's not that. It's the Tesla price cuts and the market getting a load of model 3s that have just ended lease. It's a good option that's driven the prices down of the other options that had been artificially high for a long time

    • @ouethojlkjn
      @ouethojlkjn 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      As mentioned, EV prices were chopped when Tesla introduced lower pricing start of this year - and as well as Tesla, a large number of Zoes are rolling off their lease and there are some brilliant bargains to be had. Tesla Superchargers are usually much better service than the rest of the public points but even then I have come across queueing - esp at busy time like lunch. I think ICE car prices will be walloped by the (I think unfair) ULEZ scheme expansions. But helped a little by much lower fuel prices. I even saw PRICE PARITY! for Diesel and Petrol the other day - never seen that in decades.

"Yes mate, proper fuct it is, the warning lights are on and everything, we can get a reconditioned exchange unit in for £1,900 plus vat, but then there is fitting which will require disassembly of the dashboard and lower suspension".

Actual proper buttons, ivory leather interior, Thermal Imaging camera (kid you not) and its a terrific and compelling 4 wheel drive 5 door hatchback. The problem is - where to next? I probably have to double what I paid to make a discernible upgrade. Fortunately I have a little NA MX5 for the weekend, and an old diesel Disco for the fishing and bush. New Zealand says hello!

Seriously quick and sounds like a jet plane when I put my foot down. Plus, I'm driving about in an Aston. It was either this or something like a merc a35 brand new. The merc would be more expensive 😂 I'll drive the Aston for 12 months, sell for the purchase price, or very close to, and buy another monster. This is how I like to have cars. Had a porche 911 before this and a e46 m3 before that. Didn't lose a penny on either. Lovely!

    Enjoy these vids 👍 Depreciation doesn't get considered enough when people buy used cars I think. Reckon you could do a video looking at used cars options that you think would likely hold their value well? Some cars can seem pricey but if they hold their value then they should be considered more of an investment than a cost (provided they're well maintained)

      yes, but for most part, most of these and most all cars that are not collectible, ie dn't have under around 30Kmiles on clock, are going to continue to depreciate over time. It's not complicated, except for the rare model which is very different in some way from all others. Almost never happens, i can think of only less than 5 EVER!

    8 years and an extra 10k later, I've been offered £8k for it.

The insurance is somehow cheaper than my first car, seat Ibiza 1.4, and I absolutely love it. It has everything I need. It’s comfortable, reliable, decently quick, and has all the gadgets. I bought a face-lift 2013 3.0ltr supercharged XJ portfolio with only 16,000 miles on it for £19,000. It had been serviced every 2000 miles and was garaged all it's life. It's like a new car. When it was purchased in very late 2012 it was £67,500 and the last list on them, with a few modifications (infotainment and headlights) was around £75,000. That's what I call bang for buck.
