As a hard core rocker . I have only to say this : Bach opened so many doors for me , its ridicicolus . I feel like a new born baby every time I listen to Maestro Bach. And this interpretation just blows my mind... The doors are wide open to harvest the energy , and the lovely presence. I feel naked , in awe and in gratidude to the Baroque masters. Indeed, much credit is owed to Bach from the modern era. My taste and appreciation has progressed back to his work. Huge credit all those who deliver, inspire and enable the ongoing revelation of this great gift to humanity.
Numerous rock & pop groups have used Bach's music over the years, especially Jethro Tull and early Genesis and composer Burt Bacharach! Since he's been dead so long it's just public domain and there's no royalties to pay, although Bach's family tried to claim that about 10 years! Bach truly was the original rocker!
Brahms wasn't kidding when he said "Study Bach! There you'll find (literally) everything!" His words remain true to this day. There is so much rock in Bach it's ridiculous. Everything we call modern rock/pop music has already been done 270 years ago.
The Bach Magnificat was the first choral piece I performed as a college freshman, and it was the first Bach choral work I ever performed (I was concurrently working on his prelude and fugue in B-flat minor from the WTC I). Anyway, the night of the concert, my 18-year-old self got to the concert hall only to realize I had left my Magnificat score in the school cafeteria, which was locked. I told the director my dilemma, to which he said, "Oh no!" and walked away. Somehow I sang that entire work from memory that night, 19 years later, I still have many of those melismas memorized. So glad to have found this ensemble. Happy Advent '22, cheers from Memphis, TN!
i very seldom leave comments, but I just can't help admitting that to the (rather dull) question "What would you bring to a deserted Island?", my ultimate answer would be "All the recordings of the Netherlands Bach Society", plus my mp3 player and a solar charger. You folks ROCK! - and this is from someone who used to be a fan of heavy metal in his youth... Musical taste changes over time, I guess. Beside my absolute admiration on the divine performances, i must say: whoever is your sound engineer, must worth his salt. The quality of your recordings is topnotch - that is fairly obvious even coming through my crappy headphones. Who is this guy??? (or lady - argh, these days I must quickly add.). Anyways, I am pretty sure Master Bach would be at awe himself listening to his music, and would probably say "Das ist ein wunderbares Musikstück. Habe ich das wirklich geschrieben?...." Blessings from Budapest!!
Thank you for your kind words! We work with our regular music recording producer Guido Tichelman, accompagnied by Bastiaan Kuijt. However, this specific video was recorded by Leo de Klerk. By the way, you can always check the full list of credits for every recording on our website, under credits: www.bachvereniging.nl/en/bwv/bwv-243/
I still love Heavy Metal. I love Bach because as you can see/ hear , Bach is doing some precious metal here. I never thought about stopping my love to Bach because of other music styles, and vice versa.
Are you aware of the British radio programme, 'Desert Island Discs'? Each week a well-known guest picks 8 pieces of music to take with them to a desert island. They are also allowed one book, in addition to the Bible and Shakespeare as well as a luxury. The programme has been running for many decades
Beautiful solo voices. I grew up with music. My mother was giving concerts when she was pregnant with me. I have a photo of me at age two at her piano with her Haydn Creation oratorio Book. She was memorizing one of the soprano parts. She also played the vinyl which I heard as my first music memory. I used to listen to Gregorian Chant the night before exams in College. The soloists in this recording video are blessed with beautiful clear voices - no wild vibratos that average out just below the correct pitch that I have heard elsewhere . Thank you!!! I am 71 years old now and have heard a lot! Sang in Mendelssohn’s Elijah as a twenty something in a church choir next to my mother! Another blessing!
My two daughters and I met in Mannheim a few years back. Then my one daughter continued on to Leipzig and toured Mendelssohn House and St. Thomaskirche where he and J.S. Bach were organists and choir masters. I stood two feet in front of the choir pews near the altar! I was so moved. When I was in high school I performed the first movement of the Brandenburg Concerto number 5 on piano with our ensemble! Often when I am stressed, beautiful hymns come to me with just the right words to help! I was in the college choir and we performed Magnificat in Latin! God has truly blessed me with His music.
I love the moment in the Gloria Patri when the original Magnificat theme reappears. It is so joyful and sparklingly happy. I cannot stop smiling there.
Such beauty as we struggle with personal connections to those we love. Bach reminds us of Christ's love that infuses us with hope and joy in such difficult times.
@@papagenoharto Ignore. Just only 1.5% of those, who are not tuned, and cannot resonate with beautiful sounds. ...Or maybe classic music haters, who occurred here by mistake.
I had the honor of performing this piece with the Bachkoor Nijmegen in the Netherlands. Although perhaps obviously not at this level, we still managed to extract tears in the audience. Quite a lot of work to study, especially the faster pieces - but very satisfying to make it your own! A brilliant performance by van Veldhoven and his excellent musicians!
I sang this masterpiece 20+ years ago both as soprano and tenor (several years later) in a chorus. I remember working a whole year on it as soprano and half year as tenor. I still remember every part of it.

I think Bach had never ever heard his own opus to be sound like this. The rigorous genius would drop tears listening this deeply respectful, perfectly expressive performance with superbly rich and crystal clear sound. I have never heard anything to be that perfect like this performances of the Netherlands Bach Society. We are blessed to live in these days and experience this deepest level of understanding, talent, skill and service of the music of the greatest and one Johann Sebastian Bach of all time. This music is Heaven, magnificent, just as the title of the opus, truly is.
That's an interesting idea I never thought about! I imagine in his days Bach just had the choir boys from the churches of Leipzig, unwilling teenagers, and as musicians whatever was available for the budget being. If there was no able soprano avaible, well, he had to cope with that on upcoming sunday. What a struggle!
Have always loved JS Bach...his baroque musical are what makes "my world go round"...I was born singing harmony and discovered Bach about the age of 6 or so...
Trotzdem: Herzlichen Dank!! ;)
Greetings from Greece! I just wanted to add myself, that this group of marvellous musicians, Netherlands Bach Society and their channel, are really the greatest gift to all of us that can feel the whole spectrum of feelings this divine music from Bach can cause to a human beeing. Especially these dark times, your work is our soul and mind therapy, BLESS YOU ALL!
This is pure heavenly music. I have old records of these. I'm glad I kept my turntable. I listen very often. But this Netherlands ensemble is a gift. I love it. Love Bach's splendid compositions from over 200 years ago. Still magic.
Ohhhh... "Sicut locutus" is a masterpiece passage of world vocal music... With "Gloria" Bach makes us tremble and when the timpani and trumpets come, He reaches the Heaven... With final "Sicut erat in principio" Bach himself give us a masterclass of perfection...
Unparalleled artistry on every front. The Netherlands Bach Society is the very zenith of choral works accompanied by masters of period instruments. Divine.
I love the way Veldhoven is able to both choose lively tempi and keep everything clear. 2:26 : the poignant "Suscepit", with the "Tonus Peregrinus" as a cantus firmus, never fails to deliver.
Because of Bach and the selections you've made available this Sunday afternoon I feel the LIGHT and feel I want to contribute to ALL BACH and make him part of the days I have left here on earth. What a wondrous man.
Merveilleux! On touche à la perfection de tous côtés: le choeur, les solistes, la baguette...qui elle est parfois à peine rapide, et Bach au summum de lui-même. Merci.
Martin, you play the oboe SO beautifully. You have two huge fans here In Connecticut: A "Little Dutch Boy from the NL" and a "Cowgirl fom Boulder, Colorado". We are playing the Magnificat today and enjoyed this recording so much.
I’ve had the good fortune of singing this piece as a senior in high school! I have never been so challenged with a text as a first soprano - it is by all accounts my favorite piece of choral music and one that I am certain I will forever remember. I was part of a wonderful chorus of which I was the odd one out as it was made up completely of college students and older very experienced singers from the community, and I learned more from the weekly practices than I had in several years of schooling. This piece - and this recording, extremely beautiful and a very helpful practice - is gorgeous and I consider it required listening in general.
Yet another superb musical performance of the highest order, consistently beyond any of the 'competition', anywhere that I have heard in 50 years. Only Simon Preston and Trevor Pinnock are close. The performers and conductor are so natural and clearly thoroughly focussed, relaxed, enjoying the experience, no controls or silly histrionics. Fantastic!
Lidia, it is indeed wonderful! By the way, I kindly recommend the appreciation of the work of a living classical composer dedicated mostly to sacred music. I feel myself like a sort of non-official ambassador for his music - and, effectively, also one of his few supporters. He is very, very talented. You won't be disappointed. Greetings from France! th-cam.com/users/WFerdinand
Once again, profound gratitude to the Netherlands Bach Society - and not just for the performance of the work (beauty, joy, excitement) but for the nimbus of interviews with performers, with snatches of rehearsals, that together make this so very rewarding. What a text it is for musical setting too: no wonder that one can see on Wikipedia a list of almost 250 composers of Magnificat settings (and it does not claim to be complete).
I use a modern " high definition" TV as my computer monitor. And so I need to say that this is also visually perfect. All in black, brown and gold color tones, the wonderful symmetrical surrounding/backing head of the church which has the ideal size for these musical performances, and with the changing camera views on the singers and musicians you have a better view than when being there in reality. So, hartelijk dank uit Aken/Aachen! :-)
Marvelous! As a choir singer preparing to sing this masterpiece in a few weeks, I spent hours looking for previous representations, and this one is the best by far !
Wow! Bach really blows the socks of his audience with that opening. I wonder if Bach had a smile on his face when the audience jumped at the start of the first performance.
@@ericlopez6866 Bach performed it in Leipzig on Christmas Day in 1723, albeit interspersed with 4 additional movements. But all the music you hear here was performed in 1723.
Quelle merveille de constater que l’une des plus belles pièces en l’honneur de la Vierge Marie a été composée par un luthérien ! Et merci à la NBS de nous l’interpréter avec autant de foi, de joie et de talent !
That has to be the best version and nicely recorded, dare I say it better than the John Eliot Gardiner version which I just adore. Nicely played and well done to the sound engineers who never ever get a thank you.
How very true!! The sound engineers are folks destined to be only mentioned when they don't do their job well. If the result is absolutely brilliant, like in this one, we think it is just God given! Thank you for mentioning this. My deepest thanks to the sound engineers as well.
I am here to listen to Magnificat, thanks to the recommendation of the Colombian pianist and teacher Teresa Gómez. Vine aquí a escuchar Magnificat, gracias a la recomendación de la pianista y maestra Colombiana Teresa Gómez.
This is my first time hearing a Netherlands Bach Society performance and it is other worldly! The choir and soloists are spectacular and I especially loved the period instruments. Bravo! I am hooked on NBS now.
@@sarahwheeler1594 I watch/listen to Bach performed by many ensembles; but if I was forced to choose only one (a horrible thought) it would definitely be Netherlands Bach Society.
The Esurientes implevit bonis is one of the most beautiful pieces in all music, when I heard this aria I feel my heart so full, so peaceful, it's sublime, is God in the music
This is the piece that got me interested in Bach, with Karl Richter and the MBO. My choir teacher, rest his soul, played it for me as an example of 'genuine Baroque'. I proceeded over the next few days to play it over and over, to where he would leave the choir room to just get any peace, lol. I will always consider Bach the greatest.
This last Christmas season, I found a concert performance of Magnificat by St. Peter’s Outside the Wall choir. 2023 on my Texas Tv in my kitchen! Another blessing
Exquisite Et Misericordia! This entire performance is truly sublime. Thank you for such an incredible line-up of soloists! I enjoyed all of the separate interviews, also.
The richness of timbres and the variety of instrumental combinations are incredible ... If there really is a god, that can only be Bach ... In Bach we trust. Thank you, AoB, for this wonderful performance, so full of freshness, color and perfection... :)
Every time I hear the Suscepit Israel, I feel a healing energy around my head! Anybody else has this experience? Bach's music is divine! Can't get enough!
I heard a story on the BBC some years ago, then entitled "St Matthew Passion Miracle" or something like that . It was about a man who was in a coma, and when his vital signs started to drop and it looked like he was dying his wife had an inspired moment and played him Bach's Matthew Passion in his earbuds - and he came out of the coma in 30 minutes! I believe much of his sacred music (at least) is spiritual and achieves what he dedicated it for, namely "The glory of God and the refreshment of the human soul".
@@MrJohnno76 Bach's music is immensely comforting. Following a massive head injury I sustained in a high speed collision with a semi, followed by eight days in a coma, I found it difficult to make sense of the world, of anything. For some reason, I felt an impulse to listen to Bach's music, which is strange; for I had preferred until then the Romantics to him, especially Beethoven and Mahler. I checked out from a library two cds: a recording of his most prominent organ works, and Glenn Gould's 1980 recording of the Goldberg Variations. I found the latter in particular uniquely soothing - something about the counterpoint and variations on one constant theme, became a constant need. I listened to it again and again, even several times a day. Some time later I got a hold of the Well Tempered Clavier. The effect was similar. It soothed me as nothing else could, at a time when deep depression made thoughts of suicide a constant struggle. In retrospect, it seems no exaggeration at all that, along with an incredibly faithful wife and forgiving children, Bach saved my life.
@@bwv7186 Its a moving story - I hope things are OK for you now without too much residual disability & scarring of body or mind. It's an understandable story to me too - I have always felt that the effect Bach has on my mind is - and I can find no better word - cleansing. I worked in the English Health Service, and in a difficult period for me 10yr ago I was growing resentful of the studied exploitation of the personal qualities of workers in the service by those running it. It had been obvious to those at the coalface for a decade before this that a workforce crisis was developing - a bulge of boomer doctors and 1970s Asian migrant doctors approached retirement and would reduce supply. At the same time ALL the demand factors were going the other way: a steadily older and therefore sicker population, more novel tests & treatments, a rising UK population, rising patient expectations. But the politicians couldn't/wouldn't see and plan for it. My 10hr working day became 14 or 16hr as perfectionist traits drove me to try to keep things running smothly. The least demanding admin tasks were done at the fag-end of the day and the last of these was the mostly mindless signing of hundreds of prescriptions in a weary haze. Enraged at the theft of my evenings and at myself for my inability to forget the values my parents had given me so I could walk away from it all, I looked for something to help me avoid blowing a circuit. And found, after trials of other pieces, Bach's Goldberg variations - Nikolayeva and Perahia performances. Like you I listened again and again, first of all setting aside the prescriptions to concentrate, and then when I knew them by heart, I worked with them in the background. It did not save my life, but DID save my equanimity. In this way, Bach allowed me to survive my last working years.
On en rêvait. Vous l'avez fait! Quand l'érudition et le talent se mettent au service de la ferveur et du génie de Bach. La répartition soli/ripieni fonctionne parfaitement. Merci pour ce cadeau.
I get chills when I hear this. I used to listen to this in my dorm at college. On vinyl discs. And sang soprano in our college choir. 1970 to 1971. Also Handel’s Messiah. Sang in church choir next to my mother Mendelssohn’s Elijah 1982. In English- took about three hours to perform. Visited St.Thomas Kirche in Germany where both Mendelssohn and JS Bach were organists and choir masters. I stood right in front of the choir pews and two feet away from the golden toned floor plaque dedicated to Bach! All these blessings! I still have my mother’s Creation score 69 years later!
Although I was taught the piano all through my childhood, my school did not even have a choir. At university I sang this piece and so much more in the UK and abroad.I have never stopped singing since although mostly at home as babies and full time career meant all that singing, all those many choirs have had to die away. Let Europe always be united - the UK, Germany, the Netherlands (and indeed the USA too) etc by our wonderful heritage of music and indeed our Christian heritage. Bach and Handel rule.
Wonderful, I'm moved. Thank you NBS for this beautiful Magnificat: I loved this Bach's work since I was a boy. Special mention for director van Veldhoven: his joy and inspiration are contagious!

I accompanied voice students on the piano for their exams and concerts and voice lessons at our college. They used opera solos and also oratorios. I was a piano major but was still learning what the voice students were studying! Wonderful experience.

I love all "rock", as long as it is "barock":
I still love Heavy Metal. I love Bach because as you can see/ hear , Bach is doing some precious metal here.
I never thought about stopping my love to Bach because of other music styles, and vice versa.

Marvellous !
At 19 years old I joined a professional symphony orchestra, as a violist. I sat down for the first rehearsal: the Magnificat. Talk about luck!
Lindas palabras!
AMEN!
Yes he also experienced many tragedies and kept writing, playing, and worshipping! Glad Bach did not sit back nor give up
and makes it possible to forgive.
The finest performance of this work I have ever heard, beyond perfection and an absolute joy!

I also sang as Soprano 1 for over 20 years. Life has challenged me and so singing is no longer possible for me. I think back to a good time.
what a privilege.
This is the very first version I hear that makes every contrapuntal line clear without loosing cohesion.

Well said Róbert!
@Róbert János Schroff
I had the same thoughts. Another point is, that the audiance is far more discipliant today. Bach would love this performance!
So well said !!!! Beautiful words and 100% agree to the fullest 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻

This is pure heavenly music. I have old records of these. I'm glad I kept my turntable. I listen very often. But this Netherlands ensemble is a gift. I love it. Love Bach's splendid compositions from over 200 years ago. Still magic.
I think the one that sticks out here for me is the Suscepit Israel in particular.
That one is a work of haunting beauty.
Ohhhh... "Sicut locutus" is a masterpiece passage of world vocal music... With "Gloria" Bach makes us tremble and when the timpani and trumpets come, He reaches the Heaven... With final "Sicut erat in principio" Bach himself give us a masterclass of perfection...
Is a master piece total!
Quelle merveille... Merci à la Netherlands Bach Society pour cet enregistrement sublime, et pour le partage
I hope you will have a lot of these days left !!!!
Also in Connecticut here!
Un Magnificat veramente magnifico! Davvero sublime! 💗
Fantastic!
My favorite part is the aria at 05:28. I can't get enough of listening to the mezzo-soprano's wonderful voice and interpretation. WOW!
I completely agree 😊

Just as the title states: MAGNIFICENT! Thank you, Netherlands Bach Society, for all your wonderful work!
This is the piece that got me interested in Bach, with Karl Richter and the MBO. My choir teacher, rest his soul, played it for me as an example of 'genuine Baroque'.
Same here, your'e not alone.
@@MrJohnno76
Bach's music is immensely comforting.
One of my favorites. So glad it was posted online
Glorious, indeed. Thanks to all of you. It's an added bonus to be able to hear all the parts, vocal and orchestral, so clearly.
This is one of the most beautiful Magnificats I know of and heard recently.

What a nice part of music. I just discovered it a few days ago, and I now listen to it every day. Bach lives for ever 🙂
Although I was taught the piano all through my childhood, my school did not even have a choir. At university I sang this piece and so much more in the UK and abroad.I have never stopped singing since although mostly at home as babies and full time career meant all that singing, all those many choirs have had to die away. You have all said for me what I feel about the music and the interpretation. The extra gift to me is reading all your comments, from all over the world, and hellping me know that we are all kindred spirits. Rachel Pratt
...and people such as you are a pleasure to be joined with in the world of music and indeed the world Rachel. Anything and anyone which or who brings beauty and unity to the world can only be a cause for celebration.
Blessings and peace
Terrific performance. Amazing vocal soloists. Thank you!
Bravo, Brava. I thank all of you ever so much.
12 Points from the German Jury from Hamburg ! (for younger people 12 points in the "Grand Prix Eurovision de la Chanson Européenne" was the maximum. The Netherlands Bach Society is simply magnificient. Best wishes from Hamburg/Germany and keep on the good work ! Et in saecula saeculorum !
I listen to all kinds of music, and love it all; but every time i come back to Netherland Bach Society, I am amazed at the precision but also joy that these talented musicians bring to Bach's extraordinarily crafted works.
I cried of emotion with the movement "Et Misericordia". By a kind of "godcidence", it happened around 3h45 of this morning. ❤
I think we were crying at the same time, my friend. lol.
@@TheBonerBoyzGotWood „Et Misericordia“: Auch ich schreie! Danke meine Freunde!
Bach is the legend of all time. Besides, it was an excellent choir with excellent soloists and orchestra, plus excellent director. Thanks for uploading.
When i was about 17 and in High School, my choral director played this for me, and I was 'hooked on Bach'. I mustv' played it over and over (reel to reel)over the next weeks for hour in his studio, to his irritation. Bach will always be the best, in my mind.
How dare he be irritated!
I saw this concert yesterday, where, and in my home town, Donostia - San Sebastian. The best Christmas present I could have ever had. Absolutely wonderful. Thank you so much!
Was watching something else, and when it ended, my wise computer algorithm brought this up, to my delight!
La música de Bach es una de mis preferidas y vuestra calidad de interpretación me deja sin palabras. Maravilla de maravillas
This is stunning. So well done. Am teaching kids about Mary's Magnificat and will have them listen to this recording.
