  • Out of all the Pokémon challenge runs out there, the Monotype Run often gets left behind for the more dramatic and exciting variants. Today I want to give monotype runs some needed love by figuring out the best monotype run in each main series game. Be sure to drop a like and subscribe, especially if you actually read the description! You're truly dedicated. I like that.

It's the same issue with the ground types in Sinnoh. Gliscor and Mamoswine are locked to the post game and Gible isn't available until late game
The available Ground types in Sinnoh are
      Torterra
      Wormadam Sandy Cloak
      Golem
      Steelix
      Gastrodon
      Wishcash
      Garchomp (technically)

I did a poison type run in Pokémon Red recently. And I wanted to share some advice.
    1. Get a Haunter/Gengar and teach it Thunderbolt. It will help with Lorelei's water types.
    2. Put Nidoking and Nidoqueen on your team. They are strong and can learn strenght and surf.
    3. Get a Tentacruel and teach it Blizzard/Ice Beam, to deal with any dragon types.
    4. Teach Venusaur both Leech seed and Toxic (trust me).
Poison is my favorite type and I'm currently doing a mono poison run in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond. It's going really well so far.

I really enjoyed your video! One minor nitpick, though, is that some of the Gen 4 Pokemon that you mentioned (specifically Gallade, Gliscor and Mamoswine) couldn't be obtained until the postgame in Diamond and Pearl (through pokeradar, dual slot mode and swarm, respectively), taking away some of your options. However, it likely shouldn't have too big an effect on the final conclusions you came to for the games.

And I will admit I have not entirely stuck to the rule of having one type before the gym as in some cases i have had to bring in a mon of the type to use off the start/until i get a second member. I did a Ground Monotype of Platinum and you actually can get a really good Ground type for Gardenia's Gym. Enter Wormadam Sandy Cloak. It gets Bug Bite for all those pesky Grass Types and Confusion for the Roserade. Also, if you do play a Gen 4 Monotype, my recommendation is to plan where you put your TMs. You don't want to make the mistake of putting your only Earthquake TM on a Pokemon that can learn the move.

My favourite types are Dark, Water, and Normal, nothing else comes close to those three, and that's pretty much been consistent since I started the series with Gen 3. • @iBenjamin1000

monotype is currently probably the most popular type of nuzlocke that people are doing on youtube. how many pokemon and where do you get them, especially if you need to get one critter through a couple of gyms. how to beat trainers that you're weak to. in some games you need to distribute tms or figure out which of them have their own stab moves. but you don't have to do it as a nuzlocke. I think monotypes can be fun to see what kind of pokemon are available and especially if they give you critters you'd never consider. it's a team building exercise. I tried a mono bug team in oras and there were lots of critters and lots of good moves to use.

I really enjoyed this video so please don't think my nitpicking is saying the opposite, it was great! Two small issues I noticed in this video though.
In Diamond and Pearl you can't get Ralts before beating the game since it requires the PokeRadar which you get after the Nat Dex. I still think Fighting is the strongest there regardless though so it's no big deal.
Also, In Black and White there's a small patch of sand where you can catch Sandlie before fighting Burgh. That'd make a pretty big difference in my opinion since Sandile is neutral to the bug moves he's using instead of weak to them. Also it learns Rock Tomb(found in the Desert Resort) so getting a few extra levels on it before Eliza would be a biiig bonus. Still probably not the best type, but I think you seriously short changed them with that bit of knowledge missing.

I'm surprised Grass wasn't the runner-up in Hoenn when you can get pokemon such as Sceptile, Cradily, Ludicolo, Shiftry, Breloom, etc, and if you're playing sapphire you gave a decent advantage. I think it would be great if you make an overview of each monotype of each game, where you goes into the choices available and some of it challenge. You can also split it into parts for each gen where each part introduce a couple type, sorted into simple, complex, or outright impossible (Water/Rock/Fire for gen 4 for example).

  • @SparksMcPasta
    @SparksMcPasta ปีที่แล้ว +12

Id argue that the Normal type would be the best for gen one. Like you would struggle at first, but after the first few gyms you could steam roll the rest of the game, especially if you could get you hands on Snorlax, Tauros, Chansey, or Persian (in blue version). The sheer power of some of these normal types completely out weighs the fact most of them don't have a secondary type.

    • @Citizen5101
      @Citizen5101 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Normal doesn't even struggle early. Rattata learns Hyper Fang super early and can take down Brock only a little slower than Charmander or Butterfree. After that your options start opening up and you can get a lot of experience before needing to battle Misty, after that the game really opens up. The problem with Normal is how many great options you have to choose from.

    • @Citizen5101
      @Citizen5101 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Also not having a second type is more of an advantage than a disadvantage, there are very few Fighting type attacks in the game and most can be dealt with using a Normal/Flying Pokemon. Also tons of Normal types have a wide movepool that you won't be missing out on type coverage.

I adore monotype runs! Honestly my favorite type of Pokémon challenge.
As for favorite type, definitely water. Probably followed up by grass.
I’m actually doing a ghost monotype in Scarlet right now. Added a few extra rules to keep it interesting though!

@@shepskydad most recent team member is palossand but my favorite part about the challenge is the terastallize mechanic and the rule I added around it.
I am permitted one non ghost type but they must have a ghost terra type. Also in order to use them they must be terastallized. Grants extra coverage and opens up some interesting strats.
I’ve also nearly collected enough gimmieghoul coins to get a gholdengo. I will admit most of the coin collection is off cam but I figure that’s fair. Nobody wants to see somebody running around looking for coins for half a day.
But yes I’m very much looking forward to ghost monke

I once tried a Dark monotipe in Saphire and it was hilarious. All the Pokémon you can use are physical attackers (in a game where Dark moves are special) and even worse, there are shared dual types: 2 monodark, 2 water-dark and 2 grass-dark

I have yet to do a monotype run in most games but for gen 1 specifically I had a blast with Normal. Sure, Brock is kinda bad but otherwise the fact special is a single stat in gen 1, on top of the insane type coverage certain normal type mons have, made the team unstoppable. Catching chansey, tauros and kangaskhan was awful though.

  • @Gio98art

I always did these types of challenges as playthroughs after beating the game with a normal run.
To make the games more challenging however. I started doing single type, single evolution pokemon. Zoroark. Mienshao. Lycanroc. Lurantis. That kinda deal. It is a great challenge imo

I've done a few monolockes (mono runs with permadeath and level caps, basically), I used poison for FireRed (can confirm this works really well, Weezing MVP!) and flying for HeartGold, and also did Normal and Bug lockes in Violet.

I LOVE the fire type generally, it's one of my favorites, and I LOVE playing mono fire, even before I knew about "challenge runs". Arcanine, Ninetales, Flareon, Rapidash, Typhlosion, quilava!!! I actually love the design of quilava even more than typhlosion. Charizard of course. Houndoom, Entei, Ho-oh, Emboar, Talonflame, Inceroar, Centiskorch, omg Alolan Marowak, Skeledirge, Victini, Chandelure, Volcarona, Salazzle. Chi-Yu. I have no idea how I would choose which 6, If I could access all of them.

I've done a poison type mono of diamond, it was incredibly good and I'm sad it wasn't mentioned here; Roserade, Crobat, Haunter/Gengar, Tentacruel, Drapion, Skuntank, Toxicroak, and Dustox too I guess. Very powerful mons with incredibly good stab coverage, as well as two only weak to ground moves.

Coincidentally I did a mono-normal run of Crystal around the time this video originally came out. It went pretty spectacularly, and as far as the "no advantages" part goes, gens 1-3 were more about brute forcing and coverage moves than actual good type matchups anyways.

If I had to guess, Fighting is the best in SV. Flamigo is or at least was used in speed runs. You get it in the first area pretty much. You get options such as Pawmot for electric immunity, Medicham/Gallade for psychics, Lucario should be enough for fairies. Oh and Quaquaval with Aqua Step, if you can get your hands on ability patch for Moxie.
There’s also Annihilape with strong setup and near unresisted stabs, Breloom, Great Tusk in scarlet, Hariyama/Heracross for status absorption. Even the worst fightings being Falinks, Toxicroak, Crabominable and Tauros (depending on if you feel like getting the other forms), there’s not really a single bad fighting option. The biggest hurdle will be Revavroom fairy and poison I would think, but you could probably have something bulk up and kill it.

I would love to do some monotype runs in the future, just haven't gotten around to it yet. Ground is my favorite type, but I've had ideas for monotype runs with plenty of different types (I actually have a list):
Ground - Platinum, BW, XY, ORAS
    Psychic - XY
    Ice - XY, SwSh
    Steel - DPPt, BDSP
    Electric - SV
    Water - Any of them

Bug can be a fun monotype, it generally has a wide spread of secondary typing and is generally considered weak so it will give you a challenge.
HGSS and DPPt are both great games to do a "bug catcher challenge" in because they have such a wide array of options. (Mainly boosted by the honey/headbutt trees)

Personally, the only monotype run I've ever done was a Bug run of Black 2 and it was an absolute blast. Gen 5 adds so many amazing Bug types to the game. My final team ended up being Scolipede, Leavany, Crustle, Escavalier, Volcarona and Galvantula and most of those Pokémon are still to this day some of my all-time favorites.

RBY Normal type is also excellent. You have to do some smart plays for Brock, but have 5 team members before Misty, two of which can be fully evolved. Depending on ruleset, the Safari Zone has some excellent upgrades for you, and at minimum you get the powerhouse of Snorlax. Plus STAB Hyper Beam in Gen 1 makes quick work of most teams, and the great coverage of many Normal types means that Rock or Fighting aren’t really threats to you.
