This build turned out great! 28:56 but, be careful having magnets anywhere near your watches! A Lot of modern watches have some amount of magnet resistance but if you have any older pieces they can get magnetised quite easily.
This was exactly my concern lol! As a person who owns multiple watches every single one of them mechanical, the magnets make me think about magnetism. It’s easy to eliminate that if you have a D magnetizer, however not everyone has one of those. Overall, this is a fantastic build and something I will never have. It’s still amazing to watch.
At @31:35 John pays Sam the compliment "...because he's the better cabinet builder than me". Sams work on this cannot be denied. The finished room is brilliantly executed and looks amazing.
Yeah I mean, it’s not like he did the rest of the room or the entire island and smart mirror for her or anything, leave it to a woman to criticise a man when he does something for himself
I'm not into carpentry, I may actually be one of the worst at it. But I really enjoy all your videos. I think a big reason for that is that you A. you explain everything like we're are dummys and B. that your videos most of the time show the entire progress from start to finish. There are no 10 episode series when it could all be one video, it's really appreciated.
I also enjoy that he talks to us during the process vs. the ones that do a voice over afterward. It has a more personal feel to it, like he's engaging with his audience.
@@juliansnow693not just automatic movements, mechanical watches in general can be ruined near magnets for to long. I think you can demagnetise the metal parts but it is complicated as it’ll have to be taken apart. Also not even a Rolex is safe near magnets since it also has metal parts. I think quarts movements should be fine though but I’m not sure.
Im into watch buildng as a hobby.....magnetizing your watch will cause it to run fast, slow, and other issues. Keep the magnets away from any mechanical watches, including the high end ones.
Am I the only one that started laughing when he said “we are going to blame the kids for this” as the camera is panning around his and Sara’s clothes? 😂😂👍🏻👍🏻 Well played, John… well played 👏🏻 always blame the kids!!
A fun build. Particularly liked the repurposing of a standing desk for the hidden compartment. That said, not a fan of having a non-locked gun storage option, particularly in a house with kids
28:17 ~ John, just a heads-up, if you have any manual/automatic movement watches, sticking a magnet in there to hold them in place is going to magnetize the watch. Basically ruin it's ability to function properly.... And at the end of the video, I'm seeing a real Rolex Submariner with a real Rolex box in the background. Oh John, what have you done. Try to get a cheap watch de-magnetizer off of eBay. If that doesn't fix the problem, that's going to be a costly visit to a Rolex service center.
With small humans, please ensure there's a lock on the pewpew. This is a beautiful piece of engineering, art, and craftsmanship, but a small safety feature (which you may have included, I don't want to assume) makes all the difference.
@stephaniegrehan9084 why would it be humid? It will either vent outside or if it's a heatpump or condenser drier then all the water goes down the drain.
Yesss! Im suppose to go fix a shower drain but my head is pounding this morning! No i didnt drink. But this is the perfect excuse to chill for another 40 minutes. Thanks bud!
I think your next build should be a tudor style 4 poster bed. In oak. In just one week. And then give it away to me on Black Friday 😃 I am one of those poor Europeans who really only has access to Ikea furniture, which I do like, but mainly because the only other option is antique furniture that I can't afford, just like I can't afford your furniture, and this makes me so sad the only way to bring joy back into my life, is for you to fulfil the aforementioned suggestion above 😃😁🤣 Very cool dressing room btw 🙌
Watches and magnets dont get along. If you wind up getting or have a nice mechanical watch, magnets will ruin it. Overall sick video. I keep my watches in a dresser top watch box. Drawer on the bottom of the box holds my knives, couple rings, flashight. Tiered cologne stand has a drawer that holds pom spray and watch tools. No kids so when my pistol isnt on me its on the night stand.
Absolutely love the mini this old house vibe John 👏 love to see more of these in the future. P.S. need to make something cool for Sam. For all the awesome stuff he does. 🥰
I love this channel, I am not into carpentry at all, however the content is episodic in format and it feels like myth busters meets pimp my…..wood? (LOL) and I can’t get enough of it.❤❤❤
John has to discover the addiction of power twist link belts. Once you have one you have to do everything in them. They look so cool. They run smooth too. Which is counterintuitive to how you'd think based on how they look. But they are kinda pricey compared to plain V belts. Not too bad though considering what you're getting.
Nice build! For the watches, I'd wrap the watch around a thick dowel, and then have semi-circle cradles on either side of each cubby to support the dowel, short enough that you can lift out the dowel. Love the channel!
Well done. The way that Sam built the drawers is the same way I've been doing them for years. It's not the most time efficient but you get the best results from it
Bob at ILikeToMakeStuff just made some hidden storage with standing desk hardware, but tied the buttons to a microcontroller and to Alexa to make it voice automated. That way you don't really even need button access.
I feel you guys should make a blooper collection. Now way John and the gang finished this built without s ton of bloopers. But awesome job guys go team work
Awesome, absolutely love it. Great idea with the sit / stand desk hardware. Only thing I would have done with the hidden cabinet is have the shelves on both sides.
Did I miss your insert for your “wood and epoxy how to class”? If it wasn’t sandwiched in-between “we don’t know what we’re doing” and “we’re all just winging it and hoping for the best” I don’t think I would notice it. 😂😂
Great work. I'd like to have seen the middle just a tad more flush as that's a large gap. A small change would have been to cut 45 degrees, like a French cleat. This would give no gap for things to fall down and hide the seam better. It might be an optical illusion, but it looks like the top cups towards the middle.
I have enough clothes for minimum 2 months of never wearing the same thing twice. I have over 100 hoodies, and 40 or so pairs of shoes. I'm a single white male that rarely leaves the house. I just like stuff.
if your culking furniture having a damp rag will help cleaning culk off when its fresh or if you drop culk of carpet or floor you either clean it up quick with a damp rag or leave it undisturbed until dry to pick it off
Doesn’t surprise me with those wire rack units. I’m not knocking the units themselves, but the way everyone installs them. They just put in the cheapest drywall anchors ever and don’t hit any studs. It’s like they actively avoid them. The crummy brackets have a nail, not a screw, a nail that has a slotted head like it might be a screw, but it’s a nail. Get bent installers! Also noticed that the nail holes hadn’t been touched up yet on the base trim. Definitely something I would do.
Hey john, Iam following you every time from Germany and having fun every me seeing your awesome work. I like what you've done for your wife. Take care ❤
Prefinish is excellent because it looks great and is super durable. However, a word of warning to viewers: get a good saw blade with a high tooth count. This stuff likes to tear out like crazy.
Missed an options for a bit more storages, but I will say that is a bomber closet. Huge! I would have stacked the washer and dryer and put in shelving with a false back so you could access the the plug an vent behind it. would have made for a odd sized and shaped shelf, but perfect for baskets for dirt laundry storage or maybe some other kind of storage.
I love how the project came out, but as a watch guy, the decision to have the watches on their side is something I wouldn’t have done after going through all the work to make dedicated cubby system like that
I would not have spent that time shaping beautiful walnut only to cover it up with leather. Could've covered a shaped pine 2x4. BUT I do understand working thru an evolving idea. Love the whole thing.
You should do a series where you reno your house with cool carpentry Easter eggs in every room. Win win for you, get a full renovation and content for your TH-cam channel.
I wouldn't actually do this because it's a lot of work, but I can think of a cool idea for holding the watches. If it was something like the first idea (leather covered pads on the left and right, cylinder in the middle), but there is some kind of simple linkage that pushes the central cylinder out into your hands when you push your fingers into the side pads. And conversely, when you push the cylinder back into the middle, the side pads come back out and hold the cylinder. It wouldn't be a particularly complex thing, it's basically just a see-saw that goes behind the pieces. But it's a lot of little bits to make, it would take forever.
In my time building custom closets for people, we never had anything this cool to build. Next build should be a panic room. Ya know, for poops and giggles.

The centre part of the hidden compartment, where you put the watches, is bigger. Knives are more collectable and useful than watches in the sense that all watches do the same thing, but various knives can have variations in blade shape, handle shape, deployment method, size, weight, etc that alters their function and suitability for various purposes. So you should have reserved more room for your knife collection to expand than for your watch collection to expand. For watches, all you need is a casual watch, a dress watch, and maybe an outdoor/sport/waterproof watch if your casual watch can't serve that role and you're good.

How about building a dining room table with a hidden Dungeons and Dragons board under the surface and a large flatscreen TV for the Dungeon Master to project the adventure area as the players progress. Just asking because I'd like to build one for my kids and I'm sure your design would be better than anything I could come up with. See Wyrmwood for examples.
