I think one of the best things about this scene that makes it even more realistic is the fact that the main character isn’t perfect. He isn’t calm and collected, waiting for the guys to come at him and then executing each move perfectly, ending all of them with a single move… He’s angry, and he also misses a lot of hits because of it. You can’t knock somebody out with one kick or punch to the body, so there’s a lot of pummeling involved. He may be well trained, but he’s still human.
I agree this scene is closer to real life when it comes to a free fight, but you in fact CAN knock out someone with a blow to the liver, solar plexum or - of course - a kick in the balls.
@Shubynu yeah I haven’t seen the fight but one of my friends in the older year fought 3 people older then him in school and absolutely destroyed them apparently he twisted one’s arm and one was punched in the face and fell to the ground. They’re taller then him and they are junkies, it’s crazy ngl

This movie did a really good job depicting the situation in South Korea in the 70s especially in high school. The country was recovering from a 3 year civil war that left both nations devastated due to different western ideologies. There was violence everywhere the nation was still unstable but quickly/forcefully recovering (bribery was huge even in school settings as depicted in this film and special privileges were given to children of politicians or military generals as also seen in this film). The country was also under a semi dictatorship and high schoolers had to learn how to use a gun and forced to undergo semi military training in case of another invasion from the north. As south Korea was backed by the UN and the US there was an influx of culture and cinema that was being flooded into the country (Hong Kong and American movies in particular). People especially younger people were frustrated, angry short fused as they weren't fully liberated but at the same time forced to follow the country's traditional Confucianism which kinda goes against the western ideologies and influences that the country was trying to fully embrace. But despite what socio economic background they were from they were able to unite under their love for Bruce Lee and his films which ironically depicts maybe encourages violence but at the same time was too bad ass to ignore. (And his films also focuses on being liberated from Japanese rule and western gangsters and standing up to the big guy). If you enjoyed this film you should check out "Friends" which is another Korean film with a similar setting in the 70s/80s about a bunch of highschool hooligans in Busan. 87% rotten tomatoes
This is a movie about what happened among 17-18-year-old students in South Korea in the 1970s. At that time, Korean society was not as safe as it is now. So adolescent students had to be strong on their own. Whether at school or in the neighborhood. This movie is not just about school violence. It reflects the oppression of military dictatorship that Korean society had to face in the 1970s and the times when it had to risk its life to protect its own conscience in an unfair and violent social atmosphere. After that, Korea has finally achieved its current democratization through numerous demonstrations and protests. You can find a veteran in the movie as a teacher at school. At that time, there was one teacher from veterans in all high schools. And, in the last scene, the letters attached to the school building were phrases that promoted military dictatorship. This actually happened under the military dictatorship at that time.
*Trust me. This scene is even way more powerful when you watch the whole movie. I remember the first time I watched it. It was so emotional that I got teared up and my legs and arms were shaking and twiching as if I wanted to beat up those bullies as well.*
Your lucky student from other class threw my note book and our teacher punish me i was so angry if they let us fight on one on one i will show no mercy to him
Grew up in a military town. Most the "bullies" at my school never tried taking it to far just picking on kids and name calling. The few that did ended up bruised and bloody. Any actual disputes where taken to behind the tennis courts (had that thick green mesh blocking windows and cameras) and 1 on 1 fights (normally) the very few gang members ( Latin kings, Sureños and whatever black gangs) didn't really bother anyone just sold weed and had ther own fights between themselves.
@@toybox2917 it was, until hurricane Katrina and we got a massive influx of people who didn't have our values. Fighting became so common and gangs started popping up everywhere. We also had our first murder and drive by shooting.
I watched this movie a couple weeks ago - incredible movie, very underrated imo. Also, the dude that hits him with the glass plays a small role in this, but is actually one of my all time favourite actors.
I remember this movie. A real good tribute movie to Bruce Lee and also social commentary like bullying in Korean schools and the silence culture of it. I watched the movie yesterday, it was such a classic and a great ride. It depicted clearly how real life is, you don't get happy endings, you make mistakes, get abused and treated unfairly by the system, fall in love and get struck by it. Same feeling about the MC taking hits and not being invincible.

@@JustinianG once upon a time in high school
What the name this cine?
This is a movie about what happened among 17-18-year-old students in South Korea in the 1970s.
At that time, Korean society was not as safe as it is now. So adolescent students had to be strong on their own. Whether at school or in the neighborhood.
This movie is not just about school violence. It reflects the oppression of military dictatorship that Korean society had to face in the 1970s and the times
when it had to risk its life to protect its own conscience in an unfair and violent social atmosphere.
This is an extremely accurate and well put analysis of the movie.

Yes
Grew up in a military town. Most the "bullies" at my school never tried taking it to far just picking on kids and name calling. The few that did ended up bruised and bloody. Any actual disputes where taken to behind the tennis courts (had that thick green mesh blocking windows and cameras) and 1 on 1 fights (normally) the very few gang members ( Latin kings, Sureños and whatever black gangs) didn't really bother anyone just sold weed and had ther own fights between themselves.
Wow!
