My very first job was attending a sleepy gas station on the night shift. I was dumped by my high-school sweetheart just before work and had been sitting there for hours with no one to talk to, stunned and trying not to cry, when I heard this song on the radio for the first time. You never forget your first pity party, man, that was a long night.

This is SO much deeper than the pain of one single guy who has been through difficult times....
This song is about the universal existential condition of humankind. Every experience of life rebounds back to our own solitary reaction to it. (The man in the mirror.)
Whatever we do, however we arrange our lives, we end-up back with ourselves. Alone again. And that is the NATURAL course of life. We are born. We live. We die. (Alone.)
No matter who loves you. No matter whomever you love. You will eventually find yourself alone. Again. (Naturally.) This is very deep emotional stuff.

The content and sadness in O'Sullivan's song has little if any bearing on him or his life up until he wrote the song, although his father did die when Raymond O'Sullivan was 11.
Later in his music career he would change his name to 'Gilbert'.
He was however, a great observer of life and saw the sadness in other people's experiences and lives, and so, he put his observations into poetry and this song.
    He is quoted as saying,
" I never cried when my father died. I never really knew him. I regret that, and he would have been proud of me."
His mother lived to over 80.
As the title appropriately says “Alone again, naturally.” Even with the help of others, we all move through our own journey alone, naturally.

Gilbert O'Sullivan in an interview, said this song was not about his life. It was just an idea that he came up with and wrote. "Alone Again (Naturally)" is an introspective ballad, starting with the singer contemplating suicide after being left at the altar after his bride deserted him, and then telling about the death of his parents. O'Sullivan has said that the song is not autobiographical, as he did not know his father (who died when O'Sullivan was 11) very well, and that his father had mistreated his mother. Also, his mother was still alive when the song was written.

What I always found interesting is that everything Gilbert wrote about in this song wasn’t true. He said in an interview that both of his parents were still alive at the time he wrote it. He has this uncanny ability to put himself in other people’s shoes and write from their perspective, which is one of the reasons he’s one of my favorite singer songwriters.

Good Reaction. He had many hits including "Clair" about his Manager's 5-year-old Daughter who he played with and looked after in return for free boarding and meals from his Manager. His daughter, now 50, says that was some of the happiest times in her life and was made in the early 1970s in a totally different era where the phrase" I want to marry you Clair" was simply meant sweetly and innocently though some brainwashed younger people do not realize the innocence of it but you MUST listen with the accompanying video showing them playing together. It's heartwarming from a bygone era.

The song isn't autobiographical. It's a story about life as experienced by some people. Some songwriters write characters, narrators, who aren't them. Writers like Randy Newman, give the voice of a character in a song. This is what Gilbert O'Sullivan has done in this song. To mistake it for autobiographical is like mistaking an actor for a part they play.

If you ever watched Love Actually, there is a reference to this song when Colin Firth goes to write his book in a foreign country.

Gilbert really had a great talent for putting together songs that tug at the heartstrings - you should try "Nothing Rhymed" and "We Will".

How I have enjoyed this song in my teenager years....who never felt "alone again"?

May I say that you have ( of other reactors that I’ve heard) such a intelligent and artistic way of breaking down the song and artist that we’re listening to.
I think I’ll be cutting some from the heard and listening to you much more.

You know what’s great about this song Harri,…Gilbert said in an interview that the song was not a real life thing,..he simply put himself in the position of someone who felt this way,…That’s genius writing.Truly….,Great reaction.Cry every time I hear it.Thanks again!!!!!!!

I loved this song when I first heard it on 77 WABC Radio here in New York City. It ended up as the #1 song of the year on the top 100 of 77 WABC.

The melody is beautiful, the lyrics are very sad. If you are. not depressed before you hear the song, you will be after listening to it.

How about Catch the Wind by Donavan and Of You Could Read my Mind by Gordon Lightfoot.
2 thought provoking songs and almost brings me to tears

A classic from the 70s that will be listened to 100 years from now. It's not sad- it's healing. We all wait our turn to experience these losses.

"Cats in the Cradle" by Harry Chapin is also a very sad song, but it's a good one.

I've heard you say many times how much you love the 60's music and I believe you, but if you will forgive my saying so, you really seem to have a great affinity for the 70's Singer Songwriters.
