Unless you've heard this song before, and know before hand that it's a very sad song, you would definitely be in for a shock. Partly because the tune is upbeat, and almost bounces along. But when you stop to actually hear the words...yeah. Whoever the song was about had DEFINITELY suffered some major heart ache in his young life. Unfortunately, that IS life; it happens all too often to so many people. I've always like this song, despite it's sad demeanor. If I haven't said it before, Jayvonne, let me say it now; I appreciate it SO MUCH that you really DO listen to the words of these songs. Most people just skim over and only hear every few words throughout. But you really do listen, and it shows in your reaction. We saw, immediately, in your face when he said that he had thought about jumping from that "nearby tower." You feel things very deeply through the song, and that's so awesome. That's the reason we enjoy your channel so much. It's so great to see the expression on someone's face for that very reason. Another GREAT reaction. Take care.

Listened to this song my whole life, I am 53 now. When I was a little girl I use to love the snappy sound. I lost my 12 year old daughter to suicide about 5 years ago then heard this song and finally listened to the words. I am a singer and posted me singing this song on FB one night because I couldn't sleep and this song was here for me to express my feelings. I did lovingly chuckle at your reaction because this is a really sad, snappy song and I know you were not expecting the dark lyrics.

“The pleasure I get from winning a bet is to lose”
    “Bonaparte shandy” instead of Napoleon.
But I suppose that’s why he’s such a great songwriter!

The fact that you say honesty is kind of funny considering he made this story up for this song. The song is beautiful and he is talented, but is it totally necessary to shit on newer music just to elevate older music? There's a lot of amazing and talented new artists out there that are heavily inspired by older artists. Just because you haven't heard them on the radio, doesn't mean they don't exist.

Please react to Gilbert's beautiful, sweet song "Claire." Claire was the little daughter of O'Sullivan's manager (or producer, I forget which) for whom Gilbert O'Sullivan wrote the song. Gilbert would often babysit her for her Dad, and they formed a sweet bond of friendship. Sadly, many people of today's overly-suspicious mindset have condemned the song and Gilbert as "creepy" or worse, not understanding the context nor the time period in which it was written (I'm 65 and remember it quite well). But, in reality, that was not the case between them. It was a wholesome relationship, as Claire herself has publicly stated in her defense of her long-time friend. The video you should react to of him singing "Claire" has actual outdoor home-film footage (filmed by her Dad, I believe) in which Gilbert and Claire are having fun outside, chasing each other around the yard, jumping on a trampoline, etc. Endearing scenes and an equally charming song!

    the lyrics for themselves.

If you want to see what I mean, listen to 'No Surprises' or 'Knives Out' by Radiohead sometime. The only other Gilbert O'Sullivan songs I remember are 'Claire' and 'Get Down'. "Alone Again (Naturally)" is an introspective ballad, starting with the singer contemplating suicide after being left at the altar after his bride deserted him, and then telling about the death of his parents. O'Sullivan has said that the song is not autobiographical, as he did not know his father (who died when O'Sullivan was 11) very well, and that his father had mistreated his mother. Also, his mother was still alive when the song was written.

The catchy flow of the melody sort of belies the sadness of the lyrics - its strange but we had no problem belting it out as a great party number!
