About Number 29's loose button, they focus on it so much to help us identify the Detective while he is disguised. It's a narrative tool the production crew is using to help us viewers since all the masked workers look the same.
We were laughing about this because when we watched my husband and I kept focusing on the black hook on the uniform. We didn’t see the pulled button. Our teenage son was all “Duuuuh! It’s the button!” I just showed him that snippet from the reaction where Steven referred to the black hook. He chuckled, rolled his eyes, and said “ugh old people.” 😂
My mom once told me a story of her childhood (she is Korean). She is very crafty and she was so good at getting the shapes out, so she only had to buy the dalgona candy once and then were able to get another ones for free because she was able to perfectly do it every time. (They give you a free one if you do it right) and the old lady who was selling the candy kindly asked my mom to stop after 10th free candy lol!
As a child I would buy these all the time, and failed. One day my uncle said to me, hey stupid lol go get a string and water 💦 wet the string and put it in the cracks and wait.
This is a Korean game. Children would buy these honey cone at the park as a snack and if they are able to cut out the shape they would get another one for free.

Korean people are usually flattered by foreigners attempting to speak Korean lol. • Gihun (main character) is pronounced like “Gee Hoon” (the G is said like it is in the word goose, not like a J. no G’s in Korean have a J sound) • Saebyeok (the pickpocket girl) is “Say Byok” • Sangwoo (no 218) is said just as it’s spelled for the English pronunciation, properly in Korean it’s more like “song-oo” • Junho (the cop) is “June Ho” or “June Oh” (sometimes their H’s are silent) • Deoksu (the thug) is “Duck Soo” • Minyeo (wavy haired woman) is “Mean Yo” fun fact! Saebyeok (새벽) means “dawn”, and Minyeo (미녀) means “beauty”. 💜
It's no wonder Gi Hun was bad at gambling. HE decides to pick the umbrella because as a child he would lose it and get in trouble. . He also left his umbrella at his ex-wives home. LOL!! The umbrella is clearly not good luck for him. Yet, he picks it. Smh..
His button is dangling. They pan to it to let you know it's the detective, since it would be a little difficult to distinguish him from the rest of the "O"s.
That's what I got from it but they didn't stick to it. They go to straight up just start showing his face through the mask like he's lit up by an Iron Man suit HUD lol. Not that I minded.
The guy at the beginning remembered what the game was. Then he told his group to all pick different shapes knowing that some are harder than others. He picks the easiest and lets his friend pick umbrella. What a POS move by the guy.
If you guys review the end, you'll hear a flash back audio...the guard who got shot for removing his facemask was the dude who questioned the police officer (29), and said they would talk later. ...and I felt for Nikki during this episode. ;-)
In an interview or behind the scenes of Squid Game on YT the actor that plays Gi-hun said that that particular day was extremely hot and everyone was sweating a lot, which gave a great effect to the game. The sweat you see on all the players was real, not fake. I loved how pretty much 98% of everything you see in Squid Game was actually real and not acting or CGI and how all the sets were built from scratch and were real. Like Red Light Green Light, they built that set and it was so huge that they were able to get around 500 extras (real life people) to play the game. Usually something like that would be CGI people. But all the bodies and everything there were real people. And all the future games you guys haven't seen yet were also sets built from scratch and the actors actually participated in all the games themselves. Nothing about it was fake, it was all real, except of course death haha! Oh and the look of awe on the characters faces when they first see the games/sets were real and not acting. The director/writer decided to not let any of the actors see the sets for the games beforehand and the actors simply had a general idea of what it might look like in their heads. So when they actually filmed the scenes, that was the first time the actors were able to see the sets and the wonder and awe they showed on their faces was real and not acting. In interviews they even said that they were so impressed that they started taking selfies with the sets during filming breaks!
Thats actually one of the best thing in South Koreans productions.. Even in Kpop MVs all you see in their music videos are "Real".. They are not CGI. They will totally built everything according the concept they intended. They dont usually use CgI. Thats why all Celebrities in Korea always make sure to give their best hardworks in everything they do! Even if they are just extras!
This episode was nerve-wracking to watch. Excellent review, and I'm loving rewatching with you. I keep noticing things I missed the first time around. Can't wait for the next one!!!!
about the scene in the beginning: i think the reason why sungwoo looks a bit put off by what gihun's saying is because he mentioned briquette stoves. that's what sungwoo used for his su!cide attempt (ep. 2)
I thougt he just annoyed by Gi-Hun who is to chill about this thing and talk too much... He's a strategy man after all, and what Gi Hun do is not just pointless, but can be a disadvantages.

Sang Woo wasn't trying to cook dinner while he was in the bathtub. 🤣It's also why he went into the tub in his suit, so he wouldn't be found nude.

My daughter made some honeycomb - circles and stars made with cookie cutters - and we tried it. It's freaking impossibly hard to do. So brittle. We failed utterly.
As weird as it sounds I love seeing Nikki so stressed. Makes for a great reaction! Also about the pick-pocket knife and the lighter from the other girl, the logic in my head canon has always been, if a player can slip something past the guards at inspection then it’s fair game. Because there’s no way the guards didn’t see that chick using the lighter in honeycomb.

Since you guys were asking, it kept zooming in on the cops pink uniform because it had a loose button on the front pocket to indicate that it's him and not another staff. It's fast and hard to see the first time. I didn't notice it for a while.

I know the creator said it wasn’t actually written to have a follow up but with its success he/they (Netflix) won’t rule it out yet. Apparently these cookies are sold by little old ladies in front of elementary schools in Korea. If you can get the shape out clean they give you another cookie for free.

I think the zoom in is just to let us know its the cop so we can follow him around whilst he blends in. This episode was intense AF, I was on edge the entire way through.
Your success is entirely dependent on the makers of dalgona. They control how thin they are and how deep the shapes are. In the making of this they ordered from one vender that turned out too thick so they hired an on-set dalgona maker who made it thin for the shoot

Those players were gunned down at the end because they ran out of time. Don't worry about our main characters, we saw that they all completed the honeycomb challenge.
Great reaction. I got so mad when the guy who picked triangle clearly realised the game and yet still encouraged others to pick a harder shape! That’s cold. I’m not familiar with the game being from the uk, but I did know what honeycomb is and therefore how hard a game this would be! Do you not get honeycomb in the US, as all the US reactors have been confused by honeycomb. If you don’t get Cadbury’s Crunchies out there that’s a crime!
I played this around 4th-6th grade and it’s insanely difficult from what I remember. I completely forgot that I did until this episode revived an old memory. I remember blisters on my hand from digging with the needle and the taste of the honeycomb after everyone finished. I remember choosing a star and not knowing what for. I definitely didn’t finish but that didn’t stop me from eating it.
I think it's if ANYONE finds out who you are under your mask, you die. So, even though the player wasn't an issue when it comes to seeing his face, because the Square took his mask off while facing his fellow Playstation buttons, they saw his face, so he had to die. Or at least that is what I have gathered.
Yeah, they are given clear instructions on the wall of their rooms to ONLY take the mask off when in their room. So it seems like an ANYONE who sees your face situation. I agree.
You know, after having already watched this in Korean, hearing the dub is actually kinda funny (reminds me of when my friends and I watched The Host and giggled like mad at the dub voices. “He didn’t have enough calories as a kid!” ). The reactions are fantastic! I love it when reviewers are expressive or freaking out, poor Nikki.
30 viewers disliked the fact that Steve has the choice to watch his shows 'however he wants, as he desires, as he pleases'. It's episode 3 y'all, quit complaining!
All the actors are phenomenal in this show , i especially loved Ho-yeon Jung who plays Sae-byeok she is a South Korean super model, now actress playing a North Korean defector so well it's so impressive she is truly amazing and so is the entire cast, set and directing. the story it self is not the most complex with both very realistic and imaginative moments, however the characters and dynamics surely are deep Can't wait for more of your reactions.
The honeycomb with a shape is a common snack you can see at the gate of an elementary school in Korea. It costed about 30 cents each (when I was a kid, don't know how much it costs now). And when you successfully carve out the given shape, you get one free honeycomb with another shape. Only A very few managed to get 1~2 free honeycombs. As you witnessed the show, it is extremely difficult to carve out a shape.
It’s so funny you mentioned the masks reminding you of PlayStation! That’s actually why they used the triangle, circle, and plus signs on the different masks. They based it on the game console.

Dalgona (honeycomb) is a korean street candy It's made of heated/melted sugar stirred rigorously and then baking soda is added and it's stirred until it's puffy,creamy looking and kinda thick. It's then poured out, flattened and has a shape pressed into it when it's almost hard.... Alot of times it was put on a stick to eat. Vendors sold it close to the schools and the game was basically that the kids would have to try to get the shape out without breaking it (like in the show)but depending on the vendor if you won you would either get the one that you already have for free or you would get an extra one for free. I'm not Korean, but my uncle is and he used to make this for me,my siblings and cousins all the time as kids when we would visit him.

Sang-woo embezzled huge amounts of money, of course he isn't to be trusted - as proven by the fact he pretended not to know what the game was and let his old friend take the umbrella. He did at one point call his name as if he wanted to say sorry or something, but he said nothing.
When you asked how they get to be the red guys in masks, I had seen a theory about how they may pick them. When the guy makes initial contact with you to play the game with the red and blue squares in the subway, if you chose blue, you are a player vs red, you are one of those guys.
I want to see The Front Man's story in season 2. FAN THEORY - THE FRONT MAN WAS A COP WHO TOOK BRIBES (According to someone who was able to translate the player file for the Front Man.

I’d say the reason none of the red suits notice the detective is because their masks don’t afford them much peripheral vision so they wouldn’t necessarily notice someone coming from behind.

That's briquet stove, a small charcoal stove you see a lot in Asian cooking for grilling and toasting.

Honeycomb is a traditional South Korean children's game, like Squid Game. That's why almost all international viewers didn't known about it.

I genuinely believe that Gi-Hun was of the few (if not the only one) with the umbrella shape that did pass.
Just imagine if the person in charge of pressing the shapes didn't do a good job and it was harder to get certain one's out..

Your success is entirely dependent on the makers of dalgona. They control how thin they are and how deep the shapes are. In the making of this they ordered from one vender that turned out too thick so they hired an on-set dalgona maker who made it thin for the shoot

Great reaction. I got so mad when the guy who picked triangle clearly realised the game and yet still encouraged others to pick a harder shape! That’s cold. I’m not familiar with the game being from the uk, but I did know what honeycomb is and therefore how hard a game this would be! Do you not get honeycomb in the US, as all the US reactors have been confused by honeycomb. If you don’t get Cadbury’s Crunchies out there that’s a crime!

I played this around 4th-6th grade and it’s insanely difficult from what I remember. I completely forgot that I did until this episode revived an old memory. I remember blisters on my hand from digging with the needle and the taste of the honeycomb after everyone finished. I remember choosing a star and not knowing what for. I definitely didn’t finish but that didn’t stop me from eating it.

I think it's if ANYONE finds out who you are under your mask, you die. So, even though the player wasn't an issue when it comes to seeing his face, because the Square took his mask off while facing his fellow Playstation buttons, they saw his face, so he had to die. Or at least that is what I have gathered.
Yeah, they are given clear instructions on the wall of their rooms to ONLY take the mask off when in their room. So it seems like an ANYONE who sees your face situation. I agree.

All the actors are phenomenal in this show , i especially loved Ho-yeon Jung who plays Sae-byeok she is a South Korean super model, now actress playing a North Korean defector so well it's so impressive she is truly amazing and so is the entire cast, set and directing. the story it self is not the most complex with both very realistic and imaginative moments, however the characters and dynamics surely are deep Can't wait for more of your reactions.
Props to that guy whose umbrella got broken. He went out like a King!

The honeycomb with a shape is a common snack you can see at the gate of an elementary school in Korea. It costed about 30 cents each (when I was a kid, don't know how much it costs now). And when you successfully carve out the given shape, you get one free honeycomb with another shape. Only A very few managed to get 1~2 free honeycombs. As you witnessed the show, it is extremely difficult to carve out a shape.

Dalgona (honeycomb) is a korean street candy
It's made of heated/melted sugar stirred rigorously and then baking soda is added and it's stirred until it's puffy,creamy looking and kinda thick. It's then poured out, flattened and has a shape pressed into it when it's almost hard.... Alot of times it was put on a stick to eat. Vendors sold it close to the schools and the game was basically that the kids would have to try to get the shape out without breaking it (like in the show)but depending on the vendor if you won you would either get the one that you already have for free or you would get an extra one for free. I'm not Korean, but my uncle is and he used to make this for me,my siblings and cousins all the time as kids when we would visit him.

When you asked how they get to be the red guys in masks, I had seen a theory about how they may pick them. When the guy makes initial contact with you to play the game with the red and blue squares in the subway, if you chose blue, you are a player vs red, you are one of those guys.
I'm sure they noticed the lighter. I don't think they cared because they didn't say you had to only use the needle.
Surely they could smell burning honeycomb really well too!

I’d say the reason none of the red suits notice the detective is because their masks don’t afford them much peripheral vision so they wouldn’t necessarily notice someone coming from behind.
