I have to share my Village People story with you. Many years ago I was working on reception at Channel 10 in Sydney. I just sat down in my chair, looked straight ahead and...behold....the entire group were walking down the stairs towards me in their full attire. I will never forget it. A beautiful memory.
This interview is so very special to me because the Village People provided the music that was the soundtrack to my coming out!! Their music made us young gay folks in the late 70s feel cool, hip, sexy and most of all, validated in a very unwelcoming world. Gays and straights loved their music because it was so joyful and danceable! Thank you Felipe for taking the time to grace our show with your presence. You are as sweet and adorable as I always imagined you would be and I absolutely adore you.
I really enjoyed hearing Felipe's story about his life with the Village People and his solo career. I know that "Can't Stop The Music" gets vilified a lot, but it's still kitschy fun. Watch it on a double bill with "Xanadu" on a Saturday night and it makes for a very cool, retro vibe-filled evening. Thanks Harvey for a fantastic interview!
Wow another super great interview Harvey! You always have the most interesting guests. Felipe looks and sounds excellent for any age, let alone 70! I wish I had his energy and zest for life, don't you?
Yes Felipe is in great shape. He’s so beautiful inside and out. I really enjoyed interviewing him because when I was in my 20s I was smitten by every member of the group
Harvey, there is so much I want to express about this interview, I don't know where to start. First, EXCELLENT interview! ⭐ You always ask the BEST questions. Second, I was living in NYC (mid-70s and 80s) when The Village People were launched. To me, it was such a special time in that city. It was gritty and raw, but at the same time, filled with so much creative energy. So, anytime I hear one of The VP songs, I'm immediately transported to another time and wonderful memories. What I love about Felipe is that he was very open, honest, and direct with his responses, without being mean or gossipy. He's got that wonderful New York trait that love about how they tell it like it is. Thanks so much for this interview, Harvey! I enjoyed it so much that I'm going to watch again tonight! ☺
Felipe and Glenn where my favorites loved and still love their music.Wow he looks amazing for 70 hasn't aged at all.Wish he would write a book.Keep on making music and R.I.P. Glenn.Great interview.
What a great interview! I find his honesty refreshing. I would have been more than honored to sit next to the village people! I love many decades but my very favorite is the 70's. 💯💯🙂💯
Oh no you didn't!! Lol. I can literally still remember where I was when I first heard The Village People and trust me, we all went running to our telephones to tell each other. We had never seen anything like this and of course we knew they were blatantly gay. I remember getting into mild arguments with straight friends who insisted that they were not gay and that they were all representative of heterosexual masculinity lol. Loved this Mr. B !!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I couldn't wait for this interview. The Village People were so much fun back in the day. I still have their albums (yes albums) .My favorites were Felipe and David Hodo (construction worker). I went to see them at Macy's in 1980. They were promoting that movie. BTW Harvey was uncharacteristically quiet during this interview. He just let Felipe talk most of the time and Felipe still looking good!
I liked some songs of the Village People, but my mother adored “YMCA” and would often perform it at gatherings. I decided to watch this interview because it’s Indigenous Month, and I wanted to discuss it at work. Recently, we’ve been watching documentaries about the tragic events in the schools during our meetings, so it seemed fitting to watch this interview as well. Initially, I believed the ‘Indian’ member of the group wasn’t actually Indigenous, but I was surprised to learn his father was Apache. Historically, Native Americans were rarely cast as Native Americans in films. However, actors like Tom Jackson, Jay Silverheels, Diehl Bertie, Adam Beach, and Tantoo Cardinal have all been Indigenous actors who have done great work in this area. Kudos to Harvey for highlighting their contributions! 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Harvey, another fabulous interview with one of my favorite people from the iconic group! You get all the people I really want to see!! Of course you asked all the right questions!!
Great interview Harvey! I recently pulled out my Village People albums (yes original vinyl Casablanca releases!). They still sound great, beautifully recorded and produced. It's nice to hear Pelipe is doing well, and yes, looks great at 70!
We teens did not know that the Village People were gay in 1978 - we just loved the music. In fact, not everyone in the band was gay. It was like James Brown meets KC and the Sunshine Band. The Village People took off from where The Trammps left off. The People are part of the line that starts from The Monkees through to New Kids On The Block and BTS.
@@harveybrownstoneinterviews8980 Thank you, sir! And colour me jealous that you get to talk to all my childhood/teen heroes! I've watched your Sheena Easton interview twice now.
I think the lead singer was straight and was married to phylicia Rashad. But the majority of the band members were gay. Which is amazing considering the time period
I would love to see you interview Susan Flannery from "The Bold and the Beautiful" one day. I'm usually not into daytime soap operas but one day I saw an episode and I was blown away by what a brilliant actress Miss Flannery was. It was like watching Katharine Hepburn, she had that old school "tough broad" vibe about her that ceased to exist after the Golden Age of Hollywood.
Im a young 22 bisexual man (prefer men) but i absolutely love the village people and their beautiful music that you can dance all night long. They definitely are trailblazers ❤
I love them too. It was a real thrill having Felipe on our show. I’m glad you enjoyed this interview. I hope you will subscribe to our TH-cam channel. 🙏❤️
Oh, and a memory that's totally true: Years ago we were watching "Can't Stop The Music" with a group of friends. At one point when Bruce Jenner came on, I spontaneously said "he's a woman." My friends said "WHAT??!" I said " he's a woman inside, you can just tell." They all laughed and told me I was crazy. My significant other still remembers it.
@@harveybrownstoneinterviews8980 - I've been a huge fan since the 70s and collected lots of stuff over the years. I suppose the word "iconic" could be a bit subjective. Perhaps iconic and popular might be two separate concepts. Felipe fits both well. I consider the original group from 1977-1979 when they had their hits as the iconic portion of the group. From a popularity standpoint, some might choose Victor's replacement (Ray) as more popular just because he was in the 1980 film and was with the group longer. I love them all, but the original group with the hits that I watched on TV shows in the late 70s are the icons to me. Felipe, Victor, David, Randy, Glenn, & Alex.

The stage musical of Xanadu is here on TH-cam. If you like the film, you'll love the stage version!

HE WAS ALWAYS MY FAVORITE! GREAT INTERVIEW
Thanks!
GREAT INTERVIEW .
Thank you so much
I remember them making cameos on Love Boat and Married With Children. I was a child in the late 70's.
I loved them so much
Harvey, we like when you split screen more, to see you react & do your signature smile & laugh... luv VP!!
Awww thank you so much. We will try to do more split screens just for you. I didn’t realize I had a “signature” smile and laugh!!

I think the lead singer was married to Cosby Show star Philicia. Rashad. I am assuming he was hetero or no possibly.
Yes the lead singer was straight.
I had straight friends who were sure the group were straight!! They were shocked to find out that everyone except the lead singer was gay
Absolutely loved this. Felipe has such a interesting life and is so charismatic. Really looking forward to the book xxx

I was “uncharacteristically quiet” because I was mesmerized - maybe even a bit smitten - by my favorite member of the sexiest music group ever!!

@@harveybrownstoneinterviews8980 I didn’t say I didn’t like them. I was into the BEEGEES more hehe. GREAT JOB, Harvey!!
Well I can’t deny that the Bee Gees were fabulous. But ooooh those Village People were soooo sexy

I can’t wait to read his book whenever it’s finished! I don’t think any other former VP member has released one yet
That’s correct. Let’s hope Felipe gets his book released soon.
