I dont care what anyone says ..They were rennisance men of modern music..absolutely Bloody brilliant.. Its like listening to a masterpiece by Bach , or Brahms, or Mozart......I was mesmerized by this bands ability as a teen...and am still entirely left speechless to this day !
And Freddie, the music gods broke the mold when they made him. There might be someone someday who's as good as Freddie was, but nobody will ever be Freddie.
headrushindi yessss! This band was years ahead of their time and sadly by the 1990s and early 2000 and here after people are using autotune in their microphone because they can’t sing. Justin Bieber and Britney Spears... all of them! Ariana Grande and Rihanna, jessie J and Beyoncé. & pink are some of the only ones that can sing.b
Queen's sound was so prevalent in this song. Freddie Mercury was a musical genius. He could play the piano incredibly well, his voice is unmatched, and his stage presence was Unreal. When my sons were teenagers, they introduced me to Queen. I have never regretted their music is fantastic.
Probably someone has already made this comment but it’s worthwhile to listen to Freddie’s live version of this song. It was before it was was recorded on the album and it’s just Freddie and his piano, and it’s a performance which literally takes your breath away.....
I was speechless...spellbound...it affected my every emotion. The harmonies were exquisite. If this was sung at a wedding many tears would flow. No words!
Another example of a wonderful but obscure song, not quite Queen but up to the same standards, is Brian May singing "Teasin' Around." Try it, you'll love it.
i'd be willing to bet he's out there or was at one point and things just didn't work in his favor. I'm that guy for a girl I like right now in my own life. This song got me good tonight.
Freddie died in 1991, due to complications from AIDS. Freddie could sing everything from Metal (Stone Cold Crazy), to Opera (Barcelona with Montserrat Caballe.) Of course the fact all 4 members of Queen wrote songs meant they covered a lot of different genres. Also, you might want to check out Freddie singing this live @Hyde Park '76. Just him and his piano, it is almost ethereal. Different to the studio version.

This song is a masterpiece..not just the lyrics, passion in his voice but the actual tune of the song is so melancholy and almost puts you in a trance. I read that Freddie did all the harmonies and multi-tracked them. It doesn't get enough credit in their catalog. I was mesmerized and brought to tears the first time i heard it. The live version with just Freddie and piano is awesome as well but I prefer the harmonies added. I have also looked up on You tube instrumental piano versions of this song and they are exquisite...you can really hear the real chords and runs in the song. Never be another Freddie!
I love this song. So glad Holly recommended it and glad you played it here. Bravo! The harmonies are out of this world. They take you to another place. No band could harmonize like Queen.
Bryan Hogge The funny thing is, yes, every song they did was very different from every other and yet all their songs are unmistakably Queen and Freddie Mercury. There's never been a group like them and never will be.
😀😂 I noticed how you scratched, as if you had goosebumps on your scalp!! I like that good reaction to such a beautiful song, just Freddie and his piano.
This song shows the true depth Queen was capable of. No concert version can capture the real spirit of the studio version. It is absolutely the best ballad Queen ever did and can only be described as a musical masterpiece. The entire album this is from, A Day At The Races, is great through and through. Check out Tie Your Mother Down, White Man and Somebody To Love which was their only hit single from the album. Enjoy!
I'm a big fan of Queen from the 70s.. I think Queen reached a true level of artistry on Day At The Races and Freddie kills on piano and vox here. I've been playing piano for 30+ years and even though this is a fairly easy chord progression for any serious musician I can't play quite like Freddie... no one can... Also a big up to Brian May for his amazing guitar orchestrations...
This is actually the first time I've heard this song of theirs too, and WOW those harmonies were amazing! If you get a chance (and haven't heard them already) you should listen to "Who Wants to Live Forever?" and "The Show Must Go On" both also by Queen.
Yeah, what you said! I've loved Queen since the first time I heard "Killer Queen" but only have a few albums. You are absolutely right, "Who Wants to Live Forever?" and "The Show Must Go On" are prime examples of emotion and artistry. I'd add "Under Pressure". There are only a handful of songs that make me stop whatever I'm doing and just listen. "Under Pressure" is one of them.

How happy it makes me to see so many new fans being intro'd to this fabulous music. What talent!

Queen. Just incredible every Queen song has a unique quality. They used the caesura to perfection in this song. "A caesura; a break in a verse where one phrase ends and the following phrase begins. It may be a comma, a tick, or two slashed lines //. In time value this break may vary between the slightest perception of silence all the way up to a full pause. Considered a breath, a caesura in music represents a similar break or pause. The length of a caesura where notated is at the discretion of the conductor." Rip: Freddie 🌹.
