I purchased a 2013 S model 60 two years ago for $16.5k. Thinking I would take advantage of the free supercharging. I probably wouldn’t do it again. I would only purchase an older model S if you live close to a supercharger. Like 5-10 mins tops. Charging time is awfully slow. 60-90 mins for a full charge. I suggest either you like to read, nap, or go jog home….or figure out what to do in the meantime. If you are a person with a busy schedule , You wouldn’t want to be sitting at a charging station several times a week. It is annoying. Especially if there is a line when you get to the supercharging station. That means you could potentially drive 15+ mins to the charging station, Wait in line for another 15+mins, then have to wait 60+ mins to charge, then drive home. It;s a lot of work! However, For $10-15K You’re getting a lot of car and technology. You can purchase it for your kid as their first vehicle, download the app, and you’ll know exactly where your children are at all times. Don;t tell them that. 😂😂😂

Great points, and thanks for the watch!!
The smart way would be to charge 10 minute intervals. You have to calculate usage mile/hour charge time to make it efficient fir home charging. A supercharger can gain 200 miles in 15 minutes on average. We have one 15 minutes from us. So we go takes 5 minutes once a week to keep it from being a time sync and keep the charge up high. For trips out of state we stop at stations every 50 to 70 miles for 10 mins it works out just fine and never gets low. Most gas pumps are so slow it takes that long to stop, pay and get gas so it works out the same in time.
@@pranshukrishna5105 who said anything about supercharging “everyday” lol. That’s sounds painful if I’m honest. But let’s say you did have to drive 200-300 miles a day and really wanted a Tesla. These cars are smart enough to control the amount of supercharge to preserve the battery. I am actually at a supercharger now, and I am only getting 24kw. This is for a few reasons. I am already more than half battery full and I did not precondition my battery to be warm enough to receive full charge. It’s only 40 degrees here today. Lithium-ion batteries are constantly degrading-even when they’re not in use-simply as a consequence of time and thermodynamics. This is referred to as calendar aging, which is a result of a lithium-ion battery’s chemical makeup, as there are unavoidable chemical side reactions that take place at all times. The primary side reaction is the growth of the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI). In the first charge cycle after cell assembly in the manufacturing process, SEI grows and acts as a passivating film on the anode, preventing uncontrolled reaction between the electrolyte and the anode. However, the SEI slowly grows throughout the battery’s lifetime, which continues to consume the electrolyte and lithium ions. Consumption of the cell’s lithium ions through SEI growth is one contributing factor to the degradation mode known as loss of lithium inventory (LLI).
@@shawnm8232 that was a lot of words to just say batteries degrade. I think we all know that about every battery ever made haha. Did you have a question? Or helpful info so someone watching?

There are plenty of videos out there about what you are trying to bring up here, this is not a video about that. Please comment on those videos. I believe your issue is that you are relating the entire vehicle to just the battery. If this was a regular ICE car I doubt you would comment on just one singular part like you did here. Because you would hopefully understand that the video is about the vehicle as a whole. If you were you have comments with practical and helpful information for someone watching (ie. Even if the battery has been changed, it doesn't preclude a fault from happening and it totalling the car. So the averge buyer should beware. Thats my point. Why would battery be an issue? If so, engines are always full of issue. More moving parts and more things to go wrong. Percentage wise, tesla is the way to go for longevity.

But at this point paying someone $2,000 to install essentially a (too late) bandaid, does not make more sense than just buying a new U version from tesla for 6k. I know it'll probably be a refurbished drive. But as long as it comes from Tesla, is a U version, and has a warranty I believe 6k is more than worth it.
+1 on this....the drive units and the batteries are the weak points on the older S. The drive unit WILL fail, you can't prevent it. The newer "U" variant is SUPPOSED to fix this, but it's too soon to tell. I replaced the drive unit on my 2014 out of warranty last December with the U variant. It failed a month later and was replaced with a 2nd U variant. I sold it in April so I'm not sure how well THAT one is holding up!
@@ferrynpalmer3875 for sure!! Hence why the warranty is needed when doing any work on the drive unit. Those that get the delete installed have 0 warranty and if it fails the best day they are just out 2k, that they could have put toward the replacement U unit.

@@LeTheyCallMe the BEST way is to get documentation from previous owner. That's the easiest and best way to ensure it was replaced correctly. There are certain apps out there that allow you to get specific stats on your tesla including detailed battery info, but sometimes even that is not enough.

Here is a forum with great info:

@@stylin525 my little one is only 6 so doubt it'll be around for 10 more years...but if it is you are spot on. You made a VERY valid point. I live in a major Metropolitan area so we have superchargers everywhere. I have two within 8min of my house, but I can picture what it would be like if I didn't like you.
Most gas pumps are so slow it takes that long to stop, pay and get gas so it works out the same in time.
everday supercharging is bad for the car isn't it, so is free supercharging of any use
@@pranshukrishna5105 who said anything about supercharging “everyday” lol. That’s sounds painful if I’m honest. If you are someone that has to drive 200-300 miles everyday then honestly I would recommend a hybrid. But for us normal people a supercharge every 3-4 days is more than enough.

There are tons of holes to use from where the old nose cone was. If I ever perfect this method I'll redo and make a video.
@@mariotvines Yeah I'm sure you knew that the SEI slowly grows throughout the lifetime of the battery :-)

@ not about the interworkings of a lithium ion battery lmao. Could you imagine if folks clicked on that title and thumbnail and all I did was talk about the science behind batteries in general? There are plenty of videos out there about what you are trying to bring up here, this is not a video about that. Please comment on those videos. I believe your issue is that you are relating the entire vehicle to just the battery. If this was a regular ICE car I doubt you would comment on just one singular part like you did here. Because you would hopefully understand that the video is about the vehicle as a whole. If you were you have comments with practical and helpful information for someone watching (ie. What to lol out for, signs of an aging battery, preventative measures) then you would be being helpful. Instead you just rag on a battery talking about degradation. Do you see why I may find it unhelpful? Anyway I wish you the best man. Whatever you drive I hope it's as fun as this thing. Happy holidays.

Extremely out of date? Why do you say that? I would love to hear your argument as to by my vehicle is extremely out of date? And who buys a used car and anticipates "long term support"? lmao. I guess you didn't watch the video, but the battery was replace recently, and the car has features that even new cars do not.
You can get a 30-year-old car serviced with an oil change right now at Jiffy Lube. I can go to Autozone and get alof of parts for old cars. For popular cars, OEMs are still making parts. Who buys a used car and thinks it will have long-term support? Everyone. It has always been that way. I also didn't watch the entire video, if I'm being honest. You may be asking who believes an EV will have long term support? The answer to that will again be everyone. The presnes of features some cars don't have dont make it inherently better. There is nothing wrong with buying the car as I stated. But free charging for the laymen shouldn't be the only thing the averge person thinks about. Even if the battery has been changed, it doesn't preclude a fault from happening and it totalling the car. So the averge buyer should beware. Thats my point. It could be a diamond in the rough, or it could be a paperweight
Why would battery be an issue? If so, engines are always full of issue. More moving parts and more things to go wrong. Percentage wise, tesla is the way to go for longevity.
@ the battery is an issue is because batteries degrade. Engines degrade overtime just to a much less significant degree. A full power train replacement for a car is quite a bit cheaper than a battery. Tesla model s has a 73/100 in reliability by Jd power. Not terrible but far from great. The model 3/Y are much more reliable. An S from 2013 will obviously be less reliable as Tesla fixed many issues on the S in 11 years. You can’t say Tesla reliability you must break out the vehicle. The S/X are notoriously unreliable.
@@TheSonyExperience ok well good bc im ab to buy a model Y and run up miles on uber w it. Hopefully this will work out. Looking for one around 40k miles
Check your emf...your driving in a microwave....
@@jamesrodgres2813 oh my gosh really?!?
I'm scared now. 😂😂
Have you done any research on this? Let me answer that, no hahaha.
But thanks for the comment. Helping the algorithm lol.
Also if you really do believe this, I have some protective devices I am selling to protect you from the harmful Tesla's on the road. It may look like a tin foil hat, but it is a sophisticated device :)
20k to replace the battery 😂
@@AmmerSlammer is incorrect lol. Have you had one done? If they charges you 20k you should sue.
@ sorry I stand corrected. It’s only 13-15k.
JD Power quotes the following battery replacement estimates for Tesla models, including labor:
Model S: $13,000-$15,000
@ that’s more like it. Ha ha but now you see why I wanted to make sure that the model S that I buy it had the battery replaced recently already. If I didn’t have paperwork that showed that the battery was replaced already I wouldn’t of bought it. Thanks for watching the video!
