I moved to MT 9 years ago from the Sierra Nevada's because of my family. It's not as great as some people say it is. There's a lot of learning curves. I would move back if I could. The best thing is that the people are nice. But the rest... must have snow tires, must have lots of wood for heat or spend a lot to heat your home. Handling each piece of wood at least 3 times get tiring, and you need so much of it. If you use electric heat and the electricity goes out in the winter your home will probably freeze, pipes burst, which has to be fixed right away no matter how cold it is or how expensive, so the running water in the house doesn't rot the wood. You must have back up ways of heating your home. The winters are long, what sun we do see isn't strong enough to penetrate the atmosphere and make the body produce vitamin D. Must take lots of vitamin D in the winter or the depression is going to be crippling. Each winter I'm here it seems longer and longer no matter how much D I take. The snow starts off charming and quaint, but then it doesn't go away for months, it's just white everywhere, for months. Driving in the snow is scary. Just plain scary, and it takes a long time to get anywhere. If you move here move to a road that has a school bus route, so at least the county has to plow that road. If you don't you have to plow roads yourself or hire someone else to do it, and they may not be able to get there in a timely fashion because they have so many other roads to plow. In the summer it's just brown, everything is brown. It was like this where I came from in California, but at least in the winters there in most places everything was green and pretty. In the summer there's deer everywhere, at first it's so cute and charming, but soon you discover it's very easy to hit one and ruin your car. They dart across the road at any moment, and because of this there are many many deer carcasses along the roads. The job market does suck. To live in MT for most people is to just accept that you're going to be poor, you're going to struggle financially. There's so many little things that you learn the hard way when you move here. This is why the smart people are snow birds, if they can afford it. Also, what good parts there are to Montana are just going to diminish the more people move here. The more populated this area is the more of it's charm it's going to lose. If despite all the hardship here, you like it, inviting more people here isn't going to keep it nice for long. Already it's not as clean and pristine as it used to be.

@dreemwevur I was born in Roseville, went to high school in Susanville (Sierra Nevadas), worked my way through college at Chico State, 28 years as a LEO in Butte Co.. You couldn’t pay me to go back to that godforsaken state. Energy here is easily 2/3 less, if not 3/4, than PG&E. CA wanted $840 for just 2020’s registration on my travel trailer. I paid $325 here for PERMANENT, personalized/specialized plates. Never pay a dime again. My car, truck, motorcycle and atv, $1k a year there. I’ll save $10,000ish in 5 years just on vehicle registration. Everything except housing and liquor is cheaper here. Food is the same. I wake up giggling every winter morning that I was out of that 100-125 summer heat in full gear, then pop a multi vitamin. Sounds like you really should move back and get a job if you’re mentally not strong enough to live in this beautiful place. You must’ve lived in the foothills of the Sierra Nevadas if snow scares you... :^) I do miss true Chinese food and sushi but that’s the only stress I have here in the winter lol

@Gary Bowen completely agree with you! Coming from CA as a LEO with middle of the road politics (save our forests and deport illegals), I’ve watched CA and the fed democrats consistently pushing billions at people who refuse to work or illegal immigrants (not counting handicapped obviously) and them in turn pushing for allowing illegals the ability to vote as well as allowing convicted felons. I had a lot of respect for how hard the illegals worked in CA, but at the end of the day, they received thousands monthly in aid, free education and healthcare and paid no income tax. All so a political party could buy their vote. It’s highly disrespectful to every single taxpaying US citizen and more so, to those immigrants that came here and went through the process to become legalized.

Better hope that they start making cheap robots to work in restaurants and stores because normal people are being forced out of the area by insanely high housing costs.

Too lonely slipping and breaking body parts, long ambulance waits/response times, issues galore. Pipes froze up. One important point for those coming from high cost of living places. The population may be low here, and of course we have our share of poverty, but you probably won't do as well as you think here. If you just have a few million and think your gonna buy some land and become a big shot around here get ready to be disappointed. If you show up to the wrong place and start bragging about money and how well off you are, I guarantee there will be dozens of people who won't be impressed. There are ranches and families who date back well over a hundred years who have amassed 10,000s of acres. There are ranches who spent more in harvesting equipment than you will make in your entire lifetime. I've driven down gravel roads for hours and never left one owners property.
Stay humble. Don't talk out your ass. Listen to advice. Learn by watching locals and how they react to situations like weather and seasons. Spend within your means, accidents happen often up here and you need to be ready for them. Buy a 4x4. Trespassing in quite a few mountainous locations will get you shot and dumped in a ravine. Follow simple rules and you'll love it here, Don't and you'll never leave fast enough.

Leona Denson Shows are frequently “shot” where they have the most financial incentives. This is why the Yellowstone production left Utah. Shows are shot where studios are provided the most economic benefit. Vancouver BC in Canada and Georgia are two spots that have figured that out. The studios then do a good job of managing where they are shooting to emulate other places, i.e. Star Wars, shot largely in England, not in a galaxy far far away. :).

Extracting yourself from (?) after skidding off roadway. Alaska has always been NUMBER ONE in youthful death BY for centuries. Montana is not much different. Accept the reality, then go for it. Thing is there is big cities in Texas. Not so much in Montana. How far is it to the nearest NFL stadium for example? There isn't one between St. Paul MN and Seattle WA. I live in the capitol and the population is only about 50k in the nearby area. We don't have a german car dealer or a shopping mall for example.

Would like to get back to MT eventually, but am looking for a place I can afford. In the 20+ years since I lived there, prices have escalated out of my range in places like Missoula, the Flathead, Bozo (wouldn't live there anyway ;-)), the Bitterroot, and maybe Billings. I think the best option for me would be Butte or Anaconda. Lots of history, house prices still reasonable, great people. Don't tell anybody!
In the '70s I had a house in Butte on Granite St. It was a brick Victorian with 10 1/2 ft. ceilings and 3 stained glass windows. Got it for 12K. No, that's not a misprint. That same house is now probably about 10 times as much, but compared to many other places in the state it's a screaming bargain.
    Nice video series.

The reason my lady and I want to move to the countryside is we wish we had real problems instead of the fake problems cities make up. Like I would love to have to go to the general store in a tiny town 40 miles from my house to prepare for the winter cuz the only road out of my area will be snowed out for 3 months instead of fake made up problems from the cities like your toilet drainage pipe is 1/4 inch too small.

It's sounds real good but trust me I have been here for most of my life, people here still have water wells that go dry, no water, you get to haul water or better have a few thousand in the bank for a new well, they don't finance. That tiny town grocery did it than when the cars break down and won't start guess what, no food unless you know someone who can give you a ride. Those nice country houses in open fields, fight mice year around keeping those things out, real hard to do. Better have money for big snow tires and batteries that go bad way to young because of bad winters, need a garage. Being snowed in is fun at first tends to get real old year after year, forgot that coffee at store oh that's an hour drive to the store and back for coffee. I'm used to it but a lot of folks just can not adjust.

Community forums might be my suggestion Adam. Each town usually has them. Looking over google maps of town/areas you might focus try to locate hiring agencies, even large ranch/farm related industry. Public agencies always have openings for mechanics of every department from fire ambulance too state federal service departments. Good money and benefits, possibly even offer housing as well. Just a suggestion. 38 years retired career field. I just know alittle somin about all of them. 😎 Good luck 👍
