Just a heads up about the cell service. You should be able to rent sat phones from the major cities. I'm not sure where exactly but I subscribe to several outdoor channels and many of them swear by them.
Sure the locals will leave you alone to enjoy the state; unless you are a gay couple who forgets how homophobic the state is and show affection for each other in public...then you want to watch your back.

I was born and raised in MT, and you could spend years here and still not see everything. Us Montanans really don't like tourists because there is so much disrespect for the land, it's really frustrating. I spend a ton of time in the outdoors hiking, camping, kayaking, rock climbing, etc. and I come across vandalism and litter all the time. I've had to find more secluded fishing spots too because tourists will gut their fish and leave the guts on the water banks, making it unsafe to fish because the smell brings in bears. True Montanans are some of the hardest working and good natured people. Don't give us a reason to dislike you, and we're typically pretty friendly. Safe travels and I hope you get a chance to come back to explore some more. Make sure you check out Lewis and Clark caverns or tour some of the ghost towns too, there's some pretty interesting history with them.

I am a Native (American and Montanan) and think it is an extraordinary state. I have been to all the states and they all have something beautiful, but Montana is not for the faint of heart. The winters are very quiet so if you're used to a city the quiet of it all can make you a little crazy. People move here all the time and then leave. Our property taxes surprise a lot of people. They think they can come here and live cheaply, but it's not as inexpensive as you think. The other thing is that recreating is not inexpensive either. Buying a snowmobile and a boat and a camper can put a little dent in your budget.
MONTANA IS THE ONLY PLACE THAT CAN GET 75 DOLLARS OUT OF A CHICKEN!! THEY'L SELL YOU A SMALL bag of clucks for 1.89 along with 3 hard boiled eggs for 3.69 lol! No, you had better be rich, if your entertaining any idea of try to make it out there been there 3 times, lost everything!! AND healthcare........well, let me tell you with first hand experience, their is none to speak off! Money MONEY MONEY up front and first!! AND ALOT OF IT!! I got a prescription prescribed for a respitory infection, and when I went to have it filled......279. Dollars!! I'm not kidding! They threw in store coupons at it, and some other mumbo jumbo, and got it down to 125 dollars as I remember! So head my warning about montana americans!! They shure don't mind our family's fighting in wars for it too, but.......they don't want you there after that!!
@@FlyingAceAV8B Very reasonable. Keep in mind that I can only speak for the cabin we own in southwestern Montana, near West Yellowstone. Our cabin is around 1,700 sq. ft (with loft space included) and comes with 19 acres of land. Our annual property tax is just under $900. Now there's no trash pickup service. Still, we don't mind, particularly at that price tag. Be mindful, though, Montana's income taxes are not the most friendly.
I love living in Montana. I moved here in 2003 from Ohio. Every time I go home to visit, I miss the mountains and I can’t wait to get back. There is so much to see here..... Bannack State Park, Big Hole Battlefield, Grant Khors Ranch, Gates of the Mountains, Virginia City, the Capitol is beautiful and you can take a tour of Helena, Mining Museum in Butte and of course taking a ride in the mountains (4x4 is a must). Take a ride through the Big Hole and Beartooth Highway but if it’s close please don’t go beyond the barriers.... it’s closed for a reason, 2 ladies got stuck in a snow storm. Also it will snow in the summer. We had heavy wet snow in June. If you do camp, whatever you take in, you take out.... please don’t litter!!! Enjoy this beautiful state!!!
My dad side of the family is originally from eastern Montana, and smart many of them still live out there farming and ranching and having a great time. I’ve had it up to visit them on a lot of occasions, and have seen a whole lot of Montana. One thing that I would add to this video is don’t forget about Eastern Montana. The towns are smaller, but just because they’re smaller, doesn’t mean that there’s nothing to do. The historical museums in so many of those towns in eastern Montana are really quite surprisingly good!
I just drove back to Indiana from Montana last month. You will definitely go over a hundred miles sometimes with out seeing a gas station and farther then that for some fast food. The thing that amazed me besides the beauty of the state is the job it took to run all that fencing I seen on every road/highway, lol.
FYI the reason they make so many turn-outs is for tourists who can't keep up to the speed limit can turn out and let traffic pass. The rule is if you have more than 4 cars behind you turn out and let the traffic pass. One of the biggest causes of bad accidents is when tourists slow down or hit the brakes hard to see wildlife. Bozeman to Big Sky stretch is the deadliest road in Montana.
@@hanktownsend7911 The last two trips I never went over 40 miles an hour. If God sent me to hell he would make me follow a Californian down the canyon, hitting his brakes on every corner. It is far worse than in the winter dealing with ice and snow.
Yep, we've got bears, mountain lions, wolves, snakes and all sorts of critters that will eat your dog, and cat if it's not after you. The winters are brutal and the wind will blow semi trucks of the roads and freeways in many places. The black ice is practically invisible and even the locals will find themselves in a ditch every now and then. Speaking of locals, everyone owns a gun and we don't take kindly to litterbugs and crooks. DON'T MOVE TO MONTANA

@@billwilliamson9842 our best and worst weather is in January. It can be 25 below zero and 70 above. November can be nice or bitter cold. You can't put your motorcycle away for the winter because you can't predict all the nice riding days that can happen. Every winter we have days we wish we could tac onto our brief spring, summer, fall. One year winter didn't start until Feb. 2nd. 58 degrees in the morning to below zero in the evening and stayed below zero over 30 days.

In all honesty as a Montana native, we are super friendly but a little put off by the increasing population. Come visit and enjoy but we like the nature and the more people that move here the less nature there is. It's an incredible place.

Big thing with Montana to bear in mind, we’re nice people because of our small community. We like it that way, we don’t care if you visit but if you do, CLEAN UP AFTER YOURSELF. The reason why our state stays beautiful is because we take care of our natural surroundings. You can visit, but believe me, you aren’t exactly welcome to move here. People that do move to Montana from out of state, tend to only stay a couple of years for a reason, that being our winters. All the same, we want our community to stay small, and these bigger cities are already big enough. Last thing we need is more people
So hypothetically if my family was planning on moving from California because our family and friends have stopped talking to us because we are Republicans and would rather continue being blue collar instead of a stupid office job. Would we be somewhat accepted if we move by family out there.
@@Cerdo_asqueroso good question, don’t know, don’t care, the past is the past and you can’t change something that happened long before you and I walked this land. Native American culture is vast and rich in Montana, so feel free to come over and ask some of our many tribes how they feel. I sincerely doubt you’ll get the answer you’re looking for, but you might actually learn a thing or two about the people.
In the early 1970s, I lived in the state for a couple of years. I was not welcome, as were most people who weren't from that part of the country. I was regarded as an easterner or southerner. A southerner was the worst to the people I encountered. Some told me off because I came from a slave state. Oh well. When people found out I was from MO, they always said, "Oh. I'm a naideev Muntanan." Talk to them a few minutes and you find out that their families hadn't been in the state very long. I had a second gr grandfather who moved near Alder in the 1880s, but that wasn't good enough. You need to be born in MT. I came away thinking of most people as having northern midwest manners. Definitely not southern. So that's fine. I've never been back and I'm sure I wouldn't be welcome now.

i learned the size of MT when we got to the border, called our loved one and told them we are almost there, and they replied with " you still have 16 more hours to go!" hahahaha

Montana is where Colorado was in the 70's and 80's. It will never stop. In fact, there will be a quickening. As more California idiots move there, thru word of mouth, even more will move in. Until it becomes a suburb of LA. I left Colorado about 20 years ago. The place I grew up only exists in my mind. That quiet rural place is gone. Enjoy now while you can.
I'm currently living in California, and visiting Montana is at the top of my bucket list. Let me just say, as an assurance to the locals there, that I wouldn't dream of doing anything to despoil the beauty of the state....to me, that would amount to sacrilege.
My wife and I drove the length of Montana a couple of years ago from Missoula to Sydney. We found the area around Fort Peck just as interesting as the area around Missoula. The mountains are beautiful and so is the endless prairie. We hope to come back but Covid has delayed our travel plans for a couple of years.
This is a great reply. Fort Peck is really amazing and the history is astonishing. People don't realize the extent of the distance from one end of this state to the other!
We have traveled in Montana a few times. Each time we saw more of this great state. Lots more to see yet. Enjoyed the people we met and the motels we stayed in were very friendly and clean. Looking forward to going back.
I love traveling in Montana, lots of wide open spaces. My dad who also loved to travel, followed the the rule of when your gas tank is 1/2 empty is when you stop for gas and fill it up. On one cross country trip we were in the middle of wyoming and he was beginning to panic because we hadn't seen a gas station for several hours. Then came across one aptly named "Last Chance."
I believe your referring to the stretch between Gillette, Wyoming and Beaulah(120 mi.)Right before the SD border . Last chance for gas for 60 miles(Spearfish)
I lived in Montana most all of my life. You did a good job. You even included the best ice cream ever Wilcoxen's. I think the drive from Red Lodge to Cooke City is one of the best drives in America. Crazy Horse by Marie Sandoz is one of the best books for the history of Indians in this area. She is Indian and got her information by interviewing her grandpa and his friends.
He seemed pretty Bozeman-centric. There are a lot of things within driving distance of Bozeman (us Montanans have taken to calling it “BozeAngeles” because it’s becoming very “California”), but the rest of the state is amazing in different ways. Take time to talk to the locals. Montanans are VERY friendly, although they will respect your privacy if you wish. Above all, don’t try to turn Montana into where you came from. We like it the way it is! Don’t try to “improve” it.
I hear a lot of that sentiment on my visits to Idaho as well, as many people, according to Idahoans, are moving there and "escaping" dysfunctional cities, societies and politics elsewhere. We have that in the border provinces of south-west Canada too, people escaping certain cities like Toronto and Vancouver to move to Alberta's and British Columbia's rural areas. If you agree with our politics, society, and culture, you are welcome, it may make us stronger, if you don't, stay out, cuz you ruined your original city with whatever you believed in there, BC and Alberta are quite conservative away from Metro Vancouver and Edmonton, and we like it the way it is, be assured, Justin Trudeau is mostly an "ugly word" here, although the one thing he is good for is the environment.
This video is excellent. As a Montanan I agree with everything you said. I'd add this: while you will drive a LOT in MT, don't forget to get out of your car! Glacier Park is amazing, and the Going To The Sun Road is a can't miss if you have the opportunity, but most of the best stuff is something you'll only see if you park your car and get onto a trail. Same with Red Lodge, Yellowstone, and any of the many other scenic areas in MT. Oh and don't forget to read the signs. Seriously, those brown information road signs at turnouts are worth stopping at, especially if you're from out of state and don't know the local history. Take a couple minutes to read the sign and stretch your legs, it's well worth it.
I am a native of Montana and have live here my whole life. I moved to the other side of the state and returned to my home town to visit . I noticed a new small business in town and and inquired as to who owns it. I was told the Californians own it. I knew exactly who they meant even though the Californians had moved here 27 years ago they were still known as the Californians. I love my people.

Not any more. Urban sprawl in places like Missoula, Kalispell and Whitefish have ruined the natural beauty. Everyone comes here for their little piece of heaven and don't realized they are taking up natural habitat and driving the wildlife out. In addition Montana has a horrible problem with homelessness and drugs. People cannot find affordable housing and end up living in the woods or the streets. Yeah, 28 years ago it used to be a beautiful place.
I was born and raised in Montana my favorite place is the mountains the biggest thing I can stress to visitors is don't mess with the wildlife ya the animals are beautiful but there more dangerous even the more passive animals are and don't go in the mountains without knowing where you are going there's alot of back roads and its easy to get lost

Great video..I'm an American living in Spain and just bought land near Helena to return home to and build a homestead. I can't wait to leave here. I was in Montana in September to visit property and get to know the area. People were very helpful and friendly.
I really enjoy viewing your fantastic videos while I'm sat here on lockdown in the UK. I visited Montana in September 2019 and loved every beautiful mile of it. I was planning to return in April of this year but this wretched virus put paid to that but it was always be in my mind and despite advancing years I really hope to return one day to see the parts that I didn't have time to visit. I worked in the oil fields in the late 70's and Bozeman was not as big as it is now, there seems to be traffic heavy these days. Miss you Big Sky Country!!

I have always loved driving through MT. up to 2019 I would drive every summer from Whitehorse, Yukon, to ABQ, NM. For the first few times I just did the I15, I90, I25 thing, but the last few years I've always come off I15 at Great Falls and then kind of made it up as I went along, ultimately aiming for I90 at Billings. Love the start in Bozeman...probably the best town I stayed in there...the folks there are soooooo friendly.
Montana is a bucket list state for me. I’ve always been infatuated with the beauty of it, at least from what I’ve seen in pictures. I don’t blame Montana locals for not wanting tourists to come through. Honestly most tourists are messy and do not know how to leave nothing but footprints.
We don't mind tourists at all. Tourists help to boost our state economy. We don't like the disrespectful ones, who come with a 'holier than thou' complex, and do things to damage our great state, such as littering, treating the land however they want, just because it's not "their" home, or those who choose to move here... Let's move on to that one especially. They watch a series like Yellowstone, and then decide to move here and buy land. Remember that you are buying land that used to be public access, and then you kick the locals out, the second you put up your 'private property' sign. If you are a liberal and you moved away from a liberal state, you'd better think twice about a place like Montana. The locals will fight before they allow it to turn purple, or blue. We pay attention to how people vote, and who is elected, when we start seeing an increase in our population. We know how the new people are voting because the voting habits of Montana change as the population grows. We know who the new people are because those not native to our state stick out, like a sore thumb. One of my favorite places to go when I was a kid is the Tobacco Root Mountains. It is beautiful, was wide open, camping spots everywhere, and a perfect place for long distance horseback riding. Now, when you go out there you can't hardly get out of the vehicle and go anywhere, except for one tiny spot because now it's all fenced off with private property signs, and "vote blue" political signs everywhere. It literally angers me! One road out there, that used to be public access to a pass, through the mountains, is now all asphalt, no longer dirt, and the entrance is gated off because somebody bought that entire area, and now declares it private property. You want to see the dark side of Montanans... Keep this crap up. You have to move here because you want to be one with us. You don't dare move here to make it another California; we will NOT let that happen! If you're willing to embrace the Montana way of life, and you believe in conservative values, then Montana is the place for you. If you like the city life and prefer the liberal way of life, then you are not welcome here, unless you are a guest, but you better be respectful, and that includes respecting our way of life. God, guns, country, and respect... that's the Montana way.
@@OneAngrySoldier2 There are plenty of what you would consider "liberals / progressives" and Blue voters in Montana too. Nothing is that black and white even if historically Montana might be considered a classic Red state. Not everybody is religious either, I would say the best advice is just to mind your own business, no matter who you vote for.

I've travelled to Montana twice now from the UK, stayed in Billings and in Bozeman, only missed out on Glacier because of the weather. And I'll be back again one day, best state in the US in my opinion. Oh, and as a Cornishman who's ancestor settled in Butte...Nancy (in Butte) does the best Cornish Pasty in the USA.
Im an african woman living in Europe but I've always loved montana probably from documentaries and movies idk but I would love love love to visit there one day people of my family telling me I'm crazy because it's best to visit other places in the USA I did philadelphia Memphis Washington New jersey last month but next year I wanna go to montana! Checking this video and some comments I'm like ummmm I really hope it's not one of those city in the states where being black is a problem (that's the fear I had before visiting the USA) they said its bad there for blacks but I'm sure not everyone is bad thanks for this nice video I'm still looking foward to go there next year

Oh and there isn't much diversity as of 2024, But I agree that giving it a chance is worth it. My dad, as a gay man here, worked at many of the schools teaching k-8 and caught so much sh*t just for that fact, But interacting with the students that he's had, who are my peers, there are much more open minded people here than one might expect.
My niece, nephew and I loved Montana! I had never heard anything much about Bozeman, and we all enjoyed it so much. The Museum of the Rockies is fascinating, and the beauty of the whole state is mesmerizing. 10/10 would visit again!
Montanan here, I highly recommend going to the C.M. Russell museum here in great falls! And the license plate games is best played in this state, no doubt! If you and your family are making your way to Idaho, I strongly recommend making a pit stop in great falls, we got dams, lots of dams! I do have to correct you on the liquor store thing though, while a large portion of hard booze is sold in state liquor stores we do sell liquor in casinos!
@@BillGreenAZ depends on what you want to do. Would not go to Billings. It sucks. Missoula, Great Falls, and Bozeman are all nice. In my opinion, visiting the entire state is just not possible. You’ll be on the road the whole time, and not enjoying what the state really has to offer. If you let me know what you want to visit, I can offer some tips. If you want the true Montana experience, I would stay in the Central region of the state (great falls, fort Benton, Lewistown, white sulpher springs, Augusta, Choteau, belt, and neihart) I would use great falls as a base camp and do day trips out. From great falls, you can do GNP, the Rocky Mountain front, as well as the island mountain ranges(little belts, highwoods, Crazies, bears paw, sweetgrass). Great Falls(the city) has lots to offer, a nice, un-pretentious downtown, lots of local businesses and restaurants, an amazing bike trail system along the Missouri River (~20 miles paved, 40 or 60 miles of single track trail) and many art/history museums. In Bozeman and Missoula, you’ll pay an arm and a leg for hotels, but Great falls is still relatively inexpensive.

My grandma picked up some bronze statues from there in the 1970’s. They were always so special to me! Unfortunately we had to sell them when she passed.
If the liquor store is closed, go to the nearest bar. They sell bottles of liquor. Used to be a trip was measured by how many 6 packs it took. That is why we have so many white crosses on our roads.😢😢
I’m an indigenous person, we were traveling in Montana , we stopped at a small town called Choteau or something of the sort to buy gas. People we’re looking and behaving strangely, as we were paying for the gas. The cashier looked at us and said now get out of our town and don’t come back or else. Others joined in , of course we left in a hurry. Be careful where you decide to stop especially if you’re a minority, or if you’re indigenous.
I’m from Missoula (a city in western MT) and I’m so sorry to hear this and especially shocked because there are lots of indigenous people in Choteau and all across Montana. I never would expect this kind of behavior

Early 1990's my college dorm room was directly across the street from the Pickle Barrel in Bozeman. Would hit it up all the time. Yes, don't skip out on a visit. You'll love the food.

Great high points to hit! I would add don't forget the ghost towns! Hit both Virginia City and Bannack for a touristy vs non-touristy experience. Also, don't forget the parks and monuments that aren't Yellowstone or Glacier. You'll more likely see wildlife at the National Bison Range than YNP, Big Hole National Battlefield is a sad but important part of our history, same with the Little Bighorn Battlefield Monument. In the summer most towns here have festivals and country fairs. Like SLAM in Bozeman, the Polson Flathead Cherry Festival, or the Swan Lake Huckleberry Festival.

Don't forget the historic Uptown Butte, Montana area and called.., "The Richest Hill on Earth" ! ! It's history re-visited.. With Glacier National Park and Yellowstone National Park, and a short drive to Jackson Hole, Wyoming and "The Grand Tetons National Park".., you can't go wrong... * World Class (Fly-Fishing) for "Rainbow Trout" and "Brown Trout" in Montana.., is unbelievable and the best in the United States, including World Class snow skiing in Montana ! ! * It's like the "Old Wild West" in Montana with many small inviting towns' and Saloons' and friendly people.. Montana is like an adventure into the "Old Wild West".. * It is worth a visit and a beautiful adventure, all rolled into one.. The working cattle ranches' are huge and there are more cattle and horses, than people.. Snow-capped mountains, (Northern Rocky Mountains) and the (Continental Divide), beautiful wild flowers', lakes', rivers', streams' and creeks are beautiful and unbelievable, and (NO) car traffic.. Laughed out loud about the gas! Oh, yeah. That is a problem. Love the Pickle Barrel as well. Also, there is another museum in Bozeman that was really really really good. It is the American Computer and Robotics Museum. It is very small, but every inch is packed with technological innovations for the past 4,000 years.
Also if you can, try to attend a Mennoite or Hutterite pavillion. Had some of the best chicken and mashed potatoes along with home made ice cream and rhubarb pie. Cool experience!
Don't ask the locals where to pick huckleberries. We will LIE about where to pick, cause you ruin the huckleberry bushes & it takes years for them to produce good berries again for years to come. 😡😡😡 Just go buy some instead PLEASE! Just being honest!!! Oh yeah stop & get the rules of our state & for national parks don't throw your banana peels or Apple cores on the trails you pack it in you pack it out & that means EVERYTHING. Took me a whole 24 hours to drive through Montana I think I stopped at 2 hotels to sleep. But damn I loved it and the locals appreciated how much I was loving it.
Just a couple more, DO visit here, DO enjoy yourself, DO be safe, DO spend your money here. DON'T drive like an idiot, DON'T be impatient and rude, and most of all DON'T move here.

As a 5th generation Montanan and local native in Missoula, it’s definitely worth noting that the influx in people has sold out a lot of people who have called this place home. I’m personally lucky that I have dodged expensive rental prices by signing contracts with private landlords year after year. Not everyone has that luxury and this goes for most areas in Western/Southwestern Montana. Cookie cutter apartments are basically the only option left for younger people moving here and they’re asking an arm and a leg for housing that is built in less than a year and therefore has issues. The Bitterroot from Lolo to Hamilton is clogged like an artery and Missoula is struggling with the “traffic diet” plan they have inhibited over 10 years ago. There isn’t the job infrastructure that’s supposed to support the amount of people who are coming in (it astonishes me how much the media has glorified Montana in the last three years alone) and the people who can work from home oftentimes outbid the asking price and further destroy the already tough housing market. If you want mountains and wildlife and diverse history, you can go to Wyoming and Idaho too. We aren’t recommending people to move here for a reason.
Perfect video A+ job We drove through to get to Olympic and ya think Montana is my favorite state now. Not once did I feel unsafe. All the history etc. it didn’t seem to long to drive through (i90 whole way) because of the absolute beauty.

Two things to add are to go to the Staggering Ox for the most unique sandwiches I've still ever seen, and cell phone service isn't a problem if you have Verizon unless you are way out off the interstate.

I was born and raised in MT, and you could spend years here and still not see everything. Us Montanans really don't like tourists because there is so much disrespect for the land, it's really frustrating. I spend a ton of time in the outdoors hiking, camping, kayaking, rock climbing, etc. and I come across vandalism and litter all the time. I've had to find more secluded fishing spots too because tourists will gut their fish and leave the guts on the water banks, making it unsafe to fish because the smell brings in bears. True Montanans are some of the hardest working and good natured people. Don't give us a reason to dislike you, and we're typically pretty friendly. Safe travels and I hope you get a chance to come back to explore some more. Make sure you check out Lewis and Clark caverns or tour some of the ghost towns too, there's some pretty interesting history with them.

I am a Native (American and Montanan) and think it is an extraordinary state. I have been to all the states and they all have something beautiful, but Montana is not for the faint of heart. The winters are very quiet so if you're used to a city the quiet of it all can make you a little crazy. People move here all the time and then leave. Our property taxes surprise a lot of people. They think they can come here and live cheaply, but it's not as inexpensive as you think. The other thing is that recreating is not inexpensive either. Buying a snowmobile and a boat and a camper can put a little dent in your budget.
MONTANA IS THE ONLY PLACE THAT CAN GET 75 DOLLARS OUT OF A CHICKEN!! THEY'L SELL YOU A SMALL bag of clucks for 1.89 along with 3 hard boiled eggs for 3.69 lol! No, you had better be rich, if your entertaining any idea of try to make it out there been there 3 times, lost everything!! AND healthcare........well, let me tell you with first hand experience, their is none to speak off! Money MONEY MONEY up front and first!! AND ALOT OF IT!! I got a prescription prescribed for a respitory infection, and when I went to have it filled......279. Dollars!! I'm not kidding! They threw in store coupons at it, and some other mumbo jumbo, and got it down to 125 dollars as I remember! So head my warning about montana americans!! They shure don't mind our family's fighting in wars for it too, but.......they don't want you there after that!!

@@FlyingAceAV8B Very reasonable. Keep in mind that I can only speak for the cabin we own in southwestern Montana, near West Yellowstone. Our cabin is around 1,700 sq. ft (with loft space included) and comes with 19 acres of land. Our annual property tax is just under $900. Now there's no trash pickup service. Still, we don't mind, particularly at that price tag.
Be mindful, though, Montana's income taxes are not the most friendly.
I love living in Montana. I moved here in 2003 from Ohio. Every time I go home to visit, I miss the mountains and I can’t wait to get back. There is so much to see here..... Bannack State Park, Big Hole Battlefield, Grant Khors Ranch, Gates of the Mountains, Virginia City, the Capitol is beautiful and you can take a tour of Helena, Mining Museum in Butte and of course taking a ride in the mountains (4x4 is a must). Take a ride through the Big Hole and Beartooth Highway but if it’s close please don’t go beyond the barriers.... it’s closed for a reason, 2 ladies got stuck in a snow storm. Also it will snow in the summer. We had heavy wet snow in June. If you do camp, whatever you take in, you take out.... please don’t litter!!! Enjoy this beautiful state!!!

My dad side of the family is originally from eastern Montana, and smart many of them still live out there farming and ranching and having a great time. I’ve had it up to visit them on a lot of occasions, and have seen a whole lot of Montana. One thing that I would add to this video is don’t forget about Eastern Montana. The towns are smaller, but just because they’re smaller, doesn’t mean that there’s nothing to do. The historical museums in so many of those towns in eastern Montana are really quite surprisingly good!
You sure did hit that nail on the head when it came to bypassing the eastern end of the state.
I just drove back to Indiana from Montana last month. You will definitely go over a hundred miles sometimes with out seeing a gas station and farther then that for some fast food. The thing that amazed me besides the beauty of the state is the job it took to run all that fencing I seen on every road/highway, lol.
FYI the reason they make so many turn-outs is for tourists who can't keep up to the speed limit can turn out and let traffic pass. The rule is if you have more than 4 cars behind you turn out and let the traffic pass. One of the biggest causes of bad accidents is when tourists slow down or hit the brakes hard to see wildlife. Bozeman to Big Sky stretch is the deadliest road in Montana.
Highway 93 is very deadly as well.

Yep, we've got bears, mountain lions, wolves, snakes and all sorts of critters that will eat your dog, and cat if it's not after you. The winters are brutal and the wind will blow semi trucks of the roads and freeways in many places. The black ice is practically invisible and even the locals will find themselves in a ditch every now and then. Speaking of locals, everyone owns a gun and we don't take kindly to litterbugs and crooks. DON'T MOVE TO MONTANA

@@billwilliamson9842 our best and worst weather is in January. It can be 25 below zero and 70 above. November can be nice or bitter cold. You can't put your motorcycle away for the winter because you can't predict all the nice riding days that can happen. Every winter we have days we wish we could tac onto our brief spring, summer, fall. One year winter didn't start until Feb. 2nd. 58 degrees in the morning to below zero in the evening and stayed below zero over 30 days.

In all honesty as a Montana native, we are super friendly but a little put off by the increasing population. Come visit and enjoy but we like the nature and the more people that move here the less nature there is. It's an incredible place.

Big thing with Montana to bear in mind, we’re nice people because of our small community. We like it that way, we don’t care if you visit but if you do, CLEAN UP AFTER YOURSELF. The reason why our state stays beautiful is because we take care of our natural surroundings. You can visit, but believe me, you aren’t exactly welcome to move here. People that do move to Montana from out of state, tend to only stay a couple of years for a reason, that being our winters. All the same, we want our community to stay small, and these bigger cities are already big enough. Last thing we need is more people
So hypothetically if my family was planning on moving from California because our family and friends have stopped talking to us because we are Republicans and would rather continue being blue collar instead of a stupid office job. Would we be somewhat accepted if we move by family out there.

@@Cerdo_asqueroso good question, don’t know, don’t care, the past is the past and you can’t change something that happened long before you and I walked this land. Native American culture is vast and rich in Montana, so feel free to come over and ask some of our many tribes how they feel. I sincerely doubt you’ll get the answer you’re looking for, but you might actually learn a thing or two about the people.
In the early 1970s, I lived in the state for a couple of years. I was not welcome, as were most people who weren't from that part of the country. I was regarded as an easterner or southerner. A southerner was the worst to the people I encountered. Some told me off because I came from a slave state. Oh well.
When people found out I was from MO, they always said, "Oh. I'm a naideev Muntanan." Talk to them a few minutes and you find out that their families hadn't been in the state very long. I had a second gr grandfather who moved near Alder in the 1880s, but that wasn't good enough. You need to be born in MT. I came away thinking of most people as having northern midwest manners. Definitely not southern.
So that's fine. I've never been back and I'm sure I wouldn't be welcome now.

My wife and I drove the length of Montana a couple of years ago from Missoula to Sydney. We found the area around Fort Peck just as interesting as the area around Missoula. The mountains are beautiful and so is the endless prairie. We hope to come back but Covid has delayed our travel plans for a couple of years.

I love traveling in Montana, lots of wide open spaces. My dad who also loved to travel, followed the the rule of when your gas tank is 1/2 empty is when you stop for gas and fill it up. On one cross country trip we were in the middle of wyoming and he was beginning to panic because we hadn't seen a gas station for several hours. Then came across one aptly named "Last Chance."
I believe your referring to the stretch between Gillette, Wyoming and Beaulah(120 mi.)Right before the SD border . Last chance for gas for 60 miles(Spearfish)
It’s my experience too in 1978 .
I lived in Montana most all of my life. You did a good job. You even included the best ice cream ever Wilcoxen's. I think the drive from Red Lodge to Cooke City is one of the best drives in America. Crazy Horse by Marie Sandoz is one of the best books for the history of Indians in this area. She is Indian and got her information by interviewing her grandpa and his friends.

There are a lot of things within driving distance of Bozeman (us Montanans have taken to calling it “BozeAngeles” because it’s becoming very “California”), but the rest of the state is amazing in different ways. Take time to talk to the locals. Montanans are VERY friendly, although they will respect your privacy if you wish. Above all, don’t try to turn Montana into where you came from. We like it the way it is! Don’t try to “improve” it.
I hear a lot of that sentiment on my visits to Idaho as well, as many people, according to Idahoans, are moving there and "escaping" dysfunctional cities, societies and politics elsewhere. We have that in the border provinces of south-west Canada too, people escaping certain cities like Toronto and Vancouver to move to Alberta's and British Columbia's rural areas. If you agree with our politics, society, and culture, you are welcome, it may make us stronger, if you don't, stay out, cuz you ruined your original city with whatever you believed in there, BC and Alberta are quite conservative away from Metro Vancouver and Edmonton, and we like it the way it is, be assured, Justin Trudeau is mostly an "ugly word" here, although the one thing he is good for is the environment.

This video is excellent. As a Montanan I agree with everything you said. I'd add this: while you will drive a LOT in MT, don't forget to get out of your car! Glacier Park is amazing, and the Going To The Sun Road is a can't miss if you have the opportunity, but most of the best stuff is something you'll only see if you park your car and get onto a trail. Same with Red Lodge, Yellowstone, and any of the many other scenic areas in MT.
Oh and don't forget to read the signs. Seriously, those brown information road signs at turnouts are worth stopping at, especially if you're from out of state and don't know the local history. Take a couple minutes to read the sign and stretch your legs, it's well worth it.

I noticed a new small business in town and and inquired as to who owns it. I was told the Californians own it. I knew exactly who they meant even though the Californians had moved here 27 years ago they were still known as the Californians. I love my people.

Not any more. Urban sprawl in places like Missoula, Kalispell and Whitefish have ruined the natural beauty. Everyone comes here for their little piece of heaven and don't realized they are taking up natural habitat and driving the wildlife out. In addition Montana has a horrible problem with homelessness and drugs. People cannot find affordable housing and end up living in the woods or the streets. Yeah, 28 years ago it used to be a beautiful place.

If you don’t love eastern Montana and you’re from Montana than you’re not a Montanan. Also if you’re a Californian looking to move to Montana. Move to bozeman or Missoula you will fit in perfect

I have always loved driving through MT. up to 2019 I would drive every summer from Whitehorse, Yukon, to ABQ, NM. For the first few times I just did the I15, I90, I25 thing, but the last few years I've always come off I15 at Great Falls and then kind of made it up as I went along, ultimately aiming for I90 at Billings. Love the start in Bozeman...probably the best town I stayed in there...the folks there are soooooo friendly.
Montana is a bucket list state for me. I’ve always been infatuated with the beauty of it, at least from what I’ve seen in pictures.
I don’t blame Montana locals for not wanting tourists to come through. Honestly most tourists are messy and do not know how to leave nothing but footprints.
My advice is to come to Missoula, it's by far the safest place to visit here, and has alot to do.
We don't mind tourists at all. Tourists help to boost our state economy. We don't like the disrespectful ones, who come with a 'holier than thou' complex, and do things to damage our great state, such as littering, treating the land however they want, just because it's not "their" home, or those who choose to move here... Let's move on to that one especially.
They watch a series like Yellowstone, and then decide to move here and buy land. Remember that you are buying land that used to be public access, and then you kick the locals out, the second you put up your 'private property' sign. If you are a liberal and you moved away from a liberal state, you'd better think twice about a place like Montana. The locals will fight before they allow it to turn purple, or blue. We pay attention to how people vote, and who is elected, when we start seeing an increase in our population. We know how the new people are voting because the voting habits of Montana change as the population grows. We know who the new people are because those not native to our state stick out, like a sore thumb.
One of my favorite places to go when I was a kid is the Tobacco Root Mountains. It is beautiful, was wide open, camping spots everywhere, and a perfect place for long distance horseback riding. Now, when you go out there you can't hardly get out of the vehicle and go anywhere, except for one tiny spot because now it's all fenced off with private property signs, and "vote blue" political signs everywhere. It literally angers me! One road out there, that used to be public access to a pass, through the mountains, is now all asphalt, no longer dirt, and the entrance is gated off because somebody bought that entire area, and now declares it private property. You want to see the dark side of Montanans... Keep this crap up.
You have to move here because you want to be one with us. You don't dare move here to make it another California; we will NOT let that happen!
If you're willing to embrace the Montana way of life, and you believe in conservative values, then Montana is the place for you. If you like the city life and prefer the liberal way of life, then you are not welcome here, unless you are a guest, but you better be respectful, and that includes respecting our way of life. God, guns, country, and respect... that's the Montana way.

@@OneAngrySoldier2 There are plenty of what you would consider "liberals / progressives" and Blue voters in Montana too. Nothing is that black and white even if historically Montana might be considered a classic Red state.
Not everybody is religious either, I would say the best advice is just to mind your own business, no matter who you vote for.

I've travelled to Montana twice now from the UK, stayed in Billings and in Bozeman, only missed out on Glacier because of the weather. And I'll be back again one day, best state in the US in my opinion. Oh, and as a Cornishman who's ancestor settled in Butte...Nancy (in Butte) does the best Cornish Pasty in the USA.
Im an african woman living in Europe but I've always loved montana probably from documentaries and movies idk but I would love love love to visit there one day people of my family telling me I'm crazy because it's best to visit other places in the USA I did philadelphia Memphis Washington New jersey last month but next year I wanna go to montana! Checking this video and some comments I'm like ummmm I really hope it's not one of those city in the states where being black is a problem (that's the fear I had before visiting the USA) they said its bad there for blacks but I'm sure not everyone is bad thanks for this nice video I'm still looking foward to go there next year

Replying two years late, but if you haven't yet, please do come check it out! I grew up here near GNP, and as much as i want to leave and explore the world, I'll never forget montana
Oh and there isn't much diversity as of 2024, But I agree that giving it a chance is worth it. My dad, as a gay man here, worked at many of the schools teaching k-8 and caught so much sh*t just for that fact, But interacting with the students that he's had, who are my peers, there are much more open minded people here than one might expect.
My niece, nephew and I loved Montana! I had never heard anything much about Bozeman, and we all enjoyed it so much. The Museum of the Rockies is fascinating, and the beauty of the whole state is mesmerizing. 10/10 would visit again!

Montanan here, I highly recommend going to the C.M. Russell museum here in great falls! And the license plate games is best played in this state, no doubt! If you and your family are making your way to Idaho, I strongly recommend making a pit stop in great falls, we got dams, lots of dams!
I do have to correct you on the liquor store thing though, while a large portion of hard booze is sold in state liquor stores we do sell liquor in casinos!

@@BillGreenAZ depends on what you want to do. Would not go to Billings. It sucks. Missoula, Great Falls, and Bozeman are all nice. In my opinion, visiting the entire state is just not possible. You’ll be on the road the whole time, and not enjoying what the state really has to offer. If you let me know what you want to visit, I can offer some tips. If you want the true Montana experience, I would stay in the Central region of the state (great falls, fort Benton, Lewistown, white sulpher springs, Augusta, Choteau, belt, and neihart) I would use great falls as a base camp and do day trips out. From great falls, you can do GNP, the Rocky Mountain front, as well as the island mountain ranges(little belts, highwoods, Crazies, bears paw, sweetgrass). Great Falls(the city) has lots to offer, a nice, un-pretentious downtown, lots of local businesses and restaurants, an amazing bike trail system along the Missouri River (~20 miles paved, 40 or 60 miles of single track trail) and many art/history museums. In Bozeman and Missoula, you’ll pay an arm and a leg for hotels, but Great falls is still relatively inexpensive.

I’m an indigenous person, we were traveling in Montana , we stopped at a small town called Choteau or something of the sort to buy gas. People we’re looking and behaving strangely, as we were paying for the gas. The cashier looked at us and said now get out of our town and don’t come back or else. Others joined in , of course we left in a hurry. Be careful where you decide to stop especially if you’re a minority, or if you’re indigenous.

Great high points to hit! I would add don't forget the ghost towns! Hit both Virginia City and Bannack for a touristy vs non-touristy experience. Also, don't forget the parks and monuments that aren't Yellowstone or Glacier. You'll more likely see wildlife at the National Bison Range than YNP, Big Hole National Battlefield is a sad but important part of our history, same with the Little Bighorn Battlefield Monument. In the summer most towns here have festivals and country fairs. Like SLAM in Bozeman, the Polson Flathead Cherry Festival, or the Swan Lake Huckleberry Festival.

With Glacier National Park and Yellowstone National Park, and a short drive to Jackson Hole, Wyoming and "The Grand Tetons National Park".., you can't go wrong... * World Class (Fly-Fishing) for "Rainbow Trout" and "Brown Trout" in Montana.., is unbelievable and the best in the United States, including World Class snow skiing in Montana ! ! * It's like the "Old Wild West" in Montana with many small inviting towns' and Saloons' and friendly people.. Montana is like an adventure into the "Old Wild West".. * It is worth a visit and a beautiful adventure, all rolled into one.. The working cattle ranches' are huge and there are more cattle and horses, than people.. Snow-capped mountains, (Northern Rocky Mountains) and the (Continental Divide), beautiful wild flowers', lakes', rivers', streams' and creeks are beautiful and unbelievable, and (NO) car traffic.. Watch out for "Wildlife".., they are everywhere.. * Small Montana towns'.., are spaced about 25 to 35 miles apart and all were "Wells Fargo" stage stops'.. You will (love) Montana ! ! My biggest tip for montana is come here, visit, spend money, then go back to wherever you came from.
Laughed out loud about the gas! Oh, yeah. That is a problem. Love the Pickle Barrel as well. Also, there is another museum in Bozeman that was really really really good. It is the American Computer and Robotics Museum. It is very small, but every inch is packed with technological innovations for the past 4,000 years.

Also if you can, try to attend a Mennoite or Hutterite pavillion. Had some of the best chicken and mashed potatoes along with home made ice cream and rhubarb pie. Cool experience!

Took me a whole 24 hours to drive through Montana I think I stopped at 2 hotels to sleep. But damn I loved it and the locals appreciated how much I was loving it.
It takes 15 hours to drive across MT; less before we had posted speed limits.

As a 5th generation Montanan and local native in Missoula, it’s definitely worth noting that the influx in people has sold out a lot of people who have called this place home. I’m personally lucky that I have dodged expensive rental prices by signing contracts with private landlords year after year. Not everyone has that luxury and this goes for most areas in Western/Southwestern Montana. Cookie cutter apartments are basically the only option left for younger people moving here and they’re asking an arm and a leg for housing that is built in less than a year and therefore has issues. The Bitterroot from Lolo to Hamilton is clogged like an artery and Missoula is struggling with the “traffic diet” plan they have inhibited over 10 years ago. There isn’t the job infrastructure that’s supposed to support the amount of people who are coming in (it astonishes me how much the media has glorified Montana in the last three years alone) and the people who can work from home oftentimes outbid the asking price and further destroy the already tough housing market. If you want mountains and wildlife and diverse history, you can go to Wyoming and Idaho too. We aren’t recommending people to move here for a reason.
Don't worry - all it takes is a few really bad Montana winters and all the Californians will leave

We drove through to get to Olympic and ya think Montana is my favorite state now. Not once did I feel unsafe. All the history etc. it didn’t seem to long to drive through (i90 whole way) because of the absolute beauty.

Lived in MT for 12 years. Very cool video, if I were to make one it would have been really boring lol. Two things to add are to go to the Staggering Ox for the most unique sandwiches I've still ever seen, and cell phone service isn't a problem if you have Verizon unless you are way out off the interstate.
