- On holiday in Northumberland, 16-year-old Evan was caught in a rip current that dragged him out into the freezing North Sea. As he fought to stay afloat, his dad and friends watched helplessly from the shore, fearing they might be watching him drown.

Stay calm and lie on your back and keep your arms in the water .I was a professional lifeguard for 25 years and I have saved hundreds of lives over the years and also lost a few.ALWAYS RESPECT WATER AND NEVER SWIM WHEN DRUNK.

@@Mod-rw9cw I'm a surfer and river guide. Never heard of keeping arms in cold water 🤔 That could actually make the hypothermia onslaught quicker. If you can keep any limbs out the water safely, you should.
Charlie Dunn you try treading water with your arms out and see how much it drains your energy then try with arms in and feel the difference.
@@Mod-rw9cw Treading water? He's not treading water he is lying on his back. If lying on the back and feeling the cold you should remove hands from the water. That is where the heat will be lost, the extremities.

Wear a life jacket even if you can swim. Waves are unpredictable.

im a lifeguard and while this was a great video you should never give anyone a drink after a potential hypothermia rescue, reason being the organs dont function properly due to the body being in shock, likely hood is they will either puke up the drink within minutes leading to further shock increasing the chance of a heart failure or b the stomach will generate ulsters due to the amount of salt water being swallowed, also there is most likely water still in their lungs which can lead to Pneumonia.
My heart hesitates with large bodies of water. I am overjoyed that these young people are alive. Hallelujah!

Exact thing happened to me when I was younger, I was apparently 2 minutes away from dying. I’ve been terrified of learning to swim ever since and at 18 I still don’t know how to swim.

I thought I was gonna drown in Santa Cruze.... We weren't supposed to be in the water cause the waves were so big but we went in anyway... The waves were so big I kept getting pulled underwater... I new I had to stay calm and strong ...never again

Anyone that is experienced with the ocean will know to swim parallel to the beach. These boys should have been prepared, especially if they knew their beach have rip currents
