A tragic day at Bondi. In line with our message of surf safety we urge you (and your friends and family) to learn about rips, how to spot them and how to get out of them. If you'd like to learn more about rips, Lifeguard Jethro has some tips here: th-cam.com/video/vDknhf1s-FA/w-d-xo.html

Its not that much of a waste actually, just cause you won't ever see an ocean doesn't mean swimming is useless especially since there are lakes, rivers and man made bodies of water people can fall into. Imagine you are driving, lose control, survive the impact but die cause after your car crashed in the river you drown. Kind of a waste.
And besides safety it also can provide healthy recreational facilities or just fun. Obviously I don't agree there should be a universal standard, but maybe that some things or places like holiday hotels may have the right to refuse you entry if you can't show proficiency in swimming. It’s good especially with young kids who’s family have gone missing in the water if u give them COR it will at least make the family know that you tried and have done everything you can. Even knowing there’s no hope it’s just to reassure people that you tried and not just gave up even though you know there is no hope.

I agree. I'm a very curious person and I really like medical stuff and rescues even if it's disturbing, sad, gory, etc.. However I understand not only is it important to stay way back (like at least five car lengths maybe?) but to also keep quiet. These people are trying to save someone's life and go with specific procedures while also staying calm. If you're curious and want to stand by to see what happens, I feel like that's fine but give LOTS of space and be absolutely quiet.
When you see a rescue, the family of the victim is quiet possibly going to lose someone close to them, it's not entertainment.

This is the anniversary of my little brother drowning, July 19th. He was in a small lake at a roped off beach. There were 2 lifeguards on duty but they were sitting under a tree because it was hot and they wanted some shade. I've wondered many times through the years how messed up they had to have been after losing a 7 year old in shallow water. My brother went to the beach with the kid across the street and his mom. She told my mom she'd watch the boys. I wondered how she's felt all these years later? I know they moved not too long after Mark died maybe a year later, if that. I'm 62 now and still miss my baby brother.

As a former pool guard I have the ultimate respect for these guys... In 3 years of guarding I had 5 saves, and can remember almost everything about them. I doubt I will ever forget... and 4 of those were people who were helped to the side of the pool with no ill effects. 1 was an asthma attack in the water, she sucked in quite a bit of water struggling to breathe and we had to call an ambulance. But they in no way compare to fighting with tidal forces on an ocean beach, with constantly changing conditions and tens of thousands of people. And for them to have a safety record as high as it sounds is absolutely amazing, And the situation in this video is heartbreaking, because 2 guards knew they saw him having issues, but were unable to find him in the water. I mean that's the stuff of nightmares for a lifeguard.

With an average of thousands to tens of thousands of beach goers each day, the fact that there is only an official drowning once every few years is astounding. As Australians, we learn at an early age to respect the water, stay between the flags, don't go into the water if we can't swim, watch for rips, etc. But for those who come from other countries, especially landlocked countries, I understand how the attraction of a beach like Bondi can be too much. My heart goes out to the lifeguards who searched for this man and in particular those who found him. A huge healing hug to the man's family who made the heartbreaking decision to show how their loved one left this world. I am a strong swimmer, with many water skills/knowledge, but, still, I am very cautious about going into any body of water I'm not familiar with. I recently , on my way to have a surf, came across some tourists, a mum and two young kids about to enter into a super rocky and steep drop part of the beach. I suggested to them that farther down would be a better entry point. They thanked me and I informed her of the current being strong today. The mum said to me, "oh, they've taken swimming lessons." My thought to that was, just because you can navigate the pool and the water in your area doesn't mean they'll be able to navigate the ocean here. It is that kind of arrogant attitude or cluelessness that often gets people into trouble. Most of my friends, who are lifeguards, deal with this kind of attitude everyday. Most of them are tourists.

Alot of tourists do not realise how dangerous the beaches are here as they would be comparing them to either beaches they been to on other trips or from their home country. It is easy for us to say as Aussies 'why didn't they learn to swim?' Or 'how come they didn't know it was dangerous?' He was probably exhausted from trying to swim against the rip tide and couldn't keep his head above water and just went under. It's bad enough swimming against the rip tide like the lifeguards do when they're well trained and strong swimmers. What a terrible tragedy.

This is SO important for people to understand, to not take the Ocean, or any body of water as a grain of salt.
In my youth, I swam so well, but Ocean's, and Rivers, and lakes are SO different!
I am from the USA, yet I do not live anywhere near an Ocean. I'm not doing well health wise, and it is something I want to see before its my time.
I had a friend who drowned in a river years ago. He was a good person who should have lived a very long and happy life. It still hurts to this day, and we were so much younger then....
Thank you for what you do!!

These lifeguards are amazingly good at what they do, sadly I witnessed two drownings in Greece whilst on holidays it was early morning and unfortunately there was no lifeguards or any resuscitation and a while before an ambulance came on the scene in these situations be in treacherous sea waters there should be expert lifeguards on a daily watch not just a red flag. Very upsetting to witness two people dying between 10 feet of each other and nothing you can do except stand there in shock

Huge shoutout to the producers for keeping this moment as respectful for the victim’s family as possible. Not only did they not show the victim’s body at all, but they even left out the music to honor that moment of silence. Also huge shoutout to the lifeguards for spending all that time looking for the victim when it could’ve been just a false alarm

And this clip is from 14 years ago (2007). So to be doing that kind of stuff back then and also having free anonymous counselling is wayyyy ahead of its time.

I'm glad that Hopps decided to do that, it's really encouraging to see a boss understand his employees' need so well. It may be because Hopps is more than a paper pusher boss.

They should totally get some drones to monitor the water from above. Since they mention they cant see above the waves when in the water. There has to be some kind of system out there using drones for purposes like these.

My heart goes out to his family - a week into their new life, they go to the beach to celebrate his birthday and this happens. Amazingly brave of them to allow this video to be made to warn others of the dangers.

Love the raw footage besides the narrator and voice overs. Other shows would add dramatic music. Much respect
