    One tip, when someone is drowning you want to keep an eye on them at all time, that means you can't jump and put your head underwater like he did because its then easier to lose seight of the victim and then take more time to respond. Also, when you get to a drowning person you want to have a floating objet with you. Otherwise you could drown with them, because a person in distress will take the first thing that comes their way to help themselves. If it's you, they could push you underwater to keep their head above water. Meaning you always have to push an objet to them before approching. And sometimes the person could be heavy, so the floating object is also there to help you keeping them and yourself safe.

      EXACTLY what I thought and also, make sure to get the person to not be looking at the water if they are drowning, get them away from it because otherwise they will remember water as something very traumatizing

      As a lifeguard in Norway, I can confirm what you say. It is actually very important to think about your own safety before you save others, otherwise you can end up with 2 people in danger.

    I served as a lifeguard for two years. At a pool and a lake. Murky water training is a whole world different than pool training. For example, lake certificate you must complete a successful stride entry. That is jumping into the water without your head submerging. That way if the victim goes under you have a rough idea of where they are under the water. If a victim is unable to be retrieved you have to make a line in the deep lake water with all the lifeguards and continuously dive and sweep the water for hours! I was Boy Scouts of America Certified which was an identical course to the Red Cross training. Feel free to ask any questions regarding my experience, I would be delighted to inform!

      Hey mate.
      Since I don't like swimming in the lake, it creeps me out a bit, I was wondering how hard it is to have someone stay afloat. In the sea once u get a guy from under his armpits it's quite easy to keep them afloat, although not easy to take them to shore.
      I wanna take the course in a few months.

    • @deannas2313
      @deannas2313 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Querens @Sandeep Sengupta First off I've been taught that you have to have a floating device with you (as a lifeguard have a flutter board or a noodle). In a situation, like you asked, as the lifeguard nears the person who is thrashing, they go into a position called Reverse-and-ready (feet first toward the victim). This preps the lifeguard to push the floating device toward the person who is panicking. The reverse-and-ready position also helps to push the victim away if needed. This is a basic overview.

    The one thing I was taught in Scotland is that is someone is drowning and panicking they will grab you and push you under the water. So you use a piece of clothing to tow them. This happened last year in Loch Lommond where the people that tried to help ended up drowning too. Remember if people are drowning not to let them drown you too. Be safe around water and know how to save lives 🙏

      it's kinda poetic. When instinct takes over, we don't recognize that someone is saving us. All we know is that there's suddenly an object we can climb on to get air. And we'll drown them to breathe it for a moment longer. 😬

    I met a Middle Eastern Mum who was fully covered and brought her young son to the pool to swim. He was playing by himself in the adult pool, and almost drowned. I was there with my young son and husband in the pool.
    I saw the kid drowning in the pool at the shallower side of the pool. So I swam towards him, and dragged him out of the water. His mum came afterwards checking if he's fine. It's not a pleasant experience for me although I was happy he was fine. It's surreal and scary to be in the situation. It's not my first time rescuing a child but my feelings was always the same.
    It was in the hotel pool so there was no guard.
    Anyway, what I want to say is if a parent wants to bring a child to the pool especially in one without a lifeguard, please ensure you change into a proper swimming attire and go down to the pool with your young child and ensure he stays at a safe level in the pool. Bring along an adult who can swim well to watch over the child if you cannot swim.

    I rescued a child in a pool once, I'm not sure anyone even noticed it. He was 3-4 years old on a floatie and slipped off. I was standing on the edge literally right next to where he went under, and jumped in and pulled him up (I had a mouth full of food, which I always remember for some reason). There were a lot of kids and it was crowded - I was only a teen myself. He's married and I think has a son now! But they're absolutely right, drowning is quick and subtle.

    Quick question: I actually know the basic swim movements, but I have a fear of water because I almost drowned as a child. However when I was about 16 or 17, I had to swim at school, and my swim teacher wanted me to go into the deepest pool. She assured me that my movements are good enough to actually swim, however my fear holds me back. So I listened and went in, it went well in the beginning, I stuck close to the walls just in case, however after a while I started panicking and drifted off, further into the middle, then all of a sudden I started splashing, and eventually I was drowning. Damn I was scared, choking on water, no-one in sight (At this point I still wasn't crying out for help, because of embarrassment and just not truly recognizing the danger quite yet) However, I then remembered what people say about not panicking, so I actually calmed down, allowed my body to sink a little deeper, but now with less thrashing, I was able to better recognize my movements and just repeated the skills I learned, how to move my arms, and legs, and pushed myself back to the surface and swam back against the wall. I finally realized what had happened and let out a deep sigh of relief. But afterwards I decided not to push my luck and just didn't go into the deepest pool ever again. What do you guys think about this story? Do I really just have a fear holding me back? Or should I just stay the hell away from deep waters? 😅

      You have to keep trying! I’ve almost drowned at least 5+ times. When I was little I would practice in the jacuzzi think I was doing good then jump in the pool and sink like a rock. Every fail was scary but I was determined to not forever be the kid that has to sit on the side during birthday parties that couldn’t swim . I kept testing my boundaries. I did it smartly when adults were around and I was saved each time I failed. Eventually one random day I was with two friends at a pool. They were swimming and I jumped in the deep end and I could swim!! I was screaming like I m doing it!! They were confused like is this really your first day? I’m like yeah look at me I’m swimming!! Ever since that day I could swim. No regrets

    • @katydid5088
      @katydid5088 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Keep trying.
      Practice with others around who are aware that you are not/are afraid of swimming and deep water. Swimming in deep water and being able to rescue yourself is a skillset that takes practice. The first time you may need it is not the first time you want to practice having to swim long distance, float, breath hold, and resting or performing a self rescue from the sides of a pool, boat, or parts of an ocean, river. Slipping into the water is rare but it can happen, even when you do your level best to avoid water.
      Avoidance usually only means that when the accidents take place you are more likely to die because you never took the time to practice. Try and find something fun to do in the pool or water so that you feel comfortable. (Think learning kicks and turns in the water, swimming distances while alternating strokes and breath holds/float techniques, catching dive rings, ect.) The more comfortable you are with the physical effort of swimming the better off you will be.
      If somewhere offers it (as not all pools do) make sure your swim training includes classes that require you to be fully clothed during an emergency accidental immersion. Most accidents occur with clothes on and the extra weight can make people too tired or shocked to pull themselves out. They start to panic with the weight on them and forget their swim technique.
      My only other big piece of advice is when a drowning looks like it's taking place (that this video didn't cover) throw something to the person and do not go in yourself if there is something buoyant nearby. Even for a very experienced swimmer, if the person comes to or won't relax after you have a hold of them, you need to get them calm or risk being pulled under and becoming a second victim. This is why life guards always have the leashed floatie with them when they go into a rescue. A poor swimmer is more likely to kill you after or as you rescue them because they have a tendency to panic. By giving them something to hold onto while you pull them along, they are less likely to be panicked, making your job MUCH easier.

    That thing with children and bathing rings is a very real danger. I remember being on vacation with my mom. We were at the hotel pool and I had my bathing ring on. Children are stupid and don’t think their actions through. In the spirit of this I jumped, head first, into a relatively deep part of the pool, bathing ring equipped. It was way smaller than the one in this video so I was quite literally stuck upside down in the water. Luckily my mom was watching from her seat, as responsible parents do, and jumped in to save me. I have no idea if there was a life guard, but I really hope my mom was just faster than them.

    I remember me, my brother, and my gf swimming in Lake Michigan last summer when I was 17, during a yellow flags day with heavy undertow. I was enjoying the big waves while bouncing off the bottom. My gf and brother are not good swimmers at all so that’s why we have just been staying in areas where we can touch the bottom but I start searching for my brother and I see he’s far out treading water and I knew something was wrong so I go to get him. I get to him and he’s in a spot where even I can’t touch. I feel like the waves undertow was sucking us out more so I try physically dragging him to me. We both go under and I’m trying to get up while trying to hold him up because I know he wouldn’t be able to tread while the waves are bombarding us. I turn around and my gf is right behind me. I’m screaming for her to go back while I’m gasping for air and burping up water in between the waves and so is my brother. Either she gets sucked out and I make it to her and the waves are still horrible and I’m on my tippy toes along the bottom while my gf and brother cling on to me. I try holding them up, Each wave that comes we’re all submerged and come out burping up water and gasping. My little brother let’s go at somepoint because he sees what’s happening to me. I start to go sideways from shore because that’s the only thing I can think of doing. We get to a spot where I know my gf can actually stand and I tell her to go get out and I turn around to find my brother. I see two men wading out and I scream at them to help my brother who’s closer to them now. The men seem to struggle too while getting them out. I am a football player and wrestler so I am decently strong but I felt helpless in this Situation and I thank God that he allowed us to live. The sounds of us burping up water and gasping for air in our panic and desperation haunts me to this day a year later and I can’t get it out of my mind. I pray no one will ever have to go through something like that. I’ve had nightmares and episodes of trauma. Whenever I see someone remotely struggling in water or gasping in water or thrashing around it tightens my throat and I feel the panic inside me start to rise. I think about what could of happened that day and it makes me horrified.

He must of not been no older than 4-5 years old with no flotation device and at the deepest end of the pool, me and my friend signalled and shouted for a lifeguard sitting on those high chairs but he wouldn’t look at me, I was worried he inhaled water into his lungs; he finally spotted his parents and I said what happened and I think they should take him to the hospital to check he doesn’t have water on his lungs; they didn’t even care. I hope that boy is fine and doing well today. I’m relatively small, short and with a lot of health issues, and if it was a heavier and taller person than me idk how I’d do it, so thanks for this video ❤

      You grab people by the head or face to keep them above water, especially if they are still conscious. If they are unconscious and a life guard does not have their floatie (specifically because keeping an unconscious person on it adds more time to effect the rescue) there is no other way to keep their head stable than grabbing them by the nape of the neck (the back or front, depending on if they have to right them). The victim can no longer actively control their breathing and therefore their buoyancy. Better to be sore than dead, when it comes to drowning.

    A pool is different, but in a lake if im with someone who starts drowning and panicking, if he is bigger than me im not going to go close to him. Because he will just drag me down and we both die.

    I saved a little girl from drowning when i was 7..
    The father was so happy i saved her- and I'm like "I DON'T EVEM KNOW HOW TO SWIM YET, I'M WEARING A LIFE JACKET AND I'M 7" [my mother never brought me to any swim places before, cuz i never really liked water touching my skin. I also didn't say these words to them, i was a shy child TvT]

    Me and my wife saved today totally drank man in Athens, Paleo Faliro beach by dragging him around 250 m from sea to the shore. He was almost unconscious , did not move. I am good swimmer, did 10 k open water swimming several years ago, but I was totally tired at the shore after 250 m rescue swim, holding the head of man from the back and my wife assisting me and pulling the arm. My son 10 years old was swimming close with us. The most awful thing is that there was rescue team on the beach, but they were not watching at all - nobody was trying to assist us until we reached shore. Only then rescue arrived and helped. Hope the man will be fine, as he was still slightly breathing and ambulance took him quite fast.

    Totally disagree. If someone is actively in distress you need to grab and give them a flotation device. Absent that a pole, a stick, etc. Coming right up to a drowning person like that would be the last choice. Reason is a drowning person is desperate/panicking and will claw and grab at you. They'll bring you down under the water in an attempt to get to the surface themselves. Don't be another victim. Get a flotation device.

      Most often they will be panicked until you get them up out of the water past their shoulders. This is a fun video to watch but I hope people don't intend on using this for their personal life near water. This will surely end up causing deaths if it is not clear this is not something you can just hop into the water and perform, this takes much training to do it safely and effectively. A small child drowning is more than strong enough to pull a full grown swimmer down let alone another drowning adult. Please leave the rescuing to the people who are trained. The best thing you can do if you notice someone drowning and are not trained as a lifeguard is to call for help and try to reach or throw something to them.

  • @hibuddywuzsup571
    @hibuddywuzsup571 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    If someone is drowning, they will be frantically grabbing and pulling on the person trying to save them. Once water gets into people's nose or airway, they won't be able to transition into being calm. Secondly you have to be really strong to save someone from the bottom because you have to kick up yourself plus them. This made it look too easy. If you aren't as calm or as strong as trained lifeguards, you will only be joining in as an extra drowning death.
