@@PHlophe im safer here than in the US by 100 times but an open moto going 25mph doesn't offer much protection in an accident

That's a scooter, the kind of vehicle where you sit like a chair with your feet in front of you. A moped is a bicycle-type vehicle with an engine and pedals.
My second moped accident I suffered from a broken arm, hip fracture and 2 broken fingers

It hits most often those who do not ride a motorcycle at home, that means: lack of practice + unfamiliar roads + holiday high mood = The End.

No Gear, Carrying a passenger, Unfamiliar roads , possibly intoxicated, and dark is literally a recipe for disaster. What did he expect was going to happen. Mopeds/Motorcycles are NOT toys, they will kill or seriously injure you if you do not respect them.
Just leave mopeds alone in country's like Thailand

Being on a 🏍 you are so exposed it’s not worth it. Just drive a 🚗 or better yet use public transport especially if you live in a big city

I had a moped for a few months and I never had an accident but I had a couple near misses. I was naive too, I wore a helmet I knew was too big because I couldn't be bothered buying a smaller one and I would drive it in whatever I felt like wearing that day, sometimes skirts or shorts. I think mopeds are fantastic, but you need to know the risks and that drivers are gonna be assholes. Don't take driving a moped lightly

Shouldn't he have been wearing leathers? Helmet, jacket and chaps, which you need for any motorcycle (even if it's a moped).

Mopeds aren't inherently dangerous, it's when you don't know how to handle one and abroad countries don't care whether or not you have a license. I wouldn't say "how not to die from a moped: don't ride one" , just understand how to ride and how to be safe on one. I don't blame this guy, accidents do happen and I feel for him but I'm just commenting on the narrative behind it.
