  • How well does Fate/Grand Order portray Jason, Captain of the Argo? How close is Jason's in-game version to his mythological counterpart? In this video we delve into his character design, in-game skills, and characterization in order to determine that, followed up by giving it a grade in terms of its accuracy to the source material. Was Jason truly a self-important ship captain who was deeply flawed yet could have moments of brilliance? Find out here!

He can be a narcissistic coward, but when push comes to shove he's the right guy for the job, and you can see why even with people like Atalanta, Medea, Heracles, Theseus , Perseus and other much more powerful heroes on the team, he was the one in command.

I personally like jason's legend, because he wasn't a demigod born with great powers but rather was blessed by Hera being one of her few chosen heroes because of his kindness in helping an old lady cross a river, her in disguised if i remember right. He managed to do the impossible because of his past kindess and got through difficult times with the trust he placed in his crew. I loved how much closer to a layman jason felt as a hero, and how he fell was a logical point where due to his own actions of no longer being the good man he used to be everything came crashing down. I really love the fgo depiction because it changes jason in ways that while making him seem less good, fits his character in his later life, and infact makes him a far better hero because he fights against incredible odds that he can't possibly contend with and shows the good man his early life in his legend was supposed to portray.

The thing I love the most about Jason in FGO is the running gag of him being absolutely terrified of Medea. It’s a detail that is really only possible because of how Servants work. Whenever I get the option to antagonize Jason with it, I always go for it and get hilarious reactions.

In later parts of FGO, it's kinda implied that Medea doesn't absolutely despise him. She talks to him like how an ex-wife talks to her former spouse.

1:46 My theory for the wings is that they are manifested from the Golden Fleece. It came from a golden-woolled flying ram, who is sometimes described or depicted as having wings. Granted, it's not the case in ancient art (as far as I can find), so it's seemingly a more modern invention. But Spartoi (Dragon Tooth Warriors) weren't skeletons in ancient sources either, so more modern depictions are fair game for Fate.

They did such a good job with Jason
The fact that he is a bundle of opposites and issues adds so much to when he really does buckle down and do what needs to be done
I also like that he and Medea still have a fairly "friendly" relationship despite everything
a sort of situation where Jason knows he did so much wrong that he can't really apologize for so he doesn't and Medea seeming to have kind if forgiven him to some degree even without an apology (though that might be because she is one of the few greek women that actually gets some kinda of "happy" ending also maybe cause she knows his actions eventually caught up with him)
Also the changes are to put him inline with Shinji Matou I believe idk if there is any official evidence of that or just a feeling off the top of my head I just remember hearing that somewhere and it makes a lot of sense

Thinking about it now, even though adult Medea has shown that she doesn’t think highly of Jason, she still looks out for him whenever trouble arises. This can be clearly seen in the Final Singularity and the Caren Valentine event. It kinda hints that she still cares somewhat about him, or is at least willing to put her feelings aside for a greater purpose.

My main takeaway from every Greek myth ever: NEVER get involved with the Greek Gods. It never ends well for anyone involved. That said, I'm looking forward to Medea getting a video at some point. I think her story prompts a pretty interesting discussion that Fate dives head first into occasionally about free will, since it can be debated how much of what she did was of her own choice, and how much she was forced into by Ero's power altering her mind

When it comes to myth I like to interpret divine intervention, lineage, blessings, or machinations as the interpretation the people that made the myths. FGO Jason's skill "Inspiration at Death's Door" is, in my opinion, more accurate to what would have been the real ability of Jason. To the people, Jason's cleverness and ability to survive was so great it was practically divine intervention.

I'd like to point out the B++ Rank on Jason's third Skill and NP (even tho I think I already did so in a comment on a previous video), and how fitting they are. + and - in ranks are not intermediary ranks (at least not in lore), and are instead conditionals, where each + being a multiplier for it, so a D+ for instance would be a D most of the time, but in a certain situation could be up to the strength of B rank. B+++ (the rank of Jason's NP after his interlude), while being a B rank usually, can be more powerful than Excalibur if the situation is right. his Skill is stronger based on the presence of Argo allies, and his NP is dependent on the way his crew sees him, but if they see him positively he can be an absolute powerhouse (again, surpassing Artoria's Excalibur).

If there is one emotional weakness I have in regards to deaths it's those who die while expressing regret. This definitely applies to Jason because while he did make some mistakes, you could also say that he still tried to make the best of the lot he was given in life. I respect that and so his final end, carved into his spirit origin, is a tragedy that I grieve for on the same level as Okita and Ushiwaka.

I think you're downplaying just how capable Jason's mythological counterpart is, he has proven to be a good leader and strong warrior (by normal human standards at least) the reason why he relies so much on "divine intervention" is because he has literally been given tasks wich were meant to be impossible and not to forget he is just a dude. Overall great video i only disagree with the part where you claim his Fate counterpart to be more capable

I do think that his summoning in Okeanos (and by extension Solomon) is as Rider, but that's just a hypothesis based on the difference in his design. It's also different in that the only Argonauts who seem to respond to his call no matter what are Heracles and Medea Lily, so he might have used it in Okeanos, but passively instead of active, or even as a Rider the Argo itself could be part of the Noble Phantasm, and not just his crew.

What I love about Jason in FGO (after his revival, Okeanos doesn't count) is that he has a strong instinct of survival. His antics make it seem like he is a coward, but what I see is someone who knows their flaws, can recognize the talents of others and is smart enough to take decisions that will keep him alive and bring him success. Not saying he won't brag about any of this and take credits (the one part I don't like about him lol) though...

I really like Jason for the sole fact that I read The Iliad as a kid. I had forgotten most of the plot, but still remembered the feelings I felt when reading his adventures. My fascination with his exploits, made even better by the greatly detailed imagery accompanying it, and how sad I felt at his ironic death. Reading his heroics in Atlantis, his interactions with other characters, and Fate’s rendition of his canonical death made me feel those same emotions all over again. It was so nostalgic. And as someone who forgot most of what I read of the OF story, the lore inaccuracy didn’t bother me from enjoying his character. It feels like seeing a completely new side of him. If anything, it piqued my interest in reading the original Iliad again, to see how much of a crafty protagonist and loser the original Jason was lol. So kudos to Higashide (writer of Jason)! I think he did a good job.

The Jason in fgo, especially the Okeanos version, is actually largely based off of an Athenian play of his story where he is much more of a buttmonkey than in the original legend, also in the original myth he doesn't make the decision to abandon Medea lightly, a king from a neighbouring country who had taken the both of them in promises his support but only if Jason married the king's daughter, Jason took a long time to agree with this and beforehand made sure that Medea and their 3 children lived in comfort in a mansion with many servants, however Medea still got pissy about it and stabbed their kids to death and made a poisoned bridal gown for the princess (we even see a similar dress in Stay Night)
Also technically you've been pronouncing Jason's name wrong the entire time lol, originally his name was spelled Iason however, and this is just me speculating, in early Germanic languages J and I were pronounced pretty much the same and his name was written both ways, by the time modern English had developed only the J version remained which by then was of course pronounced differently, we can actually still see this in modern German where the letters are still pronounced the same and both Jason and Iason are still used, though Jason is still the more popular spelling of his name

He did use a lot of help, but he was successful in leading an extremely dangerous expedition without any special power of his own. I think he could have been way scarier as a charismatic manipulator, who may lack brawn or magic powers, but can sweet talk anyone into doing his bidding. I like the comedic spin though. I really disliked Jason in Okeanos but he became one of my favorites in Atlantis.
I actually haven't read much about him outside of FGO so this is very insightful, thank you! I didn't know he got so much help from gods during his quest. I just kinda assumed he was just a really good leader and that's why he succeeded.

11:34 i’d like to say that you forgot depression because I mean think about it you gone through many dangerous situations that could have killed you to attain your dream of being a king and your team who had been with you since the start of the journey disbanded after you complete the quest and just when your about to become king just to find out that your journey was pointless and you never became king but just to make things worse you and your yandere girlfriend get exiled because same girlfriend killed the previous king the one put on that quest in the first place you see what I’m saying is when he got exiled he was undoubtably feeling depression and Jason just made things even worse poor Jason I kinda feel bad for him also i like to mention good on the video I really like it hope you more videos like this in the future.
