    In the "Cats" clip, it looks to me like the reason they stalled so long with the sheet was because the trap door got stuck and they finally said, "Fuck it" and decided to leave it open. I could be wrong, but that's what it seems like.

    I think in the CATS clip, that particular performance was slow only because the trap door got caught and they waited as long as they could to try to fix it. But at some point you gotta move on and just go with it.
    I bet if you found other clips, even clips of the same performers on the same stage, the trick might go much quicker and smoother because the door didn't malfunction.

    According to IMDB trivia for the Escape Artist...
    Actor Griffin O'Neal took a crash course in magic and its philosophy with technical advisor Ricky Jay for his role as teenage magician Danny Masters in this movie. This included learning such tricks as juggling, fine-fingered lock work and sleight-of-hand maneuvers.

    This one is probably a longshot, but~ There's a South Korean Netflix show called Busted! And in season 1 episode 7 "The Vanished Magician" the subject of the case, a magician, performs on stage an illusion for the cast of the show~~~ (it starts at the 6:47 mark in the episode)
    Busted! has the main cast (Korean celebrities from various backgrounds) playing detective versions of themselves solving "cases", often involving escape room scenarios^.^ Many of the people they interact with in the episodes, like the magician, are played by other celebrities. The special guests have a script & information for the case they usually need to relay, but the main cast of detectives are just generally reacting honestly to what happens around them.

  • @lovemarlee
    @lovemarlee 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    tbh, and this doesn't excuse the lameness or laziness of the "tricks" in Cats, but they probably took so long with the sheet because they were waiting for the trap to close. I've seen lots of professional shows where something like that goes wrong and the actors just have to make the decision to keep going until whatever went wrong is fixed or a stage manager comes out and tell the audience they need five minutes to fix it and they'll restart.

    Magic consultant for Cats was Scott Penrose.... Former president of the British The Magic Circle (at the time sponsored by Paul Daniels), he's a honorary vice president of The Britsh Magic Society... and a gold star member of the Inner Magic Circle. This job was just horrendous though - oh, he also consulted for the illusionist...

  • @gordonmcknight8877
    @gordonmcknight8877 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Now that musicals are fair game, please have a look at Shrek: The Musical! This isn't presented as a magic trick, but it's a subtle stage illusion that has puzzled me every time I've seen it. In the filmed version (on Netflix), at about the 0:26 minute mark, the fade transition from the magic mirror to young Fiona is inexplicable. The only explanation I can think of is scrims, but the mirror is a real LED-array screen so that theory doesn't work.
    Also for what it's worth, that was a local, not a Broadway production of Cats.

    For the Cats one, I feel they did a better version of it in the 1998 filmed production of it; rather than having the girl disappear, removing the cloth, and then bringing the cloth further downstage to have Old Deuteronomy come out of the trap behind the cloth, the 1998 filmed production did it more in the vein of Things That Go Bump In The Night. The TH-cam channel The Shows Must Go On has the full clip of the song from the 1998 filmed production

    I'm sorry, but I do feel that CATS need a little defense here... CATS is a stage show that is a Musical. The set doesn't change and all the people on stage are singers and dancers (that is their profession). There is another version out there where the "girl cat" crawls from the end of the tube to the center of the stage while under the blanket only to have the blanket pulled away to reveal the cat that was catnapped (kidnapped) earlier. (No tap door for that one) but the cats still have about the same excited reaction to the magic. But, on the plus side, at the end of that song Mr. Mistopholies does vanish mid air into a burst of glitter (definitely not a camera cut for the video 😉)

There are so many more thematically interesting ways they could've done that. . .Like, I get that sometimes things go wrong, but I feel like from just a planning perspective, they could've gone with something with fewer "moving parts" and achieved the same effect or much better.

      Yes. Whenever Wes looks at 'tricks' from shows that feature the supernatural, I wonder how much is meant to be a trick and how much is meant to be supernatural and, therefore, inevitably done with special effects rather than practical magic.

    Patch Adams or anything with the late Robin Williams. He had a few movies that there was magic.

    I’m waiting for the episode with just clips from Bewitched an I dream of Jeanie with you just saying it’s a camera trick over and over.

    2:30 does anyone know the name of this actor? I can probably find it doing enough research but it would take way to long. He just looks so familiar!! Like he's butcher from the boys but younger ? Or maybe his brother? Someone help!! Lol I hate not knowing something like that 😂

    I just watched One Night Only: Best of Broadway on Hulu and at 1hr:7-10min the cat of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child perform actual magic. Just thought you should know. (My Hulu says it's only available to watch for 10 more days.)
