He simply turned the deck with the photo 180 degrees and asked to attach the selected photos back. Thus the selected photos are turned upside down in the whole deck. Then you can see how he flip the photos back when he places them on the table. I knew right away that Justin and Obama were chosen. This trick is best performed with playing cards, because only you can see the turned cards. This does not even reach the average level of magic. It is a shame that such guests show such mediocre tricks which is 200 years :(

I feel like any of us who have watched Derren for the past two decades are happy he’s reached Broadway BUT know that this stuff is like party tricks compared to the insane stuff he’s capable of doing.
You mean like paying actors to play the role of astonished "victim". There is no bigger fraud than Derren Brown. He LITERALLY places ads in the local actors trades publications auditioning for his "regular people". Those that get the role sign a non-disclosure, and then are treated like any other actor. They get a script. There is a table read. There are rewrites. There is a director during the shoot directing then through multiple takes. They have marks that they must stand on on each shot. He is as good as "magician" as GOB Bluth. And about as talented.

I've always wanted to see someone interviewed whose been in a special, like the apocalypse dude!
My girlfriend caught one of the frisbees he used to get the audience to chuck around to choose people. He did that instant hypnotism thing on her as well, I remember at the time thinking that's weird my girlfriends lying on the stage in front of hundreds of people. What he's always done really well is mix up slight of hand magic with manipulation of people. The likliehood with this trick is he already knew what cards they'd chosen from the time he got them to place them back in the pack. But it's the presentation of the reveal where he is the king.

He comes off as a mediocre magician when he in fact is a fantastic mentalist and performer who has done groundbreaking and absolutely mind boggling work for 20 years. Do yourself a favor and forget this segment and look up his other stuff. You're welcome.

He's been doing live shows, in the UK at least, for a good 10-15 years now, and at the live shows he often chooses audience members to come up by throwing a Frisbee into the audience (eliminating the ability to choose a stooge) and gets the same results with tricks like this there. Obviously there's a trick behind it but it won't be 'let's corroborate before the show' when he doesn't need to do that.

Derren Brown is an absolute genius. If you haven’t seen any of his stuff in the states I urge you too see it. I’m English and I fucking love the man. He’s not a fake or a con artist and he doesn’t make out to have super powers etc he is just beyond talented. Superb man

I love how Derren puts people to ‘sleep’. It os so clever. He can only do it to people who are suggestible but the way he does it is remarkable. His ability to confuse someone so much that they do as he says is amazing. He confuses them then gives them an easy way out and for someone who is easily suggestible they take it. It is so clever how he does it!
I went to one of his shows and seeing him do it live was crazy
It is easy to be "suggestible" when you are in on the trick, being paid to do what the script says. Which is exactly what all of Derren Brown's "stooges" are. Unknown, up and coming actors who answers his ad in local actor publications. Actors who get a script, do table reads, do rehearsals, are told exactly what to do at all times by a director, and do multiple takes.
this has been pretty well known about Brown for about a decade now. When he did that "I am giving these store clerks blank pieces of paper and telling them it is money and they take it" bullshit. One of the actors came forward with the script.
My girlfriend was picked at one of his shows and had this "induction" hypnotism done to her. I can assure you she is not a stooge but she did say that although it doesn't look like it there's quite a bit of physical force involved, backed up by the words to enforce the this is the path of least resistance message. To my knowledge (and having seen him live 3 times) Derren doesn't use stoogies, unlike say dynamo, Copperfield et al. That's not to say he doesn't cheat, spotters in the audience, simple card forces dressed up etc, but that's magic. I don't mind being tricked but I don't like being cheated and for me Derrens always stayed the right side of this line.
@@MrClarkio I went to one of his shows and all the way through I thought all these people could be stooges, I'm a real skeptic. He said during the show if you don't want to take part to close your eyes, I kept mine open and the lights went down and red lights flashed. Then at the end the lights flashed again and when they stopped the box was swinging from a rope. The lights flashed for like 2 seconds not enough time for anyone to move, I was watching closely no one moved. Then the camera guy showed what happened and derren had got up from his chair, attached the box to the rope and got it swinging, then went to the front of the stage, posed and put his thumb up at the audience then went back to his chair. So somehow those flashing lights stopped us seeing that. It's crazy. I'm a skeptic and none of the other things he did during the show worked on me but that did and tbh I didn't even remember it until someone else reminded me.
@@JennyL.I yeah he's riffed on that theme of distraction a few times. He used it quite a bit on his svengali tour I think. He started the show by showing the video of people playing table tennis and asked us to count the number of hits. Then when it was finished he asked "who noticed the gorilla" which of course nearly everyone, including me, had missed in the video. The human brain is easily distracted it would seem.
I love that the guy from the roots always wears a heart on his suit probably why jimmy Fallon is one of my favorite late night hosts
I’m from England and been to see Derren Brown. He’s amazing! I love how he’s unlike others and says he’s NOT psychic. It’s all mind reading and influencing. He did this “guess who” kinda thing at the show I went to. My dad was one of the faces because he used audience members lol 😂.

You Americans don't actually get how talented this man is. He is doing no where near his best here. Us British know what's he's capable as he had his own show on channel 4 and he would always perform on stage. This trick is 95% showmanship. Derren knows who they have both picked soon after they pick them but if he was to immediately say it then it would be a boring trick. The rest of the trick is Derren convincing everyone that he read their minds.
Derren is an amazing magician but I didn't feel like this was one of his best tricks.

@@hhijazi6296 there are many ways he could have done it. The way he actually did it is so simple! At 1:44 when they put the cards back in the deck he's holding the deck upside down so the cards that Jimmy & Quest put in are the a different way round to all the others. Now watch from 1:58 and see that twice he has to turn the deck around and at that point he knows what the two cards are!
Derren has made a career out of doing very simple tricks but using showmanship to make people think that the explanation is much more complex. The audience don't think about the simple explanations because they are thinking too much about the complex stuff e.g. mind reading. It's very clever what he does.

Simple card trick played out to be a mind reading trick, the sheer genius of Derren Brown. He knew from the start what they’re cards were, he made them place them in certain positions back into the deck by slowing down the shuffle and slight of hand. His work is unbelievable.

I think he's just doing the mentalist trick of picking up on subtle clues. That's a commonly done thing.

I already know how he found out who their cards were, when they put it back, their cards were upside down while the others were in one orientation, when he puts the cards on the table he knows whose is which bc of the level they're on and their upside down orientation, you can even see him turn a card as he places them.
You are correct. What I don't understand is how he could be sure that they would put the cards back into the pile in the opposite direction as the others. Maybe everyone always puts them back with the head pointing up/away from them because it is human nature.

The trick was super simple to do .. he knew the guesses for both of them by the time 2:15 hit.. and I spotted his move, in fact I was shocked he was so obvious.. ( notice him twisting the deck of photos.... )
Their cards were put back in from THEIR perspective.. they were looking at them right side up =) .. he twisted the deck so when they put them back.. they would be upside down..
so when he put the cards down on the table.. he flipped the deck twice .. he knew exactly when he encountered an upside down celebrity that it was picked.. and he can easily gauge by where they put the cards back in whether he would be Love's or Jimmy's .. the rest is theatrics..
I knew the guessed celebrities immediately from catching that.. and I was right :)

This one was disappointingly obvious .. usually he's playing a good game, he uses a lot of fakery though.. I caught him using actors in some of his past videos which I got demonized for =) a group didn't believe me when I told them I spotted actors.. people who were in multiple episodes of his shows and then I found their personal "resume" pages and IMDB credits..
This was a few years back by now.. and the IMDB stuff was removed and their resume's edited.. so I'm assuming they broke an NDA and I got them in trouble ( oops ) .. but I did win the argument because of it..
I have nothing against Darren, but I did take issue with that show because they explicitly said no actors were used.. and I did catch at least two that were in more than one episode and were paid actors .. stooges are just a part of the act, and Penn & Teller say it best when they tell you that the one thing magicians always do is lie.. that's what they are best at, and regardless what he calls himself.. Darren is a magician through and through..

Just goes to show that a very simple trick can have a great effect if enough showmanship is applied. This is one the very first tricks I ever learned way back when I was 10 or something. Very easy... also published by John Scarne... different setup... but the method is the same.

Its not all like that, these 2 guys gave zero compliance and he had no choice but to do it that way also. There are plenty "real" things he does with magick, nlp and the like that are genuine(even tho he denies it), he does have real powers unlike most other magicians who are purely sleight-of-hand artists. Derren does do sleight-of-hand but it is not all.

The greatest illusion is that everyone thinks it was a mind trick. It was a card trick. He forced the cards where he wanted and when he turned them over he knew what the cards were. The trick was over in 30 seconds the rest was elabrate acting.
I think the first trick is to introduce the possibilty that he has magic to make the 2nd trick even crazier
When Jimmy and Quest put the cards back - into the deck - he controlled the positions of the cards - and also held the deck up side down - if you check again the video - he turned over the deck at 2.03 - and placed Justin on the table (that was Quest's card) and the next one was Obama.

Their cards are upside down on the deck if you look right before he places Justin he flips the deck in his hand. He knows most likely they're holding the cards heads up so he reverses the deck in his hand heads down so that they're easy to identify.

When he hypnotized QuestLove he emphasized words like "floating" and "ripple". The trick isn't that he read QuestLove's mind but that he planted a false memory in his mind of picking Justin TimberLAKE. Notice how QuestLove said "no" first, then said yes but sounded confused.

Once the card drops in his hand, he notes it by pulling it out farther with his thumb and shuffles it to the top or bottom of the deck so he knows where it is, then when he flips them face up he knows automatically what was picked by looking at the face of the card at the top pr the bottom of the shuffle. All the rest is theatrics.
At the very end Derren knew Jimmy´s crush is Nicole, he just did not want to expose him. Nice way to protect Jimmy´s feelings.
Jimmy Fallon is about as easy to read as a golden book.
