- EvolutionDoor represents the penultimate stage of development of Klemens Torggler doors. The work was invented in 2012. It is the most prominent work of Klemens Torggler. Unlike the earlier kinetic works, this object moves from only one plane and unfolds into a third dimension during the movement process. It is definitely a work of art with impeccable utility and significant appearance, and like all other kinetic works by Klemens Torggler, a work with high spatial economy.
The individual squares are bordered with a soft and elastic material that acts as a pinch protection. The EvolutionDoor has been produced and presented in a wide range of variants, from minimalist objects made of wooden slats and paper, to variants made of solid wood, to elaborate objects made of aluminum or steel and with surfaces of glass or fabric.
The EvolutionDoor® kinetic sculptures as well as any other concept by Klemens Torggler are internationally copyrighted as individual artistic creations.

Why are people making the mistake of thinking this door moves slow?
It was given a gentle push so we can see in detail how it works. It moves much faster if you pushed it hard.
You can see it begin to slow down during the first push and the man had to nudge it again.
True...
It probably just needs springs within the panels hinge-folds. Each with a slight static tension to hold the panel flat. Then when the user gives the door a push to the opposite position, the springs will take the energy as added tension. After reaching the halfway max-fold point, use that added energy to re-flatten the panels in their new positions. And since the springs will still have the original static tension, they will still hold the panels flat. But now in the new door position.

Ah yes, because this is a practical assessment for a real life door.
also this thing 100% moves extremely fast, the guy just barely tapped it to show how easy it is to close because of weight distribution that simply isn't available in normal doors. You could definitely just forcefully move that thing and shut it in like 3 seconds; it definitely wouldn't be as fast or efficient as a normal door, but by no means would you have to sit through a RDR2 esque animation pondering the existence of this door for a few seconds before it finally closes.
You could literally put like, a single piece of plastic from a clothes hanger in the right spot on this thing and you'd never see the other side; just put it at the top where it has to go up to open by making a little divit for it to fit in the doorframe and you're set. Overall it's like a solid 8/10 on the "security door for sudden home invasion of zombies" scale for me.

I remember seeing this video and a couple of others like it in a compilation video--possibly on Instagram--a few years ago and instantly wanting one of those doors; I still do to this day.
As a flooring installer, it kills me that they had time and money to make that super cool door, but never took the time and money to fix that squeaking subfloor 😂😂
