Shortened version. Written by Stephen Bishop. I like 👍 this version. I like to hear this as a duet with a woman 👩 of the choice from Stephen Bishop. Beautiful song 🎵
Even as a 10 year-old when this song came out, I was struck by how different this song was. In the Decade of the Beat, the entire first verse is RUBATO!? Whaaat!?Empty space!? Not even a click-track! For the first time I realized there's two single 2/4 measures within the 4/4 song... one is the swell from the pre-bridge (pre-bridge?) into the bridge (after "love leads to isolation") The second one in the actual bridge, during the word "stronger" (the part we all love the most!) And when they're sustaining on "stronger" what makes it so effective is that Marilyn Martin drops down one note, but Phil Collins stays on the same note! He could have dropped too and it would still work in the chord structure they're on, but by holding his note - it creates that dissonance that takes it too a new level... such that when they land on "right" on the downbeat of the next measure, the tension is released, the dissonance is resolved, and it's all like one big musical orgasm. That's some BRILLIANT songwriting! It makes us feel life's paradoxes... like there can be beauty in pain. The more you love - the more it can burn. Silence can be the loudest. Kind words can feel like daggers. Your loneliest times can be when you're with someone. Sometimes you need to let go in order to keep from falling apart. One of the greatest songs of the 80s and one of the greatest love songs ever written. 🙏
Mr. Bishop 😊 You changed my life with your music. I can Never tell you enough how much I still love what you do. Blessings from Paso Robles, California, Carlos ✝️🙏❤️😊🇺🇸

My favourite songwriter.
You look a tad lost without a guitar...
Great song!
