    I'm blown away to find out the Phil Collins/Marilyn Martin song I've loved for 38 years is actually a Stephen Bishop cover. I can’t believe it! Better late than never, I guess. His version is beautiful too.

      The actual songwriter's version is, in my experience, always the best. This was Bishop's best penned song ever imho.

      Well, Stephen Bishop wrote it and sang it. He sang it at the 1986 Academy Awards. That video is on his Facebook page. Dionne Warwick did a solo version in 1986 on the "Solid Gold" television music-variety series, of which she was the host at the time, and Stephen Bishop did a duet with Dionne on a different episode of "Solid Gold" in 1986 as well and both are on TH-cam. The Phil Collins-Marilyn Martin version was the version used on the 1985 movie, "White Nights", soundtrack, so it is the most well-known as a duet, but Stephen Bishop has his solo version, as shown and heard here. It is the original, his rendition.

      @@Kinkle_ZThat is often the case, but not all composers and lyricists are able to sing well. Stephen Bishop is, however, one of those who does all of that. He is a very special artist.

    I heard this song and this exact verion playing on a radio station (Home Radio CDO) way back 2007-2008 everytime I sleep around 2-3pm.
    This song reminds me all the heartbreaks I've been through.

      Way back to 2007-2008. That was awhile ago. The song is from 1985, which is way back into an earlier era. No matter, it is a great song.

    As Whitney Houston made Dolly Parton’s song I will always love you a huge hit, so did Phil Collins with this song. Amazing. ❤❤❤❤❤❤

    • @Kinkle_Z
      @Kinkle_Z ปีที่แล้ว

      I prefer Dolly's original version. I also prefer Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now" over Judy Collin's meh version and Steve Goodman's "City of New Orlean's" over Arlo Guthrie's cover of his song. The original is almost always better than a cover.

    I've never heard Phil Collins' version... only Steve Bishop's original version and no offense... but this original by my SD homey songwriter, Stephen, can never be improved upon. He completely nails it.

      The Phil Collins version is actually a duet with Marilyn Martin and was used for the "White Nights" 1985 movie and soundtrack.

    Stephen’s version of his song is more powerful IMO. He has a vulnerability in his voice that comes through. I read that he wrote this after a breakup with Karen Allen, who he met on the set of “Animal House”. Don’t know if it’s true.

    If this song were a person, Phil Collins and Marilyn Martin would be in jail! I never knew that their version was actually a cover. This version sounds like it could be an "unplugged" rendition or even.... horrors.... a demo. It's nice but not as glorious as the "White Nights" version.
