      Love that you talk about this :) as a saddler, leatherworker, bonded leather is the poorest of all leather material, -and if thinking about envoroment, plastic is not the way.. the future is not "plastic and syntetic food".. Just my opinion :) Have a good day!

    Ugh this is so insulting I’m so sick of “vegan or recycled” leather. It’s so insulting to someone in their 40s. I remember good quality from Louis Vuitton and Coach as I bought my first bags in the 90s. I’m at the point I’m not buying new anymore. I’m only shopping Japanese resellers, thrift stores, and Etsy. Thanks for being honest and upfront this is why I like your channel so much.

    Really glad you and Scotti are talking about this. I hope Coach is paying attention and I would love to hear their response to these concerns. Macro scale - I worry that this is something happening with other luxury brands too. Tanner Leatherstein has been exposing this with some really high end luxury brands that charge even more. Ugh.

    Wonderful video…..about 6-7 yrs ago I helped a vintage coach loving client purchase 3 bags…..we found a mint Willis bag for $25, a legacy bag for $50 and a stewardess for $75… these were all expensive back in their day, but my client explained, it was exciting to save for such a quality bag…and to look through the great little catalogues they used to send out and pick out a new bag…..yes they did come out with new styles and designs back then but ALL of them were quality leather, hardware and THAT is why they still look beautiful today! …she will not buy any of their bags today she said she can tell they are just not the same quality, craftsmanship and are almost she said leaning towards looking fake……snap up those vintage ones she said😃

    I did see Scottilicious video prior and yes I agree it’s not good with the recycled leather. Both of your videos are great topics. I think we all saw the article (possibly) of Coach wanting to enter into the higher pricing category. I am loving the full grain /smooth box leathers of the Coach Bandit and Sammy and own them so I think it’s possible they are trying to generate two creative directions in store by introducing the recycled leather at a standard Coach price and a higher end price tag with the full grain leather, as I mentioned above but I am unsure. Thanks so much for the video Caleb, I appreciate it and great topic! Looking forward to another this week! 🤗

      Hi Christine! I could totally see the two different directions within the brand, they've tried that before with the Poppy diffusion line. I wasn't a fan of the idea of the Coachtopia line because I disagree with the concept of creating a separate line that's supposedly "eco-friendly." Making a separate collection of bags (especially ones that use bonded leather, which last time I checked polyurethane/plastic isn't environmentally friendly) means that you're inherently producing more products/potential waste than if you just incorporated more eco-friendly practices to your main line. It's the same problem I have with the H&M Conscious Collection: H&M is making basic designs that they are selling as being "green," but are still selling similar products in their main line that don't have this label. Also, I just don't like the Coachtopia designs.

    • @CalebSnell
      @CalebSnell  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I completely agree with your points, Crystal. You're so right- instead of making a diffusion line, just concentrate those efforts to improve the original line.

    I’m personally on a Coach buying break because of the direction I see them going. I’ve been buying Coach on and off since the late 1990s. The only bag I have bought in the last year that I love is the Bandit Crossbody and it is full grain leather according to the stamp on it. I thought when they introduced the Bandit line , it meant they were going in a more luxe direction. Sadly it’s not looking that way. I think they are having an identity crisis as to who their target client should be. Is it the older peeps like us who remember the good old days of Coach or the influencer raised generation who view fashion as in the moment and exciting for like a minute until the next new shiny thing comes along?

    • @CalebSnell

      Hi Sarah! I'm kind of on the same boat as far as going on a Coach buying break as well. And I agree- I was excited with additions like the Bandit and Studio bags that they'd be going in a new direction- and here we are with disappointing quality. Hopefully they figure out what their identity is soon, because it's a real shame.

    Why would we believe otherwise when their stuff is constantly marked down? There’s always a flash sale. They’re clearly trying to stay in their target price point and have to adapt their materials to do so. Personally, I think the designs are a marked improvement over the canvas nonsense from 10-15 years ago, with intentional throwbacks to the classic turn lock, boxy shapes and neutral colors they were famous for. I think of it as eco-friendly leather and feel perfectly fine walking out of the store with a classic looking bag that I bought for $150-$300. I don’t think that’s overpriced in today’s inflated market and it’s a MUCH better value than the $5K LV bags every suburban mom sports at Target. I think their pebbled leather still looks great, not sure if that’s bonded or not.

    • @CalebSnell

    I pulled out my 2004 soho. I cant get out of it! I love it. The leather is thick and heavy and buttery. I am very picky now when I purchase anything. It needs to be something that I can wear for many years period pass me time less and what I don't like about coach in the past is they would update to style and then that style becomes irrelevant very quickly. For a long time they were always just on trend. And I was wasting so much money. Adjust purchase to soft tabby. I hope That style stays with me for a long time. The first time I saw the new sohos I really liked it. I didn't think it looked cheap whatsoever.... And I had fakes back in the day.

    So shocked, and impressed, that you knew the year the style was released and they didn't! Okay, so $500 in 2007 is about $750 in 2023, says the inflation calculator. So if Coach released those thick leather style bags today, I wonder would people want to buy them? I'm new to this and see the love for the old Coach, and while I appreciate the quality of the leather, the styles look a little too rustic / cowboy for me (safe space). I prefer sleeker looks like Sammy Top Handle. But there are lots of lovers of Coach vintage, so maybe they could still sell those at that price. But then, Coach Vintage lovers are used to paying less than $300 on the 2nd hand market, so would they be willing to pay $750 for a new one? Anyway, I also thought using scraps was how Coachtopia would be made. What a shame that it's not. I'm glad they are at least saying it explicitly in their description rather than being real vague with "genuine leather".

    I also have the same legacy bag (smaller size). I will never get rid of it! I love all my vintage glovetanned leather bags from Coach, to. I currently only buy bags from the 1941 line because they are made of the luxe glovetanned leather. Although the glovetanned leather of today is not as thick and rich as the 80's and 90's glovetanned. I think you can say the same about all brands across the board. Quality has decreased, but prices increase.

    It is so refreshing to find someone who knows Coach history. I lived through the 80s and 90s and early 20s better quality leather. There is a Manager who worked at the Coach store in Orlando, Fl who was with the company for like almost 40 years. She is the reason I was going into that store. She is like the google of Coach history. With Coach I use to like the leather but a lot of the bags within the past decade are more about the aesthetics. I was one of those people back in the day who wanted more creative designs but I guess I got what I asked at the expense of quality materials. Unfortunately, I took the OG bags with the better materials for granted and sold a lot thinking I was going to get designs that match my creativity. Instead, I got cute designs with poor quality materials. Ugh. I regret selling my older Coach bags…

    Ok first of all, how have I not come across your channel before?! Love this content and I 💯% agree with you! Bonded leather is not what drew me to coach. I buy coach because I love the styles but more importantly, I TRUST the quality of the materials and transparency of the product descriptions. I feel like it took too much time for me to really uncover what kind of leather Coachtopia bags were and that was a huge turn off.
    I still love the brand but if this is the direction they’re going in, I’m super glad I bought and kept all of my other bags! I’m late to coach and didn’t start buying bags in general until 2017 but 2018 is my favorite coach era and I still buy bags from this time period. I love all the rogues, a few discontinued styles and the collaborations from that time and these are the most treasured pieces in my collection.

    Glove Tanned leather is basically chrome tanned leather. They call it glove tanned because the hides need to be handled with gloves due to the chemicals that chrome requires. Most luxury brand use it because of its scratch and water resistance.

YASSSS my thoughts exactly. I bought one and returned it. The “leather” felt like plastic and the jacquard is actually made from recycled plastic bottles 😳. I just bought a preloved Coach Mercer 30 from 2017, a few years before they shifted to super embossed pebbled leather, which imo, is when they started their decline to this bonded leather madness.
    I read a comment somewhere about how coach used to have a mission/quality statement on their site stating how their leather selection was in the top 20% of leathers and that's what they used for all their goods. Now they barely tell us what kind of leather it is, just the vaguest descriptions

    Interesting. I started with Coach as well. You cannot beat the vintage stuff for style and durability. I’ve thrown legacy pieces in the washing machine and they come out fine. I have a sling pack from Hawaii that’s 15 years old. It’s indestructible but I wish the dang strap came off!! I’d have used that strap on other bags.
    I do wonder if creating bonded leather is even worse for the environment than using leather. My daughter’s vegetarian, she switched back to leather bags when she discovered how harmful pleather is.

    • @CalebSnell
      @CalebSnell  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Katie! I 100% agree- new Coach doesn't hold a candle to the vintage Coach we grew up with. And I agree- so many bags from that era had unremovable straps, and it drove me crazy! I'm glad design houses are coming around to the idea of removeable straps finally. I do think the bonded leather will be worse for the enviroment than just regular leather. But only time will tell for sure.

However BONDED leather is rubbish, literally scraps bonded together with glue. What grinds me more with coach is that they don't disclose on the website where they make their products. I have been a Coach customer for nearly 30 years, following in the footsteps of my mom, who carried them exclusively from the time I was in diapers--she always bragged about the quality because her original, which she carried my diapers in, although beaten and scarred from use, was a sturdy of a bag as it was on Day 1. For reference, I'm 48! They have touted glove-tanned leather since their inception in the 1940s. It is not the same as bonded leather. It is actually full-grain leather tanned in such a way that the colors don't fade when, say, exposed to water. But you're not lying about the shit quality they have gone to! It was all over when their corporation sold in the early 2000s, i.e. when the logo fabric bags went into production. WHY would I spend the same money for a fabric purse vs a thick beautiful leather one that, if I want it to, will literally last for decades?! Another change at that time was the addition of fabric lining in their leather bags. I have long suspected this was done to camoflage a shift to thinner leather. My 1st 2 Coach bags (in the mid-late 90s), and all my mom's before then, were the back of the external leather inside. My all time favorite one is 11 years old, and I still keep it in my rotation of in-use bags. Every time I get it back out and carry it, it's like a new purse all over again! Although lined, the lining is very thick and much more durable than many of their linings, and of course, it's the THICK, beautiful leather. 11 years down the road and it STILL smells like new leather! And that is what you should expect from a Coach bag! All the shifts to pebble leather, murano leather, etc are just a cheapening of the product that they built their reputation on. I always shop them when shopping for a new bag, but honestly they don't appeal much to me anymore. They target a younger demographic than me, and that's fine they can do them, but it is women of a certain age and up who actually practice brand loyalty and not whatever is trendy. My last 2 new bags were leather Dooneys and their quality is still the same as a Dooney I had in the 90s (prior to my switch to Coach). Coach has really gone to shit and it's sad to me, b/c over the years I have spent thousands on theri gorgeous THICK leather bags. Rant over!

    I am not actually mad about the bonded leather. It is to me recycled, same as plastics are. However I wish they would re-enter the lux market as well. Since the lux market has significantly bumped their way into 1-2k bags, I wish they would remake to the same standards their 1980s-90’s thick bags and price them accordingly. You have gen Xers like me who bought their seriously vintage bags new back in the day and would pay for it, and it could be a gateway for younger/newer customers too. Those thick leather outer/raw suede inside bags were 400-600 back in the day, they could be double to triple that now and I’d pay. Still a bargain for todays standards.

    I am sticking with 1980's and 90's Coach - the leather is stunning! I avoid the signature and y2k styles as the quality just isn't there IMHO.

      Smart idea- the vintage pieces are built like tanks!

    I love my coach bags & ya know if they are using 'faux leather', good for them, I think it's wonderful, but they need to make it known so they don't get slammed for 'false advertising'. The prices are still much more attainable than some of the other labels like LV, Chanel, etc., but yes, make it known, 'own it', they'll be more embarrassed than if it comes out later that they were lying to us.

      I agree- there needs to be more transparency when it comes to the materials. And you're so right- "own it!" 😃

    What’s a good leather bag you recommend that’s in the price range of coach?

      I'm glad you asked! I actually have a video coming out tomorrow with a list of mid-range bags!

      @@CalebSnell can’t wait! Thank you for responding! I bought myself the Carter 28 coach as my birthday gift. I’m excited! But I also wanna expand my list for good quality and affordable bags!

    OMG. Do not get me started. It was bad enough when production was moved out of the US and Central America.. I recently started to look into the brand again and.. what is up with replacing two straps on the Hudson backpacks with weak magnets? The straps are now decorative. The point of straps on a bag is to ensure the bag STAYS closed. The materials weren't that great either.. Coach needs a wakeup call.

      I’m so sorry to hear about what happened to your backpack! And I agree coach does need a little bit of a wake up call! I hope you’re having a great week!
