This game had an extremely hardcore following back in the day. Kind of the Dark Souls of racing, brutal track design and insane speed. Wasn't that hard to win, but there was always ways to improve racing lines and negotiate barriers. Plus it's smoothness was the envy of the racing genre at a time when racing controls were typically so bad. I would also add it's a pretty strong contender for most technically impressive 3D graphics on the PSX, absolutely stunning it was.
15 years later... only just now noticed the 'red bull' billboard was supposed to be a thing. Also: Only drank Red Bull under 'social pressure' for shots. Guess it worked on us.
There are analog controls. Steering wheels, which are not expensive ( and better than the dual shock for wipeout), and then there is the NEGCON controller, which is easily the best analog controller of all time. MAEs turning very smooth
+Lee Robson Exactly. Once you learned how to really use it, the control NeGcon could provide was absolutely fantastic! I actually still have one, even though my PS1 died years ago.
Wipeout 2097 is pretty forgiving compared to the original Wipeout, so I do prefer it as I don't have a huge amount of patience and get frustrated easily with difficult games. Still tricky though! Isn't this game also on the N64 or is Wipeout 64 entirely different? Look forward to your next review. Congrats on hitting 400 subs. I think you deserve a drink of red bull to celebrate.
It's basically its own game, but similar since it was only set a year later than 2097. The biggest difference I can see is that it foregoes digital all together and introduces analogue controls. I do own it, so I'll review it one day lol. Thanks by the way, I shall probably have to. Although I am living the full-time student life at the moment, so Red Bull is more or less a given.
+Lord Maximus The original only had two difficulty settings though. 2097 had four and Phantom is definitely faster than anything the original could offer. Plus hitting the sidewalls in the original was just too unforgiving, you had to be pretty good to have nice gaming experience.
Nice one man, loved this release back in the day, it improved everything that brought down the 1st Wipeout game. You might wanna check out Quantum Redshift for the Original Xbox, it's an amazing game in it's own right, should be able to get it dirt cheap too :) Great review mate!
I anyone wants the same thing, except - completely improved, in current year...get ballisticNG on steam. It's hard as balls but that's just normal. Get it. It's the best.
+Odin's Playground Ha, I don't mind a bit of VB. That was actually a Millers box (American beer, the horror!) which I used for years to store my controllers. Eventually I upgraded to a plastic box with a lid from Woolies for ten bucks. A very luxurious upgrade!
Great review! Should have more views, though... Subbed! Anyway... which WipEout game is the best? I have a few, but I don't know which one to play! WipEout 2097? WipEout 3: Special Edition? WipEout Pure? WipEout Fusion? WipEout Pulse on PSP/PS2? WipEout HD Fury? Or WipEout 2048?
Best visual design - Wip3out SE. Best physics/handling style: WipEout 2097. Best soundtrack: Debatable between WipEout, WipEout 2097, and Wip3out. Best multiplayer: Omega Collection. My personal ratings of the wipEouts from best to worst are: WipEout 2097 Wip3out SE Wip3out Omega Collection (HD and 2048 combined in one game) WipEout Pure WipEout Fusion WipEout Pulse.
negcon controller or steering wheels were perfect for this game, far superior to dualshock.. Also, XL is smoother than 2097 and the foatiness is different.
Wipeout XL and 2097 play very differently. The physics are more floaty and touchy on 2097, and the framerate is noticeably slower. It's very smooth in XL.
Fluke, The Chemical Brothers, Daft Punk and The Prodigy rocked in this.
Would been amazing with Aphex Twin

The original playstation version had double airbrakes each side, making cornering easier than later versions
I always loved the wipeout games for their pure feeling of speed. They always remind me of F-zero.
Also, congratulations on over 400 subs now.
Thanks Dharma :D And I totally agree! I was going to slip in a reference actually, the power zones looks fairly similar to each other too.
I started on the original.
Mastered this one.
Still playing to this day on the Omega Collection
This
Is
My
Jam
I love this, it feels like a Scott the Woz video and I love that
If you put your copy in a CD player it has the entire soundtrack included. ;)
I now know what's going to be permanently in my cars CD player then...
Its was all about the firestarter soundtrack

Hey man, good review and nicely presented.
MrThunderwing Thanks man!

Analog controls do work if you have a NeGcon. It's the best way to play it.
+Lee Robson
I wish I had one :'(

A large E was important
Yeah a nother video of my favorite youtuber :)
No problem! Thanks for watching :)
I smoked a lot of green, drank a lot of RedBull playing Wipeout 2097 when this came out.
This game was nails, but brilliant fun

The only way to play was with a link lead. Hours of fun!
I loved this game
Great work! :)
+Lisa Warner Thanks Lisa

Nice acting De Niro

Lol, such an Aussie in this mid-review skit. Shorts, bare feet and a 24 pack of beer in the background, although not VB.

Wip3out is my personal favourite on PS1. HD Fury was pretty good too!
for me i have 2 runner-ups and a winner the 2 runner-ups are wipeout HD fury and wipeout 3 and the winner for me is wipeout fusion
The original (with its brutal collision dynamics), 64 and Fusion are the 3 weakest imo
Nah. Wipeout 64 is brilliant.

when i heard the loughing like a idiot i remembered i just played the game today and looked into the manuals xD i loved it
whats the best platform version of the game?
Any on any of the PlayStations. I wasn't a fan of (what I've played) on the N64.
All the ps1 versions. Wo64 is great with the asciiwheel, makes it feel like CL
Wipeout XL and 2097 play very differently. The physics are more floaty and touchy on 2097, and the framerate is noticeably slower. It's very smooth in XL.
Not sure about the difference in physics, but the framerate is likely smoother in XL because it's an NTSC release (while 2097 is PAL).
Yes, correct, but it is very noticeable, creating a better game. The physics are strangely quite different from wo1-wo3. All more floaty more touchy
What about wipeout specail edition vs Xl?
this game looks much better from inboard than this.
Your gamma is way off. w'O"2097 is the best game ever btw.
