    Wipeout 3 SE is one of the greatest game content packages of all time.

    The last good wipeout after his big brother (2097) is from wipeout fusion that the problems started arriving. I have never rediscovered the driving sensations of the first 3 wiepouts which are unrivaled for me.

    • @rocspanial7575
      @rocspanial7575 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      Its similar for me. While I still had lots of fun with the later games (even Fusion), they never quite captuered the essence of the first three games.
      I recently started playing BallisticNG and its pretty much oldshool-wipeout, but perfect in every way! I´ve been unsure about buying the game for years, mostly because of the PS1-Style graphics, but it turned out the graphics bothered me for exactly 5 seconds. Its pure bliss for any Wipeout fan. And while its already a great package by itself, its also easily modable. You can simply add ships, tracks, etc. from the workshop with a single click or drop your own MP3s in the games music folder.
      Also a blast on Steam Deck

    Special Edition does go for silly money on eBay now, well over £100. But strangely, if you want the double pack of it which came with Destruction Derby 2, it's only £7. There must be some real bizarre demand for the stand alone version.

    3 was my first contact with the series... indeed the game that got me back to gaming (after having sold my Amiga back in 1992). Found a copy of wip3out in the bargain bin of a newly opened supermarket in the spring of 2002. Had borrowed a friend's PS1 to play Doom and Rayman, wanted variety... and boy, did I get it in wip3out!

  • @dancoulson6579
    @dancoulson6579 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    As a child, in the early 2000s, I was absolutely obsessed with this game. (I would have been age 10 at the release)
    The graphic design, the way it made Wipeout _believable_ in my eyes, the professionalism of it. A game made perfectly to my tastes.
    The soundtrack was amazing too.
    For me, it was the little things which made it feel more professional - The fact that ships didn't blow up, but rather had their AG systems fail and drop to the floor in an undramatic way.
    No silly, childish, bouncing missiles off barriers. Your missile made a B-line for the craft it was locked on to. If something else was in that path, tough luck - You missed, and wasted a missile.
    No ridiculous city-block levelling explosions. Missiles, rockets, and mines were proportionally sized ordinance. Enough to cause damage to craft without causing mass destruction to the surrounding environment.
    No stupid loop-de-loop or mag-lock track sections - You were responsible for the pitch of your craft. Manage it poorly and suffer the consequences. Master it and be rewarded with a sublime floaty experience.
    None of that 'absorbing weapon energy' nonsense. If you didn't want a weapon, you _discarded_ it. Use it or lose it. If you need more shield energy, wait until the pit lane, or use an energy drain ( _not_ a leech beam).
    No barrel-roll crap either. Seriously... Barrel rolls? In wipeout? How juvenile... If you wanted a boost, you had the option of using hyper-thrust at the cost of shield energy.
    Yup. This was the pinnacle of Wipeout. Nothing since has come even remotely close to it's level of perfection.

    Fantastic video honestly. WipEout 3 was among the first games I ever played on the original PS back in 98' because before I ever got my first games I collected Demo discs. (I missed getting those PS magazines) This game along with some others introduced me to the power& awesomeness of playstation, the PAL demo discs in the EU had an awesome jungle sound track in the mid to late 90's. This almost complemented the futuristic feel of wipeout on the demo which it played only 1 track on the wipEout 3 ost called 'Control' awesome track love it to this day.

    WipeOut 2097 and 3SE r the 2 games that basically stole every spare moment of My Early to Mid 20's. (and SoulBlade + Teken 3 also)
    I say "Stole" but what I really mean is I Eagerly OFFERED every available moment to the Gods of Pure Speed + The Quest for The perfect Racing Line !
    At the Expense of Relationships, Work + more ... Given the Opportunity, Id Gladly do it all over again.
    Im always amazed to see Ppl playing it with the "Behind the Vehicle" view, as Control was more Precise using the "Front Bumper" view. IMHO
    My Excitement for the release of W.O. Fusion on PS2 was comparable to an Addict learning their Favourite Drug Had been Refined + Perfected and was now 100 X Stronger + Completely Safe to Use - Getting My Grubby Paws on it consumed My Life for a while. Imagine My disappointment upon that 1st play, when it felt like some sluggish Old speedboat racing game, not at All like the Ultra Crisp, Uber Responsive WipeOut Games that came before it on the PS1 ... The Speed was there, the Controls / Handling just SUCKED ...
    I felt betrayed by Psygnosis for allowing a Dev Studio that didnt appear to have ever played the previous games, to Develop it ...
    Bitter + Betrayed doesnt come close to describing how I felt after W.O. Fusion ... So Disillusioned, that I Gave it away about a month after buying it + I had NO Interest in any of the newer Releases. I never even tried W.O. Pure ... I continued playing W.O. 3SE on My Ps2 until the day My PS2 died.
    WipeOut Ultimate on PS4 was an Almost worthy successor, but it still felt more like Speedboats on a river, than the Anti-Gravity Racing I had Offered My 20s (and My Soul) to ...
    Thanx for Ur great Review Series on these True Classics - It was a Nostalgic trip down Memory lane.

    Getting old games look decent using the original hardware (for a review video) is possible, though rather cumbersome. In my case, I have to connect my PS1 to an HDMI converter, from which I capture my gameplay using an Elgato 4K60 S+. Since my converter is too stupid to get the aspect ratio right, I then fix my recordings via HandBrake, in which you can crop out the black lines of the console's video output and squeeze the image back to 4:3 (1440x1080 for a 1080p resolution). The app also lets you improve the sharpness of the image via filters, which is recommendable, since what you can get out of composite to HDMI converters can be quite blurry. The end results cannot be compared with emulators, but it should give you the best idea of how the games looked back in the CRT era 😉.

    Agatha Christie novel incoming, but WipEout just has such a special place in my heart, and I love seeing recent videos about it:
    I'm right there with you, 3 is still the best of the original trilogy. However, as of recently, 2097 has gotten ever closer to that spot for me. I've played Wip3out for more than 20 years at this point, and while it's a game packed to the brim with features and content, I really haven't taken a liking to the inclusion of the Hyperthrust system over a simple turbo pickup. The reason is simple; it can be abused to shreds, and it becomes the go-to mechanic quickly.
    If you know the specific spots, and if used and timed correctly, a simple tap of the hyperthrust button will immediately speed your craft up, allowing you to not only get ahead of the competition early and easily, but you will also be able to go out of bounds and take shortcuts without being penalized by the rescue drone. Soon, this becomes the default approach.
    Notable stages where this can be abused is on the likes of Porto Kora, P-Mar Project, Terramax and Gare d'Europa. Stages, that have relatively big jumps, where you do can get a shortcut in, or speed on ahead on a long straight, without continuously draining your shield.
    You can argue that 2097 kinda had this too, but while you had to have a pickup in your reserve, 3 allowed you to do it at all times, even when barely above the 25% shield threshold.
    That is literally my only issue with this game. Everything else about 3 was perfect. The graphics, the artstyle, the music, the controls, and how everything just melted together in perfect tandem to create one of the best PS1 games of all time in my book, right alongside the Oddworlds, the Spyros an the Tekkens.

    Great review! Man, I spent a lot of time on this game, grinding the tournaments to light up all those progress chips. But, I think I remember worrying at the time that they weren't going to top this version and make any more! By the way, the name of one of those acts on the (incredibly good) soundtrack, is Underworld, not 'Underground'!!

    To your point of poor sales, I remember seeing this game on the shelf as a kid, but hardly remember seeing any promo or marketing for it at the time and this was right after WipEout 64 released. I almost passed it up thinking it was something completely different. Still have my original copy to this day, and so glad I took a chance on it as it's my favorite in the series as well.

    Uh... the walls in Wip3out actually give you a speed boost. It's in the manual. Part of the strategy is timing your turn so you skim the wall. It also has the added benefit of pulling you into the turn.

    • @thereviewden
      @thereviewden  ปีที่แล้ว

      IF you skim them, anything more than that is a crash.

    • @mxrclxst

      @@thereviewden true, but even then, the threshold was pretty generous. you'd have to really slam into the wall and be way off the line to mess it up. basically, even a moderately good player can capitalize on the wall speed boost.

    I know others have said to Emulate, just one note from someone who owns BOTH copies, complete in box.
    The original Wip3out has DRM, which crashes the game when you cross the starting line.
    I have a patch applied on one of my emulators, but the weapon pads graphically are broken, being constantly grey, but work fine.
    Wip3out:SE doesn't and should be the go to, to emulate, if just for a lack of DRM.
    But the Extra courses from older games, prototypes and oval courses should cinch SE as THE definitive version to get.

    How did Psygnosis find the performance for wip3out... I'll never know. That game looks good *today* and in fact all the PS1 Wipeout games did, PS1 games often showed so many graphical glitches and strangeness but Psygnosis seemed to produce a product that bucked the trend.

      A lot of Sony games were developed using their in house performance analyser which helped the development of the original Gran Tourismo. I’m sure the Sony equivalent to the N64’s wave race used it too. Can’t remember the name of that game though!

    Wip3out has a great reinvention path, it felt like a *racing* game what with the 3D cockpit as well. Wipeout HD should have taken more cues from this game, hypethrust was a great trade off that was copied IRL in Formula E and Formula 1
