Trent Reznor is the one who basically "discovered" Marilyn Manson... And Marilyn Manson's early albums, although great in their own right, where heavily influenced by NIN.
@@synisterintent I don't think it's right. The lyrics are more about the powers that be and soon after the release of this album Trent Reznor will go on and produce Marilyn Manson's first album... They'd later have a fallout but I really don't think that song is about Marilyn Manson.
@@synisterintent But I'm not sure about it either. It's just that the chronology does not add up for me. But if you have some proof (an interview or something like that), I'll stand corrected :D
Masterpiece album. When I saw them on tour for this album, they opened up with this song. It was 1994 at maple leaf gardens. The entire show is on TH-cam of NIN’s set. The greatest show I’ve ever seen in my life. And the best part was you also had Marilyn Manson and the Jim Rose Circus Sideshow open for them. I became a massive Manson fan after this show. They blew me away. Great reaction man. :)
That’s hilarious... I was at the same exact show!!! I was just about to leave a comment about it when I saw yours. I was 14 years old and it was the first concert I ever went to without my parents. What are the chances right?!
I saw them all that same year at the Seattle Center Arena. Great show. Also saw NIN with David Bowie at the Tacoma Dome. A couple of my favorite shows ever.
All I can say is you need to sit down and listen to this album from start to finish. The way the songs are assembled and flow into each other is part of the true beauty of it.
It is a perfect picture, as an album, of someone literally destroying them self. I remember when this came out when I was sixteen, and my head exploded.
My first concert was NIN in the sixth grade 1994 in the Summit Houston, TX. Trent basically brought Manson up to the main stream music and then they had a big falling out. If you really want your mind blown check out “And all that could have been” of the album Still!!
You will find a young Marilyn Manson in the Nine Inch Nails video for Gave Up. Which was filmed in the house that the Manson family killed Sharon Tate in... Not sure if you know who Ghostemane is but his new album is sounding an awful lot like 90s Nine Inch Nails and all these young kids think it’s something new he came up with all on his own
yeah you can feel the influence from Reznor’s music on ghostemanes album, as well as influence from bands like death grips. seems the industrial hip hop of the last decade has a common inspiration
Your recations remind me of my own first rections to NIN 20 years ago. Thank you for being the closest thing I can get to hearing them again for the first time.
This is such a perfect song to start the album off with, cause it does everything to let you know what it's about. It introduces the two "characters" Trent and The Machine, which represented his depression and despair, and the idea is that he had all these unhealthy coping mechanisms that the machine would make him act out. So if you read the lyrics, this whole thing is the Machine introducing itself.
Thank you for reacting to some of his best songs!!! I don't recommend "Closer" or "Head Like A Hole" perhaps selfishly because they were completely overplayed on the radio, but also because his OTHER songs are SO GOOD! Check out: Reptile, Heresy, Something I Can Never Have, Ruiner, Kinda I Want To, Sin, March Of The Pigs, and basically almost everything from The Downward Spiral or Pretty Hate Machine.
Each song trent reznor does is a masterpiece in itself. From past to the most recent stuff. He is one of those one of a kind individuals who shows up once in a lifetime.
I’d love to see you react to this whole album! It’s so much more powerful if you hear them together in order. It tells a story. Great review, fun to watch, thanks!
I enjoyed and agree with much of your analysis. You dodged the subterfuge and got to the heart of the matter. This song is about drug abuse. Most people don't see it. It is a story point in the album. Trent got clean sometime in the late 90's with the help of David Bowie. If you ever wonder why Trent is so attached to and seemly tied into David Bowie it is for that reason. Mr. Bowie saved Mr. Reznor.
The Downward Spiral and The Fragile are both concept albums that have a lot to do with drug use because Trent was dealing with heroin addiction and alcoholism at the same time that he wrote them. The Downward Spiral is, as the name clearly implies, about someone who is on their downward spiral into drug use and other forms of self destruction (coming after Pretty Hate Machine which is mostly about losing your youthful ideals and naivety, and Broken which is about how one feels after that happens), and The Fragile is about someone who has hit rock bottom. Trent spent 5 years touring, then in rehab and sobering up after that album and then came back with With Teeth.. which is about a lot of things but has some themes about recovery and resilience, as well as the struggles that go along with that.
and for me... I always personally connected most of Trent's songs to heartbreak, and romantic and religious disillusionment, because I never struggled with drug addiction. Many of his songs could be easily interpreted many different ways to apply to whatever it is you yourself are struggling with.
Some other good NIN songs (there are so goddamn many of them they're all great, but these are some that I think would make good videos): Somewhat Damaged, The Wretched, Only, Sin, Starfuckers Inc, The Big Come Down, And All That Could Have Been (the song not the album), Big Man With a Gun, The Becoming, Happiness in Slavery, Burn, Wish, Sunspots, Right Where it Belongs, Underneath it All, Leaving Hope, okay I'll stop now there are so many amazing NIN songs...
Thank you for the reaction. Great pic and call out on the Manson influence. Trent kinda found Manson and they wrote music together, kinda, under NIN for the Broken album. Though, Trent has long separated himself from Manson as Trent sobered up. Would love to see a reaction of some of their live music from the Vevo Tension tour 2013. March of pigs would be great.
Manson was actually part of the crew for Downward Spiral. I remember watching some of the "making of" footage and seeing him there. (also interestingly, this entire album was recorded in the house where the Charles Manson murders occurred)
i think you may have mixed it up with the Broken LP. that video of Gave Up (i always get the song title mixed up with Wish because he says wish a lot in Gave Up) has MM playing guitar and background vocals.
@@AltCTRLF8 You're right they worked together on the Broken LP after meeting each other in 1989. They collaborated after that as well. Although I think the footage I saw was moreso Manson just being there in the studio for Downward Spiral, so I was incorrect there. Trent's crew actually spent weeks with Manson around the same time to redo Portrait of a Manson family which was later renamed to Portrait of an American Family due to issues Interscope records had with references to Charles Manson (following on the heels of Guns N' Roses putting a Charles Manson song hidden on their Spaghetti Incident album.). At that point forward Trent was producing Manson's albums under Nothing Records until the fallout....Trent later releasing the song StarF*ckers Inc about Manson. (which was actually the start of them repairing their relationship funnily enough)
Just another suggestion: look for lyric videos or pull up the lyrics before you start. Trent obviously layers on many many layers of noise over the melodies and lyrics and that's intentional - he wants his music to reveal itself slowly to the listener - but the songs hit so much harder if you know what the lyrics are.
This is one of their most abstract and heaviest (a big constast from A Warm Place and Hurt). This was my first album of theirs but I prefer Pretty Hate Machine, The Fragile and With Teeth
Yes, Trent is Mr. Self Destruct. His early days were frought with his own battles with drugs. His post 2000 music takes wider philosophic turns, except possibly "The Slip" which might have been his "slip"
I've got one tattoo. Mr. Self Destruct on my chest like a name tag. That album is has done so much for me in my life. Front to back i loved the downward spiral.
Reznor is Al Jorgensen Jr.. love the downward spiral.. Big bro i wanna see you react to some 1000mph shit. Double Tap or Fear is big business by MINISTRY
Classic album. All the tracks are amazing. The song Hurt was covered by Johnny Cash and is probably the only cover you will hear that is better than the original. My favourite track is Reptile
Manson was influenced by NIN. By the way trent also scored the quake 1 soundtrack which I highly recommend on your own time its a hellish, eerie and atmospheric experience.
Industrial. This genre is called industrial. If you like NIN you might also like Skinny Puppy, Ministry, KMFDM for starters. Ooh! And the Revolting Cocks.
I'm not trying to be edgy or anything but I've noticed a large boost of videos of blacks reacting to NiN music and it's always his work that they're least likely to connect with when he has work they possibly could.
Finally!!! a differrent song than closer
I hear you...finally
Trent Reznor is the one who basically "discovered" Marilyn Manson... And Marilyn Manson's early albums, although great in their own right, where heavily influenced by NIN.
Yep, he absolutely changed his entire sound to follow NIN after Smells Like Children and got massive when Reznor got on board. Not a coincidence.
Trent helped produce Manson's first few albums.
Not only that, but the track "Ruiner" on this specific album is about Marily Manson and how he felt betrayed by him.
@@synisterintent I don't think it's right. The lyrics are more about the powers that be and soon after the release of this album Trent Reznor will go on and produce Marilyn Manson's first album... They'd later have a fallout but I really don't think that song is about Marilyn Manson.

"This sounds like Manson"... you were close, just reverse it

When I was in middle school, I let one of my friends borrow this tape and he told me there was something wrong with the tape...
hahahahahahahahahahaha

My favorite NIN song. Also just incredibly insane to me it was the opening track of this album. Just hits u the hardest directly from the jump.
NIN influenced Manson a lot NIN even produced mansons first two records...
THEREE A REASON WHY NIN is in the Rock Hall Of Fame ;)
Yeah that 90s industrial scene had some cool stuff. Pretty crazy concept album here, ending with the classic track "Hurt".
The “weird noise” is a man being beaten by a cop...sped up.

Marilyn Manson sounds like NIN. Trent was Manson's inspiration and mentor.

Seeing someone hearing this song for the first time is such a thrill !
My fav record of all time.

The sampling at the beginning come from a George Lucas movie named
THX 1138.
Trent was inspired by the movie for sure.
its basically industrial metal. you should check out NIN-Wish if you haven't already..its my favorite
The story of the album Broken is badass. Gave Up was my fave

Lol this doesn't sound like Manson, Manson has tried his entire career unsuccessfully to sound like this.
Manson sounds like trent🤷♂️
It sounds like white noise a bit.
