I cannot believe that the tolerances are so close that this matters, BUT it worked for me. THANKS.

I’m gonna clean mine in a couple of days when the storm passes through. I’m glad I stumbled upon this. Because I’ve been having this problem with my car for two years as long as I’ve owned it. And I’ve changed the motor twice to no avail. So I just gave up and unplugged it. Sometimes mine open up on its own.

When I close my sunroof it won’t close all the way so I have to push it forward so it closes, does anyone had the same problem? I have the older version of the sunroof on a Golf 4 GTI 1999

Interesting. I'll try this on my mk4 soon. I recently re-skinned my headliner and after reassembly the moonroof didn't want to close. I discovered a temporary workaround that if I pressed the plastic louver thing down as the glass approached, it would close. I'm sharing this tip in case you need to shut it for an approaching rainshower.

Thank you very much for contributing to this discussion. VW MK4 owners now have three things to try when this happens:
      1. Algae and moss removal.
      2. Pulling the window forward as it's closing (another guy's solution).
      3. Pressing down on the plastic louver as it's closing (your solution).
Given this helpful info, someone, somewhere is bound to discover a permanent solution. Hopefully, that person will share it with us and once closed, we won't hesitate to open our moon roofs again. Thank you for sharing!

@@LawrencePina Glad I can help. I don't see moss on my glass liner but it could be hardening there. I wonder if wiping it with a rag with one spot of the rag soaked in spray silicone would soften that edge as well as kill and make the surface inhospitable to mould regrowth. I also have some Wet & Forget solution for killing moss on roofs and walkways. But I think silicone spray might do the trick and last longer than a moist rag. I have not tested this yet but this is the approach I'm considering.

hey there it didn,t work on mine but guess what????? i figure it was the lid just stuck all the way back, when this happens it doesnt allow the system to close completely.so while closing i pulled the lid forward with my fingers and boom.somehow you saved me a trip to the safelite,THANKS

Thank you! I hadn't thought of pulling the lid forward, but I can see how it might work. Your post will surely help others. It adds to the conversation and that's the whole point.

Thanks for your comment, after reading it I looked and sure enough the lid on mine was pushed all the way back. I used the end on a metal pail handle to fish it back up.

I noticed the other day my sunroof decided not to close on me and it made a really loud clunk sound when it finally did decide to work third time.
Hopefully your technique works for me!

I don't know what causes the loud clunk noise but mine does that every Spring as well. Hopefully, someone will investigate further and be kind enough to share what they find out. Cleaning will get the roof to close, and stay closed, solving the immediate problem, and it'll work again for a while, but obviously, there's something else going on. Good luck! Thanks for commenting. It really helps the channel.
