Rod/reel combo with fishing kit as an emergency setup th-cam.com/users/postUgkxntWMOZsO1Zfv-pdn_XuffEtNkTYAYu4Z recommend but started to use this every day. The rod is thick and seems durable. I keep it neatly tucked into a regular backpack all the time with my fishing gear, and can grab it anytime, put it on my back and go anywhere. I just read in another review that the rod length below the reel is adjustable as well, so I will try that too for even more portability. Probably the best setup I've ever owned. I lost the cap for the eyelets, but no big deal since I still have the black cloth sheath that came for the pole and I use that. Very portable and high quality.
Thank you so much for your videos! My boyfriend and I study them since we moved up the coast from you to Ocean Shores, WA. We caught some beautiful red tails today. Thank you! Thank you! Keep them coming!
I went out surf perch fishing for the first time yesterday at Winchester bay and I had luck with just casting out far past the waves letting the bait sit on bottom and I just set my rod on a holder in the sand. It was easier for me to tell if the fish was biting. I caught 5 I just fished for 1 hour. Thanks for showing the rig set up. Great video.
I was turned on to the same worms at a local bait shop as soon as I crossed into the southern border of Oregon. WOW what a miracle day I had of fishing. It was early July and I was surf fishing in Reedsport area near a jetty I believe. It was literally every single cast I landed a red tail!
Been surf fishing for about 55 years, but your vids have re-inspired my surf fishing inner drive. I can remember tripple doubles with my buddy. I'm back in the game, THANK YOU PK! Last weekend at Seaside didn't yield any perch, but I did manage a limit of Razors and a 6" Dungy. Hope to rip some lips soon.
Hey Marlin have you made it out to try this type of fishing? I live in St Helen’s OR and very close to Seaside. Definitely want to try this but unsure where to go.
Going surf fishing for fist time next weekend, I know this video is old just wanted to say thanks for the advice keep up the good work. I appreciate you!
Hey there, brother. One angler to another, you really should try and get a fishing show. I love your excitement, knowledge, and your commentary is excellent.
I’m glad I took your advice and bought the Tourney Trail iM8 months ago while they were still available. It’s and excellent rod for the money. The only change I made was to drill out the butt end of the rod and add three 1/2oz weights to better balance the rod.
Hey PK nice tip about the strap around the waders never knew what that was for until now! Just bought some waders lately and used them about 3 times but I will use the strap!
Hey PK, I just wanted to thank you for putting out these awesome videos on fishing for surf perch in Oregon, and for answering a bunch of my questions in the comments. So, following your recommendations, I am (almost) completely set up with two rods and reels, and learned how to rig Hi/Lo and Carolina. Plus I got a couple of rooster tails, and a Lucky Craft minnow. I live at the beach in northern Oregon, and have gone out about 10 times and had an absolute blast, even though I'm still kind of debugging the process. But learning at such a fast pace is great fun. So is catching fish! Anyway, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!! I sincerely appreciate your help. Oh, also, my 86 year old mom has been enjoying your videos. Cheers.
That's awesome to hear! You can also try regular raw shrimp from the grocery store (size 71/90) and put a half on a carolina rig - remove the shells first. Works really well too. Tight lines.
@@oregonlife, could you please recommend a rig or two for fishing off of rocks in northern Oregon for rock fish, lingcod, and other groundfish. EDIT: Ah, I see you have some videos on lingcod, so I'll watch those and see what you're using.
Pk I’m heading to Gearhart this Saturday. Not the best weather but still going to give it a shot. Never tried any surf fishing before but your videos have got me super excited to try Taking my son and son-in-law
Hi George. Wow.. Saturday's swell has energy well over 4000, close to 5000 (7-10 foot swells). I consider 1000 energy to be my limit, and that's pretty dangerous enough already. Please, please be careful out there. Big storm all along the coast throughout the weekend. Stay safe, and stay good luck.
What a nice gift from the fishing gods! This might spoil you for your next trip. I'm heading over to the coast this coming week. Hoping for some of the same
Fish on! Holy cow! Great video again. Catching big red tail surf perch often doubles. Catches a triple!! He must have hit a school of bruiser perch. Oh my lord, fish on, holy cow!! Great commentary! Keep up the great work. I real love his conservation ethic. Only keep what you can use, leave them for future generations. In another video he showed how he bleeds the fish and kills them. I used to bonk my bottom fish on the head to stun them and then cut the gills to bleed them out to get blood out of the gills. Thanks
great enthusiasm, great video. Very clear directions about hook size, weight, reel, rod etc. Thanks a bunch man, I wish you continued fishing prosperity
I had a rod with smaller guides and it casted farther than others because the line wouldn't bow as much while casting. This beach is crazy wish I knew where it was.
First time red tail perch fishing today - Westport WA. Used a 9 foot IM6 Cabela's Pro Guide MH with 12 pound mono. Surf was pretty choppy but managed to catch 5 fish - exact set up as PK. Fun times!
Good video! I tried perch fishing for my first time yesterday for my birthday. I didn’t catch anything but I did save a guys truck before high tide took it. I was to tired to fish after that.
In MA 2 hooks is max, except for ice fishing, which 5 is max, a treble counts as one, a lure, jig or device with multiple trebles is 1 hook. I wish the state would allow for 3 hooks so I could set 2 poles out for bottom fishing while casting a 3rd.
Hey PK, where were you, Newport area? I fished in Gearhart on Sunday. Camo Gulf Worms on a crappie rig. In coming tide. Only caught one small red tail. Still trying to figure things out.
Its a great day when you hit a school. Never had a triple, that was great to see. Man....I am bummed they discontinued that rod. I have been checking their website for the past month.
I lived in Brookings and some people think the fishing is better near a fresh water source. I used to fish in Northern Cal at the mouth of the Smith River. You can drive up the beach or I would paddle across from Ship Ashore. I’d you get there and there is a sea lion in the water watching you, just go home. They will follow you up and down the beach scaring the fish away. I use the same Gulp bait as this guy. The meat is a little mushy but it’s better if you never let the fish meat touch fresh water. Clean the fish in salt water. I only use the meat for tacos.
Great video as usual PK, I hope you and your family had a great Christmas and I look forward to heading out with you here soon in the future I wish you and your family a fantastic New Year.
Great video, that was a lot of fun to watch. I live in Oregon (Eugene) and have never fished the surf yet. I absolutely need to do that. Hi PK, I’m heading down to Astoria thus weekend and just wanted to know if redtails are biting at this time of the year. Wanted to do some fishing at Gearhart. Thanks🤙🏼
@@oregonlife well some rods have eye rings made from steel ,yes they can be cleaned but what about reels? those also can easly get rusty from the salt water and sea air ,i know that sea fishing reels are made for such purpose ,i tried using my fresh water reel one time and i can see some rusting that needed to be cleaned fast specially if it gets in the gears or on the bail etc
(For the Oregon coast) I started out with a Ultegra Ci4+ 14000 years ago, but soon discover that it was way overkill. I'm down to a size 3000 or 4000 and that works a lot better. You don't need heavy gear for surf fishing the Oregon coast. Keep it light but that's just me. Good luck.
Hey pk love your vids. Have you ever fished the beach at seaside for perch? I take my daughter there to razor clam and she loves fishing so i figures we could do both in the same day. If the seaside beach doesn't hold perch do you know any close to it or tillamook (we clam netarts too) that would? Thanks man! Your channels great subbed after the first vid i watched.

P.k I have never surf fished here in Oregon I was thinking of going tomorrow do you think it would be good time of the year to attempt
Yes. You can catch surf perch year round. Very important to check the swell report before you go. Good luck.
Hi PK, I’m heading down to Astoria thus weekend and just wanted to know if redtails are biting at this time of the year. Wanted to do some fishing at Gearhart. Thanks🤙🏼
Yup. They can be caught year round.
Allright! You had an excellent day.
are rods n reels made for sea fishing so they wont rust etc? how would i know if any of the rods i got at home are sea worthy?
Any fishing rods can be used for ocean fishing. Just rinse it out when you're done.
What do you think about the Shimano SpeedMaster XTC 14000 for surf fishing?
(For the Oregon coast) I started out with a Ultegra Ci4+ 14000 years ago, but soon discover that it was way overkill. I'm down to a size 3000 or 4000 and that works a lot better. You don't need heavy gear for surf fishing the Oregon coast. Keep it light but that's just me. Good luck.
What beach are you fishing
How long do you dry the worms for and how do you tell it's half way? Thanks and Merry Christmas :)
pk i know ur in oregon but what beach r you fishing?
What beaches would you say are best for surf perch? I tried over by the Peter Iredale at Fort Stevens but had no luck. Thanks.
I look for flat beaches. Seaside/Gearhart are decent spots up that way.
Thanks!
Live in Astoria thanks for info.
can anyone tell me the location of this video? please and thanks

What did do you use
What beaches in the Yachats/Waldport/Newport area would you recommend this time of year for surf perch?
Seal Rock, or Ona is good. Nye Beach is good too. Good luck.
+PK Yi thank you!
Lol you are better than me PK. I would have taken at least 4 home for the grease. They were too nice. East Coast Perch are not that wide.
Hello PK, I have a question? Are sand crab legal to fishing with in Oregon for surf perch?
Yes. Sand crabs are legal for bait in Oregon
Oregon Life Thank you for responding sir. I really appreciate that 👍🏾
Heading out to Seaside tomorrow, any hot beach area you can recommend would be awesome. 😃
I've fished in Gearhart and Sunset Beach with decent success. Good luck.
Do you fish these sandworms with a dropshot set up or a slide sinker?
I use 2 dropper loops on a HI-LO rig - weight on the bottom.
I live in Oregon and haven't been able to catch any surf perch. What beach in Oregon do you recommend for surf perch fishing.
Before, I've tried 35th street in LC and did OK. You can the Gleneden area too.
Ok sweet thank you!!! Just wondering what beach were you fishing at in this video.
Yes. I've fished the seaside/gearhart area before. Did ok. Cape Lookout is good as well as Barview Jetty, and Tierra Del Mar. Good luck.
Hey my friend . What size hooks do you use for surf perch ?
I use a #2 baitholder
Oregon Life is that Gamakatsu or Eagle Claw?
Nice video again, thanks PK
