This is by far, the best, most informative surf perch fishing video on TH-cam... explanations on behavior and tendencies when feeding and even snippets of what to look for in terms of water action for each species. Great job, thank you for this video!
Wow, another video of yours where I stopped what I was doing (eating crab, in this case. Not much a Viet girl will stop eating crab for 😂) to sign in just to like and comment. I grew up crabbing but am just getting into fishing. Finally caught my first perch a few weeks ago, caught some today, I’m obsessed. There was so much good info in this video!! Thanks again!
Dear Ish. I have watched many of your perch fishing u tube videos. I am very thankful of you for sharing your knowledge of gear and tech for catching surf perch. Would you be so kind as to share that place where you caught all those perch with the perch whisperer.
Great video! I’m about to get into to surf perch fishing.. I’m taking a trip up north and going to give it a shot! Lots of good info thanks for sharing!
Awesome video!!! Nice fish!!! Awesome channel you have!!! We liked and subscribed!!! Hi from Down Under Perth, Western Australia!!! Take care and tight lines!!!
This is was a crazy well presented video. Great info, audio was on point even though the PW wasn't mic'd up, nice supplemental info bar at the bottom, and y'all caught hella fish. Really well done.
thx P, the mic i run on my GoPros is the single best gear investment i've made. crazy small with crazy good pick up. for anyone reading this, associate link in the description, trust me it's the real deal.
also, yes! i've been meaning to run a pop-up info bar for awhile, it just takes forever to animate it. now that i have the templates done i'll include them moving forward, especially product reviews.
real interested in your vids bro. do you take out viewers, especially first-timers like me, beach/surf fishing. i have the gear for the most part. i’d definitely be interested in a “fishing instruction/tour.” i don’t really have anyone to show me to fish or have ever had anyone to show me how to fish. thanks bro. keep up the great work
+All Action Pack 9'6" G-Rod Pro Striper (MSRP $410) with a Shimano Sustain FI 5000 (MSRP $310). My guess is Marlon also goes after stripers with that setup, not just perch haha.
I guess im asking randomly but does anyone know of a method to log back into an instagram account? I was dumb lost my login password. I would love any assistance you can give me.
@Randall Sam thanks so much for your reply. I got to the site through google and Im trying it out now. I see it takes a while so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
Great video! How i wish I have seen you video before going on my first fishing trip. When are you located at if you dont mind me asking? How big are the waves?
Nice vid man! I know you're not going to disclose the fishing spot but I would love to run into the perch whisperer and pick his brain. Socal or norcal?
Awesome video, Ish. Keep it coming. Wish I was there with you guys. Anyways, did you ever ask what triggers the switch to live bloodworms from the gulp? Thanks.
thx man. he uses the gulp to test how hungry they are. if they're tasting and not biting, or the hooksets are on the outside of the lip, he'll start using live bait.
Got it! Thanks. Also like your formula: White water, messy, bubbly=RedTail, Calm rolling waves = BSP. You're cool bro. Origin: Batangas, Phil. How about you?
Had to go to Gray Whale from 4 to 6 pm today inspite of lousy weather to check my new Shimano Scimitar perch rod. Was gifted with a 13.5 inch Redtail. Needless to say, went home one happy dude. Fished/walked the entire beach 3 times and caught at the 3rd stretch by the rock at the left side of the beach. Wife made "Sinigang" and ate just a 3rd of the fish. Sarap sarap.
yup! we throw mainly carolina rigs with 4' fluoro leaders and 1 to 2 oz egg weights depending on current. in this vid we used 2 oz since the sidewash was strong that day.
Fish will bite anytime, but as long as there's consistent tide change, fish will feed best. For example, if high tide is at 9 am, best bite will prob be 6-8am and then 10-12pm.
Where are you all fishing? I want to surf fish but I have not been able to figure it out. To me surf fishing feels like Man against the Sea and the Sea always kicks my ass. Damn it, those surf perch look so good to cook up and eat.
haha i feel you, i learn something new ever time i'm out there. i don't disclose locations, but, i'll tell you to look for steep wave breaks with white water in the first 50 yards from shore. in that messy water is where redtails tend to thrive.
I used to surf fish with bloodworms on the east coast years ago. Now I live on the central Oregon coast. I fish for Perch but can't find anywhere that sells bloodworms on the west coast. Can you tell me where you find your bloodworms?
not much you can do unfortunately😭 i cut the leader as close to hook as possible, release fish and hope it rusts out in time. otherwise you take a chance of big ticket if caught in possession with a short fish.
@@lukemallet916 No, you only get a possession ticket if you keep a short fish longer than necessary to release it. For example, if you take a picture with a short fish, you are in violation since you are not "immediately" returning it to the water.
as far as reading the water and anticipating fish behavior, yes, i think the tips here apply to all surf species. the way you'd work your bait would probably differ though; just mimic the way your area's natural bait is naturally presented to your targeted species. hope this helps!
Red tail surf perch they are not scared of heavy line They are used to see all the stuff so you can get away with using heavy braided fishing line And I do know what I am talking about
Same way we do it in So. Cal except you want to try using "glass beads" instead of plastic beads."Why?" Plastic beads float so your leader usually doesn't sit straight. Glass beads sink, so you'll get a better hook set because your leader will allways be straight. I like using offset circle hooks as well to keep perch from swallowing the bait into there gullet. My biggest Barred surf perch was a whopping 4 lb. 10 ozs. Caught off Seacliff exit in Ventura on live ghost shrimp a few years ago. It was epic ! Tight lines ! 🐟
I like your tip regarding your choice of hooks, however... I'm not going to outright say that your perch wasn't that big, but it definitely sounds suspect (more like a "fisherman's tale"), as the CA State record since 1975 had been 4lb 4oz, but surpassed in 2016 by a 4lb 7oz'r caught in late 2015; [also] caught in Ventura, CA, by the way (see link below). Another point is that plastic beads actually do sink, they're just not as [heavy] as glass beads, hence the difference in their dynamics. wonews.com/t-SouthernCASaltwater_Ventura_021715.aspx
G J If you go inside Wileys Bait & Tackle in Malibu and go see Ginny. Inside is a mounted barred surf perch by Fred Oakley I think it was 5lb X oz. Not exact about exactly the total weight. Many LARGE fish are caught and do not go for state records because they are not perused as did mine. To add to My story, mine was witnessed by a DFG warden who came down to observe me on the surf, And He was the one who weighed it, because I was without a scale. So call it a Tall tail as you wish. But I'm 55 yrs old and caught White Sea Bass up to 18 lbs from the surf as well. Put your time in before passing judgement youngster.
Don't take it too seriously; like I said, your story [sounds] suspect. Thanks for the reply. As for the youngster comment, I've been collecting my SS for five years now, and you've got how many more before you can begin collecting? I was fishing the SoCal surf before you were born, sonny. ;0)
hi, yeah the 4000 would be too chunky and unbalanced for that size lami imo. i'd suggest the 3000 or even 2500 bg for the 8'g XII, nice light tackle setup. if you need a bg 4000, you're talking 9 to 10' m or mh surf rods.
This is by far, the best, most informative surf perch fishing video on TH-cam... explanations on behavior and tendencies when feeding and even snippets of what to look for in terms of water action for each species. Great job, thank you for this video!

Holy crap dude, Perch Whisperer using a $700 combo for perch fishing lol. Great vid Ish! Learned lots, thanks for sharing.
lolol even the perch sticks are expensive up here!
What combo is that? im curious....:]
+All Action Pack 9'6" G-Rod Pro Striper (MSRP $410) with a Shimano Sustain FI 5000 (MSRP $310). My guess is Marlon also goes after stripers with that setup, not just perch haha.
CaliCo Outdoors yeah this is his striper setup, buuut he uses the same bait too lol. the Perch Whisperer laughs at our feeble lures.
What would you spend for your favorite fish?
Nice nice nice very nice! Love the thumbnail lol
So Perch whisperer is a Pinoy, and you too, i heared you say “kuya”... anyways thank you for sharing...tightlines!🎣🎣🎣🇵🇭
salamat!
Definitely learned a lot from this! Thanks Ish!

Thanks so much you saved my ass :D
@Ephraim Jake Glad I could help =)
Thank you, it was fun and educative
Hey Ish is the Perch whispers still taking new student for the class🎣🐟🐟🐟😂
We use bloodworms for stripers in at the river
Great video! How i wish I have seen you video before going on my first fishing trip. When are you located at if you dont mind me asking? How big are the waves?
This dude is cool sadly not a lot of fishermen will shear there Knowledge
You are right not every fisherman will share it🎣🐠
Perch! Perch! So sad I missed out that day!😣
watching this right before school lol nice vid
thx ethan. i'm away for awhile for work, but when i get back and the weather clears i'll email you about gwc.
Great vid very informative. Dude know his stuff
thanks for the tips.
Absolutely love the video. My only question is where can i purchase live bloodworms? Im in california.
thx for watching. they're tough to source, but in south bay check Fishery Supply in sj, or New Coastside Tackle in Pacifica.
Nice stuff!
And THANK YOU so much for SHARING! SUBBED!
Good video and great lessons. Just apply what he told you and you will be the next whisperer! Lol
working on it lol
Hoy! Kalaloch,wa here i come 👊
Nice action. Calm Beach and super hot fishing. What month was this filmed?
about a month ago. my videos have been stacking up lately.
Nice vid man! I know you're not going to disclose the fishing spot but I would love to run into the perch whisperer and pick his brain. Socal or norcal?
np, we're in norcal
Awesome video bro
Great video as always! Are u going more at morning and night or do you go more based on the tides?
based on tides first, an overcast morning is best👍
Awesome! Thank you!
What California beach coast area u guys fishing at?
San Mateo coast. Just go out and take the time to find beaches that work for youb
How about you?
half pinoy, half puerto rican. i'm basically the bruno mars of youtube fishing channels lolol (except for the singing part haha)

New to surf fishing but very good with kayak fishing. A lot more to learn on reading the beach/waves as to troughs, holes, rips.
What’s up Ish?! Great video. Are you using an egg weight in this video? How much weight?
yup! we throw mainly carolina rigs with 4' fluoro leaders and 1 to 2 oz egg weights depending on current. in this vid we used 2 oz since the sidewash was strong that day.
Ish With Fish thanks man! You doing the Sand crab classic this year?
naw, i wish :( my schedule didn't allow it. if you go catch a 3.5 lb+, that seems to be the weight to beat each year, crazy!
Great vid & tips. How heavy of a weight are you using?
i usually throw a 1.5 oz egg weight. thx man!
Hey guys your video is so nice what part of california is that place
sf bay area👍🏼
What’s up with the chucks and wader? Lol come to east coast and let’s meet up at the cape cod canal one day
Looks like fun bro..Pinoys be killin hella fish.
is it now good for striped bass, im goin in 3 weeks fr now. hope to meet you.
I didn't know Converse made wading boots!
Nice video. Are you fishing south of the Golden Gate or North?
you get the piece of the pie not the recipe.
Lets fish man! I’m in SF
I just started out and I'm here in the City but I'm not even near your league lol
Does the Perch whisper have a channel too?
Ps, i got the frogg toggs you recommended and they are awesome 🎣
naw, pw has no channel. yup those waders are great value😁
I caught my 1st legal hali in those waders so im sold lol
What beach was this filmed at?
dude nice videos whats a good surf perch rod and reel
okuma sst 9' med, daiwa BG 3000, 30 lb braid and 20 lb mono leader ...you can can pretty much catch anything in west coast surf short of a big ray.
great thanks so much
So the best time to fish perch is during low tide? I'm not sure if I heard that correctly.
Fish will bite anytime, but as long as there's consistent tide change, fish will feed best. For example, if high tide is at 9 am, best bite will prob be 6-8am and then 10-12pm.

Hey Ish! What happens if you gut hook an undersized fish? Like a 9" red tail for example?
not much you can do unfortunately😭 i cut the leader as close to hook as possible, release fish and hope it rusts out in time. otherwise you take a chance of big ticket if caught in possession with a short fish.

@@lukemallet916 No, you only get a possession ticket if you keep a short fish longer than necessary to release it. For example, if you take a picture with a short fish, you are in violation since you are not "immediately" returning it to the water.
hey ish, what shades are you wearing? im looking for an over glasses shades
i use some cheap $20 Solar Shades i found at Walgreens. a must have in the surf!
Would these techniques work in Florida gulf coast?
as far as reading the water and anticipating fish behavior, yes, i think the tips here apply to all surf species. the way you'd work your bait would probably differ though; just mimic the way your area's natural bait is naturally presented to your targeted species. hope this helps!
Did you have any issue with sea grass or kelp getting tangled in your line?
no tangles, but if there's there's lots of grass i usually change beaches.
What beach are you fishing at?
Hey i want kuya like that too🎣🐟🐟🐟☺️
Thanks for the knowledge ' Pinoy For Life'
Planning a trip to the Pacifica surf. Any recommendation on specific locations?
sure, start near the pier and work that beach, pockets everywhere. every beach in that area is productive 2-3 hours before high tide.
Where did you get your blood worms, haven't seen them in my bait shops in a min.
Mike's Bait Shop in Oakland or Fishery Supply in San Jose
I would like to meet this guy..
Red tail surf perch they are not scared of heavy line They are used to see all the stuff so you can get away with using heavy braided fishing line And I do know what I am talking about
where do you go fishing I am from los angeles near lax
join California Surf Anglers on facebook, lots of socal spots mentioned there👍🏼
