A Carefree Day in Sanssouci | Discover Potsdam’s Prussian Pleasure Palace with DW's Hannah Hummel

  • How does this sound: A picturesque little castle palace surrounded by wine terraces and a romantic park - and you right in the middle of it all!
Join DW reporter Hannah Hummel for a relaxing day in Potsdam. She visits Sanssouci, the pleasure palace of King Frederick the Great. Hannah immerses herself in the atmosphere of the place, very much in the spirit of the Prussian king, who indulged in the good life here, far away from his court. Here he could indulge in nature, music and philosophy without worry - sans souci.

I have lived in Potsdam for 2 years now (moved cities) and walk the gardens at least once a week because I love them so much. But I never entered Sanssouci Palace for some reason, only looked at it from without. A lovely video, which was just reccommended to me by TH-cam. I love your energy, Hannah! And I'm happy to now more about Frederic II. now, he had an interesting life. I already knew the potato story though, I was pretty proud of that - haha. It's a good one.

Visitors like Goethe were always astonished that in Sanssouci unlike in other European palaces there were no any gunned watch guards and the people used the rooms as abbreviation while Frederick aka Fritz was reading books or sat on his desktop.

NO, I’m from Timbuktu. Bigger doesn’t mean better, if ur searching for the super large, Germany has em, even St Petersburg in Russia. Another example, Norte Dame is hardly what one would call a large cathedral, we all know it’s not, yet has super important history, country and world changing decisions were taken there. So size doesn’t matter.

...Without Worries, that's nice for Freddy...
Meanwhile, the living conditions of Prussian peasants during the reign of Frederick the Great were poor.
They were serfs, which meant that they were bound to the land and owed their lord labor and other services.
They were also subject to heavy taxes, and their lives were often disrupted by war.
They lived in small, cramped cottages that were often made of wood and mud.
They ate a simple diet of bread, potatoes, and cabbage.
They had little access to education or healthcare.
They were subject to the whims of their lords, who could demand labor, services, or even money at any time.

Very nice place, but along with the death of QE 2 in the UK, it does remind us of the excess opulence that people born into wealth and power have. He had all the time in the world to write poems and philosophical texts that he knew would be read for generations to come. Compare this with your average person, who will live, work and die most likely, with zero mark on the world, and be completely forgotten.
