      doesnt need an overhaul, they decommissioned perfectly serviceable natural gas power stations as a political exercise, with no regard for grid demand. Fixing it would be as easy as restarting the gas plants, but that would defeat the politicians virtue signaling.

    • @amagine1
      @amagine1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      And few are wanting to look at the fact the only way to get to the kind of power generation we need, we'll HAVE to build additional nuclear generators.
      "Oh we'll just throw money at solar and wind"
      Admirable but on a power per cubic foot per hour, solar and wind just isn't going to get us there.

    • @アマ-p2l
      @アマ-p2l 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@amagine1 Also, solar and wind energy require lots of energy or oil and plastic to produce. The question wether it even makes sense still remains. For wealthy countries with very little population density like some countries in scandinavia it's not a problem but in most other countries we're talking about something like a 30-50 year project, depending on how much the country can invest it might take a lot longer or it will take tons of ressources to complete, at that point you have to question wether it would be more benefitial for the planet if you just planet a billion trees instead of spending like 100 billions per couple of small countries on renewable energy while nuclear energy in the western world is pretty safe from what I know. All those countries talking about no ICE cars past 2035 are burning coal to power their EVs. You can just say given enough time we will fix everything but look around you, no major government is fixing ANYTHING for their people whatsoever, they only offer customer support for the lobbys and industry. I'm 100% sure that not a single billionaire in my country (we have a lot) will pay a single taxdollar which will go into renewable energy, remember a billionaire like Trump only has to pay about 750$ annual income tax IIRC so all of this nonesense would be paid by the people, us, and we wouldn't get anything from it because like I said you can't trust your government to make reasonable decisions, they only make profitable or corrupt decisions, and if it's better for our planet to plant a billion trees and rely on nuclear energy then there's not even any point in investing and caring this much about it. We could just pay people to plant trees, there's enough people without jobs, the fact that this idea never even comes up in official debates shows that we don't really care. They just pretend to care and use global warming to distract us from more important problems like corruption... sure I should care about our planet but how can I care about the planet while I ignore the fact that all of my politicians and lobbys couldn't care less about the environment and will keep 100 year old coalrunner engines going as long as they make profits off of that? In my opinion this means we can't even begin to take care of our planet before we are capable of making laws without interference from lobbys and corrupt suits.
      I didn't even adress the fact that nothing about EVs will work in asia either, it might work for 1-5% of the people living there but poor people won't be able to afford EVs, nobody will be able to build EV infrastructure in an overpopulated city and there are at least 50 overpopulated cities in asia which are inhabited by at least 500 million people or so, so at best EVs will only be for the rich and for western people and we will dump our ice cars in the third world? This just makes it more obvious what EVs really are, a simple luxury product. Sure, efficiency is important, but go ahead and try to convince an average person in asia, africa or south america why the efficiency of your 1000$ phone and 100000$ car is essential for them. Good luck.

    Matt doesn't understand Price/Equity ratios arent the only part of a valuation. Amazon didn't make money for over 10 years and the stock soared to a valuation of over 100 billion. Tons of huge companies follow this same path. The valuation of a company also incorporates future projections for profitability - again see AMZN. The AMZN bet for 10 years was hey, we're not profitable now, but we will be in the future. Thats the TSLA bet as well. Next, TSLA made 500 million on selling renewable credits in 2019, but that was part of 12 billion in revenue - so the idea that they only make their money on government subsidy is horseshit. Matt is clearly emotionally compromised by his personal hatred of Elon.

    I have respected Matt and his channel for a long time and appreciate his social awareness of things in general. I am also a old school car guy who has loved cars since I was a kid. I used to be a brand manager for Lotus and McLaren!! I am also not a Tesla Fanboy. Just somebody who is heavily invested in a company who is going to be at the forefront of the largest technological disruption of industry the world has ever seen in the next 10 years, and therefore very heavily researched in Tesla. He states that he has his eyes open to this but he is extraordinarily misguided with the actual depths of what is going on at the company and seems to have fallen victim to the fossil fuel industry sponsored media bias that has happened constantly over the last 10 years. Elon is not a fool or a thief or a charlatan. Startups that are attempting to disrupt industry always have to rely on investor injection for the sake of growth in early years while not being profitable. The exact same thing happened with Amazon and people questioned their share value and lack of profitability for years. Tesla also doesn't "rely" on the regulatory credits to be profitable. If you actually look at their 10Q you can see that they are aware that money is being injected and therefore have an opportunity to pour more than they would otherwise be able to into further Capex and growth. They also recently represented gross automotive profitability of 27.7% whereas the usual auto company is lucky if they generate 2 - 5%. Furthermore, the US government subsidizes fuel to the tune of Trillions with a "T" dollars a year so people don't have to pay $15 a gallon at the pump. It is certainly ironic that yes, Elon needs to fly frequently but at least he is doing so to try and transition the world faster towards sustainable energy. I am sure if he could do it more sustainably he would do so. Calling people who are fans of Tesla, cultists is just dismissive ignorance. I understand people need to be objective in their opinions but I have been to many car club gatherings over the years and you could label any groups of enthusiasts, a little cultish if you wanted. Porsche club people are no exception and I love Porsches. I will be buying one soon. Regardless, Matt is very mis-informed and has the wrong idea about Tesla as a company and Elon, I think, as a person. I just think he is a socially awkward guy, certainly on the spectrum, that is relatively aspirational so therefore a little late on some promises but generally just wants to do good overall. I understand Matt will never look into things in as much detail as I have however if he had read as many articles, listened to as many quarterly conference calls and listened to many well respected well informed TH-camrs (like Sandy Munro or Rob Maurer) as I have he would understand that if he continues with his opinions publicly like he does, he is going to regret it in future and be on the wrong side of history.

    An important point glossed over during the Tesla viability debate was; if you don't make enough profit off your product to sustain the business, and your stock value is sustained by bringing in more investors, then you're paying shareholders with other shareholders money= Ponzi Scheme.
    The point they both failed to mention, and is probably the most significant to Tesla's survival in the vehicle manufacturing business, is the effect of legacy manufacturers moving into the EV space. This scenario has played out repeatedly the industry. They will build vehicles at a profit immediately, that are comparable, and cheaper. When Tesla shareholders realize this, they will migrate. This is where the real problems begin because Tesla will have to actually buy those shares. Which is where the Ponzi Scheme is typically realized, unfortunately for the investors...

    • @deathcab4booty
      @deathcab4booty 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      He went over it on the Chris Harris podcast.
      Basically Tesla builds a prototype -- lets call it the Model B -- and sets a $100 refundable deposit saying it'll be here in 4 years, and then takes the sum of those deposits and goes to their investors saying "I have so and so amount of orders for this new thing! Give me money to build them!" and then Tesla takes that money to fulfil the orders for the last thing they promised, Model A.
      And when it comes time to actually build the Model B, they put out a prototype for a Model C and use the deposits + investor money to build Model B. And so on and so forth.
      The $100 deposit is low enough that somebody can Apple Pay that easily from their phone, and by the time the people who put a "deposit" down change their mind on it in 3 years, that $100 is long forgotten.
      I think Matt's issue with Tesla is the way they use the hype for new orders to pay for the release of the last order. The Teslas are fine vehicles but Jesus folks, don't give Elon money for something that you can't have right then and there.
      Give him money for the thing when it's released. Not as a deposit that he'll use to shoddily and hastily push out the previously promised model.

    THAT Tesla/Elon argument was something great! 🥃
    Loved how the Jonny brought whisky made the the conversation combustion mixture richer!
    I really did have the Fury Road image in my mind while listening to both of you, you know when in the movie they blow fuel into the intake of the engines while driving a 100 mph on gravel hahahahah 🤣 epic dude
    Keep fighting against Elon and Tesla’s bullshit while rightly keeping your opinions about their products themselves independent
    What an epic soaked conversion 🥃🥃🥃🥃🥃🥃

    During battery day Elon said in the future he sees it actually being more cost efficient to mine or recover lithium from used battery’s than to mine it from the ground and already is integrating that into the business model going forward so not only does this create a solution for used battery’s but also the issue of mining lithium. How it all shakes out is still to be seen but if your following the industry of evs and batter tech it’s pretty obvious this is part of the future, not a legitimate reason to not buy own or operate a ev.

    Matt had a lot of very valid points on the Tesla argument but it is a bit hard to be well articulated half a bottle of scotch in.
    Teslas stock price is indeed over inflated, but to be fair stocks are to an extent still a product, meaning that their price is still controlled by supply and demand. That said a company's value is not only reflected by its profits, but by all its assets and the main asset that has been driving their increase in value is their technology.
    Moreover, their stock strategy is a typical tech company/silicon Valley strategy. They know it is overinflated but they are benefitting from it, so they have no interest to do anything about it. They just hope they won't run into troubles which would lead to a crush of their stock. And even by that time the big holders will b have probably unloaded their stocks discreetly.
    Their biggest advantage against all old school car manufacturers is that their infrastructure and technology development is more in line of that of more agile technology/software companies and can therefore develop things much faster. However the old dogs are catching up slowly to this organisational model and they will soon be giving them a very good run for their money. Their first real battlefield will be in Europe where I think, the Germans (and to a lesser extent, the French ) will completely close the market door to them. Therefore, it would honestly not surprise me if Tesla gets bought off eventually by one of the big US manufacturers.

    I understand where Matt's coming from with regard to Elon musk, but he's one of those dudes that's legitimately doing so many incredible things that I can't hold him using a private jet or even the government credits against him. The Tesla model 3, at least last time I checked, is now the best selling luxury car in the entire world. His charging infrastructure, which he's probably going to start licensing out to others, is single-handedly going to make the prospect of buying electric car something that makes a fuck ton of sense for everybody. SpaceX is now the world leader in the utility of space travel. I really don't think he does enough wrong to outweigh everything he does right. Matt seems to have some very weird visceral reaction to him and I don't quite understand it.

But you're right saying mean things on Twitter is a far worse crime. Walking across the dmz in North Korea was an impressive accomplishment. Literal peace in the middle east not enough? He didn't execute a 16 year old american kid at a restaurant in Yemen like Obama Biden. Or how about the slave trade in north Africa created by the Obama Biden wars. Or creating and funding ISIS.
