Let's Take a DEEP DIVE Into MOBILITY SCOOTERS - Best Practices, Charging, Faults & Battery Care!

  • Today I've thrown together a quick video on the features of a mobility scooter and what to expect when buying one for the first time.
    I've also included a few subjects that cover the following:
    - Taking care of your mobility scooter battery and best charging practices.
    - Fault finding with the onboard fault self diagnosis system
    - All the basic features of a mobility scooter
    - How to use a mobility scooter (basics)
    - AND MUCH MORE!
    As mentioned, this video was thrown together ad-hoc so excuse the messy workshop and the annoying echo. My thinking was rather than put the video off, just upload something that might help other people who get stuck with their mobility scooter.
    I'll be releasing a more "in-depth" video soon covering more fault finding, features and a proper drive around showing how to really use a scooter safely.
    PLEASE CONSIDER LIKING AND SUBSCRIBING!

    I replaced some batteries in Apex Rapid scooter without making a note of what wires were connected to the circuit breaker. looking around on the internet at various videos and pictures of common breakers i'm guessing it should be battery negative to the terminal marked LINE on the breaker ? the negative terminals on both of the batteries had accumulated some sort of green chemical powder by the way. On the internet it says this but I don't know if I trust it " if they are labelled load and line they are most like carling breakers (which are pretty much all non polarity sensitive). "

    Hi am pleased to commend you on your contributions on & of the ills of mobility scooter: but I have a problem I would like to ask for your advise! I own a Drive Cobra GT-4 mobility scooter approximitly 4 years old that a first I through needed new batteries because after a charge the scooter would show full charge but would rapaidly lose that charge within 30 minutes of normal use; after batteries exchange the same systoms exist plus now it has no power to climb any inclines no matter how low! What could be the cause? When ever you have the time of course THANKS IN ADVANCE!

    My neighbour scooter goes for 1/2 an hour then it slow down like if the battery is dead, i had the battery testes and they told me theirs no problem with the battery. I charge it for 15 minutes the green light turn on, and again it goes for 1/2 an hour and slow down to a stop again. So i tested the battery and it shows both of them are at 12.5 volt but the scooter won’t move or move very slow like if the battery is dead. What could cause that? Basically when the battery are full charge they show 13. 6 volt and the scooter works fine for 1/2 an hour until the battery falls to 12.5 volt then it act like if the battery is dead even if it still at 12.5 volt. I’m just trying to give my neighbour a hand, he’s hold and can’t afford a new one or pay to get it fixed.

    • @themobilityguy
      @themobilityguy  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Definitely sounds like motor , when you take off the brushes, shine a light into the motor and see if it’s black , if it is then it’s due to carbon build up and you’ll see I have a video on how to fix motors. If it’s gold and not black then it’s most likely another issue with the motor so might need a replacement motor
      In terms of batteries , a worn motor could drain your battery much lower quickly

      @@themobilityguy thank you very much fo the quick answer, i think this will help me allot, i sent him for 1/2 an hour ride this morning, the scooter was hardly moving we he came back, so i didn’t charge the battery but left the the motor to cool down, after the motor was cold he went for another 1/2 hour he did that 3 times today on the same charge, it did put a smile on his face because he doesn’t have to buy new battery. Tomorrow i will clean his motor and see if it fixed the problem. I’m sure glade i found you on youtube last night. I will let you know if the motor cleaning worked. After two weeks of head scratching now i know where the problem is.

    • @themobilityguy
      @themobilityguy  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Your neighbour hasn’t a clue what they are talking about and their ill advice will cost you money.
      Never ever let your batteries drain low, always keep them topped up above 50% in my opinion
      One way to kill your batteries is to run it down to zero , please don’t ever do that

    • @Mister_Ess
      @Mister_Ess ปีที่แล้ว

      @@themobilityguy thank you!! I knew that my neighbor was a moron. Not to mention that he's had to get his scooter fixed countless times.
      I've had my scooter for about half a month, and I perform regular light maintenance on it, such as tightening the arm rests and steering column when and if they become loose.
      I haven't had any issues with mine yet, probably because I go slow over bumps and take care of it. I gotta take care of it, because I can't afford to replace it.

    • @themobilityguy
      @themobilityguy  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Mister_Ess yep unfortunately there’s lots of these types of advice going around.
      Watch your scooter when stored in cold weather too, as batteries HATE the cold.
      A general rule of thumb is charge it any day your out on it. Now and then let the batteries go down a bit lower and give it a longer charge.
      But save the times where your battery is extremely low for situations where you don’t have any way of charging it as every time you let the battery get really low it’ll hurt the cells.
      Thanks for your comments and best of luck with your scooter, any questions feel free to pop a comment up here

    There's actually not an 8mph/13kph speed restriction in the EU, that's only for the UK. It's actually quite common for EU models (particularly in the Netherlands) to manage 20kph (12mph), while some can even do 25kph (15mph).

    • @themobilityguy
      @themobilityguy  ปีที่แล้ว

      Nope you’re totally wrong , so wrong it’s funny.
      I’ve sold thousands of these machines and they go to 8mph and that’s as simple as that.
      Maybe try not compare MOBILITY scooters against E scooters , there’s is no way on this good earth that some old lady is flying up the road on a mobility scooter at 25kph Ffs
      Also , all mobility scooters use the same control unit , they don’t offer an EU model
      Do your research before just making assumptions

    • @DavidTheScientist
      @DavidTheScientist ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@themobilityguy I think I know what I'm talking about, I did my master's thesis on mobility scooter use, and my PhD is on the same. If you can point me towards a new piece of legislation, I'd be happy to see it though.
      I can assure you that there are mobility scooter models in the Netherlands that can reach 20kph and more. I suspect that Irish market models are mostly UK market models, and of course it's possible that in Ireland they've adopted the same 8mph limit as the UK, it would be interesting to know.

      @@DavidTheScientist The laws vary from country to country... I'm in Canada. Everyone is breaking the laws on the latest e-bikes, they exceed the weight limit. As for mobility scooters, it is becoming comical with the little Dr Seuss cars 😂... Not the price though, and many are junk at even 10K with SLA that burst. As for speed, I have a 16" wheel, 60 volt HQ triporter that does 21 mph stock. Even companies like Pride are labeling some of their scooters "recreational". My oen strongly resembles their "Baja Triporter". A more important designation is which are covered by insurance or Medicare. Top speed doesn't mean much. Remember these are for handicapped... Stability with high weight, shock absorption, controllability are critical. Cup holders have allure for many, but... Never lose sight of basic function or safety.

    • @DavidTheScientist
      @DavidTheScientist 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@andykerr3803 Wow, 21mph is fast...
      Top speed is if course related to stability to an extent, but more importantly to the infrastructure being used. If it's being used on the sidewalk, obviously 21mph is inappropriate, even a narrow cycle path you'll be exceeding the design speed of the infrastructure.
      Part of my research is looking at the match between the device and infrastructure type, and looking at design speeds for both the device and infrastructure. Certainly, an 8mph top speed as in the UK for a mobility scooter (if a larger model) seems a bit limiting to me, when city bikes regularly travel around 12-14 mph. But again, you need the right [cycle] paths to support those kinds of travel speeds...

    Typical mobility scooters do not run well in grass because of small wheels and little ground clearance plus limited power. Three wheeled scooters are more maneuverable for indoor use , four wheelers are more stable. Learn about battery maintenance and limitations of various type and brands of scooters. Teach beginning/elderly losers safe operations and battery charging. Buy a popular name brand scooter that will have service and parts available, (not the cheapest) A used mobility scooter may cost more to have repaired than it is worth or not have repairs available. I have had good service from my Pride Go Go Elite Traveler with minor repairs and battery replacements. Expect scooters to transition to much lighter longer duration Lion batteries in near future.
