So I got Narcoameba as a Pre-release rare, _and_ a second one in a booster. I dutifully made a Dimir Surviel deck. In the 3 rounds we played, I played nine games. In those nine games, I hardcase those Amoba's roughly 13 times. I survieled it into play... Twice. The card is bad in Limited.
I had the same situation (promo and one in pack). It was an absolute house for me, my prerelease was a bit small (only 4 rounds), but I surveiled at least one into play in every single game. Often times two. High variance I suppose
You are certainly welcome to figure out the odds on doing a sealed event where two of the 6 rares you open are both identical, and then Nacroaoeba's. I suspect those odds are somewhat small. You are then, of course, welcome to do further testing yourself.
16:00 "Papapaint (sp?) made a really cool video about this and went really deep on this card and I'll put a link in the show notes" Obv Marshall didn't put a link in the show notes. Ya'll know where it is?
I don’t get LSV’s reluctance to run Erratic Cyclops in Boros. It’s not super aggressive but it does get Mentored like a champ and they pretty much can’t kill it with combat damage unless their board is massive.
I'll co-sign this comment, Erratic Cyclops seems like an intentional red herring in Izzet. You could run it there, but it might be better in Boros where it benefits both from mentor and instant-speed tricks. Even the flavor text hints that this isn't really an Izzet card.
I had Divine Visitation and 2 copies of Assure // Assemble in my sealed pool and I felt like I had so much inevitability. If I survived to the late-game it made it so hard to lose.
I think Chance for Glory is a lot better than most people think at first glance. 3 Mana instany. It wins games for Boros before other decks can stabilize from your early game. Played it in my sealed boros deck won 4 games solely because of it.
I had someone say gg into settle on Arena recently. Never happened to me before but I took the time to think about the attack as if they had not said it because they still had a strong board and would eat my creatures on blocks even if they had spot removal. Best part was me proceeding to top deck and win anyway :D. They said gg again before the end and actually conceded this time. The trick is if you are playing in person and they say gg, just stop and ask "are you conceding?" If they say no, pretend they said nothing.
Definition of menagerie 1a : a place where animals are kept and trained especially for exhibition b : a collection of wild or foreign animals kept especially for exhibition
My golgari prerelease kit was so bad that the sunburst sentry was my best card. I played almost every guild gate i had...it was terrible. It did go off in two games however, and those games were fantastic.
I would have lost a game to drowned secrets in a dimir mirror match if I hadn't been splashing assassin's bounty. Ended game with just 2 lands in my deck.
Was watching the Dream Eater review and I'm thinking what happens if you have to surveil 4 and you have 2 cards in your library? Do you lose there and then?
Mission Briefing not giving Flashback is relevant for cards with additional costs. You are casting the spell, where as Flashback is an alternate cost, meaning if it granted Flashback you couldn’t pay Kicker costs or cast X spells.
That is incorrect. Flashback is an alternate cost, so you cannot pay other alternate costs with a flashbacked spell, such as Overload. With Flashback you can however pay additional costs like Kicker, and you can choose X larger than 0.
Did you read what I said? I'm agreeing with you. Mission Briefing allows you to cast X spells and Kicker costs from your graveyard. They were saying it's basically Flashback, which is why I said why it's important that it's not Flashback.
Pr0fridge Yes actually. For the card Severed Strands, it has an additional cost of sacing a creature. If Mission Briefing granted flashback, it would only require you to pay 2, not the additional cost of sacing a creature. There's also the X spell Explosion in Expansion//Explosion. Besides, while I know they are evaluating for Limited, saying it grants Flashback is misleading.
You are incorrect about Flashback and additional costs. You 100% can (and must if a card requires it like Strands does) pay additional costs such as Kicker or Escalate, when casting with Flashback. It is only alternate costs like Overload that you can't do, since Flashback itself is an alternate cost. You can also pay X costs if it is given the Flashback cost of "its mana cost", like Snap does. The only thing about Briefing that isn't the same as giving it Flashback is that you can still pay alternate costs like Overload
I initially thought menagerie was to hard to set up. But then you just play three cards that chump (hired poisiner, rat, stray) and you drown your opponent in value.
SnowToad i had it in my selesnya prerelease pool...was my promo, i was pretty sad when i saw it considering i could have opened trostani or nullhide ferox or march of the multitude or even beast whisperer...i played it, not expecting much...but wow did the card overperform...it helped me win a race against my boros opponent from out of nowhere...it saved a creature from an hypothesizzle, at the same time pumping up a rosemane centaur being blocked by a pistonfist cyclops plus dealing 3 to the opponent...i did, however, side it out against a dimir opponent that had like 23 removal spells...overall it was much better than i expected...with all that said i too am suprised to see it at A...it feels more like a B+, maybe even A-
Etrata gets shuffled after winning the game because she kills her marks and then disappears again - totally a flavor thing , I can't believe they botched the order of play so terribly by accident, I think it is a flavor thing.
does citywide Bust kill Carnage tyrant? iuit does doesn't it, since it doesn't actually target the creature, right? Dawn of hope, is it really as powerful as they say? I mean, 4 mana for 1/1 lifelinker doesn't sound like a great deal to me. but sure, if you have tons of mana, go for it. with the Divine Visitation, why woulæd you hget the Sworn companion first? it's a common. would you first get this and then the common that supports it, because I don't think anyone picks commons in the first round of draft. with Experimental Frenzy, you can't put multiple lands down at once right? like say... you get 3 land drops you can just put them on the battlefield and then cast what ever the 4th card is right? Nullhide Ferox is already like 10 $, but I can understand that. Etrata will be sick in a control deck that gets to search for cards in their libirary, because then you can just search her up 2 times (or 3) and you win the game.
Thank you Marshall for turning the split cards!
Wow I wasn't expecting this out for another few days, thanks for getting it to us so swiftly!

FleetAdmiralHalsey Thank you for your work.

Thank you for your results oriented thinking on a small sample size when it might not have been the right conditions
You are certainly welcome to figure out the odds on doing a sealed event where two of the 6 rares you open are both identical, and then Nacroaoeba's. I suspect those odds are somewhat small. You are then, of course, welcome to do further testing yourself.
I also got one as my promo and one as one of my rares. I played grixis and didnt play the narcomoebas. Went 3-2
Starts at 5:39
Love you guys thank you so much for all of your time and effort!
16:00 "Papapaint (sp?) made a really cool video about this and went really deep on this card and I'll put a link in the show notes"
Obv Marshall didn't put a link in the show notes. Ya'll know where it is?
Here you go! th-cam.com/video/3f340DKNme4/w-d-xo.html
Just finished work and can now relax with LR for the evening ❤️

Thanks for the video! Just in time for draft weekend.
at the prerelease of this set I actually got chamber sentry and chromatic lantern. it did actually win me some games.
Also, Invert // Invent is good with erratic cyclops. A blue/red cost spell that switches toughness and power of two seperate creatures
Another great review guys! 😃👍
Excellent. Thanks for the insight
Haha! "I'm not falling for it" regarding the pronunciation of menagerie. LSV was correct and trying to help Marshall.
Emmara is a druid of the cowl that spawns Llanowar elves with lifelink. dope. Can't wait to have her in my pool / draft
Its a very small touch... but I loved the way the split cards rotated in and out as they came up.
I opened 3 Response // Resurgences at the pre-release. That was a good time.
I agree and had similar experiences. Thsy were totally wrong on this one. (It is tough to give thoughtful reviews to all cards...)
Can confirm: Turn 3 Dimir informant hitting Narcomoeba IS sweet.
Can confirm: drawing it late game sucks ass

Definition of menagerie

26:3726:37 It's ability won't trigger if you discard it, it has to be sent to the graveyard from the library.
They know that. LSV says that it gets better when you have discard because it makes use of the Card when you draw it.
So should we just Sharpie all our Chromatic Lanterns and use them for tokens? Nice review guys!
I had an izzet opponent who had 2x risk factors in their pool this weekend. I was at 5 life when he cast it both times. I did not win that game.
I love you guys
Risk Factor is an A card 8 damage or 6 cards
Is this info in a written list anywhere?
My golgari prerelease kit was so bad that the sunburst sentry was my best card. I played almost every guild gate i had...it was terrible. It did go off in two games however, and those games were fantastic.
My golgari prerelease kit had vivid revival as a promo..then I drew 2 more vivid revival's from my boosters -.- .
@@williamzhang153 my promo was also vivid revival but you really got shafted there...condolences
It worked out lol, I went 3-1 :P
1:07:23 these guys...no chamaraderie
Someone tried to pull the "GG" then Settle move on me the other day; luckily I played around it and won a round later. :)
If you cast Lazav and then copy a dimir bug in response to the etb surveil trigger, can he become a 1/1 flyer with a +1/+1 counter?
Flying Camel . Yes.
awesome, no idea when that would be a good thing but hey, tricks!
No, you don't actually lose for having zero cards in your library, you lose if you would draw a card with zero cards in your library

Shoulda talked about Dimir Spybug more even though its an UC. Damn card is ridiculous.
Anarchon D I think that is why they didn’t; quite obviously a good card.
Even though it's not even close to the best dimir uncommon.
Why no E category?
The American academic grading system skips from D to F. I'm not sure why tbh
oh yeah
Interesting that LSV’s instincts were wrong on Narcomeba and Drowned Secrets where Marshall’s were right. The cards are bad.
Its funny how when you guys disagree on the rating of a card you try to negotiate with eachother on its value 😂
Camaraderie goes better in a Naya tokens generation deck
I was drafting, in MTGA, I was W/G, pack 2 the bot passes me Niv, pack 3 the bot passes me Ral.... I should had switched...
MTGA is weird in that signals are much more important then usual. The bot takes them much more seriously and commits much harder then most players.
i dont get how explosion would be a draw ... you would deck urself but its only importent ur next DRAW step and they are dead NOW so ... u win ?
You lose the game for drawing on an empty library whenever you try and draw from said empty library, not just specifically on your draw step.
They never even mentioned the Sarkhon/Niv synergy; he gets Niv out on turn 4, and his +1 also triggers Niv.
Limited resources!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I think Narcomeba is a great build around!
I'm surprised Bounty of might gets an A
For six mana you get either a 3 for 1 or 9 to the face. Sure you need dudes on the board.
SnowToad i had it in my selesnya prerelease pool...was my promo, i was pretty sad when i saw it considering i could have opened trostani or nullhide ferox or march of the multitude or even beast whisperer...i played it, not expecting much...but wow did the card overperform...it helped me win a race against my boros opponent from out of nowhere...it saved a creature from an hypothesizzle, at the same time pumping up a rosemane centaur being blocked by a pistonfist cyclops plus dealing 3 to the opponent...i did, however, side it out against a dimir opponent that had like 23 removal spells...overall it was much better than i expected...with all that said i too am suprised to see it at A...it feels more like a B+, maybe even A-
Yeah but, can you really feel THAT bad for someone who swings out against a white player with 4 mana up and cards in hand?
Narcomoeba doesn't say "Draw a card" on it - This is like a 23rd card in your limited deck.
Milling it with surveil is functionally identical to drawing it and playing it for 0 mana.
Surveil doesn't effect the board by itself. This card allows you to circumvent drawing it and paying 2 mana.
Etrata gets shuffled after winning the game because she kills her marks and then disappears again - totally a flavor thing , I can't believe they botched the order of play so terribly by accident, I think it is a flavor thing.

You sound like the guy from lazy game reviews (lgr)
Worst tha gates !! nothing special !! c+ !! lmao
