Absolutely. I just checked out an emulator for 64 and marveled on how upscaled, smooth, and brought some new life to the Mario 64 game. I would pay if Nintendo really brought new life in these old games.
they could've done it during the 3DS era...the 3D Classics versions of some of the NES games is prob the closest we'd get to a pixel remaster. But they stopped cause they said it was too resource intensive or somethingg
Super Mario World received a fan patch to work in wide-screen, and Super Metroid as well, the games had to be reprogrammed so that the enemies and items behave as they do in the 4:3 aspect ratio. Even in a CRT, playing on original hardware, Donkey Kong Country has noticeable pop in, specially if you blaze through some levels, you can clearly see barrels spawning at the edge of the screen. I think the original DKC trilogy would also work great with a wider aspect ratio. But again, these games need to be reprogrammed to work properly. Yes, I think such remasters would sell great, just because of what they represent and the few tweaks would be more attractive. I don't think any of this is necessary, but it would be interesting to see.
You know what my idea is? Add in Super Mario Bros 3 1/2. The "Super Mario Advance 4" remake on the GBA had e-reader levels. And on the Wii U Virtual Console / Switch Online versions, they brought over ALL existing e-reader levels. But they're technically still just completly seperated levels, and you'd select them from a list of levels. So remake them all, and tie them all together into a Super Mario Bros 3 1/2. Fix some of the really low time limits (or just take the Mario Wonder formula, and remove the time limits entirely, except for the few levels that were specifically designed for speedrunning). Add in a proper world map. And it will become a nice campaign. A shorter campaign, which is why it gets called 3 1/2. For Super Mario Bros 1, add in the Red Coins and Yoshi Eggs into all levels, from the GBC game's Challange mode. Add in the "Super Luigi Bros" mode from one of the NES Remix games. Add proper co-op! There exist a romhack that allows you to play SMB1 in Co-Op, and it's really cool, but the lack of the "bubble" mechanic makes dieing a pain, and entering pipes annoying (both players must enter a pipe for it to work). Nintendo can do it better, I'm sure. In fact, for all games, have an option to switch the art style between NES, SNES, GBA, and the brand new Switch graphics. But basically, since almost every game has 3 or 4 versions - look at what other remakes did, take those ideas, add more improvements. There is so much potential to make this the difinitive way to play all 5 games.
would be great. but keep the palette swapped items in Mario 3. those are so charming. and I sorta took those to be due tot he lighting in the areas, since it was usually underground or something, rather than some sort of glitch. seeing a fully bright, colorful fire flower in an underground or fortress level would look so out of place to me.
I’d like to see a call back SMB Deluxe somehow. Throw in a calendar or something. Give me an original mode and give me the mode with collecting red coins. Make my cup overfloweth!
The GBA versions address a few of the issues you mentioned, especially Mario Bros 2. But if they remade them again, I would give them my money.... Again...
6:42 This blank part of the screen was made to prevent the visual bug that happens on the right, but due to limitations, it can only be done on the left side of the screen. Items with "wrong colors" actually share their palette with other elements. This palette changes from level to level. And the "odd artifacts in the background" are actually intentional (and personally, i think they really give their own charm, i like them). I think the idea of a remake would be good, but that it should also include super mario land 1 and 2. Those games deserve more love. And i feel like nintendo should do like with super mario rpg: adding an option to play the original music, in retro style. I feel like there should also be an option to play the games either in their original style, or with brand new graphics, and the original style could be unlocked, for example, if you beat the game once. They should also add new stuff, like star coins, or extra collectibles/levels/modes, which would increase replayability. A multiplayer mode would also be good.
In my view the definitive mario 2d collection would - have all the 2d platformers released from smb to sml2 - every pre smb mario game as bonus (game n watch & the arcade games for example) - advanced options system - widescreen (4:3, 4:3 with borders, 16:9) - graphics toggle (proto, original, modern) - lives system toggle - score (can deactivate and activate, and also reset score data) - improved psychs and moveset options - wall jumps, mid air spins, sideflips, handstands, spin jump - enemy bounce (auto, smb1, smb2, modern) - coyote time toggle - mirror mode - wl2 save system (allows you to save anywhere) - smb1 having cutscenes that explains the plot based on the manuals & the korean board game - smbdx features, bonuses & game modes - smbs & tll as extra campaigns - smb2 having FDS/YKDDP and Proto Death sfx as an option & level designs options (original and advance) - smb3 having the advance 4 into cutscene, e reader levels & all stars' vs mode - sml having extra levels - sml2 having a hard mode As for the art style, there's few possibilities Could be wonder but tweaked, Yoichi Kotabe Artstyle, an advanced pixel art style based on vb mario land with GBA coloring, lineless
2:16 hot take: i think the concept of having lives in games should dissapear completely they only exist because they were invented during arcade times, by having a lives system, there's motivation to use more quarters
It would be great if beating each title unlocked a "special" or "challenge" mode a la the e-reader levels in SMBA4:SMB3-give designers a chance to flex and players an incentive to play all the way through, rather than just dabbling for an afternoon. Have always wanted a true, nintendo-produced follow up to SMB:USA anyway... And this is really a pipe dream, but I'd love these to get the Digital Eclipse Gold Master Series/Atari 50 treatment with background docs, interviews, archival footage.
I like the idea on paper, but I think it would be a hard sell. All Stars really is this already for the most part, and you get it with the Nintendo Switch Online service. I do like the idea of HD-Retro graphics in the style of FF Pixel Remaster, where graphics are more of an imitation of how it should have looked or appeared in our imaginations rather than how it actually looked, but I don’t think that and widescreen support would be enough of a push. Maybe if they brought in a lot of extra content like the Satellaview levels or something to sweeten the pot…
You should try the fangame Super Mario Brothers X. It's like Mario Maker but with a lot more assets and playable characters. The individual games are called episodes. One of the bundled episodes "the invasion 2" combines a ton of assets and features from all 4 of the classic mario games. The only issue with the engine is the 4:3 aspect ratio that I think can only be changed by editing the config.
The clipped and gliched sides of NES SMB3 were'nt a problem on most people's TVs at the time. CRT screens would 'overscan' the image, so those parts wouldn't be visible (or barely visible). Same with the coloured borders on lots of Mega Drive games. As for your idea of 16:9 remasters, Yes! But they won't be able to please everyone. Like, I prefer NES SMB1 and SMB2 (Japan) but SNES versions of SMB2 (USA) and SMB3. I don't want shadows or anything re-drawn.. but everything could be re-drawn in various ways and look different versions of terrific. Honestly though, I'm happy enough with the originals and black borders. There's a 16:9 hack of Super Mario World but I just want to play the version I've always known.
@@GTV-Japan I took a look at some NES SMB3 CRT uploads on TH-cam. You're right that it could still be a problem, depending on the TV. Footage from this Sony Trinitron is the way I remember it (although I didn't have the same TV): th-cam.com/video/nTqT7d3wOq8/w-d-xo.htmlsi=ggYD8rOok-2trxQU
I think the only reason that super hard levels even exist on the maker games is because of the popularity of Kaizo rom hacks. As for some recreations of older Nintendo games, I'd be all for it, but knowing Nintendo it could be a double edged sword, like what happened with F-Zero. I mean sure, F-Zero 99 is pretty good and all but I would rather have had that game as a single player only game with new courses, new vehicles and widescreen 1080p with 60FPS. Maybe I don't see what battle royale adds to a game like this but to me it felt like a punch in the gut, I grew up with that game and I've been waiting for a port of F-Zero GX for ages now, and the only way to play THAT game in 1080p with 60FPS is by using Dolphin.
I may be about a month late but still: The SMW Pixel Remaster would _require_ to contain the Super Mario All-Stars + Super Mario World Luigi Sprites to get a purchase from me. Can _anybody_ tell me why they weren't in the GBA Remake?!
Good points! At least the option! Cmon!! But he leave out the Super Mario Advance voices. Don’t need to hear lucky lucky lucky lucky 99 million times again.
One thing people always over look is that the enemy and obstacle placement was designed for thst smaller screen size. Giving a wider viewport means you can see whats coming up. It also potentially gives Mario more space to move around and dodge. Basically, even a simole thing like increasing the view to widescreen would necessitate level design changes and possibly even a gameplay overhaul since Mario will have a lot more space to work with.
@@GTV-Japan I mean, spreading the obstacles out or changing how the screen scrolls could be enough. I'm just saying until you've actually tried it you don't know how it will effect gameplay. Maybe Nintendo is aware and doesn't want to change the game? Or more likely they've just opted to innovate and make new Mario games. That is also Nintendo's style.
What I find odd is how rushed the final updates made to Super Mario Maker 2 were. They added a world builder feature, but it feels more like a highly-anticipated afterthought than anything, although I wish they could've designed it better, the Super Mario World style they went with uses a few big pieces to cover a small area almost as big as a modern TV screen. I do think, in my opinion, that the Super Mario Bros. 3 style would've been better in that case. If a Super Mario Maker 3 becomes a possibility in the future, I hope they implement the ability for gamers to build Super Mario Bros. 2/USA-style courses and multiple game files using both the course builder and world builder tools...
I have to wonder about Maker 3. There really is no reason to make one and the big N can instead just add on to maker 2. What would Maker 3 be like? At the core almost the same as 2 which really was the same as 1. If the Next Switch is backwards compatible, I don't se why not, then it's a strange position to be in.
Had to spend a few days thinking about this, but yes I would, if only to encourage N (and maybe other Publishers as well) to do the same. A group of games done in the spirit of FF Pixel RM would be great, but I would need a lot of extras to truly enjoy it, which quite frankly is against N's religion. As for what my perfect pack of games (the one N would charge $60-$70 for) would be this: All three OG SMB titles warts and all along with all the "All Stars" games (again, warts and all). But also include some fun stuff. SMB 2 done in the blocky style of part 1? SMB3 still pixely, but with bright 16-bit colors and widescreen? SMB 1 with lots of well hidden levels, some of which you have to question if they are intentional (along with special appearances from future bosses and enemies in the franchise? I would lay $70 for that; a non-lazy effort that is meant to celebrate (and have fun with) Mario. I don't EVER believe N could do something like this in the modern day (especially outside of Japan), but it is fun to hope
I'd buy it in a heartbeat. Even if they redid the graphics to match Wonder. Id pay full price $60-70 if it had all of them with World on a physical cart.
They could always just build from the SNES/GBA versions of each game since they were the most refined versions of these games to date, though in the case of the NES games, having the option to switch between 8 or 16 bit graphics and sound would be great, maybe the option to play in 4:3 or 16:9. Plus the e-reader levels of SMB3 on GBA. Maybe add the You Vs Boo or Racing in SMB1 like the SMB Deluxe.
One of my dream Mario games are remakes of of Super Mario Bros 1-3, World, and Yoshi's Island with all the features added from Super Mario Bros Deluxe and the Advance series. Call it, Super Mario Allstars Advance and maybe throw in a remake of New Super Mario Bros with new features like power ups from the other games and new levels and you got yourself one hell of a package.
Small change I have yet to see is “proper” (blue) coloring on Mario’s sprite for 1 and 3. I know it was a limited color thing back then but now it should be a tiny fix.
The reason why it was changed it's due to background blending with the shirt's and shoes' color Altough instead of using the ugly green brown tone they could've just made it more purple
@@ssg-eggunner the blue they used in the prototypes was quite dark, and still vibrent in black, maybe it intertwined with the blocks in the underground too much
If this ever happens. for Super Mario World, have the new Luigi sprite from the All-Stars version, but have his floaty jump be an option to turn on/off.
I wouldn't wishlist pixel remasters of the old Mario games because: 1) I've already played them, and I don't really go back and replay games I've already played anymore 2) I've played many a great 2D platformers that came out after the old-school Mario games that I feel like if I did replay the old Mario games, I'd just think they felt dated I think a better idea would be for Nintendo to apply the Mario maker model to other, non-platformer Mario games. For example, RPG Maker has been a think for ages now, so how about Nintendo put out a Paper Mario Maker or a Mario & Luigi Maker?
I personally think the same treatment could work really well with the original Metroid, maybe like the 3D classics Kid-Icarus on 3Ds with added backgrounds.
Nintendo didn't make something fans asked for until someone made AM2R. Since this released, I've always wanted a Mega Man Maker. Make your own robots. Pixel Remasters of FF 1 - 6. Oh yeah, got platinum trophies on those really quick.
that’s right! Nintendo tells their fans to go to hell all the time and yet like suckers we/you/them line up to buy their stuff and keep them in business forever.
@@GTV-Japan I admit, I'm a bit of a sucker. However, I'm buying less Nintendo stuff. Of my 3 modern consoles, I play PS4/5 most, I play the Switch maybe 1 ever couple of weeks (1 big reason is I love unlocking trophies). Lastly, I might turn on my Xbox 1 a month. Just nothing spectacular about the Xbox.
Now that you say it, they already have the engine with SM Maker 2. Except for Mario USA. Let's hope they're just waiting for Super Mario Bros. big anniversary in 2025.
Sounds cool! Maybe do some boarders on the screen left and right (sort of how Game Show Network in America airs some of their shows especially Match Game)! HD game would definitely sell! 😊🎮
I love the Super Mario games on the NES, even the 16-bit version seemed great to me. My first GBA game was SMA and I spent hours playing Mario Maker. However, the idea of a pixelated remake does not attract me at all. When the Wii came out, I hoped that for the plumber's celebration they would use the NSMBW engine to give us a new Allstars, unfortunately it didn't happen, so what I want most now is a remake but using current graphics, the same engine for SMB 1.2 ,3,USA,World and even Land 1 and 2.
I would love to see this. I think the better reference would be Sonic Origins Plus. They did the pixel perfect job on 16:9 aspect ratio, autosave, and other small QOL improvements. That’s all I needed
They did a terrible job on Sonic Origins, such a waste of potential. Sure Plus made it a bit better but it was still a rush-job cash-grab. I mean, when the head of the studio (Stealth) who made the best part of your collection (S3&K) calls you out on launch day for the bad job you did, you know you messed up.
Sonic Origins had scummy pricing schemes and a terrible and rushed end product that was suppose to celebrate Sega's cash cow's anniversary. Just like Sonic 06. Even the people who were contracted to make the game complained how glitchy it ended up.
I always wanted to see HD pixel dot art remasters of old video games. Unfortunately I think if these Japanese companies did remake these games they would use polygons and it wouldn't be the same thing. If they used pixel art with today's modern resolutions the characters would look like the art in the instruction manuals come to life. Just imagine what that could look like for a Mario game it would be amazing. But instead they use polygons. Examples of pixel art HD editions done right would be Earthworm Jim, Double Dragon, DuckTales. An example of one gone wrong would be Street Fighter II HD remix which instead of using the original art as its basis used Udon to redraw all the characters and it looks terrible.
6:55 on an original CRT box tv, you wouldn't have been able to see those since they are obscured by the curve of the screen. Additionally, most emulators have a setting to crop these parts out. 7:07 those are meant to be there... they're like clouds or star constelations or something... either way they're an intentional part of the game (sorry for being an asshole, just wanted to point these thing out lol)
If you look at this video from 1990 you’ll see the side bar exists on the tv th-cam.com/video/b_ft_6nMnqo/w-d-xo.htmlfeature=shared especially 1:42. In direct capture it’s cropped to look better though
Yes I will absolutely buy all 4 2d super Mario bros games with a pixel Remaster ASAP and replay Mario 3 because it’d my favourite 2d favourite Mario game.
I dunno, as someone who plays almost exclusively retro games these days -- on my 42" HDTV, pixelization and screen size issues be damned -- I don't personally see much need for this, and almost definitely wouldn't buy it myself if one were to be made, as I'd prefer to simply play my copy of Super Mario All-Stars + Super Mario World for the SNES using my modified Super Famicom with the component video-out cable I bought for it. I think those who enjoy classic gaming experiences are less likely to be too concerned with things like screen resolution or window size -- and honestly, expanding the viewable space in the classic Mario games would fundamentally change them, too, giving the player an added advantage that wasn't present in the original versions. For a purist, that could be a bridge too far, making pixel remasters of the classic Mario games less desirable. There's also the fact that Square's pixel remasters of the Final Fantasy games are... messy, to say the least. Framerate issues, ghosting (especially on the Switch version when played in docked mode), mediocre/lackluster arrangements of the classic music, and extremely inconsistent resolution from one screen layer to the next (text is not the same resolution as character portraits, which are not the same resolution as regular gameplay, which seriously triggers my OCD!) left something of a sloppy impression on many of us, and have soured us to the ideas of "pixel remasters" on the whole. To the point that hearing those two words spoken, at this point, triggers a bit of a fight-or-flight response in me. ;) That's not to say Nintendo shouldn't do this, as there definitely would be a market for it, as you yourself exemplify. I just... don't think it would quite be as big a market as all that. The Final Fantasy pixel remasters succeeded more because they offered people a way to play the classic games on modern systems, and in many cases offered them a chance to buy all six of the classic 8- and 16-bit Final Fantasies in one go -- that, more than anything, is the big selling point of the physical release that includes all six games on one card. And doing something like that with the original 5 games (and, heck, might as well throw Yoshi's Island in too for a cool 6!) would definitely have some appeal, albeit less than with the Final Fantasy set due to the existence of All-Stars on SNES and Wii already covering most of it. But if it were up to me, I'd say just bundle 100% pixel-for-pixel, cycle-for-cycle emulations of the games together on a single game card, and that's it. No need to "remaster" them.
Funny timing. I just finished the FFV Pixel Remaster the other day (I beat the FFIV & VI ones last year) and was lamenting on how we should have MORE remasters like those. I was thinking along the lines of other classic RPGs (where the option to turn off random encounters, set EXP multipliers etc is a godsend) such as Dragon Quest and co, but other kinds of games could benefit from it as well. I also had the thought while playing Super Mario Maker that to see the original 8-bit games in such bright & glorious high-def was a real treat, which made it more annoying that those graphics were "wasted" on mostly goofy community-made levels.
I applaud that effort! A lot of them are terrible! When I first heard of Mario maker I expected you could make 8 worlds and share them but obviously I was disappointed.
A fantastic video with a fantastic idea! If I were Nintendo, I would remake the originals in widescreen, and then do full remakes of each game in a style similar to Super Mario Bros. Wonder, and release them all together in one package.
My Amigo, it has been some time, got to love that Akihabara Electric Circus music right? keep on the awesome videos, I enjoyed way to much with beers and chicken wings the past videos. Btw, somehow I got Yoshihiko and I got to say, its one of the funniest shows I've seen, thanks for your review! Salud!
Yeah that’s the band! For some reason it’s gone viral despite being on yt for about 15 years and now there’s a huge comment thread there about GTV! Try to find it!!
My guess is Nintendo already makes plenty of money re-selling the original games each time they release a new console, so why bother putting in the effort just to compete with themself? They may also see it as devaluing the original games to admit they are flawed and could be improved upon. If the originals see a significant enough drop in sales, then they may put a remastered version out. But for now, they don't need to and they like seeing the numbers of how many units the original games still sell over generations.
Weren't those SMB3 glitches at the side of the screen hidden in the overscan area of 1980s TVs? (I didn't have an NES back then so I don't remember if these things were visible or not.) Keep hammering the correct pronunciation of "Bros.". An easy way to explain it is: "You don't pronounce 'Dr. Mario' as 'Durr Mario', do you? Well 'Bros.' works the same way!" I think a lot of younger people genuinely don't know and weren't taught this stuff in school. I saw a video about Ms. Pac-Man where the guy kept saying "Miss Pac-Man". He thought that "Ms." was an abbreviation for "Miss", and people in the comments stated that their teachers actually TOLD THEM THIS SAME THING! And it's really annoying when a TH-camr is corrected about these abbreviations, and instead of saying "Whoops, I've been pronouncing this wrong. Thanks for correcting me!", they double down and throw a tantrum in subsequent videos. When it was pointed out to one guy that even the Japanese people in their commercials say "Brothers", he started pronouncing it "Supa- Mario Bura-zaz" in subsequent videos instead of the normal English way. (Strangely, in Japanese, "Hammer Bros." is actually written ハンマーブロス, so the "Bros." part is pronounced like "bross", rhyming with "gloss", whereas "Mario Bros." is マリオブラザーズ, or "Mario Brothers".) The aforementioned "Miss Pac-Man" guy then released another video trying to justify the way he was pronouncing "Ms.".
Thanks for taking up the Bros./Brothers crusade! In a related vein of helpfulness, let me note that primer as you use it 1m in is pronounced with a short i (PRIMM-er). I disagree about making old games widescreen (the same way I would adhere to the original aspect ratio of a movie or TV show, whether the question is cutting off picture OR adding it) as it does affect gameplay somewhat, but otherwise this idea seems like a no-brainer.
There were plenty of platformer games with level editors in the '90s. Jill of the Jungle's was somewhat hidden (you had to press Ctrl+E from the main menu to access it) and was a bit awkward to use, but it was still there. Jetpack's level editor was one of it's best features. Jazz Jackrabbit 2 also came with the Jazz Creation System allowing users to create their own levels. Moving forward past the '90s a few years you had SuperTux, which released its first version in 2004. It has very, shall we say "Mario-inspired" gameplay and includes a full level editor. There have always been ways for people to make their own levels in 2D games; Mario Maker just got more marketing than most.
Among Famicom platformers, there were Lode Runner, Nuts & Milk, Wrecking Crew, and Solomon's Key 2... So mostly early games and mostly games without jumping!
I think your idea is nice. Another idea would be something like Sonic Mania, which threw in new zones and tweaked the layouts of old zones to create a fresh new game.
You pretty much covered all the reason why I was never a fan of this game in the first 2 minutes lol I totally agree, a pixel remaster of these Mario games would be great. Edit: I'd also like to have a remake of first Legend of Zelda
I never liked the first Zelda. Blasphemy I know. But it was too cryptic too confusing and the graphics were very plain. Only two music tracks basically that just repeat endlessly. Needs a major overhaul!
@@GTV-Japan Don't worry one of my favorite Zelda is Zelda II, the black sheep of the series lol I'd like to see a remaster of Adventure of Link but chances of this happening are very slim.
You mention the shadow as an improvement. to me its the reason why I have no interest in Mario maker. Is that a little extreme, perhaps. But I hate the way that looks with a passion. It makes no sense. Its a sky, not a wall. And even if it was, you wouldn't light a character with a light basically coming from the camera.
Yes! I would buy it. Would prefer a cartridge with all 5 over any sort of download though. Seeing the side by sides of the OG's and the similar styles in Mario Maker is night and day. Also agree with what a dissapointment the user created content is for MM. We need a curated section of the online mode with just levels that actually look and feel like they could be in a legit game. 99% of what's on there is trash.
Retro Game Mechanics Explained channel did a video about that "glitch" seam in SMB3 and why it happened. One thing to remember in the early 90s this wasn't usually seen on old school round-ish TVs back in the day due to overscan. It is just very noticeable now in emulation because it is pixel perfect. th-cam.com/video/wfrNnwJrujw/w-d-xo.htmlsi=m94VgEwgmUXjATOP
Hopefully without the shadows. It destroys the sense of the background being far away completely. Which I think was the original intent with clouds and distant mountains 😅
I'm surprised Nintendo's never done something similar to the mobile Sonic remasters, because it seems like it wouldn't take too much effort to remake it
It is, actually, a great idea. The NES/Famicom Mario games are absolutely fantastic. To me, Super Mario Bros. 3 is a superior game to Super Mario World, and Super Mario Bros. 2 (or Super Mario USA) was (and sometimes still is) unfairly maligned by some people. I LOVE Super Mario Bros. 2. Nintendo should make new remasters of the classic games, and throw the SNES games in for good measure. When I was at school (heck, I even did it in college), I also spent most of my time designing stages for games or copying sprites from screen captures in magazines in graph paper. Excellent video, as usual. Thank you very much.
I always hoped in vain Nintendo would accept my idea and make it a full game. Ha how stupid of me! Well I had a chance to make a robot boss in Megaman!
With your "Cosmic Fantasy Collection" & "Bomberman, Momotaro, Puyo Puyo" videos the English subtitles aren't showing up. Hopefully it can be fix. Nintendo kinda did the pixel remasters with the NES Remix series but I guess that series didn't sell enough for full length games. This is still an excellent idea that will make Nintendo millions easy! That trash ass Super Mario All-Stars Limited Edition on the Wii sold over 2 millions. Welp, here are some of mine: 1) Super Mario Brothers Deluxe would be the version that I choose. The vs mode was really fun. They can also add in more levels to race on & some extra new characters to play as. 2) Lost Levels: Add in the extras from Deluxe (Challenge mode, fortune teller, etc.) & use the All-Stars graphic. 3) For the rest I just want the GBA's Super Mario Advance series but here are some things that I really want to be done: 4) In Mario 3, make Mario's tail hit further out. I got hit more times using it since you gonna be so close to the enemy. 5) Make all games have the Deluxe's vs mode & Mario Bros. remake in them. Both modes have online support to fight/support people. All games can fight/support each others like ppl who only owns Mario 3 can play with ppl who only own Mario 1. 6) No save states BS! With infinite continues and saves, ppl should be able to beat it.........good luck on Lost Levels tho! Come on, Nintendo make it happen! Don't be lazy like with Super Mario 3D All-Stars!
That would be interesting, considering that people (like me) have bought these games a lot of times on different consoles I don't see any loss on trying it
While it COULD be awesome, if Nintendo remade them they'd probably add in mechanics that made the experience easier. Like extra flutters in jumping or the annoying wall cling from New Super Mario Bros.
Yep, would definitely buy if Nintendo did something like this. It could work and honestly I don't see anyone who could be upset over another "$50" Mario classic set. Great video as always!
I would love to see this happen, if only to see you become a Prophet!! I still haven't tried the FF pixel remaster yet. I worry the text may not be big enough for me to read in HH mode, my preferred way to play. Mario 1 wide-screen would be fun to play.
Yeah it can kind of be done. But there is no experience where you can go level by level like the real games. You’d always have to load up the next one and pray someone actually made it correctly too
I really hate the term "Pixel Remaster" that Square made, since if you make a game again with new spritwork then it's a remake, not a remaster. It would be cool to see super detailed sprite versions of the classic Mario games, though. I'd also love to see Zelda I and II remakes at some point.
A great video! Now that we are nearing 35-40 years of all of these Mario games, do you think these Mario NES games truly transcend generations... more specifically the newest generation? I think the people who grew up with these games (myself included) may be getting a little older to keep up with new hardware... or may not put time emphasis on enjoying games anymore. So that leaves the gen z/gen alpha kids who would potentially buy this in masses. Will they, or does this feel too much of a relic, and not worth their kid time? In the end, I think your idea is a great idea. Perhaps the original Mario games will keep standing the test of time. Perhaps the original gamers will never get too old for Mario. And with a tweak or two as you mentioned, Mario will look perfect and compete well with all of the latest competition directed toward the latest generation.
From personal experience I can say that kids born in the 21st century HATE 2D games. They find them very difficult and ugly. They prefer 3D games that have more freedom of movement and look realistic. Oh how many times in Odyssey did I hear complaining about the 2D areas and also swoop in to get those moons and save the day? I feels like at least 1000 times!
The OG gamer to the Odyssey rescue! Anyway, there's no stopping Mario and paying respect to his beginnings. I would like to see a few tweaks to the original games, making them perfect. Best wishes to you.
Lol so many people truly don't know that _bros._ is an abbreviation of _brothers._ Like, that's why the period is there, people. Similarly, _no._ is pronounced _number,_ but I've only met one person who didn't pronounce it "no". And then they tell me that they're right because everyone else says it that way now and tell me that i need to change how I say it... 😶
Are you serious?! So if there’s “No. 1” in text those people say no one and not number one? I can’t imagine it!! My poor 2nd grade English teacher would be turning over in her grave! I did hear that once in a Korean airport but it was an automated voice and it was for Koreans so that was kind of funny. But real life? Oh I weep for society!
@@GTV-Japan I don't know for sure, because the use in question was the place-holder pokemon "MissingNo.", but they all said that _no._ is not an abbreviation for _number_ in any circumstance because "That doesn't make sense. There's no O in _number."._ I don't know WHAT they'd say or think to see a "No. 1" written somewhere, but I think I would at least get to laugh at them, surely. I deserve that much after they got mad at me for saying it as _number._ 😆 Gotta love computer-spoken announcements! 🤣
@Schwarzorn well I blame education. In second grade we were taught many of these things so that in 3rd grade we could read full books that have all these things in them. We learned that English is a mishmash of other older languages and these changes get added over time and we learned them even though it makes no sense. And number is Latin for numero which is number and many abbreviations use the first and last letter. Just like mister as Mr. And most states doing the same. Connecticut as CT Delaware as DE. Sure there are exceptions like Ohio. Do you remember having to write business letters? You had to put the sender’s and recipient’s addresses and the date and all kind of strict rules about this and other things. All of that is lost! What do kids learn in school today? How to take selfies? I have no idea!
Honestly though? Considering the amount of times Nintendo has rereleased these games, I'm surprised they haven't given them a modern-day remaster treatment. I wouldn't mind if they decided to do that for Mario's 40th Anniversary next year... Gee, almost 40 years already?
YES!!! I've had this idea for years but I thought it was too specific of a request for most people to be on board with. Glad to see it being talked about! It's not even just Mario, basically all of Nintendo's 8 and 16 bit greats could use this treatment. Zelda, Metroid, Donkey Kong Country, Kirby, Earthbound, Star Fox and so on. I feel the need to point out that the Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters aren't exactly the same as this idea, the graphics are not replicating the originals but rather going for a new unified look.
Super Mario Bros. not being part of the 3D Classics line always rubbed me the wrong way. Excitebike, Kirby and Kid Icarus got some great touch-ups but those are the only meaty games that really benefitted from the release.
As much as I would love for this to happen, they likely won't ever do this due to Nintendo Switch Online. Why spend time and resources making a remake when you can just put the roms onto a membership and generate easy money
People keep saying that! But in another realm of media, similar people would spend all they have to watch the oldest prints of Star Wars. So there’s money to make on all sides!
Nintendo seems so set on re-releasing the Mario games as they were, this seems really unlikely, sadly. All-Stars was an anamoly of the time because nobody appreciated 8-bit in 1993. This probably wouldn't go wrong, but it could go wrong, and Nintendo seems too protective of their Mario IP to take that chance.
*notes that 40th anniversary of SMB1 is coming up next year*
Would you buy a remastered set of classic Mario games? I would!
Ummm, yeah. I'm a bit of a Nintendo simp.
Absolutely. I just checked out an emulator for 64 and marveled on how upscaled, smooth, and brought some new life to the Mario 64 game. I would pay if Nintendo really brought new life in these old games.
I would, especially if they added new official content like the GBA ports did.
they could've done it during the 3DS era...the 3D Classics versions of some of the NES games is prob the closest we'd get to a pixel remaster. But they stopped cause they said it was too resource intensive or somethingg
No to be honest, SMAS is enough for me.
My dream remake is SMB3 but fully 2D animated like Cuphead. The original game looks like a Terrytoons cartoon of the 50's.
Imagine GBC challenges with SNES graphics!
A lot of people are saying Mario Land should be included! Thanks for your opinions!!
@@GTV-Japan no problem :)
3:55 yeah reliving that moment when Cid sacrificed himself to distract the Red Wings...
.
Well we already know that he survived somehow?
In my view the definitive mario 2d collection would
- have all the 2d platformers released from smb to sml2
- every pre smb mario game as bonus (game n watch & the arcade games for example)
- advanced options system
- widescreen (4:3, 4:3 with borders, 16:9)
- graphics toggle (proto, original, modern)
- lives system toggle
- score (can deactivate and activate, and also reset score data)
- improved psychs and moveset options
- wall jumps, mid air spins, sideflips, handstands, spin jump
- enemy bounce (auto, smb1, smb2, modern)
- coyote time toggle
- mirror mode
- wl2 save system (allows you to save anywhere)
- smb1 having cutscenes that explains the plot based on the manuals & the korean board game
- smbdx features, bonuses & game modes
- smbs & tll as extra campaigns
- smb2 having FDS/YKDDP and Proto Death sfx as an option & level designs options (original and advance)
- smb3 having the advance 4 into cutscene, e reader levels & all stars' vs mode
- sml having extra levels
- sml2 having a hard mode
As for the art style, there's few possibilities
Could be wonder but tweaked, Yoichi Kotabe Artstyle, an advanced pixel art style based on vb mario land with GBA coloring, lineless
Great ideas you got there!
2:16
hot take: i think the concept of having lives in games should dissapear completely
they only exist because they were invented during arcade times, by having a lives system, there's motivation to use more quarters
That is quite a pipe dream but it’s exactly perfect
But they were a problem! Everyone remembers them. Well anyway the originals are still good 👍
@@GTV-Japan I took a look at some NES SMB3 CRT uploads on TH-cam. You're right that it could still be a problem, depending on the TV. Footage from this Sony Trinitron is the way I remember it (although I didn't have the same TV):
th-cam.com/video/nTqT7d3wOq8/w-d-xo.htmlsi=ggYD8rOok-2trxQU
This would print money. I would love this!!!!
Lukewarm take but, I'd really like to see the 2D games remastered in a hand drawn style like Yoichi Kotabe's promo art.
That's a good idea.
Wonder was the closest we've ever gotten to that, although they decided to make it 3d
I LOVE that they have Mario Maker custom levels with a twist. like 1-1 but it's got no floor. or 1-1 but it's sideways etc.
I feel like Most Kaizo Mario Rom Hacks tend to feel more balanced and fair than Mario Maker Kaizo Levels
I may be about a month late but still:
The SMW Pixel Remaster would _require_ to contain the Super Mario All-Stars + Super Mario World Luigi Sprites to get a purchase from me.
Can _anybody_ tell me why they weren't in the GBA Remake?!
Good points! At least the option! Cmon!! But he leave out the Super Mario Advance voices. Don’t need to hear lucky lucky lucky lucky 99 million times again.
Super Mario All Stars: Deluxe
Hell to the yeah!
Hmm! Maybe just expand those too?
@@GTV-Japan I mean, spreading the obstacles out or changing how the screen scrolls could be enough. I'm just saying until you've actually tried it you don't know how it will effect gameplay. Maybe Nintendo is aware and doesn't want to change the game? Or more likely they've just opted to innovate and make new Mario games. That is also Nintendo's style.
I would love a SML + SML2 in the 8-bit or 16-bit colour style, too!
I think that’s good. A lot of others say similar things. I think regardless it is time to overhaul SMB for the 20s!
If they do, hope they include the 6th game, mario world 2.
Small change I have yet to see is “proper” (blue) coloring on Mario’s sprite for 1 and 3. I know it was a limited color thing back then but now it should be a tiny fix.
Oh I knew I forgot something!! Excellent point! And they need eye whites too!
The reason why it was changed it's due to background blending with the shirt's and shoes' color
Altough instead of using the ugly green brown tone they could've just made it more purple
Good point!🌟
I wouldn't wishlist pixel remasters of the old Mario games because:
1) I've already played them, and I don't really go back and replay games I've already played anymore
2) I've played many a great 2D platformers that came out after the old-school Mario games that I feel like if I did replay the old Mario games, I'd just think they felt dated
I think a better idea would be for Nintendo to apply the Mario maker model to other, non-platformer Mario games.
For example, RPG Maker has been a think for ages now, so how about Nintendo put out a Paper Mario Maker or a Mario & Luigi Maker?
For one. A new Mario Paint!!!!!!
Just played a game with my students I call "Not Quite Mario" ---a Q&A sort of thing with Mario characters racing across the blackboard ;)
That’s a cool idea!
@roberthunter479 wow! Enjoy it!!
basically the GBA remakes in widescreen would be perfect
Now that you say it, they already have the engine with SM Maker 2. Except for Mario USA. Let's hope they're just waiting for Super Mario Bros. big anniversary in 2025.
I know I’m very excited for what they will do for super Mario 40
I'd buy it. What I really want is Adventures of Link remade with in a modern style (think smash bros link) as a metroidvania
Hmm!!
We’re coming up on the 40th anniversary, only a year away…👀👀👀
Yeah I better make a video about that to celebrate
I appreciate your honest take! Thanks for sharing 🌟
It is a more apt comparison but it’s 100% true I had this realization playing FFPP!
7:07 those are meant to be there... they're like clouds or star constelations or something... either way they're an intentional part of the game
(sorry for being an asshole, just wanted to point these thing out lol)
If you look at this video from 1990 you’ll see the side bar exists on the tv th-cam.com/video/b_ft_6nMnqo/w-d-xo.htmlfeature=shared especially 1:42. In direct capture it’s cropped to look better though
Mario Origins similar to Sonic Origins would be a day 1 buy for me.
Um, it's called Super Mario Allstars.
To the point that hearing those two words spoken, at this point, triggers a bit of a fight-or-flight response in me. ;)
That's not to say Nintendo shouldn't do this, as there definitely would be a market for it, as you yourself exemplify. I just... don't think it would quite be as big a market as all that.
Thanks for your opinions! A lot poster to be displeased with FF PP. I thought they were great. Except my personal
Preference for the PS 1 soundtracks!
I love XP boost!
Yes, I would definitely buy that especially if here in Japan they offered some special collaboration
Ive been trying to make a whole game w interesting and authentic feeling levels. I noticed most are just nonsense
I applaud that effort! A lot of them are terrible! When I first heard of Mario maker I expected you could make 8 worlds and share them but obviously I was disappointed.
7:05 That's scenery. Not artifacts. The NES wouldn't make them look like that even if they were artifacts.
Technically artifacts are anything made by humans left behind and discovered later. So scenery is still an artifact in a sense.
@@GTV-Japan Artifacts when referring to video game graphics mean graphics that are unintended visuals that don't look right.
@levisjammin they DON’T look right!
@@GTV-Japan They're supposed to be clouds shaped as the powerups.
@levisjammin ahhh. Hmmm
A fantastic video with a fantastic idea! If I were Nintendo, I would remake the originals in widescreen, and then do full remakes of each game in a style similar to Super Mario Bros. Wonder, and release them all together in one package.
I like how there were several “layers” of background and foreground. It was the best part of the game.
I want now ❤
My Amigo, it has been some time, got to love that Akihabara Electric Circus music right? keep on the awesome videos, I enjoyed way to much with beers and chicken wings the past videos.
I can see that argument 🌟
Weren't those SMB3 glitches at the side of the screen hidden in the overscan area of 1980s TVs? (I didn't have an NES back then so I don't remember if these things were visible or not.)
Keep hammering the correct pronunciation of "Bros.". An easy way to explain it is: "You don't pronounce 'Dr. Mario' as 'Durr Mario', do you? Well 'Bros.' works the same way!"
I think a lot of younger people genuinely don't know and weren't taught this stuff in school.
(Strangely, in Japanese, "Hammer Bros." is actually written ハンマーブロス, so the "Bros." part is pronounced like "bross", rhyming with "gloss", whereas "Mario Bros." is マリオブラザーズ, or "Mario Brothers".)
The aforementioned "Miss Pac-Man" guy then released another video trying to justify the way he was pronouncing "Ms.".
Yeah! Durr Mario! I like that one 😂 and what is Jr. Pac-Man? Jurrr?? I won’t even get into any game that ends with DX…
And as far as the overscan area, I looked at a few vids online of people using an old CRT TV and it’s there! 😮
I think the best thing would be a remaster of the advanced series
I’d like that!
I will fight until the final broze is gone!
I would buy a Pixelremaster for sure.
But this could take a while. Keep in mind Nintendo still hasn't added Super Mario Land 1 for gameboy on NSO
I know! What the frig right?!
I suppose these were PC? I didn’t have one! 😿
I see some of that in Odyssey too
You pretty much covered all the reason why I was never a fan of this game in the first 2 minutes lol
I totally agree, a pixel remaster of these Mario games would be great.
Edit: I'd also like to have a remake of first Legend of Zelda
I never liked the first Zelda. Blasphemy I know. But it was too cryptic too confusing and the graphics were very plain. Only two music tracks basically that just repeat endlessly. Needs a major overhaul!
@@GTV-Japan Don't worry one of my favorite Zelda is Zelda II, the black sheep of the series lol
I'd like to see a remaster of Adventure of Link but chances of this happening are very slim.
@Randhrick my brother!
Having used Photoshop for almost 30 years now I’m just a fan of drop shadow.
@@GTV-Japanyes, but this isn't a logo, it doesn't fit.
Yeah but I just like it!
Honestly pixel remasters of the nes mario games would be pretty interesting I hope they do this in the 40th anniversary of Mario
40! But yeah please god!!!
Agreed! But I have no idea how you could filter maker levels properly

Someone said Miyamoto has a bias against the old, 2D titles, because he didn't really liked working on them in the 80's.
Who knows! 🌟
Hopefully without the shadows. It destroys the sense of the background being far away completely. Which I think was the original intent with clouds and distant mountains 😅
Others have said they dislike shadows too.
I'm surprised Nintendo's never done something similar to the mobile Sonic remasters, because it seems like it wouldn't take too much effort to remake it
Well basically the engine is there in Mario Maker! They make all kinds of stages already!!!
@@GTV-JapanYou designed a robot master in Mega Man???
@GimblyGFR yes. Pot Man!
@@GTV-JapanWhich game?
@GimblyGFR I entered the contest and lost. Like most
Because Nintendo thinks "OLD BAD, NEW GOOD" unless they want to loan you a handful of ROMs for $50 a year.
Tell us how you really feel! 🌟
I love how you used the Akihabara Electric Circus Mario 3 album as BGM.
It’s my favorite record
@@GTV-Japan you’ve got great taste! Do you own it by any chance?
@Mike09017 yes
@@GTV-Japan nice 😎 (btw, where can I get the Super Mario World jazz disc?)
@Mike09017 it’s not in TH-cam? Try Mercari?
2:13 it's like if you didn't know what super world are
Kind of like if Sly wasn’t aware.
Welp, here are some of mine:
1) Super Mario Brothers Deluxe would be the version that I choose. The vs mode was really fun. They can also add in more levels to race on & some extra new characters to play as.
2) Lost Levels: Add in the extras from Deluxe (Challenge mode, fortune teller, etc.) & use the All-Stars graphic.
3) For the rest I just want the GBA's Super Mario Advance series but here are some things that I really want to be done:
4) In Mario 3, make Mario's tail hit further out.
What? I’ll look at that today! Thanks for the heads up. I can easily read subs because I keep the scripts on file.
Cause Nintendo rather just re-release whatever they have, cause it's easier...and fans will still eat it up (myself included at times)
It’s true!
That would be interesting, considering that people (like me) have bought these games a lot of times on different consoles I don't see any loss on trying it
That’s the thing I’d be totally down even though I’ve done it over and over
While it COULD be awesome, if Nintendo remade them they'd probably add in mechanics that made the experience easier. Like extra flutters in jumping or the annoying wall cling from New Super Mario Bros.
That would be good!
Yep, would definitely buy if Nintendo did something like this. It could work and honestly I don't see anyone who could be upset over another "$50" Mario classic set. Great video as always!
I don’t think so either. Especially if each are sold for 10 a pop
Make Peach and Toad playable characters in all games, and allow customization of how powerups and health work
Good ideas!!!!!
Yoshi....eats DOLPHINS????? Ecco NOOOOO!!!!!!
I hadn’t thought of that but. Ha!
I would love to see this happen, if only to see you become a Prophet!!
I still haven't tried the FF pixel remaster yet. I worry the text may not be big enough for me to read in HH mode, my preferred way to play.
Mario 1 wide-screen would be fun to play.
It’s a little small but cmon try it
I think the fans already made a widescreen version of Super Mario World, but it would be cool if Nintendo did that for the Famicom games.
I know! What’s the holdup??🌟🌟🌟
In theory, couldn’t this idea be created using super Mario maker?
-edit-
Just got to the Mario USA section. Good point!
Yeah it can kind of be done. But there is no experience where you can go level by level like the real games. You’d always have to load up the next one and pray someone actually made it correctly too
Well, we are about to hit 40 years of Mario and the end of the Switch... it could happen!
No. The Switch will never end!!🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Funny. I wondered almost the same thing at the end of one of my most recent videos.
I’ll have to go back and see. Sorry I’ve been so busy making. No time for watching 😞
@@GTV-Japan
Much appreciated, but do take your time.
@GamingDelight I got time now. Obviously! ⏰ just don’t expect me to be here after 5:40!
I really hate the term "Pixel Remaster" that Square made, since if you make a game again with new spritwork then it's a remake, not a remaster.
It would be cool to see super detailed sprite versions of the classic Mario games, though. I'd also love to see Zelda I and II remakes at some point.
Yes but what has become “a remake” has changed too. Also since these games come from japan all English rule ms go out the window
@jordans4827 thanks you too
Lol so many people truly don't know that _bros._ is an abbreviation of _brothers._ Like, that's why the period is there, people.
I deserve that much after they got mad at me for saying it as _number._ 😆
Gotta love computer-spoken announcements! 🤣
@Schwarzorn oh. Then it’s even more baffling because every Pokemon has a number
@@GTV-Japan Humans are a mystery. 😂
Yeah almost! I better make an hour long video for that!
Yes, I would buy a remaster of the 5 games especially 3 and World.
I wouldn't say it's worthwhile except if Nintendo don't add a bunch of extras and tweaks to the games you can choose from
Before I made the video I looked up if it had been talked about. Not really and I’m surprised. Here’s to a new movement!
I thought Super Mario Bros 3 had a sort of weird colour scheme for the most part of it's a 1/3 of Mario signature art style that highlit the series
Agreed 🌟
So basically a Mario equivalent of the Classic Sonic mobile ports/Sonic Origins?
Yes. Certainly.
Super Mario Bros. not being part of the 3D Classics line always rubbed me the wrong way. Excitebike, Kirby and Kid Icarus got some great touch-ups but those are the only meaty games that really benefitted from the release.
Yes! kid Icarus was great!!!! The backgrounds really made the game much better
I've been replaying these games throughout my life, trying out different versions here and there. I'd buy a pixel remaster classic Mario collection.
7:05 This isn't a bug, this is an intentional easter egg.
It is strange how 8-bit came back into fashion!
