Ok, now do that with the engine in the car an there's 2 inches of clearance, without jacking up the engine and removing the mount.
Ha I have 1/2" clearance on mine can't even get an offset wrench in there

An Alan key works better. Just find the one that fits the snuggest and the tensioner will not start to slip. Or even bend the cheap tool. Alan keys are harder steel. I was helping a fellow mechanic out one day he forgot the belt routing and I had just finished one on the same engine different car not 5 minutes prior to him and asked if I could slip the belt on for him. No problem little buddy. As I was doing this his tiny tool…oops his soft tiny tool lol slipped out of the hole ( don’t you just hate when that happens! Lol!! ) and hit me in the face near my eye. As it was I was wearing my prescription safety glasses. Thought you were going to catch me on that one didn’t you? So lesson learned and class is dismissed 😊
You're fortunate to have a car with front space, some have no space it can be a nightmare just changing that belt.
Your right i got lots of room, this D.i.y. was a process of a Engine swap better to chance the belt while i got tons of area to work

This is why I love my old truck "1997 ford ranger 2.3" so easy to work on and reliable and when things do break its always in the 30-200 dollar range and can be replaced easily in an afternoon in my driveway with basic hand tools and a floor jack. My favorite vehicle so far one day I'll make it a race truck for being so good to me 😊

I would say, depends on what car you have. Some cars have very little space to replace the belt, but of course anyone can do it.. Just be patient, do your research about what tools you need and be careful,, you don’t want your tool loose contact with the tensioner while you are placing the belt,, you might hurt your hands bad.

This looks like a TSI used in numerous VAG cars. Depending on which the belt might not be this accessible without either going in through the wheel well or you might be able to remove some mounted components to get at it from above.

Great when you have so much room to do this. On a east west mounted engine often is not enough room for hands or tools. Find that frustrating.... 😂.

Not all tensioner have this style pin hole.
@@jfGarage4k thanks , I recently used an old set of mini bike handle bars to put over the end of the 3/8drive ratchet for more leverage and locked it in place by using a tie down strap from the handle bars to the front end hardware behind a front tire lol
Worked but the pin hole would be nicer and this one didn’t have one that I could see so 🤷🏻♂️it should be standard on those dang tensioners 🫠
im trying to learn from these videos to install a serpentine but nobody is showing the belt going around the fan. it has to go around the fan to get in there right?
On This video Audi a4 2.0t engine have no engine fan pulley. It has a Electric fan

Can you spray wd40 on the pivot area of the tensioner pulley? I noticed mine when i initially turn on the ac, a slight sound of a knocking noise occurs. But when my engine is warmed up. There's no knocking sound.
I use an Allen wrench for the hole, I don't trust pull pin thingies.
I work at an Audi dealer as a technician, I picked up a set of punches from harbor freight and got the one that was the perfect size for the tensioners on Audis and cut it into three pins that I now use for tensioners. Never failed me and they hold good.
@@thegoldentheory might I ask,,, in the past when an Audi broke a timing belt it blew the computer and bent every valve, they still do that?
@@Chris-un4ns all newer Audis use timing chains now. I think they stopped using belts around 2008 with the last of the TSI engines. The newer engines with chains don’t have many issues, all the V6 engines I’ve never seen any failures or timing faults. The V8 engines are the same. They do make a rattle noise on a startup but it’s nothing to worry about as long as it’s not longer than like 3 seconds. The 2.0 liter turbo engines, they have a lifespan of about 100k miles for the timing chains. It’ll set a fault for camshaft timing over advanced or something along those lines. In the rare case that one of the 2.0 liters does skip timing, it’s rare for it to skip enough that it takes out a valve or two. The newer pistons have indents in them for that purpose. I have seen it once in my two years at Audi.
@@Chris-un4ns also I have 5 Audis right now, one of them is a 2001 A4 1.8 turbo with the timing belt and I just make sure to check on the timing belt so it doesn’t let go. 2002 Audi S4, car is a junk car as I bought it just to swap parts into my A4. Engine blew up because previous owner didn’t service the timing belt (lol). 2013 Audi S5 and 2014 Audi SQ5, they both have the 3 liter supercharged engine and it’s by far the most reliable engine I think Audi has ever made. And then I have a 2016 A4 with the 2.0 turbo.

What happens if you put the belt in a worng position?
If it did not sit on all the teeth it will spoil the belt
If putting wrong position could cause belt tension problem....so it's best to place it the original position
Usually if I forgot how I put the belt...I don't need books or some sort....just Google it then you know how the serpentine belt position
Tougher with a big fan cutting up your hands but definitely not impossible

If you've never changed one of those before you obviously have not if that conflicts while you had his fingers in those who's very well easily lose a finger don't ever become a mechanic you'll probably become a victim of leaving a jack without a safety and having the car fall on you

Hello.. to remove the pulley.. do you have to lock it in place with the pin or you can just remove the belt and remove the pulley after ?

Take the belt off and Double check all the pulley, make sure they all tight & Not loose this cost to jump the belt

What is that pin called ?
Not sure the name, Its just a metal piece laying around the shop. Best tool to use for this is a narrow skinny 3 to 4 Inches long bolt or a nail
