this thing is epic! just wish you guys would just show the content, what is all this other random stuff in the video, I mean these like 1:30 before the content actually starts and then there's a domain.com ad in the middle!!!! just frankly annoying
Its funny now that i think of it. Im 13, have none of the proffesional equipment you have but i still keep coming back for more. Thank you guys for making me get more into film and showing me my passion. Ps : I'm doing a project for school and im cutting someones head off using after effects. - Chris H

Just recently picked one of these up and mainly running a GH4 on it. Still trying to get the right settings with it on how we use it but there's some really good tips in here. Thaaaaaaaanks!
You looked like you were having fun with it, nicely comfortable, at LSCC. Just the one or did you have a couple of units doing the rounds? How much does a piece of kit like this usually go for?
Love your videos Ryan and Josh and the film riot team. Have helped me through some tough times with your humor, and dropped knowledge on me along the way. Keep being awesome and don't forget to uppercut the butt.
Seriously you guys at Film Riot helped me solve so many problems in my production. It's still just in the beginning stages, but you've helped a lot. Thank you!
That would be cool if there was a video series of having three or more film makers using the same location same actors same every thing but have them write their own story and see how they compare. It would also be pretty cool if someone did the same thing but with the same story and see how they shoot the whole thing
Before watching this video, I was of the mind that more technology doesn't equal better end product, but after seeing the initial shots from the Ronin, I'm sold. I have a steady cam and it's great, but I don't have near the flexibility you have with the Ronin. I can't believe how cheap these stabilizers are compared to when they first hit the market. I still think nothing is as important as a tripod and fluid head, but wow, those stabilizers really give you options. Thanks for sharing your experience with it and keep up the great work.
Jason Nolan Yeah I saw that. I think you're probably on the right track, but there is definitely a shift in focus at 7:32, which was what prompted my curiosity
What a cool piece of equipment, shots were amazing. I just got a stabilizer myself, and this one seems like it was sent from the film gods! Price and all. Awesome,
When I saw 3 films, Connolly, Worley, and Kramer! I said out loud. "Oh my God". At the exact same time Ryan did in the trailer! haha Couldn't be more excited for this! Also, Ronin=love!
where was that bridge in the final steady cam shot? I know you're based out of Texas now, but it looks a lot like one on my college campus back in Buffalo NY.
I'm having a problem. at (3:55-3:58) you can see your ronin panning left and right. The area your battery connects clears that vertical bar of the stand with ease. For some reason my rig (and battery) cannot clear the stand and basically smashes into it. I don't see any way I can get around this. Can someone HELP!??
Compared to a fully-fledged stedicam (with an arm), it's entry-skill requirement is significantly less. It's easier and quicker to configure, balance, and operate. That being said, because a stedicam has vertical axis stabilization, a stedicam operated by a professional highly-skilled operator will always win.
Kyle Van Tonder Another thing to consider is that a merlin and steadicam is quite large but a Gimbal is incredibly small. It's like a fig rig or tripod on a dolly, The tripod is much smoother but there's no way you can fit it through a window.
I agree with Lucas ... the Gimbal is far more versatile and affordable for the prosumer videographer. The ability to add this type of mobility to any shot greatly increases the production value ... and only the film snobs will notice the bobbles or difference while the majority will be very impressed.
Hey Ryan i recently purchased a DJI Ronin '' i mean my dad bought it for me'' and a canon 5D Miii, when i set my camera on the DJI Ronin since i have to grab it with my both hands i can no longer reach the lens for focusing while shooting, so my question is should i switch my lens and camera on AF while shooting or there is another way to have well focused footages ?????? please help if can't fix this focusing issues i will have to give up on making movies and maybe become aP *.o*.*r.*n.*. actor i guess you dont want that. RAYN, YOU ARE THE REAL MVP ( thank you ) .
Thanks for the share about the $500 off at B&H. I've been playing with the idea of getting a dji ronin for awhile and this along with your review pushed me over the edge. So it's on the way and I have you to thank for the extra $500 bones still in the bank, thanks and keep the great work coming.
It is 20% of now... Just noticed it... AND I AM SO EXCITED!!! GAAAAHHH! I am really looking forward to all these new shortfilms and especially the behind the scenes :D
Hey Ryan, Loved the video and I'm super excited for the Epic Summer you guys are doing. Do you think these kinds of stabilizers are going to bring about a revolution in indie filmmaking the same way dslrs did when they started getting adopted for filmmaking?
EPIC SUMMER SO EPIC it takes over Spring too!! yeah thats 'cause, Summer is throwin down the Turbulent Displacement on Springs FACE! and thats just EPIC MAN! :P
Which monitor/monitor cables are you using when you have the camera on the Ronin? I have a Ronin-M and the thinnest, most flexible HDMI cable I could find and it still throws off the motors enough to make it unusable.
You really need crouching tiger moves, ninja like stealth and then like sergeant Doakes said 'you don't walk, you glide motherlover. Like a lizard on ice'. Unfortunately there's no real 4-axis gimbal yet that takes out the up and down movement of walking. For me, the Ronin is nice, but a bit pricey and way to heavy and big. Now the pistol grip gimbals are making their way. The Nebula 4000 kind of started this... but motion looked very twitchy, you can see the system making calculations then stearing the gimbal motors to counteract movement. I'm looking forward to the Pilotfly H1 which looks pretty friggin' sweet and the movement looks rather organic. I bet we'll get to see quite a few of these kind of devices over the next few months. I think this is a great entry level (they go for around 700/750-ish bucks) and keeps things, especially when using mirrorless systems like the A7S and GH4, very subtle, compact and lightweight. That said. Looking forward to the Film Riot EPIC Summer! Keep it up you guys.
Hey Ryan, just wondering if you still use the original Ronin? I'm looking to purchase one but since it is discontinued by DJI I'm a little hesitant. I've been looking at the Crane3s as well. Looking for the payload so the Ronin and the Crane3s are the choices. I can't even come close to a Ronin 2 so that is out of the question in terms of financial means. Just thought I would pick your brain on this.
does the top camera come with the DJI Ronin? you mentioned the top accessories and I saw a smaller camera that is used to view footage when you start shooting and i was wondering what was that camera or view screen and does it come with the DJI Ronin?
I've noticed that lately, the audio quality on FR has much improved. As little as a year ago, the sibilant range was really muffled, even in Ryan's VO. Is it better compression? EQ? Or better mic/preamp/recorder? Or maybe, a quieter space to record, requiring less post-processing?
Hey, how did you attach your HDMI Cable to the cam and the Ninja Blade. Is there some not so stiff HDMI Cable you are using or some magic Film Riot thingy?!?
Question: Why is everyone using the Myriad typeface as their main font? Like here, at Apple, everywhere in Hong Kong, Adobe (kind of), Cinema Sins etc.
Ryan, I am shooting a found footage film where time is frozen. I know you've already done TWO episodes on this but I wanted to know how to freeze time and have someone interact with an object, then have that person leave the object frozen IN MID AIR. I have a few ideas in mind but I would really love your professional input and a lot of people (I'm sure) would love to know. Thank you for your time, Ryan! also...I'm a HUGE fan!!!
2017 and this might still be the best bang for the buck gimbal. Incredibly smooth, durable and a huge payload (7.5 kg). The equivalent to that would be the Movi Pro which is 6 times more expensive
Any comments on the noise of the motors? I've read from around the interwebs that using a mic (e.g. a rode videomic) attached on the ronin or the camera is impossible because the motors make such a loud noise it ruins your audio. Is this true?
Awesome sauce! This is definitely on my "to buy" list. Also, can you please do a video on how to make a DIY lightsaber prop? I've seen some other stuff but it's never helped me. Thanks!
I spent a few days this week getting to know the ronin on our student project, which turned into a nightmare as we stripped down a sony F5 into an ever smaller and smaller unit and it was still to large and kept fouling on the gimble arms. Would have been awesome to use, but now we're brushing up on our steadicam skills. Do you have any clips from the ronin while following an actor up and down stairs indoors?

Even though I love the video intro and admire it, I'd love to maybe see just a different intro, with a different theme of colors and a different set of animations. Anyway, love the show Ryan! Keep up the good work!
what was the original price of the ronin1? its now about 1200€. just asking because i am gambeling for a higer price drop after the ronin2 is more available in europe.
I keep coming back to this video for balancing. Better than the official DJI video to show how to balance.
this thing is epic! just wish you guys would just show the content, what is all this other random stuff in the video, I mean these like 1:30 before the content actually starts and then there's a domain.com ad in the middle!!!! just frankly annoying
oh my god I haven't heard the name Andrew Kramer in years, I used to watch his tutorials all of the time
Its funny now that i think of it. Im 13, have none of the proffesional equipment you have but i still keep coming back for more. Thank you guys for making me get more into film and showing me my passion.
Ps : I'm doing a project for school and im cutting someones head off using after effects.

Hey chris, i'm 15 and in a special school that is for core and for film, i'm thinking of buying it atm

Ronin review at 2:00
But first, self promotion!
Michael Carr they gotta pay for this free content somehow
Just recently picked one of these up and mainly running a GH4 on it. Still trying to get the right settings with it on how we use it but there's some really good tips in here. Thaaaaaaaanks!

Love those shots, especially the one on the bridge and the picnic table.
What camera and what lens did you use in this video?
Seriously you guys at Film Riot helped me solve so many problems in my production. It's still just in the beginning stages, but you've helped a lot. Thank you!

I'm convinced after researching for a year now, GETTIN THE RONIN! Thx guy! The info was great!!
D.Green Photography I'm stuck deciding, Ronin or osmo plus tripod plus steadicam
I can't decide which is more practical for me! Any suggestions?
I am so glad you got some snow! That is more snow than we have had in northern Minnesota in the last month or so. :)
You must have to have a bluetooth follow focus rig, right? How would you keep your moving subject in focus?
I wondered that too. Here's to that being answered!
He shot wide with a small f stop so as long as he wasn't too close everything stayed in focus. Methinks.
Jason Nolan Yeah I saw that. I think you're probably on the right track, but there is definitely a shift in focus at 7:32, which was what prompted my curiosity
Auto focus? Maybe...
iCan? orCam?
Very great review! And I have to point out, the green screen keying and light is on point! Super clean image, it's very lovely!
Uber impressed by that test footage. There's some silky smooth camera movement going on there...
Youre in Texas and its snowing... I live in North Carolina and its still 70 degrees... Absolutely makes sense.
This is incredible! You guys are absolutely awesome! So grateful to what you've contributed to filmmaking and independent creatives.
That test footage is gorgeous!
What a cool piece of equipment, shots were amazing. I just got a stabilizer myself, and this one seems like it was sent from the film gods! Price and all. Awesome,
Your channel is SO frikkin good!
wait so is there a difference between the dji ronin and dji ronin m?
+BluMaan Ronin M is the basic "mobile" version. It's smaller, I think, or at least can't carry as much weight.
+Max Randall Yeah the Ronin M cant carry as much load and its about $3000 cheaper then the regular Ronin.
+BluMaan """"""M"""""""
Andrew was meant to have finished his film 5 months ago... That's almost half a year after the deadline...
he worked on Star Wars give the man a break lol
I guess I'll let him off, it was a great movie!
Now that looks like a Great tool to have in the arsenal. I didn't realize you could control the positioning. Thank you for this in-depth tutorial.
Finally! been waiting for this review!
When I saw 3 films, Connolly, Worley, and Kramer! I said out loud. "Oh my God". At the exact same time Ryan did in the trailer! haha Couldn't be more excited for this!
Also, Ronin=love!
I said ' No fucking way.." but in the same vein.
where was that bridge in the final steady cam shot? I know you're based out of Texas now, but it looks a lot like one on my college campus back in Buffalo NY.
I'm so excited for the summer event! Can't wait!
PLEASE make again some short staring Stark! He is the man!
Jesus those test shots looked amazing
I'm having a problem. at (3:55-3:58) you can see your ronin panning left and right. The area your battery connects clears that vertical bar of the stand with ease. For some reason my rig (and battery) cannot clear the stand and basically smashes into it. I don't see any way I can get around this. Can someone HELP!??
Cannot wait to see it! I am so excited! Thank you for your amazing videos!
you might want to turn down your stiffness. It will get rid of the little jitters and help battery life a bit.
question... how u guys deal with the aperture , i mean if u and tryna keep a narrow dof ?
+Julio Ruiz same thing I was wondering
+Julio Ruiz +adotwhite ND Filters or a lot of light.
Really excited for the summer!
When did Gimbals start to become popular and whats the benefits of one over a stedicam/glidecam
I have a glidecam and its a pain in the arse. This looks way easier to set-up and operate.

Lucas Hutchinson Very good point. It's especially useful in run and gun scenarios.
I agree with Lucas ... the Gimbal is far more versatile and affordable for the prosumer videographer. The ability to add this type of mobility to any shot greatly increases the production value ... and only the film snobs will notice the bobbles or difference while the majority will be very impressed.
Like how you cliffhung with the ad before showing the test shots.
Being from Florida, do you guys fear the snow? I am currently living in Florida where snow is a terrifying concept.
Where I live, in Quebec, Canada, we have 4-5 months of snow! With only snow, and cold temperature ! Why do you fear the snow?
Tommy Cornellier Just a few days ago we thought spring is coming.
Then, more snow! XD.
Well I'm from Massachusetts.. So for me, snow is snow problem :P
New Yorkers don't fear snow..they sniff too much of it
Hi, how do you pull focus while holding that? Or were those shots all auto-focus?
It's always nuts, how it takes so much work to make a shot look effortless.
6:25 Love that music…! Very Burtonesque.
Where does it come from?
Hey Ryan i recently purchased a DJI Ronin '' i mean my dad bought it for me'' and a canon 5D Miii, when i set my camera on the DJI Ronin since i have to grab it with my both hands i can no longer reach the lens for focusing while shooting, so my question is should i switch my lens and camera on AF while shooting or there is another way to have well focused footages ?????? please help if can't fix this focusing issues i will have to give up on making movies and maybe become aP *.o*.*r.*n.*. actor i guess you dont want that.

What monitor setup did you use for your ronin???
It's an Atomos Ninja Blade.
It is 20% of now... Just noticed it...
AND I AM SO EXCITED!!! GAAAAHHH! I am really looking forward to all these new shortfilms and especially the behind the scenes :D
Dear Ryan,
You should make a DYI of a Ronin! That Rig is CRAZY!
that Ronin footage is magical...
Very excited! although, come up to NH in April...its not event spring at that point up here!
Hey Ryan, Loved the video and I'm super excited for the Epic Summer you guys are doing. Do you think these kinds of stabilizers are going to bring about a revolution in indie filmmaking the same way dslrs did when they started getting adopted for filmmaking?
this is literally the coolest thing I have ever seen
Ugh that footage looks so beautiful.... I want one of those gimbals soo badly
EPIC SUMMER SO EPIC it takes over Spring too!! yeah thats 'cause, Summer is throwin down the Turbulent Displacement on Springs FACE! and thats just EPIC MAN! :P
Wow looks better than I thought. Another thing to add to the shopping list!
Super excited for Epic Summer!
The fact that b-roll has filmic look blows my mind.
Really excited for this, especially the Andrew Kramer film.
Which monitor/monitor cables are you using when you have the camera on the Ronin? I have a Ronin-M and the thinnest, most flexible HDMI cable I could find and it still throws off the motors enough to make it unusable.
This is a DOPE DJI Ronin vid. Will be bookmarking this.
Happy 1st anniversary.
Thank you. More shots of the Ronin in operation that parallel the wanted footage? You guys rock.

Great music on your short film...love it!
Andrew Kramer: in June!
6 1/2 months later...
+Thomas Baker He was doing VFX on Star Wars. Give him a break!
+Thomas Baker They didn't tell us the year... :D Could be June 2016
He worked on Star Wars!
9 1/2 months later....
Who cares! He just released one of the sickest free plugins ever called Saber! Seriously it's so cool I downloaded it already, videocopilot dot net

Ryan, I am shooting a found footage film where time is frozen. its started on my birthday
thanks for the epic present :)
What kind of equipment do you use to protect your gear in rain/snow?
Any comments on the noise of the motors? I've read from around the interwebs that using a mic (e.g. a rode videomic) attached on the ronin or the camera is impossible because the motors make such a loud noise it ruins your audio. Is this true?
Did you add stabilization to the footage or does it really operate that smooth?
It has a unique look to it, I kinda like it.
Awesome sauce! This is definitely on my "to buy" list. Also, can you please do a video on how to make a DIY lightsaber prop? I've seen some other stuff but it's never helped me. Thanks!
hey! how did you keep your subject in focus while doing these test shots with the ronin - when you were going in closer/moving back, etc.?
I spent a few days this week getting to know the ronin on our student project, which turned into a nightmare as we stripped down a sony F5 into an ever smaller and smaller unit and it was still to large and kept fouling on the gimble arms. Would have been awesome to use, but now we're brushing up on our steadicam skills.
Do you have any clips from the ronin while following an actor up and down stairs indoors?
That is a sweet piece of pro gear.
I just bought a MX and was wondering if there was a way around the camera protruding out over the top of the camera I'm guessing the heaviest model of this gimbal is the answer?
What camera was Ryan using for filming the test shots!? At around 6:00 in
I'm assuming the Canon C100.
Paul Ocone Thanks!
So how about pulling focus?
Joel Chr if you have the budget for a DJI Ronin, then you'd likely be able to afford a wireless follow focus, which would probably be controlled by a focus puller, which would be in a larger scale production (probably the sort which would use a Ronin).
I hit the like button before I even start the episode.
I used a Ronin equipped with a FS700 and primes on a recent shoot, we had problem after problem with it, especially with the calibrations and rebalancing after switching lenses. I suppose the Ronin is made for more compact camera bodies such as C100/300, 5D, Epic, etc?
What size dimensions are you filming in to make a "movie" type look
Are you guys ever going to do an up date on the DJI Ronin like an updated episode or bts with it please
Would love to see how you would compare this to the new Ronin S. I realize they are different tools but with a common purpose.
April 2nd is my birthday :D
Thanks Ryan! Film Riot
OMG I'm so stoked about the Epic summer!!
I know we can create robotic horses and stuff but this just made my jaw drop. I don't know why I'm impressed from this more than the robotic horse but that is some sweet use of.. gravity.
great video ! can you teach us how to make an badass explosion effect behind your back on the next episode please ?!
Last song? plz
Do you think it's a difference in the ronin m then the regular ronin ?
Even though I love the video intro and admire it, I'd love to maybe see just a different intro, with a different theme of colors and a different set of animations. Anyway, love the show Ryan! Keep up the good work!
what was the original price of the ronin1? its now about 1200€.
just asking because i am gambeling for a higer price drop after the ronin2 is more available in europe.
