    FINALLY!!!! I've been waiting 4-Ever! Lol. I cannot speak highly enough of the Savage Sword of Conan Omnibus hardcovers. Yes, they run about 100.00 each, but they are the complete magazines in large format. The books are AMAZING! The even have all the cover art by artists like Frazetta and others.

    My art is comic book old school. Buscema was always realistic in his work. Check out his advertising art and early Avengers issues. Fantastic video, Rich.

    I love big John's work. That Thor issue looks more like Sal's work. My favorite of John's work is the epic Thor Annual #5: War of the Gods and virtually everything in the Conan books with Ernie Chan. One of the things I love about John's work in addition to the storytelling are the faces of the villains and the women. I'm not as familiar with his surfer work. The volume of work he did was extraordinary as well.

    I literally learn how to draw figures by copying Buscema's Conan. Savage Sword of Conan was immensely popular in Greece during the 80's and the 90's. They were printed in big size single issues, but also in smaller size omnibuses sold in news kiosks.

    I'd forgotten how much movement was in this stuff; it's really great. I also love his earlier Marvel work when he was doing full pencils. Check out Sub-Mariner #1-8; there's just more there. Avengers #49-50 have John's own inks and it's really savage looking; lots of action in Olympus.
    At a certain point, he gave up on the full pencils and started doing breakdowns. It's good because his fundamentals are so good, but it's also watered down compared to what he was capable of in illustration. The change was partly for mercenary reasons, but also (according to a Romita interview in, I think, the Kirby Collector), Buscema got really into drawing Silver Surfer# 4 with Thor and used a lot of Hal Foster influence in his portrayal of Asgard. Stan allegedly tore it apart, because he was stuck on Kirby's version. Buscema was so deflated by the dressing down that it apparently made him a lot more cynical about whether it made sense to create Art in the medium. I know, however, that he really admired what Kirby did. I think in one of those convention panels he said that when he got stuck in his early issues of Fantastic Four or Thor, he just copied the layouts from old Kirby issues.
    Kirby recommendations: Thor/JIM #112. Incredible battle with the Hulk, inked by Chic Stone, drawn twice-up.
    Fantastic Four #57-60 (I think I mentioned this before) Sinnot inks in a powerful continuity from the height of the Cosmic Era of FF.

    I love John Buscema's art. What I almost never liked were the inkers they used to pair with him because they always chose to do a simplistic style. Except Alfredo Alcala, of course (funny thing is Buscema himself didn't like him)

    • @iandorian611
      @iandorian611 ปีที่แล้ว

      Alcala was great but I always felt that he over rendered inking John which I felt the same about Ernie. They were great but I loved the direct simple clean elegant John. I loved Tom finishing over John especially on avengers. Bold clear volumetric and yet it didn’t get over detailed breaking up the bigger shapes John used to push his design sensibilities. Again, I love it all, but, for me, Palmer on Buscema and Buscema on Buscema was tops

    Ditko, Kirby, Buscema, Romita Sr., Colan (Austin), and throw in Mr. Heck; are all in the 1st wave and those guys laid it all down for about 70 percent of my entire old comic appetite as a kid. I held strong opinions on the work of all the inkers as well. I thought Sal's inks on John were weak and weird. Sinnott was best on Buscema (at least the superhero stuff) and Kirby (my opinion). And Tom Palmer was the best on Buscema. Ernie Chan bludgeoned John's breakdowns. I thought Alcala overpowered John's pencils (he hated it) but I thought he "rendered" John's pencils into great illustration. I loved it best next to Palmer's. Third, I liked John's own inks on his pencils (rarely done). I agree Vince Coletta gets overly hammered. He cut corners and Stan loved him 'cause he could make a deadline (he just erased shit and laid it down quick). But he did a lot of good work.

    I appreciate Big John Buscema's art way more now than when I was a kid. I didn't like Conan comics so I thought of Buscema's art as too far removed from mainstream comics like Spider-Man and Batman, etc, so I just avoided it. Now I realize what a pillar he was back in the day. I'll always sit up and pay attention to pieces of original Buscema art...always a pretty penny. Thanks for posting, Rich.

    For a Jack Kirby review, check out Fantastic Four annual #5. (Note: Joe Sinnott is credited as inker, but it was actually Frank Giacoia.) It is a hugely imaginative, detailed and dynamic outing, even for Jack. Speaking of the King, he was not so much blazingly fast as he was doggedly dedicated and single-minded, working very long hours, but not insanely long ones. Thus saith his wife, anyhow, in interviews.

    • @RichardFriendartist
