Is this TOO WINDY for POTA?

  • Okay, I admit it, using a 17 foot whip on a magmount is not the smartest thing when the wind is blowing at 17 meters per second. Is it too windy for POTA, or will I be okay?
What do you think? Is it good enough?
The IC-705 is on loan to me from Christech AS, my favorite Norwegian ham radio store, for the summer. When they called me and asked if I wanted to borrow an IC-705 for the summer to test out and make some videos on I just couldn't resist. So the radio is on loan and sponsored.

Windy? In Newfoundland that would be a slight breeze. Love my 705. VO1OK

I grew up on the Atlantic coast, so it might not be open sea windy, the problem here is more the gusts than the sustained wind. Sustained wind is much easier to handle. And yes, the 705 is a fantastic little radio!

I definitively am. It's a great little rig. I have more videos featuring that rig in line.

Had one mounted on a pac-12 coil, in a gale. The antenna remained undamaged but coil destroyed. I like it.

Most of the time things don’t break, but it’s irritating when things fail nonetheless.

You're welcome, and yes, it is a really nice and large park. It has so many nice spots.

    Nice one Morten….
No experience with Icom in the amateur realm yet but I hear good things about the 705. 😊

It’s an amazing rig. It’s gonna be real hard to send it back.

Hey Morten that would be "10 watts", not 10 whiskeys at your local pub. 😱

I have had the 6100, and while I loved that radio, I have to admit that the 705 is in a completely different league. ATU or not. It is also a way more expensive radio, so it's good to see that the 705 is not only an overpriced 6100. As for people uploading a log, I tend not to stress too much on that. Sometimes it takes me a couple of weeks to upload my own logs, and sometimes I do it the same day. POTA is a way of having fun for me, chasing the awards is way down on the priority list. But everyone is different.
