My FIRST STEPS in REMOTE HAM RADIO
มุมมอง 38014 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
As many of you might know I got a Flexradio 6300 with a Maestro at a great deal earlier this summer. Up to now I have just been playing around with it in the shack, but it's time to get it set up for remote operation. These are my first thoughts on remote ham radio. The LDG Z-11 Pro II was sold to me at a reduced rate in exchange for some videos on it and to see how well it works together with ...

TEHRS POTA Campout 2024

Weather changes fast in Scandinavia, and what looked like a nice weekend to do a campout for the TEHRS crew and fans turned into a summer storm with cold, wet and windy weather. I was not all that satisfied on how the iFTx app worked in my last video on this subject, so I am back with another solution. Great video, Morten. Thinking of your tuner issues, maybe have a look at the Emtech ZM-2. 73, Chris (2E0FRU)
Thanks!
How to full calibration include "Through", "Thruefl", "Isolation" options?
I took the liberty of using Google on your behalf. This is what I found: github.com/NanoVNA-Saver/nanovna-saver
I use an EFHW antenna. No tuning ;-)
Thanks for letting me know.
Awesome video :) thank you 73 44
Thanks!
Great! Thank you!
You’re welcome!
How do you like the iFTx app aside from no inbuilt PTT control? I think this should work fine with something like a Signalink USB. They present themselves as a usb sound card and have in built VOX circuit. With the iPhone 15 and some of the newer iPads switch to usb C, that should simplify the cabling. I have no experience with the Digirig, but I think in theory that should work similarly to the SignaLink. I think is should have a vox circuit also.
The app itself is great, but the limitations put on by Apple makes it cumbersome. I do believe a Signalink would make a lot of difference. I actually think OE4JHW made a video on exactly that.
@@LB0FI I just bought the app today. Not at home to test it fully. It seems to work well on the surface and I had it decoding via web SDR. I will give it a shot with SignaLink hopefully tonight.
@@LB0FI works quite well with the SignaLink. One cable for me from an iPhone 15. USB C to USB B into back of SignaLink. Older iPhones would need the camera adapter which is lightning to usb A. iPhones can recognize generic USB sound cards/codec. I just logged 8 contacts on 40m in short order.
I like that color! Thanks for the links and shoutout.. I did end up taking my 4:1 and integrating a choke on the opposite side. Interesting stuff!
Thanks! The color is the only roll of filament I have left. I bought it for a project that I had planned, but I can’t remember what that project was.
I have been setting up something close to this. I use a 29' speaker wire vertical with four radials and a 9:1 Unun. I need to take some time and build it like you did. That is very nice work. I will also try this antenna. I like building antennas and then doing POTA Activation to try them out. Thanks for the video. 73s
Thanks for the kind words! I am really satisfied with how this turned out.
Old hams like it too
Happy to hear that!
Hvorfor får ikke jeg opp "Export ADIF" på min skjerm?
Det har jeg ingen forutsetninger å mene noe som helst om uten noe mer informasjon.
I have the 'Magitenna'. Ive worked some good dx with it when out portable. The Rybakov is a good antenna, cant see why some dislike it. It does a good job and my Xiegu G90 tunes it with no issues.
The Magitenna is actually pretty good, I just wanted something a bit more compact.
Love your shack, Morten. I use the Rybakov with a telescopic pole on the roof of my garage and run 5W FT8. Still log plenty of QSOs from ZL land. Cheers Jim
My real shack is small and crowded, so making one in AI is just a trick to get some depth in the picture. I haven’t tested a Rybakov at home in a while, but I have a spare piece of coax, so I might do that again.
Solid radio
Oh, absolutely!
What a shack! Dana VE6KBI
Thanks!
good for a relatively new ham that st least has the concept of tuners and such under their belts...
Nice antenna Morten! The best to you from LB1NH 🙂
Thanks!
Very nice. Are you going to test it to see how it performs ?
@@fotografm I am in the process of putting it up and tuning it at my QTH now. There will be an update video when I am done.
But the short answer is that it performs very well even though it isn’t perfectly tuned yet.
How does it compare to the jpc-12 antenna?
@@sepehrsahraian3051 the JPC-12 is relatively easy to use and tune once you learn how to use it. The Buddistick is, in my opinion, probably a more efficient efficient antenna once you get it tuned. It is just way too complicated to tune. I am no fan of the Buddistick as you probably saw.
@@LB0FI I can imagine that raised counterpoise being too finicky.
@@sepehrsahraian3051 The coil is also a bit of a challenge.
You already know I'm a fan of the Rybakov, LOL.
I do!
Thanks for Rybakov review. Glad to hear it works well.
Thanks! A Rybakov is a great antenna. There is another Rybakov video coming on Sunday, where I take a look at a way more compact Rybakov design, so you can look forward to that.
For all remote operations, you can use a WiFi smart socket and maybe a switchbot if you can't use software to turn the radio on/off
Oh absolutely. I am going to add a Philips Hus WiFi smart socket for the PSU and a relay to trigger the radio on and off.
Just measure it as you change bands, that will get you close
A very good tip, thank you!
With your remote power on / off using a relay, you might want to have that logic also dusconnect the antenna in case you are away from home and you hear there is a storm coming through. 73 Ed
Thanks for your input again Ed! As for the antennas, I have the rest of my family very well drilled on disconnecting coax, and that way I make sure that the coax is far away from the radios in a lightning situation.
Love this! What model Baofeng did you use?
The UV5R I think. It doesn't really matter.
that air conditioner is too small! 😂
Hey man! I need place for my radios!
Shelly switch works for me, app on my Android phone. Cheap, and so far reliable.
I have no idea what a shelly switch is, but I’ll look into it. Thanks!
Morten, I have the remote switch Flex sells and it works great. I would recommend it. Simple and effective. 73, K0OTC
So I'd say build something yourself, but off a good base of existing software...because it's more fun than buying pre-made solution 😄 Something like a ESP32 or ESP8326 set up with ESPHome would be great, as easy to configure (not writing any software yourself), has WiFi, can buy off the shelf relay boards, can configure simple web interface, and can even add other sensors to it for the shack e.g. temperature sensor(s), which could then cut power in case of overheating equipment. Maybe more than effort than you want, but guess it depends if you want another project to get into. I've got a bunch around my house, and even modified equipment with small ESP modules to make non-smart devices smart. My heating and hot water system all runs off them, hooked up to Home Assistant.
I just checked some prices, and an Aqara T1 ZigBee smart relay is only about 250 NOK (€25), so I might go with that. That would also work fine with my Homey smart home controller.
You're flexing your new radio? classy 😁🪓
Indeed!
Not new at all. Bobtail cousin
I never claimed it was a new design, I even say 15 seconds into the video that it isn't new. It's also not a Bobtail Curtain, it's a Half Square.
@@LB0FI well if you examine the bobtail you will see it is two end fed half squares.
By that logic a dipole and a random wire is the same antenna.
Kenwood…. My first radio was a TS430s … I now have a TS520. Kenwood make great rigs.
It allows you to ham anywhere FEPLABSRADIO uses Alexa and a smart switch to turn his flex on and off
Once again, I appreciate the music you generated. Perhaps you could do a video on how to use the website to generate somgs about ham radio?
I could perhaps do a members only video about it at some point. Unfortunately the TH-cam algorithm punishes me pretty hard from straying away from topic. I will need to see how I could do it in a good way. Thanks for the idea though John, I will let it brew in the back of head for a couple of days.
It'll be hard to let go of that 705!
Absolutely! It's a great little rig.
Congrats on your first SOTA!
It's not my first SOTA, just my first SOTA in two years. I got too hooked on POTA last year to bother doing any SOTA :)
@@elprimodeperico6450 Sorry, I don’t speak a word of Spanish.
@@LB0FI ok no problem. Sorry for your bad experience. I think good antena. My english if bery bad 🤦🏻👌🤣
Hi Morten, perhaps the expression "side operator" isn't known? I have never heard it before. I would normally say "second operator". Even then trying to get a chaser to stay after he has got his contact can be difficult. I guess the at705 would not work with the IC7100? Being an ICOM tuner I think it might have if you had the correct cable. 73 Ed
Agreed that second operator might be better.
Second operator might be better if there are only two operators. I know English is not my first language, but there's something about "two second operators" that does not sing well in my linguistic ear. As with the AT-705 it would probably work fine with the IC-7100, but we would be limited to ten watts, and then we could have just kept going with the 705.
@@LB0FI agreed I had thought the ATU 705 would be at least rated to 50w but I suppose ICOM only want it used with the IC705. Another related question to readability at QRP, does the 705 have a built-in speech processor? That can help a lot in marginal conditions. 73 Ed.
@@DD5LP The 705 has the same very good compressor as the 7300 and 7610 has, so that helps a lot!
I have activated several times now QRP, but I always use a resonant antenna. My X6100 has a tuner but I never use it. Maybe cause I activate near the ocean most of the time here.lol conditions haven’t been great , hope to catch you on the air soon. VE1SK
@@stevea3498 Oh, I have done plenty of QRP activations, it was just that this wasn’t the day for it.
I got 100Km QSO in VHF on my activation there. Tryvannshøgda, portables on both sides. Nice activity! I got also Joakim on a P2P yesterday...;)
I am curious if you called each other on UHF/VHF. Assuming that Retevis is a dual banner, you could activate enough on that just between yourselves. Thanks for another great video, Morton!
@@russbrown194 you can’t do a S2S from the same summit in SOTA unfortunately.
With a team of five, four can exit the activation zone and call the one at the summit and these counts as contacts(but not s2s). You'd have to cycle round to get everyone their needed 4 contacts. Whether that is "in the spirit of SOTA" is questionable, but it is valid. Ed
@@LB0FI thanks Morton, I didn't realize that. Only have done one SOTA activation and that was a sidelight to a POTA activation. Appreciate the education!
Looks like you had a great time! I think in UK it depends on where you are to have success on VHF/UHF. I've not had much luck calling CQ on 2m from SOTA summits near me. 73
I had to try though, especially after seeing how well Radio Rover does in Scotland with 2m. And yes, it was a great day out!
Nice POTA/SOTA for a break from TEHRS! 73 Mort!
Thanks! And we’re only two weeks away from the next season of TEHRS!
Buy a longer 5.6m telescopic whip. Use it with the coil for 40m and remove the coil for any band over 30m changing the length of the whip to tune. If it’s ground mounted the provided radials are fine, if you raise the feedpoint with the mast sections the radials will have to be the right length for the band of operation. I see many videos with coils upside down, coil in different locations up the mast, raised feedpoint with no tuned radials - it’s all pretty simple really. PS if you don’t get the larger whip you can do as in the video use the mast sections to make the original whip to length. Or if not using the sections the coil will stay on as you move up the bands until 10m or so.
Yes, that would probably be more efficient. A quarter wave vertical is always more vertical than a loaded antenna, but that is not what this video is about.
my installation keeps choosing my resolution for me ... why???
I honestly don’t know if you don’t provide any more context.
Hi. Thanks for this upload, I may be watching it again once I purchase a programming cable for this radio . One question I have at the moment is when you download the software for the cps, do you have to download the driver too (which I believe is at a different link) or is the driver included in the cps download?
I honestly don’t remember, and I don’t have this radio anymore. Just go ahead and try.
i get a weird error "The semaphore timeout period has expired"
I honestly have no idea. I also does not have this radio anymore.
@@LB0FI reception is very bad. My tid h3 blows it out of the water. Same with my baofeng and quanshang
@thomasthewatchman Okay. Are you sure about the Quansheng though? It’s a fun radio, but it has the worst receiver of any HT I have had.
@@LB0FI well in my situation here in Phoenix the repeaters are all about 5-10 miles away. I’m having issues with this radio hitting any of them. Then i simply turn on my other raidos, Tid, wiuxun and Quansheng, and im hitting the repeaters loud and clear, while the HA1G is has a lot of static and then very quiet. I emailed Retavis, maybe I have a lemon.
@@LB0FI I really wanna like this radio though. It feels amazing in the hand and the weight is amazing! I hope retavis sends me a replacement and this one is just a bad sample
I love how used the website to generate the ham radio song! I wonder if you could make a sony with both English and Norge? DE WA1KLI
I could probably make a song that has both, but my Norwegian viewershop is so small that it just wouldn't matter.
Hi Morten, I am surprised that you find the AliExpress whip too short for 20m. I have two and I have to shorten them by one section to make them resonant on 20m. I am not using them on a car roof however, rather on a ground peg with 8 3 metre radial wires. 73 Ed.
I think it depends a lot on what whip you get. I borrowed one from LB5JJ that was almost perfect, but this one is not long enough. I have also tested it on a ground spike with similar results unfortunately.
Thanks for the P2P!
Thanks for hunting!
