Joel Embiid did that and got hurt later, he chose the games in which he could score more, so the media started to root harder for him. He wasn't going to make the minimum games played last year before the injury, with something like 60% of the games left, he only had like 4 games to miss.

“The Air up there” has some of the best dunks I’ve ever seen. Ever. The 720… sheesh.
To this day, I wish the NBA would’ve let Skip to my Lou, go off. Lol. But you stated it and showed it, and I remember how the league made Skip always be Rafer Alston… there were announcers who in game would say how the NBA wanted to keep the “playground” influence out of the game.
    Sidenote, but relevant…
I’ve been watching the game since 75-76… and I was a young boy, excited to see two players I’d heard about…. Pistol L
    Pete and Dr. J….
The reason? Because those guys resonated in the “hood”… interesting enough, the NBA wasn’t keen on showcasing Pistol, although he was white, and I can recall announcers openly criticizing his “play ground” game.
Also understand, that dunking was rare, especially in game. Usually it was just basic dunks, although I can remember Connie Hawkins, even late in his career doing some “great for the time” things while dunking, it was Dr. J, who by word of mouth~ unless you lived in NY and saw him at the Rucker…. or tapped in enough to catch him in the ABA… and for context, TV reception was TERRIBLE… lol..
But Dr. J was an urban legend even before he became the first “face of the league “ I can remember… Kareem was winning MVP’s and it was some very good players. But Dr. J had all the endorsements… His game was marketed by the league… to my memory, he was the first guy who was so well known outside of basketball… and also for context in the 70’s Basketball was undercover known as “the Black man’s game” and fans weren’t filling arenas and basketball was probably fourth on the totem pole of athletic popularity in the 70’s behind football, Baseball, and boxing, honestly College basketball may have been more popular. It was definitely broadcast more.
In the early 80’s… other kids were impressed that I’d know all the starting five for the whole NBA and even what college they went too, now this is before EA Live, or 2K, well before any basketball video game.
With the exception of Dr J vs Larry Bird on the Commodore 64. Damn I’m old.
But yeah… it was because college basketball was shown far more than the NBA, and I was fortunate to live in ACC country with a local team, which all the games were broadcast locally even back then.
    My point to this story,
Dr J… game was never the same once he got to the NBA, my pops used to say the NBA was holding him back, and it was a shame because fans never got to see the real Dr J…
I was too young to understand that context. But looking back… now I can see he was right.
and the fans apparently didn’t want that type of game in the NBA…
Pistol Pete. Had an influence in the game that most don’t understand…
he transcend race and his teaching skills tutorial was highly influential, and his creativity influenced how young generation viewed ball handling, and Isiah came later. But it was Pete initially that gave that spark… before Pete, guards didn’t play with flair, like Pete.. they just didn’t. Tiny Archibald was nice nice. But not flashy. World B Free could JUMP JUMP but he was basic..
    David Thompson,
was D Wade ish… but with a high vertical. Now his dunks were power…
Dr Dunkenstein. Darrell Griffith played in Utah, injuries and Jerry Sloan toned his game down.
SMH. He had that flair as well.
My point. Coaches and fans viewed that type of play as “Ninja Ball, Globetrotter, showboat, and wanted none of that…
TBH outside of his passing Magic didn’t play flashy, offensively his game was boring and ugly, unless he was in transition… funny looking jump shot 😂😂😂
We all know about what happened with Iverson and Alston…
The NBA didn’t want that type of play in the games.
Up until the recent rule changes … freedom of movement and the zero step gather step… I was fine with the ball handling rules. Allowing the players to do a little extra, (Jamaal Crawford) but not to excessive (everyone in this era)
and Pistol was the first that did it and kept going… even when the league hated it and didn’t support it…
Now it’s the game… it’s gone to far in the other direction… it’s more playground pickup, skill wise when it comes to ball handling…
    It’s not “real” basketball…
    rather it’s incomplete basketball…

It's not only in today's Mary Kay Massengill DNA NBA. Have you been to your local rec renter or park lately? These Monistat cats are all about the stack. They prefer it extremely easy. They're petrified of a little adversity. It looks like Harlem Globetrotters vs Washington Generals. Only thing missing is confetti buckets. It was total opposite when I was growing up. I was one of the best street-ballers in my city and befriended another of the city's best street-ballers - and we never wanted to play on same team. Not only cause it be unfair if playing against inferior competition but we always wanted to beat each other.
I'm 55 yrs old now and have two herniated discs and Greg Oden knees but I still go out there and ball when my body feels decent. I've been dubbed Baby Shaq for the last decade or so cause I stay in the paint and dominate. Today's Vagisil heads complain that I play too physical in the post and claim that's why they can't stop me with my back to the bucket. But the real reason they can't check me is cause my footwork is impeccable, I have a McHale-like jump-hook and I can finish with either hand on either side of the backboard. And some idiots claim us 80s/90s cats didn't have skills!

What is so crazy to me about the NBA players who don't want to be in the dunk contest, is that they love to showboat their Dunks in the games/ But don't want to showcase how good of a dunker they really are in the real dunk competition.
How to get them to want to be in it: The NBA can ask for the top 5 greatest dunker to be the Judges, Like Dr. jay, MJ, Dominique, Vince, Spud, because players like to showboat in front of the best, since it's only annually contest, have a larger fancier Trophy add with a crystal glass crown on top basketball hoop with gold engrave with a Diamond looking crystal stone on the bottom of the shining wood and hype it up by using famous people like, Kevin hart and Travis Kelce, and a few others. And ask Mj to Hand it out the Trophy.

As a long time lakers fan since the early 90s. Kobe never forced shaq to leave. He didn't mind shaq leaving, but shaq demanded the trade because phil was fired. Also, kobe was never a sidekick to shaq. During the western conference playoffs, kobe normally led the Lakers in ppg. While shaq wasn't necessarily killing the west bigs, but holding his own, kobe was killing his matchups with dominant wing defenders. Kobe also was always the closer. Especially late game fts. Yall, who didn't watch, please stop saying saq carried or kobe was the sidekick. Also, no one was saying back then that kobe was being carried. We all were already doing the Kobe vs. Mj comparisons because all we had to do was watch kobe play to see how good he was. Shaq didn't win before Kobe. Kobes rookie year had fans cheering and begging for him to play. We knew kobe was the next great during his rookie year. Even his 2nd year, while not starting, was voted as an all-star starter. Because we SAW him play, so we already KNEW. Most of us real, not casuals knew, that if kobe like iverson and vince had his own team, he'd avg well over 30 ppg. He also avg 30 along with shaq 1 or 2 seasons. People just dont understand how crazy and good u had to be to do that with a Shaq get his 20 shots in the 90s. I could care less kobe had Shaq. That doesn't put him below any other player. Its like saying that mj had Shaq. we'll put kobe ahead because kobe won with pippen. If we're honest about skill, kobe was more skilled than mj offensively, mj might have been slightly better defensively. However, kobe played against better and more athletic defenders in the toughest scoring era. Lebron isn't a 2-way player, and in 2016, without his roids during the 1st 20 games declined.

Really, there is only one way to settle the "who's better debate between Kobe and LeBron. Research every time they went one on one in every single game that they have played and tally up those individual stats for each player. You really cant go by who has more points, who has more rings etc. Because those are in game, team accomplishments with most of those points gained by being guarded by different players at different times. Back in the day, when my friends and i wanted to see who the best player was....we went to the court and played one on one. With Kobe and LeBron, most people are judging who is better when they playing the team game, so yall confusing who the better team player is with who was just better by themselves. I dont have the time to research everytime Kobe and LeBron went one on one and which player got the best of the other player more. To me, thats how this Kobe vs LeBron debate is settled and i am patiently waiting for somebody to do that research. And BTW....they were both in their prime so theres no excuses no matter who comes out on top in this ongoing debate.

These clowns today like to play like the untouchable and better than back in the day and very few impress me as ppl who could size up with players back in the day when they actually played defense, challenging every shot and layup or dunk. To me the blocks were better than certain dunks…watching a ball get thrown into the 10th row or defending a team till the shot clock run out on multiple plays. It's as simple as making them do the dunk competition. If they look like crap doing it, that's on them! I think Dominique is making a mistake here of taking his mentality as the default mentality of this era players, and that's not the case as we discuss in a previous episode. LeBron James to take an example, he has taken all kind of punishments in the regular season, the playoffs and the finals and he's jumping around left and right calling himself the GOAT like if nothing have happened, I can't see how losing a dunk contest is gonna make any difference. He's just lazy, there's no added bonus (sic) or damn money (sic). Players these days have no shame, I couldn't believe Edwards was talking all that smack in the Olympics right after being humbled in the FIBA world cup. They don't care about the losing, if they don't participate my believe is that it's out of sheer laziness.

The thing is, my college didn't had anything near a decent basketball team, he infact signed in for the contest as a "popular contender" and he was around my age, like 18/19 yo and my hight 6'2/6'3 at most. Sure, he jumped out of the gym but I was puzzle, like, how on earth is this guy defeating the pros? Sadly, that was all his career as a basketball player, he never played in a professional league. Second that year in the Slam Dunk contest was an American college player named Antonio Granger, from Detroit and played in Boston College, 6'7 215... but couldn't defeat the street guy 🤣 at least Granger made a career after that he went to Turkey and Russia and won Leagues there.

Missing 25 games a season comparable to Lebron in LA. Matter fact Lebron played more games last season in year 22 than d Wade played his last 3 seasons in Miami. That’s why you’ll have to go down the roster you can’t just look at 3 players and act like the Heat didn’t have Mario Chalmers and Norris Cole in the backcourt lol. With what??? Birdman Anderson? Joel Anthony, Eric dampier, the best wing they got was Shane battier who they added in 2011. Washed Mike miller out there? No all defensive players but Lebron???
