What's the definition of a turtleneck?
Basically, it's a sweater with a high rolled collar that is turned down and that covers some parts or most parts of your neck. A traditional polo neck or turtleneck is always folded over and it's very slim fitting in the body. Typically, the turtleneck part itself is made out of a ribbed knit while the body is generally made up of a solid knit. You need the ribs in the neck because you have to pull it over your head yet it should sit firmly against your neck.
How should a turtleneck sweater fit?
Basically, there are two schools of thought. The one is the turtleneck is a rather slim fitting garment that is snug and reaches below your waist. Most turtlenecks are quite long so you can tuck them in without them coming out. In the 80s, sweater turtlenecks were very floppy but personally, I think it's not a good style because you have it sit very close against your neck so it's floppy in the body, it just looks weird. That being said, turtlenecks usually come in different weight classes, there are some that are extremely thin and they maybe work in an office environment and it's a true substitute for a shirt. On the other hand, you have thicker sweaters typically made out of wool which are meant to keep you a lot warmer and you might be able to wear them with an undershirt.
How should you style a turtleneck sweater with your outfits?
Personally, I like to wear them directly against my skin or with a thin undershirt. I never wear a polo shirt underneath with any kind of collar and I also try to avoid any kind of dress shirt with a collar because it just looks weird and you can see it outlined from the outside. Sometimes, even an undershirt is too much and I just suggest you take a look at it in the mirror before you go out on the street because if you have an outline of a v-neck t-shirt underneath a turtleneck, it just looks odd.
Turtlenecks are a great way to dress down suits.
A turtleneck makes everything look a lot softer yet you're still well-dressed.
To go even a step further, I've seen people wearing it with a tuxedo or dinner jackets and I find that look is rather odd because black tie lives of its formality but it looks much better like that, in my opinion.
You can also use a turtleneck to dress down a double-breasted jacket and to learn more about that please check out this video here.
At recent Pitti Uomos, I've also seen men wear a turtleneck sweater that's rather thin with a larger denim shirt on top which is topped off by an overcoat or a jacket. Obviously, that's a more flamboyant fashion-forward look and are only recommended to people who really know what they're doing. Personally, it's not a look that I like.
Off-white is a really nice color for turtleneck sweaters especially in the winter because it contrasts with the darker colors that are otherwise usually incorporated in your outfit.
One of the biggest challenges for turtlenecks is to combine them in a way with your other garments so it looks very well put together. I found, in terms of color, if you follow the concept of contrast and harmony, you always look well-dressed.
    How should you buy turtlenecks?
Ideally, you get something that is machine washable because sometimes, you'll sweat more if you go from a cold environment into a warm department store than you would with a different sweater. Because of that, you want to be able to clean it regularly and dry cleaners are very costly so ideally, you want to be able to wash it at home in your washing machine. That means you get something in cotton. Cotton is not very insulating so merino wool is probably the best material for a sweater because it is not as delicate as cashmere yet you can wash it on a gentle cycle in your machine at home.

Dear Sven, great information as always! I couldn’t bring myself to ditch my meagre collection of turtlenecks from the 1970’s. Now thanks to you I am back in the groove and have even ordered a new “blue fleck” merino wool example to pair under a close fitting cream three quarter length rain mac for the milder English winter days. Nearly 70 years old and fashionable. Who would have thought it? You are the main man alright! All the best, Al.

I always like this channel, but I disagree with most things in this video, as someone who loves turtleneck sweater:
    1. you can wear a long sleeve T-shirt under the turtleneck, darker or thicker material will not see through.
    2. wearing sweater directly on your skin is a beginner mistake.
3.. dark turtleneck is fine, you can wear it under medium value jacket or a dark overcoat if you wish. Wearing mono-tone dark cloth in the winter can be stylish.

Hello Sven, thank you for the amazing video guide again!
I've noticed that the best option of undershirt for turtleneck is some technical snug fitting short sleeve sport shirt even with a little compression features or viscose (or bamboo) undershirt. As slim fit as turtlenecks are nowadays I've noticed that there isn't that much friction between the turtleneck and undershirt vs wearing just a basic cotton or cotton mix undershirt.

I personally recommend woolovers, they are affordable, come in some nice, natural looking colours and different materials like cashmere and wool. Another thing you can do is to fold the neck twice instead of just once. It makes the neck a little more volumptious and shorter. A good way to not overheat when entering a store or building.

I love turtleneck sweaters because of their elegance. Wearing the most fitting turtleneck sweater can be far more elegant than wearing a shirt and tie, at least on some occasions. However, my biggest problem with turtleneck manufacturers is that they make a product that sags badly after a few wear.
I started wearing turtleneck sweaters in the '60s when they were also in high fashion, and I think the quality was much better then.
I bought several turtlenecks from LL Bean, and the cotton was exceptional, but after just a few wear, the neck sagged so badly that I could only wear them to jog in the winter!

I can't agreed on the "avoid navy". I think a navy roll neck with heavy knit (submariner style) is great for a casual or smart casual outfit (without jacket). Simon Crompton of Permanent Style have some awesome exemples.
But under a jacket I agreed that a fin wool grey or camel is more easy to pair.

I agree with most of what you say and I think a video on this topic was needed, but when it comes to a turtle neck and pinstripe I don’t think it’s completely unacceptable, although anything black tie or more formal is obviously not a good option.

What's your opinion on a black suit with very dark grey/black turtleneck? Is it too much black and should I then combine it with a navy blue suit?
Because I saw a picture of Eddie Redmayne pulling a all black combination off and it looked really good, he went also for black Chelsea boots this made it look really fascinating

the dress shirt under a chunky turtleneck is a great look, especially with the collar flipped up so the collar points stick out a bit

I really like all the turtlenecks in this video--the weight, fit, and color. Where can I find pieces like these? Can anyone recommend a brand that makes heavier turtlenecks than uniqlo?

I actually got a tan turtle neck from H&M not too long ago and I pair it with my dark navy blazer and dark wash denim and chukka boots and I like the dark with lighter color contrast in the outfit

I remember "mock necks", i. e. those with a short collar, as we used to wear them in the army in winter, underneath the field shirt. But I never considered them a proper sweater as such, just as a kind of additional undergarment. As for the real turtlenecks with the high collar: the sentence "they really show every imperfection of your body" is true. So stay away from them if you've got a paunch.

In my -teens I used to wear it to school in the autumn and winter with a black silk shirt with tiny standing collar (like chinese style almost). It looked quite nice and warm :D.

I have long hair and wear turtlenecks. I always have my hair tied back or up when I wear one. But its still long. I think so long as your hair isn't just left down, its fine.
