I already posted 1 comment & I love this tune so much, I had to listen to it a 2nd time. I've been playing guitar since 1974, then eventually gigged professionally all over east/central Florida for many years. I've played electric guitar in several R&R bands, 2 of which I co-founded, was the front man/lead singer playing guitar at the same time plus blues harp. Got sick of the rock/club scene, so I went back to my roots of performing with acoustic guitar, having co-founded a trio and then a killer duo with the best un-signed guitarist in the entire state. We performed together for 9 years. During that same time, I was also performing as a solo act. Having so much music "under my belt"..........this song: Foxglove as performed here by JP, plus the amazing story as to how he learned this tune, has me more inspired than I've been in the last 15 yrs. THANK YOU & GOD BLESS YOU JP!!! ( Now I get to learn this song straight from you on this here video, lol. And I will do just that!!! )

Oh man, I LOVED that. This tune is nothing short of majestic, and you played it extremely well JP!!! You're right about how many acoustic guitars can't handle open C tuning very well. The string tension is so low, that the neck on such guitars relaxes too much & gets that dreaded fret buzz, or at the very least, the strings suddenly feel like "floppy noodles". It takes an incredibly stable neck to handle open C tuning, plus the body has to be resonant enough to project the lower frequencies of such a low open tuning. Lastly: At the time of posting this comment, there are currently 10 miserable souls with warped minds who actually gave this video/tune a "thumbs down". ............what the hell is wrong with some people. I truly feel sorry for such tortured souls.

You are correct, and I've noticed that in open C (and especially the unison E tuning of CSNY's 'Suite Judy Blue Eyes' - 5 E's but the B string stays on B...or Zeppelin's 'Rain Song') some strings gradually creep real sharp while another goes flat. I couldn't imagine playing an unusual tuning in front of a crowd with my 'cheap' guitars for fear of making their ears bleed, or having to just stop a couple of seconds to fix the intonation so my ears don't bleed! Not perceived as professional - even by novices & the musical illiterate(!)

@@boboala1 I just so happen to perform the Rain Song ( I play & sing at the same time......the original studio version ) all the time & have been for decades. I guess because the acoustic guitars that I've owned & currently own now, are of such quality, I haven't had any issues with any strings going sharp. I currently own 4 Hsienmo acoustics, all from their custom shop. ( pronounced: "She-en-mo"......named after company founder Li Chen's oldest daughter ) All 4 are fabulous, and one is a D45 clone ( other than the bolt-on neck, it's identical to a pre-war Martin inside & out, with Adirondack forward shifted bracing & top, with Honduran rosewood back & sides ), that I almost always keep in the DGCGCD tuning for performing the Rain Song. It never buzzes or goes out of tune during a performance. Of course I have to tweak a couple strings after it has sat for several days un-played. Not always......but sometimes. Hsienmo is perhaps the finest acoustic's made in all of China. They build no more than 400 acoustics PER YEAR. That's not very many. They CNC many of the components, but they are built entirely by hand. ( Many boutique builders are now using CNC machines due to consistency in quality. ) I bought the 1st one last November, loved it so much, I bought 3 more ( various models ) over the next 8 months. All solid woods......NO laminated sides. Hsienmo doesn't even offer "a cheap budget guitar". Prices start at $900, and go up from there, depending on tone woods & appointments. Prices are incredible. Example: my D45 clone has the ultra-fancy abalone on the peghead, that only came on the finest pre-war D45's........and priced at only $2500 including hard case. It even has the nitrocellulose lacquer finish. All 4 of my Hsienmo's came perfectly set-up & intonated right out of the case. Every Hsienmo comes with camel bone nut, saddle, and bridge pins. Interior construction is neat as a pin. When it comes to bang for the buck, I believe they are the best value on the planet ........for now anyway. I have yet to find a single bad review on any of their acoustic guitars, and most will stand up against similar models from other makers costing 3 to 5 times more. Their only American distributor is located in south Florida, and comes with a slight dealer mark-up. They do ship anywhere.....but why not buy factory-direct the way I did. These cats make some seriously good guitars. You would have to spend the money on a Boucher or Collings for example, to beat them. Check em out if you're interested. I like mine even better than the 3 high-end Japanese Takamine's I once owned years ago. Their website is Hsienmoguitars.com

@@howabouthetruth2157 Well, you inspired me to 'woodshed' for a solid hour last week and refamiliarize myself with The Rain Song...hadn't played it in a few years. (Took me a minute or so to remember the tuning...) I especially love the chord progression of the last section - ascending up the neck to the 12th fret with a short fall into the hauntingly/mysterious beautiful ending chords. It's a masterpiece and for you to be able to play AND sing it, solo, well, my hat's off to you! It's a long tune with a fair amount of lyrics and nuance to deliver to your audiences!!)
      Cheers!

Merci! This song is one of lots good ones from Bruce Cockburn! You are the right player to play that kind of finger picking style and you are doing it perfectly with this nice Alvarez Yairi. Thank you! I did bought my Alvarez Yairi in 1997, the friends around me was having , Guild, Larrivée, Martin, when I tried many guitar at the guitar shop it ends with 2 instrument witch was a Gibson at 2100.00$ aned the Yairi at 1300.00$ I finally made my final choice on the Yairi, This marvellous instrument still continue to be impressive for me and my friends.

You hit on some great points with guitars. Play what feels and sounds great to you
A local luthier here in the UK hit on a great point, a guitar doesn't have to be well made to sound good! If you look back in history that's very clear because a lot of the original.holy grail guitars are really not that we'll put together especially if you compare them to my modern boutique guitars. Its also worth noting that some less than perfect guitars really fill a sonic niche, those cheap recording kings really work for the blues, better than a lot of very expensive boutique stuff I have tried
