  • Classic Mini Mk1 Conversion
The Classic car restoration series continues with our classic Mini Mk1 Conversion. In this episode we take a quick look at all the Mk1 conversion fabrication work that we have done so far to convert this 1989 classic Mini Racing Flame into a 1960 Mk1 Cooper. We take care of all the panel gaps on the car around the newly restored Mk1 doors, adding material and remove where needed, they now fit like a glove. We also get the door rubbers, handle, latch, catch, windows etc on for a trial fit and try opening and shutting the doors for the first time. All in this video.
So let’s crack on, I hope you enjoy the episode
    Huge thank you for watching.

I think that’s the only mini in existence with gaps of that quality. Certainly far better than factory

My parents bought me a D reg 850 mini Mk1 for £160 in 1973, which was sold for spares or repairs circa 76 as the floor had fallen out. I was a student so I had no cash to repair her and there were no mig welders in those days. Oh how I wish I could have had somewhere to keep her until I was in funds. Anyway, FYI, if my mini doors had fitted as well as yours I would have been really chuffed. 😂 Your dad will know all about panel gaps on 1960’s and 1970’s British cars. Best regards, David

It’s just like you’ve never been gone! I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Mini with door gaps that good before, even Jaguar and Rover had to fence off their gaps to stop people falling in.

Absolutely love this channel, I wish we could have a video every week, it is that interesting, I know it's not possible though. I had a 1972 Austin Mini in 1981 for a few years, I had three engines in it in three year, first was the original 1000cc, then a 1100 from an Austin 1100, then I built a 850cc grass track engine with a 998 cooper head on it, milled down by 40 thou, if I remember correctly it had a compression ratio of around 10 or 11 to one, it had a full race cam, it would hardly go below 3,500rpm then went like a scalded cat, 95 to 100mph top speed. Amazing times. Keep up the fantastic work guys.

I was finishing some shopping yesterday and on the way out of the shop a yellow Mk2 Mini drove by. Roof & bonnet painted black and the rest was a Candy yellow colour. White wedding ribbons
decorated the front of the car. My thoughts immediately shifted to your build and here you are. Your dad looks great but noticed that he has slowed down a little. I am not sure of your action plans
around Covid but do your best to protect yourself and your family. I am vey excited about your build as its progressing great work with your emphasis on a quality finish.

I had to add 9mm to the rear lower edge of the boot lid, 10mm in some places on the doors & 5mm to the rear edge of the bonnet on my HC Viva! Panel gaps were all over the place! The l/h quarter door shut above the swage line was badly pressed & had to slice that!! Never mind though... it's all nice & shiny now with the new paint I applied in the shed! Cheers. Leigh. PS: that's Rolls Royce panel gapping right there!!!
