    Here it is, the new project Mini. Found on E-bay but I lost the auction only to later find the higher bidder messed the seller around so it was offered to the next highest bidder...... Me. The Mini is a 1997 Rover Cooper MPI and has been off the road in a garage since 2007! It's what some might call a barn find.
    In this update I show you start to finish how I replace a complete Heritage door skin

    Keith, I’ve been watching your videos since the vini series and you have, along with people in the lights of Tom at TCR and Alex toon, inspired me to tackle a project of my own. I’ve been saving for ages and have amassed almost £1600 and I have found a mini that I intend to purchase
    tomorrow. Project sprout is of similar condition and it has gone in similar places and I figured if you can do it and make sprout glorious as can I. So in truth I’d just like to thank you for the content that you post and thanks for sharing what you do with the internet.

  • @1chish

    Damn you made that look far too easy and ended up with a brilliant result. But you did good checking with other 'Tubers' first. There are some really helpful people about. Now don't get me started on the 'Doorskin' double entendres.....
    I have to own up I bottled doing the two doorskins on Noah. I was OK fitting the Magnum bottom repair panels but just knew I would not make a good job of the outer panels. Luckily I found a body chap at the local Volvo car dealer who has done them for me for £60. This guy likes old school stuff and the owner is a classic car buff (Minor Woodie, a White P1800S, Volvo P1800ES, RR Silver Shadow and a Bentley T) So a bit of a result.
    They are also going to paint it when its all done. Again a bit of a result out here in the middle of nowhere.

  • @johndavey72
    @johndavey72 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Fair crack . You 've done very well . I've seen "skilled " panelbeater's make a sow's ear of skinning doors. Couple of tips . Before you take the skin off where the top of the skin meets the window frame at the front , get a hacksaw and lightly make a "cut " at the joint . This will serve as a datum point for the new skin to align. Regarding the rear , l always line up the
    handle screw holes on the skin and frame and use a nut and bolt to hold them . To be honest l never put the frame on the car and then the skin to the frame. And l never put the fittings in . The doors are so light they really don't drop at all . Modern day doors ARE incredibly heavy , some require 2 people to remove and lift ! When you pulled off the regulator, which is a pain , wind the body to the bottom of the door . This "narrows" the span of the regulator and thus slides off the runners much easier. Finally , l 've never used a folder , but then again l've had 50 years to get it right ! Fold the corners first , this holds the skin in place. Hope this helps. Genuinely you did a terrific job. So that will teach me to shut up !Take care and stay safe. Is it Java Green ? Oh ! Don't forget the sound deadening pad .

    • @classicminiworkshop
      @classicminiworkshop  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks John, great tips. I put the sound deadening pad on later but with hindsight it's easier to fit before the skin goes on. The colour is Almond Green

    • @johndavey72
      @johndavey72 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@classicminiworkshop oh, the original Almond Green . My father had the very first privately registered Morris Mini Cooper in 1961 and yes ! It was Old English White over Almond Green . Oh ! By the way . Make sure you spot weld the skin adjacent to the hinges . If opened with force i.e. gust of wind the frame , if no welds, can distort and the skin will pop off the frame . I've seen it happen . Cheers !

    Great video and learned a few tips for replacing my mgb skins, thanks. Replacing the skin is definitely the way to go, second hand doors are usually as bad if not worse too and as you say brand new are exceptionally highly priced.
    Are you going to waxoyl the inside of the door? I’d be tempted to try and run a bead of tigerseal along the joint from the inside of the door shell if it’s possible and wax over that.
    Thanks again great video

    • @classicminiworkshop
      @classicminiworkshop  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks. I sealed the lip before folding so it's sealed from the inside. Once it's painted I will add sound deadening and wax the inside.

    You should have painted the inside of that door skin with a good coat of paint and not just rely on the e-coat, also should have put a piece of sound deadening on the skin prior to fitting.

    You could have just repaired the bottom section, repair sections are available, you wouldn't have had to take all the gear out then.

    • @classicminiworkshop
      @classicminiworkshop  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I could have done but then trying to do it without warping the panel too much and getting it looking right again would be very difficult. The paint finish will be to a high standard so any imperfections in a flat panel will stick out like a sore thumb

    • @stevefuller1779
      @stevefuller1779 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@classicminiworkshop , I recently did a MK1 skin repair, they don't make repair sections for external hinge doors so I made a wooden buck and made my own repair section! I joddled the edge of my repair panel and welded it in, no distortion. It might have been a different story if I had tried to butt weld it, and , yes, there was a bit of work blending it in but it has come out good, yours does look good though. All the best.
