    The Khaki colour indicates use in Egypt and Sinai, with eventual use in Palestine... Whilst the Hedjaz railway ( Damascus- Medina) was Metre gauge ( under Ottomans ) the lines in Egypt were Standard Gauge. As Occupation of Palestine occurred ( late 1917-1918), the ROD would have expanded services to Gaza etc. In WWII, ROD 8F locos were used in Egypt and Mandate Palestine, with one preserved in Israel.

      No this loco is painted in incorrectly. It was sent to France and only black and grey locos were used in France by the ROD.

    As to the Khaki livery, when I joined the USAF in 1970 khaki was still a viable non-fatigue uniform, though blue would replace khaki as a dress uniform within not too many years. This loco's shade of khaki, while not a perfect match, is quite similar to what I wore back then. It is certainly far closer to "my" khaki than the much darker model you compare it to, which doesn't look khaki at all to me.

    • @thhseeking
      @thhseeking 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      "khaki" is from an Urdu word often translated as "dust", so it depends on what colour your dust is :P But people calling an olive-green "khaki" does make me wonder what toxic chemicals are in their "dust" :P

  • @brianartillery
    @brianartillery 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +21

    The word 'Khaki' is a word of Urdu origin, which means 'Soil coloured', or occasionally 'Dust'.
    Khaki colour ranges from yellowish, to darkish green.

    5322 is one of the preserved moguls, and at some point it did carry this livery in preservation. Unfortunately, this means that high quality color photos exist of what this engine should look like and the color of the model appears to be far too light, and it should be the same as the city class or the dean goods.

    • @aberfordwest4003
      @aberfordwest4003 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Maybe this carries an earlier version of that livery?

      I know right. I was really excited for this model but ultimately I never picked it up because the livery just doesn’t match the one it’s based on. The pictures taken on the Didcot railway clearly show a darker shade of khaki, and even in the sun the loco isn’t as bright as the models colour.

    • @adamwilliams192
      @adamwilliams192 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Dapol have previously struggled with livery colours (at least in N gauge in my experience).
      That’s not to say if this is wrong or intended to portray the preserved example, but Dapol do have a history of questionable colour choices.

    • @evilbobthebob
      @evilbobthebob 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

      I agree this is probably too light, but the British Army do have a history of many, many colours under the "khaki" banner. This one, for example, could be considered Light Stone or Portland Stone.

    Pretty good deal there Sam, and a very fair review. She's very impressive. The intricate interior cab detailing of British models is really something else. Pity about the gold paint not always being applied sharply but this can be forgiven. For DCC sound there seems to be quite the disadvantage of putting the speaker on the stick in the 'boiler'..., size. For quality sound, a beefy speaker really is needed which wouldn't fit as is. The tender would be the best place (not that we are into sound though). However, overall, a well good loco for the money Sam. Especially the performance and speed controls are just far and beyond astonishing. Just wow! Cheerio,

    Hi Sam, I have one of the previous batch and it runs well. I think it is because it is a DCC factory sound version and some clever tweaks to the CVs were done at the factory. In terms of value, the DCC factory sound fitted version of the new ones (I have one on order) are even better. I paid 258 quid for mine and when you bear in mind if you fit DCC sound yourself (a decoder plus 2 speakers) it will cost you somewhat more than Dapol are charging. Worth a mention....

    Kia ora Sam, another great loco review video and for my eyes this looks more khaki than the other one. Mind you could be the blue dress debate all over again. This will be controversial, and I do enjoy your channel because we don't get Squarespace or Nord VPN adverts halfway through. But (wait for it) if you were able to get more revenue by doing those adverts in a Sam's Trains style I would still keep watching. Especially if the revenue gave you more ability to design, print and build your own models. For me these are your best videos and the improvement you've shown in such a short time is nothing less than phenomenal. Imagine having a crack at building an N Gauge model or O Gauge. Sorry to those that will hate this, just crossed my mind this morning and wonder what others think. Nga mihi nui, James

    Looks like Martin MartMartinson has a new model to make a replica of! Also, I think that its better that manufacturers dont include speakers, as they are 100% of the time worse than aftermarket ones ad need to replaced if you want great sound (which is rather uncommon I will add). Thanks as always Sam.

    Hey Sam! Great video as always, and I have an idea for the next loco you should review! Hornby did a slight upgrade on the a3 again, with the new drawbar and is scaled slightly differently and more accurate! But, I like the model! The livery is very nice, even if it is a little inaccurate! Anyway, goodbye! Edit: I forgot to mention, but it also has a 21 pin DCC decoder compared to the old one.

    Hi Sam. Delighted with your review and technical comparison with the earlier version.
    Last August, when praise for the Dapol and Accurascale Manors was at near fever pitch, I decided to pass those by and pre-order one of these instead. One of my very, very few pre-1968 memories of steam on the main line was of waiting on Gloucester (Central) platform and seeing a loco bringing my Gran from Hereford. Moguls used to haul those trains, so I went for the BR late crest 5330 which was briefly based at Gloucester in 1963/64 and might have been the very loco I remember.
    It’s a beautiful model at a great price.

    Re the electroplated dome, this is something which divides opnion as some manufactures are on record saying it’s far too shiny and toy-like / real loco fittings were never like that in real life so they won’t be doing it but rivals taking a different view and using electroplating to give a highly polished effect.

    10.05 Smokeboxes always came out of the paint shop with the same varnished gloss finish as the boilers. However in service thery would get much hotter than the boilers -- sometimes even red-hot at the lower front as firebox ash piled up -- so they quickly lost the glossy appearance as the varnish burned off.
    As regards the 'khaki,' it seems there was never any standard specification for this colour or its application. Companies mixed up whatever they could get hold of under wartime conditions -- threy bought in the ingredients, not pre-manufactured paints -- and the War Department had its own ideas on what would be appropriate in the expected theatre of operations.

    I’m waiting for the day Dapol (and Heljan, and Hornby) start including a leaflet advertising their 300 page color catalog like Bachmann does. That way, modelers can pay for more useless tat and it’ll cause Sam to have another conniption fit and tear it up. This always makes my day. 😅

      As far as I know that flyer ONLY comes with Bachmann’s North American products and anything bought from their UK ‘branchline’ or ‘Graham Farish’ range does not include such promotional material.
      As entertaining as Sam’s antics are, in reality he should take into account the fact that if you buy a North American model which has been produced for Bachmann USA / Canada it’s obvious any promotional material included won’t be relevant to a UK purchaser and stop making a fuss about it.

    Running slower is not necessarily a sign of weak magnets. Slower speed plus higher torque suggests the motors have either got more turns on them or, more likely, they improved the grade of the magnet in the motor. Stronger magnets will make the motor go slower for a given voltage, and give more torque.

    I have the oddest afinity for GWR locos in the khaki mustard/brown livery, most likely because of the City of Birmingham from the medical coach pack. @philkeller4170 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes there is. It was converted by the West Somerset Railway who decided that the limited coal and water capacity of the Small Prairie was going to significantly reduce the usefulness of the loco and noted that a significant amount of parts were shared across the two classes.
      That said there are still some significant differences between the conversion and the genuine 43XX locos so technically Sam is right to say only 2 43XX are preserved.

      According to Wikipedia: "The Railway Operating Division (ROD) was a division of the Royal Engineers formed in 1915 to operate railways in the many theatres of the First World War. It was largely composed of railway employees and operated both standard gauge and narrow gauge railways." 👍

    I was really excited for this model when it first came out, but when the first production samples were released I was devastated. The livery looks like my Bachmann (WW2) WD 2-8-0 in desert sand livery. Nothing like a WW1 Khaki, and also nothing like the engine it was based on. If you look up pictures of 5332 at Didcot Railway Centre when it was painted into this khaki it’s considerably darker, to the point that even in the sunny pictures it’s not as light coloured as this model.
    It’s an amazing model detail wise but I just can’t get over the colour, I like it, but not on this engine. It needed to be darker and shinier to match the real life 5322.
    I have a glimmer of hope they might revisit this model and actually make a correct livery but knowing model railways the chances are slim at best.
    Maybe it could be fixed with masking tape and several layers of a clear dark coat but I don’t have the skills and would definitely ruin the engine.
    Suffice to say I won’t pick this engine up, even though I collect military livery engines.

    A really nice model. So many cool features. I believe that the colour is quite accurate for a desert train. It is the same colour as Rommel's Afrika Korps. (Sand is sand in ww1 or ww2.) But would they really have painted the buffer beams bright red making it stand out for miles around and a target for roving biplanes. Hmm..
    PS - I tried to find pictures in google images but of course there were no colour photos in ww1. Lots of pictures of soldiers in pith helmets in the Palestinian and Egyptian campaigns. Cheers :-)

    Dapol made an error on the packaging. The packaging says 6300, but the loco is a 4300. This is more specifically an error because the GWR never had a 6300 class.

    • @philkeller4170
      @philkeller4170 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      But the GWR did have mogals numbered in the 63XX range…..
      Thing is because the 43XX was built in a number of batches many years apart and more importantly had incorporated some differences between some builds they were actually given several number ranges.
      4300-4399 (which is where the 43XX comes from)
      5300-5399
      6300-6399 (sometimes referred to as the 63XX class)
      7300-7321
      9300-9319 (Sometimes referred to as the 93XX class)
      Thus if the loco is from the 63XX number range then it might well be referred to as the 63XX class in some circles even though overall all the above locos were supposedly 43XX locos.

      @@philkeller4170 The GWR always numbered their classes after the first batch: hence the Castles were always the '4073 Class', - even when produced in BR days as the last batch was.
