Psychopathy (also known as sociopathy) is a truly devastating condition due to the harm and violence that people with the condition inflict upon society. Understanding psychopathy is difficult, as it overlaps significantly with antisocial personality disorder (ASPD). However, as we will see in this video, they are completely different disorders that nevertheless result in the same pattern of antisocial behavior!
Learn more psychopathy, including its core signs and symptoms, prognosis, and treatment, in this high-yield talk intended for all healthcare providers, including doctors, medical students, psychologists, nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, social workers, and more!
    ERRATA
The data on heritability at 7:15 is not accurate. The literature seems to suggest that the heritability is more like 50-65%. Apologies for this error!

mmm I am certified psychologyst with specialty in neuropsychology, and even after studying this disorder for years, I don't know enough... remember it is a 12 minute video.. what can you expect? . and you must also bear in mind.. that every psychopath has different behavior, signs and symptoms. Every human has different neural patterns and connections.

    Four core traits: BDSM
    Boldness - lack fear,
    Disinhibition-
Shallowness of emotional range- affective mimicry, perpetual boredom = lack of long term goals.
Meanness- sadism, lack empathy, empowerment through cruelty.
    Very reliable diagnostic construct.
Prevalence: 0.5% of population 10% violent prisoners. 90% heritable, appropriate nurture able to counteract.
Childhood: difficult development, traits seen early on: biting /hitting, torturing animals, bullying.
    20:1 men to women
Stability over years / decades of BDSM.
Difficult to treat with conventional methods.

I have the boldness but I also have control of my impulses. I like fighting but I don't like violence, I've abused substances but I've given all that up because I have blessings and jesus told me otherwise. The part with a dead body of family member disturbed me. It's like I used to have all these traits but they are all gone now , I want to help people and repent for my sins

With psychopathy, do symptoms show before a certain age or can they develop at age 18?

You have to show traits of conduct disorder before the age of 15 but psychopathy can only be diagnosed after 18. I always knew I'm either a sociopath or psychopath and got diagnosed with Antisocial personality disorder when I was 26, they previously misdiagnosed me with bipolar 1. My symptoms became a problem within myself around 23. I'm a sociopath not a psychopath, I do feel things, just not that much.

Where is the research indicating that 90% of the variance in psychopathic traits can be attributed to genetic factors?

    • @MemorablePsych
      @MemorablePsych  ปีที่แล้ว +6

I looked through my notes, and the sources I have quoting this 90% do not seem to have quality studies supporting them. The literature seems to suggest that the heritability is more like 50-65%. I'll include this as an errata note in the description. Thank you for pointing this out!

I’m someone living and breathing (and treating) ASPD. Many women growing up are not loners where men have a higher tendency to meet the criteria. Their upbringing during formative years, lack of social skills, and development of self-esteem tends to coddle the mental disorder.
